What a disappointment...I was swimming in anticipation to get to Neil and Gwen's story. I love Gwen and Neil as characters and this book was an affirmation of that...but most of the book was spent developing and executing the thriller plot and very little time was focused on Gwen and Neil's romance. If I wanted to read a military coup and conspiracy book I would not have picked up a romance novel.

Review
This was a great work of romantic suspense It reminded me a bit of Karen Robards and Lisa Marie Rice and that is very good thing.
Gwen, our heroine, is smart and real and realistic. She is never too stupid to live. I just love that. She is a sheltered woman who is coming into herself. She is bright and pursing her crush on Neil, the ex special forces bodyguard and security expert, in a fun and full grown woman way.
Neil has PTSD and is reluctant to reengage with the world fully. He is also taciturn and uber hot. Grrrr. Then, we throw them both into the mayhem that comes with a romantic suspense plot. Boom-- our couple is on the run to together. I love on the run and stuck together plots. We get good couple time. Love fun ensues with emotional realism and enough mystery that makes this book a keeper.
The plot is fast paced and the romance believable and endearing. I like both the hero and heroine very much and loved spending time with them. There are unique touches in this story that make the book shine while enjoying the conventions of the character types (proper lady and wounded warrior) and the genre. Very good! I shall now be looking for the rest of the series!
I was given this book for my honest review so there you have it!
This is third in a series and previous characters and relationships are important. Indeed, Gwen and Neil start in previous books, so you probably want to read in order.
I've been looking forward to Gwen and Neil. Neil is my favorite kind of competent strong guy and Gwen was so cute with her low-grade obsession over him. So I was disappointed to find Neil with an I'm-not-worthy negative motivation* and manufactured circumstances to maximize misunderstandings. I'm already resistant to the whole suspense turn Bybee has taken with her romances, lately, and that trend intensifies in this story.
And the suspense just felt so cliché once it started showing up. I mean, I'm always going to react poorly to psychopath villain PoV sections so I can't judge how effecting/interesting it is on that axis. All I know is that it seemed kind of stupid and the bad guy was doing magic to get past Neil's supposed competence. I mean, is he the top of his field or not? If he is, then why is this nutjob dancing around him thumbing his nose? And why, please why, is Gwen being blasé about dead ravens showing up at her door? One is suspicious. Two in as many days? Srsly?
So I broke on this one. I liked the protagonists in previous books and now both are being made dumber for plot reasons and I find that off-putting.
* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.
I admit it. I can be an author stalker. I recently ran across author Catherine Bybee and read her "Wife by Wednesday (Weekday Brides Series)" story (I think it was offered by my library & I grabbed it). I GOT **SUCKED IN**. I immediately looked to see if there were more "Weekday Bride Series" books. Then I read "Married by Monday (Weekday Brides Series)". Again. SUCKED IN. So can you just IMAGINE my scary excited-ness when I realized I had the possibility to read "Fiance by Friday (Weekday Brides Series)" in exchange for an HONEST review?
In "Fiance by Friday" we get the story of Lady Gwen & Bodyguard Neil. Their story been a long time coming... and it doesn't disappoint. Yet again, Catherine Bybee couches a love story with suspenseful intrigue, family drama and some hot interactions. I won't give up any spoilers, especially since it's not publishing until August 2013, but I will tell you what I really like about it!
We get to "hear" from both Blake & Carter (a bit from the wives, but more of the action is from the men). We get an honest and heartfelt perspective on "survivor guilt" and life as a former Spec Ops military man. The joy of knowing there are still days left that haven't been covered -- and I have an inkling that Rick might be next??? (What I read was an Advanced Review Copy, so there was no preview -- this is just my idea/hope.) It's long, well-written, and WELL worth any money paid for it! The story is captivating; very suspenseful with many twists & turns (again - no spoilers here!)
Things I didn't really like about it?
I realized that it is called the "Week DAY Bride Series". Since Wednesday, Monday & now Friday are covered, that only leaves 2 left. Darn it!
While I know I was fortunate to read this ahead of release... I just can't wait until the next one comes out!!!!
With a bride on the cover and a title of "Fiance by Friday," I fully expected a sweet, sappy romance. And while that was there, I was not expecting the thrill ride of action and adventure in a novel I thought was a romance. But that didn't stop me from being fully engaged in the story. I really enjoyed the book. I thought that Neil was a great guy, if a little over-protective. The run-for-their lives flight that he and Gwen took, where they finally admitted their feelings, had me rooting that the circumstances would turn out ok. Fans of secular romance will enjoy this book. Also recommended to fans of adventure.
This one was just long, drawn out and boring. Added to that I never really understand the reasons for holding back when the h and H both want each other, the reasons always just seem week. Felt it for the H and his bad dreams of his past. Little things Gwen said and I found myself not a fan of hers. The suspense was a bigger part of this plot. Meh! Moving on!
