Okay, so here's the deal. Ward is a gifted writer, and I love her concept with this series. However, I made the mistake of reading the first two books only to find out that the fourth book is only 67 pages long but costs the same amount of money. I'm sorry, but three dollars is too much for 67 pages; at least, it is in my book. Nevertheless, I will leave a review.
This was a relatively good book, but I had read Ward's DAMAGED novel before reading this one, and the writing was more developed in that one. But, this wasn't a real issue for me.
I will say, it took me longer to get into the story than I would have expected, mostly because of the first few chapters. While the whole novel is told with a split first-person POV, a bunch of the chapters are retellings. That is to say, one chapter is given in Mari's point of view; then, the next chapter is the same scene from Trystan's point of view. The split first-person POV is not my favorite, but I found it surprisingly effective in this case. Also, I'm not a fan of the "retelling" style; however, because it was done scene by scene--as opposed to book by book--I didn't mind it so much. It just took some time to get used to.
Also, I ended up laughing at myself at one point. It took me until Chapter 10 to realize this was set in high school. I had assumed it was college, which made for some confusing points in the first few chapters. I thought my assumption was funny.
I really did like this story and would definitely recommend it, especially to younger readers who aren't ready for the full on adult-contemporary novel.
