A dark romantic manga. Includes zombies and a good art style. There is a good plot and the concept is also very good.

Ending the first arc. The story could just go happy ending with a bit open plots in the back (like the seemingly real evil mother). Not exactly climatic, but… just think a one season anime, or half-season.

But the author decided to expand the plot further to the next volume, adding probably (judging from the preview ads) another zombie girl.

Triangle love hints is also very unwelcomed. Better if it’s straightforward Chihiro × Rea and nothing else.

Beh, dai. Continua ad essere particolare.

Anche i disegni non sono male. Certo, mi viene il dubbio che l'autore non abbia mai visto un seno dal vivo, visto come li disegna. Robe che sfidano la forza di gravità... Ma anche gli asciugamani stanno su per miracolo... C'è una scena in cui Ranko ha l'asciugamano che le copre a malapena il davanzale e sta su senza problemi. Particolare anche la capigliatura di Furuya.

Toh, sembra che il padre sia un po' rinsavito.

Vediamo come sarà il prossimo avversario, anche se spero che il prossimo arco narrativo sia un po' più sviluppato di questo del padre.

And in two volumes we've pretty much covered the extent of the original anime series, barring weird timeline shifts and things. I'mm a bit surprised that the manga moves so quickly when the anime moved so slowly.

Anyway, this volume covers more zombie shenanigans and some more stuff with Rea's creepy father. Probably would have been more shocking how things turned out had I not already known what would happen.

I decided to read Sankarea: Undying Love Story & Art By Mitsuru Hattori Vol.2 because I've read Vol.1 and loved it then I wanted to read one of my favorite Zombie books again/read more of this series. Once I started reading I fell in love again with this unusual zombie romance! This story follows a guy named Furuya Chihiro who is a High School student and is obsessed with Zombies to the point he wants one for his girlfriend! After his pet cat named Bub died he decided to use a resurrection potion to bring his cat back to life as a zombie. Then He meets a girl named Sanka Rea who is a popular girl and local heiress whose life isn't as perfect as it seems? Furuya Chihiro suggests that she could serve as a test subject! My favorite characters so far are Furuya Chihiro because he very unique, has a love for horror zombie themed stuff, and he's a very good friend to Sanka Rea because he is taking care of her once she became a zombie & letting her live her life. Sanka Rea because she's a girl who wants to be free from her family and experience life. She's now a Zombie who is finally experiencing life with the help of Chihiro by her side! Saohji Ranko because she's Furuya Chihiro cousin who is like an older sister and bestfriend to him, she also like Zombie Horror movies too. Also know about Rea's zombie secret! My favorite parts of the story are when Rea when full zombie mode and tried to attacked Ranko while she was looking for a new zombie movie borrow from Chihiro but Rea just ended up ripping her shirt into shreds. Then once Chihiro came into his room Rea kissed him in zombie mode but also bit his lip! Now Ranko know the truth about Rea becoming a zombie because Chihiro explained everything to her. Another part I really like is when Furuya Chihiro's Grandpa explains why the Hydrangeas plant is important to keeping the decomposing prosses from happening quickly to zombies but the zombies must consume it to slow the prosses but if not eaten they'll start rotting. Also a part I really love is when Rea turns back to normal mode and Chihiro takes her to the mall for the first time kind of like a date for both of them, this whole part is so cute! An awesome part I really enjoyed was when Chihiro gets kidnaped by Rea's disgusting father, Danichiroh from the mall to his house to get rid of him by having a sword fight and keeping Rea all to himself but Rea comes to the recuse to finally speak up to her father to save Chihiro. I really love how strange this story is because it's very different from common Zombie stories! I'm happy that Rea finally stood up to her father and become a free women with Chihiro helping her with being a zombie. The art work is very detailed with each scene/place, characters, the gruesome gory scenes and I love it! I can't wait to read Sankarea: Undying Love By Mitsuru Hattori Vol.4 because it left off with a cliffhanger with a new character that knows something about zombies and knows Furuya Chihiro somehow! Also I want to know more what is going happen to Sanka Rea as zombie, how is Chihiro and Rea's relationship will bloom and if anyone will find out that she's a zombie! I would recommend this book to horror fans and zombie lovers.

Summary (for the whole manga):
Furuya Chihiro is a die-hard fan of zombies. He has a whole collection of zombie movie DVDs, zombie dolls/figurines, and other zombie-related stuff. With his grandfather's old book, he secretly tries to craft a resurrection drug that is said to be able to bring back the dead in the form of a zombie. Chihiro's beloved cat, Babu, has recently died; and therefore he wants to test the drug on Babu. In the event of his experiment that was done in an abandoned building, Sanka Rea, an heiress of the Sanka family, unexpectedly comes to the well near the building to vent out her frustration towards her father. Both of them surprisingly got along with each other afterwards, and Rea shows interest in Chihiro's zombie experiment. Rea secretly steals some of the resurrection drug from Chihiro and drinks the drug with the hopes of ending her life. However, nothing happens after she consumed the drug. The next night, Rea falls over a cliff when she was with her father. Surprisingly, Rea did not exactly die, due to the drug that she consumed. Rea becomes a zombie and is free from her father's grasp. She decides to live with Chihiro's family. Chihiro then does his best to keep Rea from rotting away and to learn the real truth about zombies and the resurrection drug.

