Sage is a merman and eldest son of the king. His life consists of training to ascend to the throne, a job he has no interest in taking. When events bring him face to face with Gary, a young human, he can't get the man off his mind. He welcomes the distraction, but never planned on the feelings Gary stirred inside him.

Gary seeks more from life. Working, when he would rather be painting, he struggles to find a happy medium. When Sage swims into his life, filling that void, he wonders if things could finally be looking up.

As the two explore their new friendship, events spiral out of control putting Sage in danger. He fights to be with Gary, but there are secrets between them, ones that some people would kill to protect.

I got all the way to 70% before I realized that I don’t care for anyone or anything in this book.

I could have still finished it, probably, since the story wasn’t all that terrible. However the fact that Gary started kissing and groping some other dude only after a week of Sage’s disappearance turned me off completely.

2 stars for the pre-Derrick part.

I really wanted to give this book a higher rating because I love mermans. As Ruby Rod from the fifth element would say "there was no fiyah, no fiyah" for me it was not "hot, hot, hot". The lack of action was got to me, when I though the story would come at a cresendo it was actually a hum.

Oh boy, so hard to say something that make sense after finishing this book... But I will try.

The plot

In a ordinary day, an ordinary man will have everything turned up side down. Gary saving a child in a beach will met Sage, a mysterious man that will keep appearing in his life, in unexpected ways.
With no address
No cellphone
No contact... Just a strong sex encounter or something more? Love...

This is a romance
And maybe that's why I'm a little disappointed.
Let me say I admit I'm weird. I'm very weird. Maybe it's unethical write a review using another writer as example but I have to, to justify why I'm giving 3 stars.
I don't know if you read contemporary romance, if you do probably you know this writer: Andrew Grey. I do know his works. I read all his Love Means series, also his Of Love series and much more series. It's impressive how many books I read and loved. I'm not kidding you, is more than 15 contemporary romances, and the majority got my 5 stars. And... Weird as it may sounds... I never finish his book, Child of Joy, even if I'm first of all a fantasy/sci-fi reader, not a contemporary romance reader.
Why, you may ask... Why the same writer, have such different reactions from me? Because of the genre of the book... That's my answer.

I have much more expectations reading a fantasy, sci-fi or paranormal-romance, than when I read a contemporary romance
This book is good. I enjoy it. But I didn't loved it... Why? Because it's to weak for my taste. The mermen world is described just for few sentences.... Sage go hunt with some other mermen from the clans? I want it... I want each fin flip, bite in the fish flesh, sensation of the water in the merman tail... I want those descriptions... While I don't want so much from the human world, as how Gary paint, sell the scuba diving stuff, or eat in his couch. I want more, each single detail about the mermen, the reason I'm reading it, not each detail, each single breath from the human. It's too easy, tell me about the human world, while the real challenge is the underwater world... What call my attention reading the blurb.
That's what my problem with this story is.
The anticlimactic and flat storyline was so romantic and beautiful for a contemporary romance, but this is not... And I keep wanting more, and the book finish, leaving me disappointed.

The book is just the begin of a series, I saw the writer announcement but how can I keep reading if after more than 200 pages I had nothing I want? I'm curious?
Yes
I want to know what will happen now?
Yes
Do I trust the next book will be less about the human world, and more about the mermen's reality?
No
And this single, and maybe insignificant, "no" is the reason I don't think I will keep reading if it will be a series... And the reason of my 3 stars

Obs: I had minor problems also with the lack of positive feminine characters. The only feminine character is a vicious bitch, mentioned just as someone that cut the fun of Gary and his friends... Neither one secondary or quick appearance of a strong and pleasant feminine character in the books, and it upset me.

I love romances with mermen...but most of the m/m merman romances I have read have fallen flat. This was excellent! I really loved the world building and politics involved in Sage's world. This is not one of those "oh the guy has a tail...let's have sex!" Short stories. This was very well written, entertaining, and had some great characters. I want a happy ending for Derrick! And I would love to read more about Gary and Sage now that Gary knows everything. Here's hoping that there will be more very soon, either with Gary and Sage or maybe Sage's brothers? Either way, I can't wait to read more.

E.M. Leya is becoming my "Go-To"-Author when it comes to reading a new M/M story.

Her latest work brings you into the world of Mermen.

I admit, I was a bit skeptical as I couldn't imagine how that would play out in the world of M/M fiction, but E.M. managed not only to create a fantastic story, but set the foundation for a whole series.

Can't wait to find out what Sage, Randy, Everest and the others came up with next.

Well done, E.M.!

I only gave it 3 because Gary was listen, irritating twat. I do not know if I would agree in the novel from this author.
