Adorable small town romance!
Alex is still deeply mourning the loss of her father and coping with legal issues involving her business. With no one left in her life, she readily agrees to pack up and head to Blueberry Cove, Maine, where she has taken on the giant task of refurbishing a dilapidated lighthouse. But, once she arrives, she has a fainting spell, which puts her ability to handle the job in question. However, her biggest obstacle is the local town sheriff, Logan McRae.
Logan inherited the Pelican Point lighthouse, which also came with some land and buildings, including the house he lives in. The trust money hasn’t been invested properly and so if he does put money into a restoration, his living quarters will get top priority. However, his meddling grandfather hired Alex without telling him. Now Logan has the unpleasant task of firing her, which he wastes no time in doing.
But before Alex can get leave town, Logan is cornered into allowing her to stay and at least put together an estimate for him. He’s not overjoyed about those developments, but allows Alex one week to get the job done. This gives Alex a narrow window of opportunity to prove to Logan she is up for the job, but she is determined to pull it off. However, it also makes time for the sizzling chemistry between the couple to flare into a full -blown flame!
I’ve read novels by Donna Kauffman over the years, but until just recently, I had lost track of her. After reading one of her latest releases, I wondered if I might have any of her other books lurking around on my Kindle. I had two of her books on my device, as it turns out, but since this was a ‘first in a series’ novel I picked it first.
I love lighthouses. They are so fascinating. A Simple concept in some ways, but what they represent is part of what makes them so special. So, of course, this book already had a plus mark in one column before I even started reading it. However, the story, which is built-up around the lighthouse restoration, checked all the other boxes in the plus column, as well.
The dialogue in this one is especially crisp. Alex and Logan exchange some lightening fast banter, some with a lot of sexual heat and some with a lot of emotional push and pull. The secondary characters were a hoot, and Logan really had his work cut out for him, once Alex barged into his life. Watching him squirm was highly entertaining.
The small -town atmosphere was delightful and charming, if a bit quirky. There are some poignant moments and emotional situations, due to the painful pasts both Alex and Logan need to make peace with. But, those moments are offset by plenty of humorous situations, some which make me chuckle.
I thoroughly enjoyed this first installment in the ‘Bachelors of Blueberry Cove’ series. I think I will hunt down the other installments in the series and work my way through them in the coming year.
I’m so glad I re-discovered this author and am looking forward to reading through her older titles and hope to see another new release coming in the near future.
Wonderful small town romance. Alex arrives in town at the request of one of the residents, to look at restoring the local lighthouse. She is the last surviving member of her family of lighthouse restoration experts and is trying to recover from the tragic death of her father. She needs this job for the money and to see if she still has what it takes to continue the work she loves. She hits town exhausted and hungry and promptly faints in the police chief's arms.
Logan is the police chief. He has his own tragedy in his past, but has found contentment in his hometown. His roots are deep and he likes taking care of the people of his town, even though they sometimes frustrate him. Logan also owns the lighthouse and other buildings, including the house he lives in. He has been working on the house himself when his job permits. He has resisted pressure to restore the lighthouse because of the memories attached to it, He isn't happy when his uncle goes behind his back and hires Alex.
There is an intense attraction between Logan and Alex from the beginning. I loved Alex's reaction to Logan's "sex god" voice. What they have is more than just chemistry. Each understands the other's pain and finds that pain shared is pain lessened. Though Logan resists Alex's presence at first, it isn't long before he wishes that she would stay. He knows that Alex's job takes her all over the country and world, and he is rooted in Blueberry Cove. He can't see any way that they can have a future together. Alex discovers a sense of home in Blueberry Cove that she's never had anywhere else. She's fallen just as hard for Logan, but like him, can't see a way to merge their lives.
I loved the interactions between Logan and Alex. Some of them are really funny, some are sweet, and some are truly heartwrenching. Their romance progresses in fits and starts, as they get closer but are pulled apart by their fears. Both have to look hard at what they really want from life, and they get there with a little assistance from the antique shop owner.
I loved the various residents of the town and their quirky natures. There were some funny times and moving times with a super soaker wielding old woman. The mayor and his wife make things interesting for Logan and Alex. I loved Logan's police sergeant and her sassy attitude, and the diner owner's tell it like it is approach to life. The flirtatious new Irishman in town is intriguing and I am really looking forward to his story.