Omg it was such a pleasure to get to read this book before it comes out. It has to be Catherine's finest work so far and that's saying a lot being as I love all her others so very much. It took me on the best ride any book has taken me on and had me going though every emotion know to man kind. I will happily read Fiancé by Friday over and over again. And I can't wait for the next book Catherine has coming. Keep up the great work Catherine.
This book is part of a series. I have read four others in this series.
Each story has some connection to Alliance, a company which finds matches for various rich and/or famous individuals who are in need of a spouse...usually for only a short term. It might be a politician who wants to present himself as a family man or an actor who wants to reassure his female admirers that he really is a Ladies' Man despite his homosexual leanings.
In this story Lady Gwendolyn Harrison has taken over her sister's-in-law previous position with the company as Samantha/Sam now has a family and a titled husband who keep her busy. We read of Gwen's roommate, Karen, who becomes one of the matches...only for a year and with a big pay-off in the end, which will help Karen's charity project. We also read of the security measures taken to protect all the clients and their background information which Alliance has had to dig up to insure the press doesn't get wind of the why and where for of each match.
As the story description tells us Gwen's personal security, Neil, not only is one well built and attractive man but is also very attentive to all the details of modern technology used and needed to keep Gwen and Karen safe. When glitches and bugs appear in their home's security system and when new neighbors turn up dead in the hot tub in which they were skinny dippy, clues begin to be uncovered that this is not just random accident malfunctions in the electrical wiring or the installation.
This book had a lot, a lot of angst. There is a bit of MA material but it was minimal. Neil's military experiences have come back to haunt him and other Marine buddies in a deadly way. Written up as accidental, several events don't add up to such for Neil and he begins to think that the villain is attacking through loved ones...sweethearts and wives. Is he crazy? Dead black ravens mean nothing but YUCK! Ewww! to Karen and Gwen but when Neil finally learns about those, things begin to click.
This is a story which quickly draws you in and keeps you turning pages. I enjoyed it.
Fiancé by Friday is Gwen’s story, the privileged but sheltered daughter of an English duke. Gwen has always aspired to leave her blood blue relatives and start living her own life. She moves into her sister in law’s former residence in the states and starts running her ‘bride for hire’ business. Now if only she could get her favorite bodyguard to show some interest in her. Former military man, Neil has always enjoyed keeping his client Gwen in eye’s sight but that is all it could ever be. When security problems at Gwen’s home start to point to something more serious, Neil is forced to take matters into his own hands. He also has to come to grips with his past and his feelings for Gwen. Fleeing the state in a car with the man she’s always fantasized about, seems like a dream come true for Gwen. Unfortunately as time passes, she and her family start to wonder if the threat is real or just in Neil’s head. I could not put this book down. It has suspense, adventure, humor, and a great love story. My favorite one of this series so far!!
All of the books in this series are just guilty pleasures. Very light , chicklet, vacation read. I liked the story. The suspense in this book was killing me, which was great, giving the story some substance. Not much of a fan of Neil and Gwen. It felt like their love in this story had no depth. I didn't feel it which is a shame because I loved Neil in the previous book. But in this one I just didn't feel their chemistry, probably because most of the story is spent on building up the mystery and there's not much time for the romance. The book is actually more of a suspense than a romance. Did not feel I got to know Neil at all and his time with Gwen was pretty limited to security related issues. Would have loved hearing more from Neil's point of view. More insight.
I love Gwen and I love Neil. They are seriously the cutest. I like that we also go a few scenes from the other couples and a few times they threw in stuff about things that happened on previous books but at the same time this can be read basically entirely alone. I love when books do that. I also thought this one had quite a bit more action and suspense and mystery to it rather than just romance. I also like that get got to get a more in depth background of Neil it kinda explains why he does what he does. This was a great book and I really enjoyed it.
Gwen Harrison has been trying to get her brother's bodyguard, Neil MacBain, to notice her since she moved to America over a year ago. Neil is in charge of security at Gwen's home. He is polite but distant, and he would never mix business with pleasure. Then strange things start happening. A door in Gwen's house was found open, but the alarm didn't sound. A dead bird was found inside the house. The new neighbors were found dead. Neil knows this is a message from his past. Someone wants him dead and they will use Gwen to get to him.
The third book in the Weekday Brides series is a winner. Just like the last book, it's a contemporary romance with a touch of suspense. Gwen and Neil had good chemistry, and I liked that Gwen was a rich girl out of her element when she and Neil were on the run from the bad guys. I also liked trying to figure out who was behind the threats. The side story with Gwen's roommate, Karen, and her marriage of convenience should be the next book in the series. I can't wait to read it. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
Bored to frigging tears. Neil is a douche and has stalker-ish tendencies. Gwen is too demure and nice. Plot was ok. Villain's POV is not my cuppa. Tapping out and moving on.
