Why Islam?

Rate this book
Often, the first thing someone is asked when they discover the truth and embrace Islam is the question: Why Islam? Here, an American revert-to-Islam answers that question. The author, K. Sherman, writes:

The beauty of Islam is probably the best-kept secret in modern times; it is about time it was revealed. This is the sentiment of a majority of people who are discovering the truth about Islam every day.

My first exposure to the religion was through a perusal of a fifty-page booklet titled Towards Understanding Islam (written in 1932). It explained to me everything that twenty years of life and fifteen years of education could not. After the initial sense of relief, I suddenly felt cheated. I was consumed with rage. Why? I could not fathom how people could know about this phenomenal way of life and not speak out and inform others.

This book is my personal take on the beauty of Islam, backed up by relevant and authentic references. I am convinced that humanity direly needs it and it is my duty to speak out.

K. Sherman is a native of New York. She resided in the USA until her third year of college. At that time, Ms. Sherman found herself dealing with many of the issues that she has poignantly described in this book. After accepting Islam, she travelled abroad and has remained there ever since. She is now a mother of four children. She is grateful for the prospect that her children will never face the challenges she did namely, growing up without guidance. Ms, Sherman recalls her high School English teacher's advice: "You write best when you write about matters close to your heart" Therefore she has chosen to write a topic closest to her heart in her first book. The author encourages interested readers to write to her via the publisher

I gave it three stars even though I really liked it because it was simple which is the requirement for a book like this. As an individual with an Islamic background, much of this was a reminder. I enjoyed reading her thoughts as a woman with strong opinions & conviction and enjoyed how she interweaved the various aspects of Islam into a conversation type narrative while making a simple analysis of today's societies. I do appreciate these religious biography type books because it brings new life to an old picture.

Simple and concise. An easy, fruitful read that covers important elements of Islam. This book provides a brief account of Islam to new Muslims and is equally helpful to existing Muslims acting as a reminder. In addition, Sherman provides us with insights into her own experience in learning about Islam. Moreover, the final section dedicates time to discuss solutions, and perspective, to some of the probing questions one would encounter as a Muslim. A worthy read, recommended.
