Loved this series, and sad to see it end. Unlike Black Bird: Volumes 1-18, which I invested so much time and emotion into reading, *Hapi Mari* was not a disappointment. I just want to make a note here that a man should not make light of a woman's feelings or force himself onto her, no matter how much he knows that she loves him. If you're making love, and she says *No* or tells you to stop, continuing on (even if just because he wants it) is rape. And, that is not sexy, nor does it turn the reader on. It's obvious that the mangaka probably did not want it to come across that way, but keep in mind that this is aimed at the 18-25, and some people will take it that way. Otherwise, this is a nice ending to the series.
---------------------
Hokuto has gotten all his problems worked out now, and has pretty much distanced himself from the Mamiya family. He has chosen to go back to using his mother's surname, Miura....a name which he is fully intent upon giving to Chiwa....as they are marrying again. And, this time, their happy marriage will be forever.
--------------------
I just really wish we had found out whether or not Chiwa actually is pregnant. Hokuto and Chiwa having a child would have been a nice ending to the series, too.

...yeah, no. I'm pissed. That ending wasn't very satisfying. I tried my best to hype myself up after last volume's improvement…. But this was just sort of... meh. Like I had a rather fraught relationship with Midnight Secretary, Vol. 01 but it ended strongly enough that I didn't feel like I'd wasted my time. In the end, I did really enjoy this series and would probably average the entire thing at around three stars, but man. Other than the wedding scene in the last chapter, this volume delivered very little. I mean, the was cute but nowhere near enough to make me happy with the conclusion, in general. I still love Chiwa and think this was a worthwhile comfort read but I mean... there's a reason it took me so long to remember I was reading it in the first place. Oh, well.

Yayyy! Happy couple in the house!

Yay!

4.5 for the whole series. The series was a lot of fun and the character growth was well done. It did get a tad repetitive in places but the characters made up for that.

Eh, this series as a whole was a 5/10 for me. Occasionally, there are cute moments but not worth all the volumes. I read this some time ago in 2018. Maybe early 2018? Idk.

If I didn't like completing things so much, I probably would have dropped it earlier. The male lead had no problem slapping around the female lead. I think every now and then there was a cute moment like when Chiwa and Hokuto hugged her because he was so scared for her (if I'm remembering right and not overlapping this with another josei). But I didn't like this couple and didn't care about the sexy scenes.

So yeah, only read this if you like those sadistic, violent males (no thanks. I like my tsunderes with a side of sweetness) and their ditsy female counterparts.

This is a far as I get in this series so this rating is 4 the whole series.
one of my favorites so far!
everything started like an arrange marriage, when they were only going to pretend, and then step by step they get to know each other, to trust each other, relying on each other; and... attraction starts, even though it was only by jealous at the start and then.... ohhhh! they just can't stand to be away from each other. And Chiba helping him with his purpose in life, making him change, helping him to be a better man!!!
ohhh that was so good!
And yeah!! holy moly! hot scenes!

I think the art is pretty but other than that this series didn’t have enough cute moments to make up for all the miscommunication. The toxicity was not fun and I feel like there was dubcon in this volume. The ending was just them arguing…. I wish it could have been really sweet and romantic and them both being very confident in their relationship. I guess at least no one went over seas while the other found themselves to finally be certain about a relationship.

2020 Read #22

I’m a sap, so this finale tugged at my heartstrings a little. The series isn’t the best, but it has its good moments and its bad ones. Overall, I liked following the journey of these two idiots who love each other without reservation. Again, it’s not the best, but if you can handle josei manga that have some problematic elements, then maybe give this one a try.

Happy Marriage 10 brings the series to a conclusion on a high note. The resolve comes in the first three chapters and then there is an extra story at the end of the couple coping afterwards with their new life. Author Enjoji smartly avoids a "criminal confessing at the end and being sent to jail" for a more realistic conclusion; though I could have done without Clue-like ending all the same. But the story retains its sweetheart marshmallow center that made it such an engaging series.

Story: When the truth is finally revealed, that Hokuto is not blood related to the Mamiya family, he believes Chiwa will be safe. But the realization hits him who the culprit is who killed his mother and attempted to kill Chiwa. The only way to protect Chiwa is to divorce her and take her out of the line of succession for Mamiya. Chiwa lives with the heartache of being alone only so long before she decides to side with Hokuto's grandfather and bring a resolution to Hokuto once and for all.

This is the big wedding volume and it is very sweet. The story really is about the two arguing but that those disagreements are the heart of their relationship and strengthens it. Even at the wedding, Chiwa is arguing and Hokuto is taking command of the situation and they will find a place to meet in the middle.

Most of the volume is about solving the mystery of Hokuto's mother's murder. Although we do have a confessional, it's not a silly "aha! I caught you!" moment, which is nice. The guilty party seems genuinely aggrieved that Hokuto was made CEO-apparent.

In all, this wraps up nicely for a wonderful conclusion. Reviewed from an ARC.

Copypasted review from #9, because of reasons.