3.5 stars. This book is like two stories in one. First, the hero and heroine (Gwen and Neil) and then there's a bit of an intro story for the next book in the series with Karen and Michael.
Gwen and Neil are the main couple, Gwen has someone after her because Neil cares about her, and that person is trying to hurt Neil. There's a stronger aspect of romantic suspense to this story than the previous ones in the series, which I liked. I didn't really love Neil as a hero at the beginning - he did a lot of pushing away because he didn't think he was good enough for the heroine. I haaaaate that reasoning in any book... it's SO overused. However, the hero did grow on me as the book progressed. I know that this couple and Neil's company are used in other series by this author and now I'm tempted to do some re-reads.
Meanwhile, Karen and Michael enter into a marriage of convenience. Karen's love story continues in the next book, but it's not with Michael, but rather his brother. 😱😱😱 Michael is gay and his struggle with hiding it from the world for the sake of his career continues on through at least book 6 of this series.
I liked how the two stories worked together, and it really gave a good set up for the next book of the series.
Safe; no virgins, they have known each other for some time (but how much time isn't clear) since he was her brother's bodyguard. I believe they were both with others while knowing each other, but the heroine does mention being celibate for a while prior to being with Neil. Not many details are given about the past. No scenes with OM/OW, no OM/OW drama, no cheating.

What started as a simple 'find me a ''pretend'' wife, turned out to be a great suspense !
Who'd a thought Gwen and Neil. She was running the dating agency for her sister-in-law Samantha, and had just met an actor who was looking for a temporary wife, and Gwen straight away thought of Karen, who was working with her at the agency.
Neil was the bodyguard and head of her brother Blake's security and was watching over Gwen and Karen at the house/office they shared, then strange things began to happen, taps were found on the phones leaving the security breached.
This had Neil on high alert, but they all thought it was something to do with Karen marrying the actor, what with dead birds turning up.
Neil was contracted by one of his old marine colleagues, to tell him about what else had been happening. Then things really started to get out of hand, with clandestine escapes, Neil took Gwen with him to keep her safe, which unfortunately was the wrong thing to do!
It did mean that the she got the guy, had been lusting after Neil for a while!
I loved the suspense of Neil being hunted down, whilst his ballsy girl, was 'safe' also cross with Blake because initially they thought he had flipped with a bad case of PTSD, but also relieved that her brother and friends were rallying around after them, especially when the truth came out.
It so could have ended differently, I am so pleased we got the ending you gave us, as my stomach was in knots. This book had me laughing, crying, shouting at the kindle, and smiling on a train like a mad woman!!!!!
I honestly cannot think of even one thing I enjoyed about this book. I really enjoyed the author’s Not Quite Series. But ever since then, her books have an annoying habit of introducing weird, poorly developed suspense subplots that add nothing to the story and only serve to make me bored and annoyed. And this was my least favorite so far. Poor narration didn’t help. The fact that I finished this shows how truly stubborn I can be sometimes. I wanted to keep going partly because I have a KU subscription until this weekend, and I wanted to see if the next was better (spoiler alert: it’s not) and if I’d continue with the series. I’m gonna be happy to stop after book 4.
Gwendolyn Harrison sudah menyukai Neil MacBain sejak dulu, tapi Neil hanya menganggap Gwen sbg adik dari teman baiknya, Blake, Duke of Albany. Jadi saat Gwen dan Karen mendapati tempat mereka tinggal disuguhi mayat burung gagak dua kali, Neil tahu ini bukan sekedar lelucon.
Neil akhirnya melarikan Gwen. Dlm perjalanan mereka melewati hutan antah berantah mereka mendapati ketertarikan satu sama lain. Gak butuh waktu lama mereka bercinta bahkan menikah. Tapi Neil dgn naif menitipkan Gwen pd musang berbulu domba.
Neil tahu dirinyalah sebenarnya target si pembunuh atas dosa-dosa masa silamnya.

I don't know what it is with this series but I love them. They have the perfect combination of suspense, mystery, passion, family, loyalty, and love.
It has felt like forever that we have been waiting for Gwen and Neil to FINALLY get together. The first two books were like the longest foreplay between the two.
For Neil the giant with a jaded past and a soft heart
For Gwen, the lady with a heart of gold and strength of a warrior
Neil tried to deny his feeling for as long as he could not wanting to bring him down but even though it was obvious that those two had a connection well expect for Blake. Even the bad guy saw it which caused Gwen to be the target for a way to get to Neil.
With Neil being dealt this hand he is forced to shit or get off the pot. Well since it was a full book with a HEA we all know what he chose.
The development and ease of Neil and Gwen was great to see. With this relationship you got to see Neil open up and to finally see light in his otherwise dark world.
Loved the interaction of all the past characters and hopefully some new ones. This series just always seems to put a smile on my face when I read them.
