When historian Gwen Hoffman first meets time traveler Mike Garvin, an ex-Special Forces weapons sergeant back from ancient Gaul where he was embedded as a centurion in Julius Caesar's elite 10th Legion, she is more than a little put off. Scarred and dangerous-looking, the man appears more thug than time traveler. Yet he is the person TimeWarp, Inc. is sending back in time to protect Jeshua bar Yosef (Christ) from twenty-first century assassins; the man Gwen was assigned to prepare for life in first-century Galilee. Gwen, of course, has no idea she and Garvin will become lovers. Nor does she realize she herself will end up in Roman Palestine, where she will not only meet Jesus but face danger alongside Mike in the adventure of a lifetime...

Well... That was... interesting... Ok, truth be told, I'm really conflicted with this book, and believe you me, if you read it and manage NOT to get conflicted emotions yourself, then I'm gonnna find the nearest flat surface and bang my head on it - twice!

Gwen Hoffman is a historian working for TimeWarp, Inc. A shy mouse since childhood, Gwen is horrified to find out her new duties include not only briefing time-agent Sergeant Michael Garvin for his new mission to protect Jesus Christ from 21st century Iranian hitmen, but also pose as his girlfriend for the sake of the media. Mike terrifies her - his scarred face and dangerous aura proving too much for her bookwormish views - but she comes to find out there's more to him that what meets the eye. Can she and Mike manage to balance their attraction to each other and survive the assassins going after them and the savior of humanity?

TimeWarp, Inc. is a book a sci-fi fan MUST try out just for the sake of fun. The concept of time-travelling was an intriguing one - as a Whovian, I couldn't resist the theme - though, admittedly, the whole "let's save Jesus Christ" thing was not one of the writer's wisest ideas. It border-lined with certain religious matters, and it often forced the reader to choose a side. (NOTE: I recall mentioning in my Review Policy that I wouldn't accept titles that had religious themes in them but, like I said, the time-travelling and rescue theme seemed like fun.)
While the book started out in a confusing manner, and the first chapter was a chore to read, once the second chapter kicked and I finally made sense of what I was reading, my interest instantly picked up. The writer sure knows his time-travel stuff. And reality. While the amount of dysfunctional marriages in the book would trouble some, I found it a nice, realistic touch.

Even so, his research on romantic relationships was poor, which was a real let down. A relationship is a partnership. You give and take equally, and, with Gwen, such was not the case. I don't know if I've read too many romances in my life, but it seems like, lately, I've been "attracting" main heroines that seriously ruin the whole experience of reading a story for me. And Gwen was definitely one of those heroines. While she started out as an adorably, shy bookworm, her character got worse as the story progressed. Yes, she was not exactly a social butterfly, but it felt like, in many parts, the writer was trying too hard to convince us of that, even if we, the readers, were already painfully aware of it. Another part I hated was how easy she was to judge - and the extreme value she gave to rumors and appearances. Her attitude towards Mike at first showed just that, way before she started berating him all the time because of his personal belief and faith. Not to mention the fact she acted like she had every right to oggle handsome men - but God forbid Mike actually spared a second glance at another woman, or have a lover when he was a centurion two thousand years before she was even born!

The story is amazing in terms of action, humor and history. It certainly doesn't let a fan of the action and sci-fi genres down. Still, the emotional shallowness of the main heroine and the fact she showed no growth whatsoever - which was a pity, seeing the arsenal of characters Mr. Davis gifted us with was rather impressive without her - took away two very valuable stars from the book.

This was a nice read with some things that bugged me.

The time travelling was done really well I must say. Davis really thought about how it should work and made a believable time travel system. I liked Mike and the scenes with Mike in Gaul were really cool and intriguing.

Gwen however...
I really get tired of the trope where a woman isn't sexy because she's wearing glasses and no make-up, but as soon as she loses the glasses and puts on some lipstick she turns into a babe. And yes: that's what happens with Gwen. I will confess I contemplated putting the book down when for the third time it was mentioned how unsexy glasses-wearing Gwen was.

But I decided to read on and when Mike and Gwen meet the story gets back on track.