This this is the first book in the series about a town & the eclectic lives that live in it.
Logan is the owner of the lighthouse in Pelican Point. He is also the town's police chief. His uncle Gus decided to hire a woman to help him restore the lighthouse for the tricentennial anniversary of the town. As soon as Alex arrives passing out from lack of sleep & hunger, in a completely sad state, he lets her sleep it off at his house & fires her the next morning.
Both Logan & Alex are getting over a loss & the insight of several people in town decide they need each other. Soooo really this is the story of overcoming grief, healing & new beginnings amongst some quirky townspeople.
This was a great novel that I read straight through. It was a fast easy read that I plowed through. I am greatful to have rediscovered this author. I will read more from this author & cannot wait for the next book in this series.
PELICAN POINT by Donna Kauffman (BACHELORS OF BLUEBERRY COVE #1) ARC Review
My rating: 4 of 5 ⭐️
Broken down on the side of the road, Alex McFarland feels like she has finally hit rock bottom. After a devastating loss, the lighthouse renovation specialist is on her way to Blueberry Cove, Maine, to attempt to hang on to the dregs of a business that is all she has left. No ties left to anyone or anywhere, She is desperate to reconnect with her roots, transient as they might have been, but solidly founded in the history and architecture of lighthouses all over the world, and restoring them to their former glory.
Born and raised in small-town Maine, Chief of Police, Logan MCrae has never felt the urge to leave Blueberry Cove or his beloved Pelican Point. He has always been content to take care of his town, his people and his property, the best he knows how. Though friendly with most of the population, Logan never was one for socializing, even though his uncle Fergus couldn't help but push him on the subject. In fact, that same uncle Fergus had him seething right now, having hired a contractor to work on HIS lighthouse behind his back. He almost missed the truck and trailer on the side of the road.
Not one of Alex' finer moments, that's for sure, being carried off half-starved and in the midst of what can only be called a mental breakdown by a man with the voice of a sex-God.......who turned out to be the Chief of Police! Not to mention finding out that same 'sex-God' was the owner of the lighthouse she was supposedly there to work on for the foreseeable future, except he didn't want her there. And Alex sure won't stay where she isn't wanted, although for right now she doesn't have much of a choice, And did I mention he has the voice of a sex-God?
Logan has no idea what possessed him to take the frail and obviously damaged woman into his home, but since it is obvious his uncle Fergus is the reason for her being here, he feels somewhat responsible for her. Yes, that must be it. Except, why is it that she stirred things in him without even saying much. Things that haven't been 'stirred' in a good long time. But he won't allow himself to go there, he belongs here on Pelican Point, and she.........she will eventually leave.
With the help of his uncle, Alex manages to convince Logan to at least let her have a look at the property, and while he allows her some time to give him an idea of the work that might be involved, he is clear the lighthouse cannot be his priority at this time. But a finger is all Alex needs, somehow she finds a way to settle into the community, or rather, the community settles in around her. And before she knows it, she has found a place, friends and a man to love.......if he'll have her.
*****
A lovely, warm small-town story, full of promise and hope. Written with a generous helping of wry humour and a touch of mystique to make for a seamless and flowing good read.
At first I was afraid the book would be too descriptive for my tastes, especially the first chapter was a bit daunting. But as I pushed forward, it started paying off in buckets! I personally don't feel the need for a 'setting of the scene' so to speak, but I understand that others seem to enjoy some help with their initial visualization, hence that first chapter, which is often used to set a tone, an atmosphere or a scene. I could have done without.
However, the dialogues that followed, the quirky village characters, the easy banter and ad lib remarks between Alex and Logan and the delicious chemistry (now there is one place I don't mind that descriptive tendency) more than make up for it.
Alex is obviously at a low in her life and lost at sea without anchor. Her life had always been centred around her family and now that it is gone, there is nothing for her to grab a hold of and she keeps grabbing back, trying to find a remnant of something. While instead she should be reaching forward, opening up to possibilities and options. But they come with risk and fear of the unkown and sometimes it takes a little shove to get your feet moving.
