Charles Butler Hunt was executive director of the American Geological Institute (1954-55), a professor of geography and environmental engineering at Johns Hopkins University (1961-1973), and adjunct professor of earth science at New Mexico State University.

Professor Hunt completed the notebooks of Grove Karl Gilbert, a 19th-century geologist.