Chihiro adapts taking care of Rea in her new state. She ends up living in secret in his room until she is discovered by his cousin, Wanko. This results in his grandfather warnings him of certain things and the family decides to keep Rea is their household.

We also learn that hydrangeas, which were used in the zombie making potion are the only nourishment for the undead. It also changes their state of mind. Which Chirico is still documenting in order to learn what makes Rea tick.

In a failed attempted to kidnap Rea, her father's associates take Chihiro instead. While she goes in to rescue him, Chihiro and her father duel for Rea. After being impaled in the stomach, we learn when Rea kissed Chihiro, she bit him and this resulting in him becoming a living zombie for an X amount of time.

Her father accepts defeat and both men agree that help Rea live a normal life, or as close as it can be.

1.5 rounded down as the neat story beats and zombie elements can't bat past the terrible ending and extreme sexualization that hurts the narrative and is extremely disgusting.
The fumbling to deal with Rea's rigor mortis and Furuya's kidnapping are neat ideas. But I wish it was way less horny. It's got neat story ideas but Hattori vascillates between plot and randomly inserting boob and butt shots. And the chapter covers are sooo sleazy and creepy.
Add to that the terrible ending. The Dad sucks and is extremely groomer-coded (the anime only episode makes him only worse) and yet they act like getting his blessing is the good ending? Like, Sanka wants to be free from her Dad's control and Furuya makes a point to say he'll try his best. It could've ended with them escaping and fucking over the Dad. But instead Furuya asks the Dad to help if they need it? You mean the guy who bathed in photos of his naked daughter that he took? And kidnapped you? And then they get his blessing. And both Rea and Furuya are like “Well we sure did achieve him accepting us.” They shouldn't want his acceptance! He fucking kidnapped him, and is controllingly abusive to his daughter.
And then Ranko and Rea formally meet and the whole time Hattori is sexualy framing Ranko. Its so gross. And he's setting a stupid love triangle ughhh. Sorry this is not it.

Esse volume começa muito bem com alguns quadros bem creepy da Rea meio fora de si. Esses pequenos elementos explorando o lado terror do gênero de zumbis são ótimos para equilibrar com o tom mais de comédia da obra.
O pai da Rea é um personagem simplesmente nojento e pervertido. Não gosto nem um pouco dele. Mas tem uma coisa do ambiente doméstico bizarro da família Sanka que eu amo de paixão: as empregadas. Essas mulheres trabalham a anos para um casal super esquisito da alta sociedade e isso é bem aparente. Essas personagens são carismáticas, esquisitas e hilárias na medida certa.
A bizarrice é algo bem aparente em todos os personagens desse mangá. Uma bizarrice que serve como forma de manter o leitor intrigado é a senilidade do avô do protagonista e seus episódios de lucidez. Também é legal ver ele como um velhinho bizarro que às vezes age como criança. Eu acabo rindo bastante dele.

Love hurts...unless you're dead.

With Rea's recent zombification, Chihiro is desperately trying to understand her condition and find a way to help her as rigor mortis settles in. Although this series can be a bit ecchi at times the characters continue to amuse as they all adjust to their new situations. Rea's father's obsession turns even darker as he takes drastic actions, Chihiro discovers Rea has a special diet but still worries for the future, and Wanko has to take more initiative or her feelings might be buried in the ground. Necrophilia has never been this cute.

Fascinating concept! I love how the characters in this series just accept that he loves zombies and he may try to make one. They’re all so accepting and it’s refreshing. Is it creepy? Yes. But it’s kept my interest and I’d like to see what happens next.

Rea has run away from her father and the Sanka family, and began living with Furuya's family as a normal girl (but really, she's a zombie). Once the family finds out she is living in his room with him though, the fact that she is a zombie is kept secret from all but Ranko. But it appears that Ranko is in love with Furuya, and on top of that, Ranko is human, whereas Rea has already gone into rigor mortis and may begin to rot away any day...