Logan has had hardship in his life when he was younger, but he had an anchor, some solid deep roots. Unfortunately those deep roots kept him in place, immobile in fact. So much so that he was able to focus everywhere but on himself, which is why he never gave himself that final closure, even though his grief no longer was active. His self seclusion was his safety, until Alex came along, he had no desire to reach out.
Each was a catalyst for the other. Logan helped Alex find her roots and set anchor, while Alex helped Logan loosen the hold of his.
✨A witty, moving, and sweetly seductive story of home.✨

This is my first time reading one of Ms. Kauffman's books. The beginning didn't start out so well for me. She put in a lot of details on lighthouse restoring and while some might appreciate those details, it distracted me from they story. I pushed through that first chapter, though and I'm SO glad I did!
Logan and Alex's first meeting was classic. She faints into his arms and hears his "Sex-god" voice. They are both overcoming a tragic loss. They dance around each other, trying not to get involved but of course the inevitable happens, they have too much chemistry for it not to!
They end up helping each other to move on with their lives. It was such an emotional read. The story just takes you by the heart and squeezes until you've finished. The characters are well fleshed out and full of character. I love how it has a slightly mystical aspect in the antique shop owner. I can't wait until Brodie's story is released, it will be nice to see how it turns out for him. This was an exciting start to a new small town series.
I was given an ARC of this by the publisher Kensington Books and NetGalley for an honest review.
This book is why I read Donna Kauffman. It has a great story, deft characterization, true emotion, and fun dialogue. But the chemistry between Alex and Logan caused sparks to fly out of my ereader. Well, not literally but I was completely sucked in. I loved every minute. Also, I lived in Washington County a few years ago, and she writes the feeling of the place so very well. Not many tourists make it to Machias or Calais or Lubec, but they are well worth the trip. Until then, we have this lovely series.
This was a solid start to a small town series. I was enjoying it, and again, life happened and so my mind kept wandering on the latter half of the audio. So I feel like it's almost unfair to even rate it. I missed quite a few things, I'm sure, but not enough to want to re-listen. I'll likely give the next one a try.
Donna Kauffman welcomes readers to Blueberry Cove with Pelican Point, the first installment in her wonderful new series set in a small town in Maine.
Logan Mcrae loves his life in Blueberry Cove. Although his sisters had moved on to pastures new and made lives for themselves elsewhere, Logan has never been tempted by the glittering lights of the big cities and has no intention of ever leaving his home town. As the town’s Chief of Police, Logan’s free time is limited. Having to juggle keeping the peace with the demands of his challenging job is no picnic, but Logan wouldn’t have it any other way. With the town’s tricentennial coming up, Logan has got to make room in his already packed schedule to ensure that no incident befalls this most august of celebrations. Pelican Point, the town’s only lighthouse, is in desperate need of restoration and Logan is not exactly pleased when his uncle Gus goes behind his back and hires Alex McFarland to do the job. Logan is determined to send this expert away and save his beloved uncle a fortune. However, when he claps eyes on Alex, Logan cannot help but be drawn to this beautiful woman – who is as far removed from his idea of a lighthouse restorer as it is possible to get!
Taking on a restoration job of such magnitude was not one of Alex McFarland’s best ideas. With her entire work force consisting solely of herself, Alex cannot help but wonder whether she’s bitten off more than she can chew. But with this job being the only thing keeping her from bankruptcy, Alex realizes that she’s got no other option but to do the best job she possibly can – or else risk ending up in the gutter without a single cent to her name. Determined to figure out how to save the business that had been in the McFarland family for generations, Alex vows to put all the pain and heartbreak of the last couple of months behind her and try her hardest to keep her head above water and McFarland & Sons a viable business venture. Unfortunately, Lady Luck seems to have given up on her because on her way to Blueberry Cove, her truck breaks down! As if that wasn’t mortifying enough, Alex is rescued by Logan McRae, who is not only drop dead gorgeous, but also the man whose family owns the lighthouse she will be restoring!
