Electric fire, lit to the third bar.What this technique brings to mind, more and more frequently, are stage setting instructions in a screenplay. While some might argue that this type of "setting the scene" helps the reader visualize what's happening, I find the choppiness distracting, pulling my attention away from the story itself like a small child tugging on my sleeve and saying, "Look! Look!" Nevertheless, I enjoyed Original Skin and am happy to continue on to the third book in the series, Sorrow Bound.
