Back in the early 90's I had moved to Florida, and this book was recommended by a friend as a source of "colorful history" on the different cultures that make up this state. The book starts in 1843 with 'land pirates' in the keys, and ends with Hurricane Andrew in 1992. I would classify this book as 'historical fiction', and I found the book enthralling. Mayerson writes in a way that makes it difficult to put down if you like pseudo steamy romance novels..ha! I went in for the historic portrayals of early Key West, Miami, and Palm Beach. Who knew that West Palm Beach was settled by domestic workers for the rich Palm Beachers, (who had a 'sun-down' law), or that Miami was originally a tent city for rail workers building a railroad to Cuba for Henry Flagler. I don't know that I could ever look at Viscaya, or St. Augustine, or Key Largo the same way after reading this book. A great summer read for male or female.
