About the author

[From Wikipedia] Mouloud Mammeri attended a primary school in his native village. In 1928 he emigrated to Morocco to live in his uncle's house in Rabat. Four years later he returned to Algiers and pursued his studies at Bugeaud College.
He then went to Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris intending to join the École Normale Supérieure. Conscripted in 1939 and discharged in October 1940, Mouloud Mammeri registered at the Faculté des Lettres d’Alger. Re-conscripted in 1942 after the American landing, he participated in the allied campaigns in France, Italy, and Germany.
After the end of the war, he received his degree as a professor of arts and returned to Algeria in September 1947 . He taught in Médéa, and then in Ben Aknoun, and published his first novel, The Forgotten Hill in 1952. He was forced to leave Algiers in 1957 because of the Algerian War. Mouloud came back to Algeria shortly after its independence, in 1962.
From 1965 to 1972 he taught Berber at the university in the department of ethnology. Teaching Berber was prohibited in 1962 by the Algerian government. He voluntarily taught some Berber courses under certain permission until 1973, when certain courses such as ethnology and anthropology were judged as "colonial sciences" and disbanded.
From 1969 to 1980 Mouloud Mammeri directed the Anthropological, Prehistoric and Ethnographic Research center at Algiers (CRAPE). He also headed the first national union of Algerian writers for a time, until he left due to disagreements over views of the role of writers in society.
In 1969 Mouloud Mammeri collected and published texts of the kabyle poet Si Mohand. In 1980, the prohibition of one of his conferences at Tizi Ouzou on kabyle poetry caused riots and what would be called the Berber Spring in Kabylie.
In 1982, he founded the Center of Amazigh Studies and Research (CERAM) and a periodical called Awal (The Word) in Paris, and organized several seminars on amazigh language and literature at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). Thus he was able to compile a wealth of information on the amazigh language and literature. In 1988 Mouloud Mammeri received an honorary doctorate from Sorbonne.
Mouloud Mammeri died the evening of February 26, 1989 in a car accident, which took place near Ain-Defla on his return from a symposium in Oujda (Morocco). His funeral was spectacular, with more than 200,000 people in attendance. No officials attended the funeral, where the crowd organized in demonstrating against the government.

Ce roman nous fait vivre la guerre d'Algérie du côté FLN dans un tout petit village niché dans la montagne kabyle.
Entre la lâcheté et l'héroïsme, les habitants de Tala se divisaient, certains comme le médecin Bachir Lazrak et son frère Ali sont partis aider les Moudjahids, d'autres comme Tayeb et Bélaid ont vendu leur âme. Entre ces deux extrêmes, une majorité de passifs, péteux et timorés, engagés dans une vie de souffrance.
Un très bon roman historique sur la révolution algérienne qui a été adapté au cinéma sous le même titre.

Alapvetően jó volt olvasni: tempós, bár enyhén felszínes szöveg sok akcióval, némi érzelemmel, meg emészthetően közölt emberi igazságokkal – Mammeri remarque-i erényeket csillogtatva mutatja be az algériai fellagák küzdelmét a francia gyarmatosok ellen. Főszereplője Basír, az európaizálódott orvos, aki a civilizált nyugat és nem-annyira-civilizált dél peremén egyensúlyozik, de aztán (jórészt vétlenül) beleszédül a lázadás szakadékába. A szerző sokat meríthetett a szovjet partizánregények hangulatából, no nem a Bikov-féle realista megközelítésből, hanem a tőrőlmetszett hőskultuszos fajtából: a forradalmárok itt tiszta, de kőkemény* idealisták, ellenfeleik pedig épp csak egy picivel kevésbé gonoszok, mint a nácik. Szóval tárgyilagos szövegnek nem nevezném, ám Mammeri becsületére legyen mondva: finoman megpendíti azért kétségeit is, és az is megemlítésre kerül, hogy egyes szabadságharcosok kávézókba, civilek közé hajigált bombákkal harcoltak azért a híres szabadságért. De sokat nem időz ennél a kérdésnél.

Ettől függetlenül nagyon érdekes, nagyon aktuális könyvnek tartom – éppen azért, mert vállaltan azt a bizonyos „másik oldalt” mutatja be: hogy miképp nő egy népben oly nagyra a sértettség és a frusztráció, hogy az már csak erőszakkal vezethető le. Mert ennek a frusztrációnak bizony okai vannak, mégpedig érthető, respektálható okai – és az, hogy az agresszió milyen ideológiát választ fedősztorinak (marxizmust, nacionalizmust vagy vallási fanatizmust), az csak véletlen vagy korhangulat dolga. De ettől még a civilek közé dobált bombákra nincs mentség.

* Az egyik fellaga például gránát-roncsolta karját csak úgy futás közben levágja, és behajítja a kaktuszok közé. Úgy is kell azt.

Tragiques destins algériens pendant la guerre d'indépendance : personnages assez variés, dommage que certains portraits se perdent en route, mais ça reste une belle oeuvre qui montre la lutte côté FLN et les souffrances des civils confrontés à la banalisation de la brutalité par les militaires.

je sais que ce livre raconte l'histoire de l'espoir dans des cœurs affaiblies , après de long années de vie difficile - L'écrivain est célèbre , je sais qu'il est linguiste , un chercheur très intéressé par l'origine et le développement de la langue amazigh - Notre histoire est un vrai trésor ! - Je vais relire ce livre.

Fabulous book.
I recommend this book for students and people who want to know more about Algerian society during the liberation war (1954 - 1962). It is also a picture of how colonialism can deny humanity and culture of other people.

Ce livre est très intéressant et passionnant. Da mouloud nous a fait vivre la guerre d'Algérie du côté de fln, les évènements se dérouler dans un petit village kabyle tala. Il nous a raconté comment ses gents étaient divisés une famille lazrak bechir et son p'tit frère Ali qui sont parti avec elmojahidin et leur aîné frère belaid qui était un traître un des iromyan. Il nous a permet de vivre chaque instant chaque scène cest bouleversant et émouvant, il a décrit la misère vécu soit par les habitants des villages soit par les fellaghas. Je le recommande vivement.

This book shows really well the algerian society during the war. In the same family he represented the soldiers, the traitor and the one who doesn’t really participed to the war. As an algerian, who is descendent of an moujahid this book reminds me of the story of my grandparents.It is just in some part the story was a little bit confusing for me and there is things that I don’t really understand.

Un roman bien écrit, instructif, retraçant l'histoire de personnages très réalistes aux parcours de vie parfois opposés.
Des longueurs ont eu raison de moi à plusieurs reprises, ce qui explique la note, mais ce roman vaut le détour.

mon préféré et je pense le plus abouti de la fresque algérienne. Vraiment très bon, la chronologie et les sauts de focus sont toujours un peu confus pour moi mais sinon j'ai bcp aimé
