For years I have wanted to do what I am doing now -- writing and illustrating my children's books. Electronic drawing pads and e-books have made it possible for me to create and publish my own books -- and do so in quantity. In the past, Harcourt Brace, Ten Speed Press, Thomas Nelson had only published a few.
The books were always squeezed in between art I needed to do to fill 26 Sally Huss Galleries (my degree was from USC in Fine Art); and licensing demands for clothing, greeting cards (American Greetings), purses, bibs, dinnerware, wallpaper; and the daily King Features Syndicated inspirational panel I do for newspapers called Happy Musings.
Through the years my art and writings have found their way into homes from Hollywood to The White House and perhaps even your house or your mother's.
Along with art, I have had a long history with tennis. In fact I was raised to be a champion (U.S. Junior and Wimbledon Champion, then a semi-finalist in the women's division at Wimbledonin singles and doubles). Later I became one of the top senior players in the country. This experience lead to my writing and illustrating a couple of books on the game -- EIGHT GOLDEN RULES FOR HOW TO PLAY YOUR BEST TENNIS (endorsed by Billie Jean King, Mary Carrillo, Dick Enberg, etc.) and LOVE LADIES LEAGUE TENNIS.
I mostly read the books of the French Philosopher Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov. For me, these present the clearest and most practical explanation of life and man's structure in it that I've come across. These light-filled pages send my heart soaring and give me food for my present work.
Presently I write, illustrate and paint in my Solana Beach, California studio where I live with my husband Marv. I also still play a bit of tennis and walk the beach daily.
Children's Books: WHO NEEDS TEETH? (Adorable Rhyming bedtime Story/Picture Book About Caring for Your Teeth, for Beginner Readers, Ages 2-8) Colorful children's rhyming book about a girl who sees different animals and knows they need teeth or they'd not be able to eat their favorite foods. She then selects her favorite foods and knows she'd not be able to eat them if she had no teeth. Good book for promoting a child to take care of their own teeth. Other works by the author are excerpted at the end.
I really enjoyed the characters and the vivid colors of them! The story is fun and very simple to understand! The kids will enjoyed this book as much I did. I will read more books of this creative author ! I am an adult and I enjoy reading children's book and everything related to it!
I enjoyed this book and found it to be developmentally appropriate for preschool and kindergarten. It does a good job of explaining why it is important to take care of your teeth. Cute illustrations and rhyming words make the story more entertaining. It would be appropriate to follow the book with a visit from a dentist or dental hygienist.
I have read many of the Sally Huss books for young children; this is one of her best. Most children are not particularly mindful about taking care of their teeth. This book makes it so easy for them to understand their importance and the necessity of care. In adorable rhymes, Huss explains why some common favorite animals of children need teeth to live. Then she moves on to the child to make things personal. Without teeth, we couldn't eat many of our favorite foods like peanut butter and jelly, birthday cake or cookies. At the end of the book Huss shows the importance of teeth in smiling and making friends. I love her analogy of a smile being like a postcard that lets others know how you feel. For all these reasons, we need to take care of our teeth.
Bright illustrations and perky rhymes with a multicultural emphasis help the young child get the message clearly. Parents, dentists, librarians and teachers of young children need to include this book in their collections.
I enjoyed this sweet factual and yet funny in some ways on know why and how to care of them. With beautiful illustrations! I would recommend for this for kids young or old. That they may learn young and be motivated to brushing their teeth their whole like. And the big why's hey need to keep this routine all their days. For this reason I feel that it needs five stars. I received the book for free and given it an honest review. Great work Sally! By Angela
A decent book because it has a moral/purpose to it alot of children's books dont...it teaches them about hygiene, which I think some kids may be still lacking and its a good idea to instill at young age to brush your teeth daily. The illustrations are engaging and funny, possibly provoking the readers to follow the advice. While in itself the text is somewhat boring and does not necessarily rhyme I think this book is still great due to the powerful message it gives off...
A delightfully illustrated story about how we use teeth – what could we do without them? Also explaining how a lot of common animals couldn’t live without them --- teaches children about caring for their teeth so that they can become strrng, healthy and happy. Happy smiles need teeth and make other people happy!