But the more time she spends in Blueberry Cove, the more Alex realizes that it isn’t just the lighthouse that she is restoring, but also herself. Embraced by the community, blown away by her beautiful surroundings and swept off her feet by sexy Logan, Alex begins to feel whole for the very first time in a very long while. Is there light at the end of the tunnel for grief-stricken Alex in Blueberry Cove? Will she manage to pick up the pieces of her life and make a new beginning in the beautiful small town with the man she has fallen head over heels in love with? Or will she be forever tormented by events from her past and condemned to a lifetime of loneliness?
If you like Jill Shalvis’ Lucky Harbor series and Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold tales, you are going to love Donna Kauffman’s fabulous stories set in Blueberry Cove. Pelican Point is a poignant, sweet, tender and steamy love story with a gorgeous hero you’ll adore and a fabulous heroine you cannot help but love. Add a cast of eccentric but charming supporting characters, humour, pathos and charm and you’ve got a book that’s simply too good to miss!
Pelican Point is a terrific tale about healing from old wounds, finding the courage to start again when life has knocked you down and taking a chance on love that is absolutely impossible to put down. Donna Kauffman is a terrific writer who has written a gripping, compelling, emotionally satisfying and heart-warming story that made me want to pack my bags and get on the first flight to Maine. She brings to vivid life the beauty, the camaraderie and the joys of small town life and she beautifully captures the heartbreak, elation and wonder of falling in love.
Pelican Point was my first Donna Kauffman book, but it certainly won’t be my last!
Donna Kauffman's sexy, fun, and moving Pelican Point is a five star winner!
A lighthouse, the coast of Maine, a brooding hunky hero with a sex god voice, and a strong, beautiful heroine overcoming emotional challenges - what more could you ask for in a romance? Well how about a little implied magic, another hunk with an Irish brogue, a tell-it-like-it-is diner owner, a pub owner uncle that everyone wants to hug, and a grumpy proprietor of an antique shop with very special tree growing within in it.
If this all sounds as fascinating to you as it did to me, you won't be able to put down Pelican Point either. The first of Donna Kauffman's Bachelors of Blueberry Cove novels, I received it from the publisher late Sunday night and was reading it until the wee hours on Monday morning. It was worth the slightly bloodshot eyes - and strong cup of coffee - as I fell in love with Kauffman's novel and don't regret a moment of lost sleep.
We first encounter Alex, a lighthouse restorer who has just experienced severe emotional trauma, having a mini-breakdown as she wends her way to Pelican Point and a dilapidated lighthouse. Police chief Logan is first on the scene to help her - and is also the owner of the property she is heading to. What transpires between these two guarded individuals is magic - and not just the kind that might be found in the antique store.
The way that Kauffman provides us with their inner journey through emotional heartaches, which could have permanently crippled them, is enlightening and inspiring. The romance is beautiful and their encounters are quite hot, and even when the water heater runs empty, their generated heat could steam the shower mirror.
I was really looking forward to this book as I enjoy Kauffman's deft touch with characters and absolutely love stories set in Maine, my home away from home. But this book surpassed my expectations. It's perfect reading at this time of year as the story is set around Thanksgiving. I highly recommend Pelican Point with a five star salute and look forward to the next book in the series, Half Moon Harbor, to be released in April 2014. An excerpt is contained at the end of Pelican Point and am really looking forward to hearing more of Brodie's Irish brogue.
Given that my own career background is in restorations (running a cottage restoration business), I expected to find an affinity with this book and so was keen to read it. The book didn’t disappoint, with plenty to interest those who, like me, find restoration fascinating.
But there was so much more to like in the book too!
The opening is really quite dramatic, and it hooked me in at once. I loved the characters, and quickly connected to them. There is so much depth to the characterisation, and so much pain in Alex, particularly, that a reader is hard pushed not to feel empathy and want to follow the journey from lost to found. The backstories on both the main characters are compelling and well explored, and the characters’ actions and reactions in view of their pasts felt realistic to me. I really liked the fact that the author wasn’t afraid to probe deeply into their emotions, which created a big emotional attachment in me as I read.
The romance is passionate, fun and poignant in equal measure. I loved the realism inherent in it – the fact that the author does not wait until the very end to bring the characters’ together, but depicts a more typical, real-world romance in which two characters stumble along, ‘winging it’, uncertain and frightened to let go of the past and move forwards.