From there on out it's an interesting and suspenseful story. I must confess I had expected the story would focus more on Jesus, but instead it keeps its focus on Gwen and Mike and I think that's actually a good thing. I had feared it would become too religious, but (apart from some minor lecturing) that isn't the case luckily enough. Instead it's an enjoyable time travel adventure that is mostly straight forwards, but has a nice twist at the end.

All in all I liked this story and might pick up something else by Davis if the premise of the story sounds intriguing.

I got this book about three months ago through the blog and didn’t have the time due to work and life to get to it. This is something I’ve come to regret, as this is one of the best books I’ve read in a while.

It didn’t read like a debut novel at all. I loved everything about it. Characters, storytelling, plot, writing, good guys, bad guys, beginning, middle, end, everything. It became one of those books I like so much that I’m having problems writing this review without going into fanboy mode and get all gushy and tell you all to go get it ‘cause it’s just awesome. Ok. *deep breath* Let’s try and make some sense for a little bit.

The story follows Mike Garvin, Roman centurion of the 10th Legion, who turns out to also be Mike Garvin, time traveler sent back to document Cesar’s reign. There, he’s recalled back to current times by Harper, douche extraordinaire, for his new mission.

Iranians have obtained time travel technology and decided to get up and go kill Jesus, capital J, which would wreak havoc with pretty much everything: altering time, destroying western civilization and/or destroying the world. Take your pick.

The plot is what drew me in the beginning. It’s pretty intriguing, and I wanted to know what Mr. Davis would do with it. And what did he do? He made awesome sauce with it.

Like I said before, it didn’t feel like a debut novel at all. It’s very well written, and it flows smoothly from action to calm to conversation. Its rhythm was what kept me reading late into the night, not noticing how time went by as the story grabbed me and didn’t let go. Stealing a few pages where I could. Losing sleep so I could keep reading and find out how it would all end.

I liked the conversations between all the characters. Arguments felt real, and made me feel uncomfortable. (I don’t like confrontation.) The relationships evolved smoothly and, to me at least, like real ones would. The way the characters were portrayed fleshed them out wonderfully, each with their own personality, character and voice.

Jesus was a really fun character to read. The story takes place before he became Jesus, capital J, and he was a regular man – a funny, charming and perceptive regular man. I’m not much for religion, one way or the other, and the book doesn’t get too heavy on it, so don’t let that make you skittish. Just because it has Jesus in it, and some characters are devout, doesn’t make it a book on religion. It’s about time travel, and awesomeness. Plenty of it.

I even liked the ending! And I normally don’t like endings. Either because they suck, or because a story I came to enjoy so much finished. In this case, the way the author wrapped everything up, and the potential for more adventures, has my mind running.

I’m definitely following both this series and the author. There is so much potential here in both, I get excited just thinking about it! *squee*

One of the best things I’ve found reviewing here at Bibliophilia, Please, is new authors. It’s a joy to pick up a book/kindle and read a new story, written by someone new to it all, and have it be such a wonderful reading experience as this book was.

Ok. I’m going to stop now before I embarrass myself. Long story short: Read the book!

I loved the ending to this book and, though it feels as though this particular chapter has been
closed, it will be interesting to see where the author goes from here as it appears he plans more books in the series. I, for one, would certainly be interested in reading the further adventures of Timewarp Inc and look forward to future entries in the series! From the initial cover art, I was a tad worried that this might just be a bit of a turkey but, I am pleased to report, the perfect opposite is true instead! I enjoyed this much more than I expected to and found it an insightful and enjoyable read that almost made me feel as though I had been transported back in time myself!

What a stunning trip into the past! The thing I liked most about this book was that while the adventure takes the reader to the time of Christ, it doesn't shove Christianity down the reader's throat but instead provides perspectives on Christ from Christians, Jews, Agnostics, and even Aethiests. The tale was good though occasionally predictable, and there were a couple of small editing errors that could use correcting. But overall this is a great read!

a very good book that leaves the reader wanting to know more about not only the main characters but all of the characters.

Great! Someone's take on time travel and meeting Jesus before his ministry. Great perspective and gripping story.