Meh. I would have given it almost, just about, 4 stars back when I first read this. Ah, also, I think I started reading this sometime when I had JUST turned fifteen, or were about to, so I probably read it in October or November of 2012. Anyway, this didn't really stray too far from the anime from what I can remember. And I remember reading it fairly well quite a long while back and it isn't as entertaining now as then. I kind of want to buy the original Japanese editions of the Sankarea manga though. They seem like they would be more interesting.
Umm, uhh, well, about the actual story in this one... I guess... back then... I thought it was really cool and exciting. *Scratches the back of my head, nervously.* ^^; *Can't remember shit anymore.*
Uuummmm, uurgghh, I can't leave my review like this! Hmm...
Well, I thought Aria and Danichiro are totally terrible parents (even though I don't consider Aria Rea's mother for reasons everyone will soon(ish) find out)! The poor girl [Rea] was driven to try to kill herself! Although while she did try to kill herself it did not succeed, but later the next day she died from an accident anyway. Wow? And also, I really like Furuyan's (yep, I call him Furuyan) expressions in this one! Hehehehe, he isn't much of a pervert for a boy his age and I like him for that. He sure is cute when he blushes! Probably because he doesn't blush very often. Hehehehe, Furuyan<3

What a let down. This has nothing that made volume 1 good.
Not only was the story going downhill, but so were the characters.
We got several cases of pseudolesbianism, barely subtle, between Rea and Wanko, as if the latter wasn't sexualized enough already.
Also it is pretty odd that a zombie-nerd like Chihiro did not even suspect that Rea did not kiss but clearly bit his lips.
And not only did grandpa also know how to do the zombie potion, but he tells them that they have to figure out themselves on how to stop Rea's decomposition (aka otherwise there would be no story) and in senile mode he is harmless but when lucid he straight up molests his granddaughter.
And if this shit wasn't enough, Wanko sees Rea as a rival for Chihiru's affection, romantic affection... great, more incest (as Wanko is his cousin [later she says sister]).
And wow, Rea takes the "I am a zombie" thing pretty well. However why do we have her now being happy that Chihiru saved her when she was the one basically driving away the kidnappers of her fathers by swinging around a bench? He is the guy kidnapped shortly after by the guys. And how did these two skinny maids not only dare to "punish" Rea (her father and all) but why did she let them put her into a playboy bunny suit if she is so damn strong? Does the story need damsels in distress so much? The only thing missing is her being ashamed of her strength. And the obsessive and possibly incestuous father forces Chihiru to a fencing duel, Rea finally breaks free (still in her sexualized costume), Chihiru finally figures out that Rea slightly infected him during the "kiss" and the dad has in many ways a turn around (like his daughter and servants) and Chihiru wants them to cooperate. And there is some new woman I don't care about. In fact I don't give a shit about any of this anymore. What a downhill spiral.

I’m not very sucked into this series yet, but I really want to be. Maybe it’s just going slow at the moment or something, I don’t know.

I like Rea a lot, and am really interested in what’s going on with her. She and Chihiro are still figuring out how this whole zombie thing works, including how to fix the rigor mortis. Then there’s a big problem with her family, seeing as how her father doesn’t want to give her up. Her mother seems like a big jerk, and her father is still a huge creep. And honestly, I hope there’s more drama with them in the future.

Then there’s Chihiro’s cousin, who I’m just not a huge fan of. I’m not totally sure why, but I’m not. I love his little sister, and hope she shows up more; as well as his grandpa. I feel pretty averagely about Chihiro himself, too. He’s a nice character, pretty solid, but I just don’t feel very attached to him yet.

The ending suggests there’s a new character coming with some sort of surprise, although I don’t know what. I intend to pick up the next volume when I get the chance, as I do want to read more, but it’s not extremely high on my list.

The second volume of Sankarea follows on pretty much where the last one left us, with Rea in a state of rigor mortis. The story is just as good as the first volume and continues in the vein in which it began. Rea’s Father is looking for her with his own somewhat misguided interpretation of “protection” and Chihiro has stuck to his word of taking care of her.

I would definitely recommend continuing with this series, although if you’ve read the first book then I’m sure you’ll be wanting to anyway! I love the concept of this series and it’s something a little different from the other Mangas I’ve read. This has heavy handed hints to horror greats and is really well done. I love the artwork and the characters have a certain depth which is sometimes difficult to bring across in a Manga.

Definitely read this series, you’d be mad not to. They’re not that expensive and they don’t take long to read. Personally I love Reanimator by HP Lovecraft and I love the film with Jeffrey Combs so when I picked up this Manga and saw nods toward the film I fell in love there and then.

Any zombie OR manga fan should read this!

I’m enjoying this series far more than I ever expected! Rae’s overly controlling (and creepy) father is doing everything he can to get his preciously little girl back while Furuya has to figure out how to look after Rae. We get a reveal of who came up with the reanimation elixir as well as some plot twists that came out of nowhere! This volume has been fun and lighthearted, even though it’s got so disturbing events, and a LOT of ecchi. I did find the conflict between Rae’s father and Furuya to be rushed but overall I had fun! I really enjoyed the insert where the managka shows some initial sketches and the development of Rae’s character and the plot. Sankarea has caught my attention and I’m curious to see how things pan out.