I loved the slight edge of mysticism in the book; the idea that ‘change is coming’ and that Alex’s presence in Blueberry Cove (wonderful name!) is predestined. There’s also a good deal of quirkiness, which is appealing – and I really warmed to the community aspects of the story.
Don’t we all feel a pull towards a fictional world in which a small town takes in a lost sheep and becomes a new and accepting family? Overall, this book felt to me like wrapping up in a soft blanket on a wintry day – comforting and heart-warming. Certainly one to read to restore your faith in love, life and finding a place to belong.
I was offered this book in exchange for a fair review via NetGalley.
I received this book through netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to netgalley.com, Kensington Books, and Donna Kauffman.
This was a wonderful story and I look forward to reading more in this series. I'm not typically a big fan of romance novels (although I read one every now and then) but I love Kensington Books so I thought I'd give it a chance. I'm so glad that I did!
Alex travels to Blueberry Cove, Maine to restore the Pelican Point lighthouse. Restoring lighthouses has been her life's work and she can't imagine doing anything else. She recently lost her father in a tragic accident and is at a crossroads in her life. She needs to decide if her heart can bear continuing with her trade in lighthouse repair without her father by her side. This project in Blueberry Cover is her chance - she needs to prove to herself that she can overcome her loss. Logan, the owner of the lighthouse, sweeps her off her feet. But he, too, has tragedy and loss in his past and must work through it to decide on the future of the beloved lighthouse...and his future as well.
Donna Kauffman makes the reader fall in love with both Alex and Logan. You just can't help but hope that there is a "happily ever after" in their future. She also does a fantastic job with the setting and descriptions of the lighthouse and cottage restorations. She makes the reader want to pack their bags and head to Blueberry Cove. What a great story! I recommend this to all romance fans. 4 Stars.
November in Maine heats up in this contemporary romance. Alex McFarland didn’t plan on making her entrance in Blueberry Cove by fainting into the arms of Logan McCrae – police chief, owner of Pelican Point lighthouse, and bachelor. She’s here to assess and restore the lighthouse and associated buildings. It’s also her opportunity to discover if she needs to change the direction of her life. Logan thinks he has figured out his life and is working a job he loves in the place he belongs. He’s about to learn what’s lacking in his life when Alex stirs emotions long dormant. The external action stays simple and believable in this story. It’s the internal changes forced on both Alex and Logan which supply the turmoil. Interesting characters fill out the community and supply possibilities for future tales.
A great start to a new series from Donna Kauffman. Ms. Kauffman has created an enchanting world in Blueberry Cove. Wonderful, quirky characters abound, as well as a bit of "magic" in the air.I have fallen in love with this town. But, the story, the story kept me reading far too late into the night. I read straight through and didn't regret a minute. The lead couple is so strongly detailed and drawn, that they leap off the page. I was totally emotionally invested in the outcome of their story. The pacing was even, the settings beautifully detailed, and the happily ever after, wonderful. *I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
Small town romance that is just waiting for the Hallmark Channel to pick it up. I was surprised by the brevity of the story. I loved how some of the townsfolk were introduced and the scenery was well described but there was something lacking with main characters' depth. Both were coming from sad and lonely and tragedy and yet. I loved Donna Kauffman with her Glass Slipper series and its the only reason for the 4th star.
I really didn't know what to expect with this one but I was drawn to the setting so I gave it a shot.
I'm glad I did.
I think I expected more Chick Lit and less Romance but I actually got the opposite. This definitely brought the heat and was not as tame as I thought it would be.
It was a little wordy but I was interested in what was happening so that was all good. Aaaaannndddd, it could have had a bit more dialogue and less thinking but overall it was a good time and I plan to continue the series and also check out the Authors other stories.
It's fun to see a book come across your feed sometimes that you've never heard of and it works.

If you’ve followed my reviews, you’d probably discover two things about my reading. One, Donna Kauffman is an auto-buy author for me and two, I’ve recently developed a love for small-town contemporary romances. So, it’s not entirely surprising that I’m reading and reviewing Pelican Point, since it falls neatly into both of those categories. And Ms Kauffman has not disappointed with this start of a new series set on the Maine Coast.