This series was recommended to me by someone on MangaUpdates, I think, when I asked for "classic" Josei. I read the first few volumes in July 2012, though I still have to add them to my Goodreads shelves, but the only reason I finished the series was because it annoyed me to have "dropped" it when I was almost through.

I'll copypaste the following part to all my reviews of this manga, because my main point of critic remains the same: It's annoyingly sexist, to the point where the male MC tells the heroine to shut up or else he rapes her. It was said jokingly, while they were both lying in bed, but seriously, while there are most certainly a lot of words to express what I think of it, I decide to just keep it at.. "It's sexist", because I'm too lazy to turn this one into a rant.

My standard for romantic manga is surprisingly low. It's not like I expect women and men to be in any form equals anymore, but there's a line you really shouldn't cross. I don't care if your male character is the #1 sexual harrasser, the point is, don't trivialize it. If he says shit like it, at least have the heroine be genuinely offended and have an open discussion, instead of scandalized in the typical "blush blush oh he said something related to sex blush"-way that is so common in many manga these days, I just want to slap people.

Otherwise not bad, in how there are several real conflicts and a relationship that doesn't just magically work because the mangaka wants it to. (As flawed as their working their issues out might be.)

No rating.

Şimdi aslında kapanış 4 puanlıktı çünkü mangakacım sağolsun bazı şeylere sinir olduğum için bir puanı kırmak istedim ama mangaya haksızlık olmasın dedim. :D

Kızdığım noktalara gelirsek;

Review for complete series

Chiwa's father has been nothing but trouble and a financial mess for her to clean up. Even working extra nightshifts don't seem to round up the money but an unusual offer might get her out of this mess: her company's CEO Hokuto can only keep his position in the family business if he were to marry. Hokuto is in need of a wife, Chiwa needs the money. A quickly signed marriage certificate turns them into unlikely flatmates - it's not as though they are romantically involved.

For the longest time, I only read shoujo manga and disregarded any series that were targeted at older readers. I'd often seen Happy Marriage?! during the time when I was working at a comic store and mentally shelved it as not interested - office romance, married couple - none of it caught my interest. It was only during a moment of extreme boredom that I picked the first volume off the shelf and flipped through it. I came to the conclusion that it was one of the most hilarious manga romances I had read and immediately ordered the entire series and promoted Maki Enjouji to an auto-buy author.

About a decade later, I still love this series. Chiwa and Hokuto's relationship is absolutely hilarious, they have me laughing so many times. But in addition to the comedy, I love the chemistry between them and the bond that grows between them as the series progresses. I think this is most strongly seen in Hokuto who transforms from a calculating businessman into a caring husband. I also consider both Chiwa and Hokuto to be very realistic characters as they both definitely have their faults. Funnily, this seems to be one of the most common points of criticism this series seems to receive from other many other readers.

It seems others consider Chiwa a weak female lead and Hokuto as abusive and arrogant. Arrogance aside, I can't agree on either of the other points. Both of them have an argumentive nature - they argue, in fact, they argue a lot. I don't believe either of them is worse than the other in this point and, as both of them rightly say, it's part of their relationship dynamics - they grow stronger after each argument. The difference is the way they express themselves; Chiwa is less confident and cries easily, but she rarely backs down and stands her ground - crying in itself is not a weakness of character, the fact that she can still pull through shows that. Hokuto is very reserved when it comes to showing warm feelings but he is very outspoken when he's upset which in my mind is very realistic. Not everyone is able to express how they really feel and I think it's why these two are often irritated yet also bring out the good in each other.

While domestic abuse certainly is an issue that needs to be addressed more often, I do feel that many people overshoot their target by narrowing down on books or movies that show even the slightest hint of a male character not playing the perfect gentleman. Hokuto is by no means perfect but there isn't a single action of his in this entire series that I would consider as abusive. There is a scene where he slaps Chiwa - a slap is a far cry from hitting or abuse. There is a reason why it's called a wake-up slap - there are times when something like that might really be the only way to get through to someone who is, as in this particular case with Chiwa, in a complete panic and not listening to reason. Had it been the other way around with Chiwa slapping Hokuto, no one would have said a thing. People aren't always rational and the way many fictional characters are criticized in this regard sets unrealistic standards of real people.

With that off my chest, other than the comedy and romance, there's also a bit of a mystery and family issues on both sides to deal with. I don't usually like longer romance series (although Happy Marriage?! isn't all that long with 10 volumes) as they tend to drag but here there are plenty of other elements that keep the story going. Despite the introduction of other love interests along the way, I like how neither Chiwa nor Hokuto ever showed the slightest interest in others.

Finally, I really enjoyed the art in this one. I generally like Maki Enjouji's art but I am particularly fond of it in this series. Her art is also a strong drive for the comedy but the romantic scenes are also beautifully drawn. While I may still prefer shoujo manga (I don't seem to outgrow it...), thanks to Happy Marriage?!, I know that there certainly are manga for older readers that can appeal to me as it's been one of my favourites since I first read it.

The divorce was unnecessary and silly, considering how we don't really see how the mystery was resolved, we just get the after.