Let me start by saying that since this is the start of the series, there is the usual setting up of the town and it’s residents. That said, this book mainly revolves around Logan, the town cop and owner of the historic lighthouse in town, and Alex, the woman brought to town by Logan’s uncle to restore that lighthouse. Logan is tired of the town interfering in his life, so he’s frustrated when Alex shows up courtesy of his uncle. The lighthouse holds some long buried memories as well as a financial burden and Logan’s not happy that Alex is in town. Alex recently lost her father and endured a painful lawsuit and in order to save her family’s business she’s in Blueberry Cove.
Logan is your typical romance hero. He’s an alpha male, not really looking for love or a relationship, but falls pretty hard when he meets Alex. Alex is a little unique. I mean, she’s pretty typical in that most romance heroines these days are strong and independent, but I think it’s more Alex’s career that sets her apart and makes her stand out. The romance between these two starts out more as friends with benefits and then blossoms.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the chemistry and interactions between Logan and Alex. There were entertaining secondary characters including Delia (the cafe owner), Fergus (Logan’s uncle), Brodie (new resident, shipbuilder) and Eula (mysterious elderly shop owner). There were laugh out loud moments (picture a town hall meeting held up with a water gun) and I shed a couple tears. My first trip to Blueberry Cove was quite memorable and I can’t wait to return.
Pelican Point by Donna Kauffman Change is coming to the island so keep an open mind about it. How true this is in my life with the ferry and others who want to take it over. Love the island life but I mostly live on the mainland and treasure my time there. Small community where everybody helps one another out. Logan McCrae is the police chief and makes his rounds and attempts to keep things running smoothly. The town's anniversary date is in a few years and some want money to fix up the lighthouse at Pelican Point. Some from the island contacted Alex MacFarland to join them in coming up with an estimate. She doesn't know what she was thinking... He rescues her when she arrives in town but she's not eatten for hours and she's so tired she passes out. The EMT hands her over to Logan and he takes her to his house and when he puts her into the guest bed she kisses him, several times. He's highly aroused from the kissing lady who's asleep again and it's after midnight so he goes to bed. He doesn't hire her to restore the lighthouse for many reasons but his uncle has her stay around to do other jobs and to give a report on what would be needed. She is also staying in his guest room. She first starts with the light keep house and it's many additions-love the architecture discussed about the building. They each have had tragic accidents to loved ones in the past. She sketches the rooms and falls asleep on his bed til he walks in... hot steamy sex scenes but they do get to talk about their past losses... They do find a way to heal one anothers' hurts... Book also includes an excerpt of the next book in the series-about Brodie. I received this book from The Kennsington Books via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
This serves as a reminder to myself - read book covers a little more carefully! In a hurry to get something to read on a trip I picked up this one without realizing that it is in the Romance novels stable. Fine print also said series called "The Bachelors of Blueberry Cove". So I was stuck with it on my trip and read it through. In spite of the gratuitous graphic tawdry sex scenes and language, I had hopes that there might be some interesting info about restoring lighthouses as that was the superficial premise. But no, just ick all the way through. Lesson learned. Can't say there won't come a day when such escapism might be fun, but not now.
Good read. The heroine is a restorer of lighthouses and the hero owns one. She is recovering from her father's death from a fall from a lighthouse they were restoring and its aftermath. He has been covering himself in his work as a small town police chief and the little bit of restoration work he's had time to do in order to avoid dealing with the pain in his past. And of course they strike sparks off each other. It's a nice story about opening up to possibilities, and second chances. I liked it.
New author for me and a good first start to this series. Donna Kauffman's descriptions of the lighthouse and Maine coast make me want to travel that week. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
three stars only because there was far to much internal talking. Thinking thing over and over. talking them to death. Not a whole lot actually happened. However I admit to being sucked into this town and need to know what happens next.
This is the first in the Bachelors of Blueberry Cove and like the Brides and other Bachelors books I quite enjoyed it and all of the different characters. I did read the series is the wrong order as the Bachelors series comes first.
Setting: Burberry Cove, Maine Contemporary to 2013 Genre: Romance While his 3 younger sisters took off for college and professional lives, or to explore the world, Logan McCrae returned to his little hometown of Blueberry Cove To join the police force and become one of the youngest in the position. He feels an obligation, not just to the town, but also his family’s legacy. The McCraes were the light keepers at Pelican Point from when it was built in the 1700s to when it was decommissioned in the 1970s, at which time they bought it from the state. It, along with the keeper’s cottage and the larger family home from the 1800s are in need of repair. So, without his knowledge, Logan’s great uncle calls in McFarland & Sons, specialists in lighthouse restoration to get the job done. Alex is the last McFarland in the company. In fact, the company has been reduced to an ancient truck, some good tools, and her knowledge and experience, since her father’s fatal accident. She desperately needs the job restoring this lighthouse. It will take 2 years, and she can use that time to decide what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Continue the business, or find something new? Logan does not want to hire Alex. It isn’t that he doesn’t think she can do it (how refreshing not to have a sexist prick for the male protagonist, which is so often a device in novels in which the female has a conventionally masculine profession). Instead, it is a matter of money, and at the moment, restoring the house is more important. So she finagles her way into that business for a limited time (He’s allowing her to stay while she lines up another restoration job) while trying to convince him about the lighthouse. Logan and Alex are attracted to one another, but their respective baggage keeps getting in the way of their achieving happiness. The narration by Lauren Fortgang is very good. She differentiates well between male and female characters, she does a passable nor’easter accent when called for, and gives adequate accents to the two Irish characters.
I read the entire Brides of Blueberry Cove series (about Logan’s younger sisters) without any knowledge that the Bachelor series even existed! Now I am kicking myself. Donna Kaufman’s seaside town and its lively residents, most of them with roots that go back generations, could not be more charming.
As the police chief of Blueberry Cove, Logan McCrae’s hands are always full with town mischief. Perhaps the lack of free time in his life explains why the lighthouse on Pelican Point, which is the mark of the McCrae legacy, along with the keeper’s cottage and main house are in such desperate need of maintenance. When Alex McFarland arrives to undertake the task of restoring these landmarks for the town tricentennial, she is at a crossroads in her life. With her father’s passing and lawsuit still raw, she desperately needs a new project that will spark her passion and get her life back on track.
Kauffman put so much thought into the little details, which gave this book such rich character. Alex is a complete spitfire whom I adored from the moment her first one-liner escaped her mouth. I was utterly charmed by the sprawling oak at Mossy Cup Antiques, Delia’s breakfast place, and Fergus’ Irish brogue behind the bar at the Rusty Puffin.
Alex McFarland has arrived in Pelican Point to make a bid on fixing the old lighthouse. She was raised in the family business to know just how to do that. But she is the last of her family. Her father died in an accident and she has been through the wringer in the last year trying to keep it together while tying up the affairs of her father and swamped by grief. She is trying to move on with her life and get back into the renovations projects she loves. She meets Logan McCrae, the owner of the lighthouse under the worst circumstances. She is tired and exhausted and faints from lack of sleep and total exhaustion. Logan is used to doing everything on his own and is not the least bit interested in having Alex do anything. Her is trying to give her the bum's rush out of town. However, Alex meets Logan's grandfather and a few other meddling town folks while there and they are thinking Alex and Logan could be good for each other. A heartwarming story about building a new home and building a family for yourself even if you thought hope had been lost.
Alex MacFarland has come to Blueberry Cove, Maine, to restore the lighthouse on Pelican Point. The past year has been one of devastating loss and she needs to find out if she can continue in the family business of restoring lighthouses. Logan McCrae catches her at one of her lowest points as she finally has a meltdown after her old truck gets a flat tire when she has almost reached her destination. Unknown to her is that Logan is the owner of the lighthouse. He too has suffered a major loss, his fiancee in a tragic boating accident. Logan is the police chief and has deep roots in his community and Alex has always had a life moving from one lighthouse project to another. Finding their way to a happily ever after is not easy.
Bachelors of Blueberry Cove #3 I read the spinoff series – Brides of Blueberry Cove – before discovering this series, which is actually its predecessor. Had I known I would've read them in the correct order. These are fun and enjoyable reads. Nothing too heavy, and eventually they all get their happily ever after… Though it may not be the one they initially thought they'd get.
I'd also like to say that even though these books will not go on my reread shelf, they were still worth the read. Enjoy!
