In their new Keeper roles, these extraordinary women must balance the fate of the world with their desires….
As a crime beat reporter, Barrie Gryffald's work is risky enough when she's investigating mortal homicides. But when a teenage shifter and an infamous Hollywood mogul are both found dead on the same night, her Keeper intuition screams, Otherworldly.
Reluctantly, she enlists her secret crush, Mick Townsend, a journalist with movie-star appeal. Together, they dig up eerie parallels to a forgotten cult-film tragedy. But it may be too late. With a cast of suspects ranging from vampire junkies to the ghosts of Hollywood past, no one can be trusted. Least of all Mick, who may well prove to be as unpredictable as the Others Barrie is sworn to protect….

In my paranormal and supernatural thrillers, I like to cross the possibility of the supernatural with very real life explanations for any strangeness going on, and base the action squarely in fact. THE UNSEEN is based on real paranormal research conducted at the Duke University parapsychology lab, and BOOK OF SHADOWS teams a Boston homicide detective and a practicing Salem witch in a race to solve what may be a Satanic killing. THE SPACE BETWEEN is an edgy supernatural YA about a troubled high school girl who is having dreams of a terrible massacre at her school, and becomes convinced that she can prevent the shooting if she can unravel the dream.

Barrymore (Barrie) Gryffald is the Keeper for Shapeshifters in LA. When one of her teenage charges, a street kid named Tiger, is found murdered Barry pulls out all the stops to find his killer. The same night Tiger is killed by an OD, another famous movie mogul is killed by the same drug found in Tiger system. The connection, the tragic murder of Tiger is surprisingly similar to a 15 yr old death of an famous teen movie star and Tiger just so happens to be able to shift into a dead ringer of this star...The movie was called Otherworld.
Barrie keeps running into the gorgeous Mike Townsend, a fellow reporter, during her investigations. The physical connection is immediate, but his ability to discover detailed information about her investigation is worrisome.
As more people connected to the Otherworld movie begin to die, Barrie must decide who she can trust in a world where lies and face changes are the norm.
This is a fantastic addition to The Keepers: LA series. Fast paced, action packed with more twist and turns than a rollercoaster, Keeper of The Shadows really was a spectacular read. Did I mention a hot but secretive Mick... Never knowing what might happen next, this story will keep you on the edge of your seat.
This ARC copy of Keeper of the Shadows was given to me by Harlequin Nocturne in exchange for an honest review.
Every once in a while I read a book that speaks to a few of the things I Nerd out about and feels like it was written for me! Keeper of the Shadows is one of those books. Yes, it’s part of a series and yes it’s where I started..and yes I kept reading (obviously) once I leaned this. The romance is between Barrie and Mick. Barrie is a crime journalist by today but her main job and passion is as a Keeper; she’s entrusted to keep silently keep the peace between the Others who roam around us everyday hidden in plain sight and our human world. A teenage shifter named Tiger who could shift into dead teen boy Old Hollywood stars is murdered and as one of the kids Barrie used to check up on in the sleazy section of Hollywood he turned tricks to survive, she’s determined to solve his murder. Classic Hollywood. Shifters. Romance. I loved it. Immediately went on Thriftbooks and ordered the entire series!
3.5 stars = I liked it - Barrie uses her position as Hollywood beat reporter to keep an eye out for supernaturals misbehaving, because her day job is Keeper to the Shifters of Los Angeles. When a young shifter is found dead, Barrie connects the dots to another high profile murder, and while she's trying to keep her investigation on the down low, fellow journalist Mick ends up just one step ahead of her every time she tries to pursue a lead. But Mick's more than willing to team up, even though Barrie is finding it hard to keep her distance from the intriguing Mick - being Keeper means that she's hiding secrets she's not free to share.
I really liked the Hollywood setting and the presence of Shifters (people shifters) in this world. There is a decent murder mystery in the background and a romance in the foreground - I did catch one of the twist to the story, but the final reveal of 'who done it' was a surprise.
I am late to the Keepers world(this is the last book in the second of these three author trilogies) but I liked Keeper of Shadows a lot - enough that I will likely go back and read the new to me Sokoloff's book in of the first trilogy.
This one was just as much fun as the previous two. Barrie really kicks butt and doesn’t hesitate to jump right into the middle of the action. She’s feisty and takes her role as Keeper of the Shapeshifters seriously. And then there is Mick - ooh-la-la (need I say more?)
I just love how this trilogy was written. Keeper of the Shadows is the final book, each written by a different author. I thought the author did a great job closing this second trilogy in the Keeper series.
Many thanks to Harlequin, via Netgalley, for allowing me to read this in exchange for an unbiased review.
I enjoyed the story in this book, but I was also a bit disappointed. The first two books in the series were told from both the male and female protagonists' points of view while this one was told entirely through Barrie's. I missed having the male point of view mixed in. I guessed pretty early on who Mick really was, though Alexandra Sokoloff didn't reveal it until much later in the book. I was glad to see Darius finally taken down. I think we probably all disliked him from the start. There were moments where I wondered if he was just cut-throat, but not necessarily a bad human being (or, rather, vampire), but he continued to rub me the wrong way. In the end, Rhiannon's summation of him at the beginning of book one, Keeper of the Night, was spot on. As a whole, this book would've done a great job concluding a trilogy, but the series isn't over yet. It makes me incredibly curious to see where Heather Graham will go with book four, Keeper of the Dawn. Knowing it won't be a story about one of the Keepers makes me unsure how well it will fit in with the rest of the series, but at least Alessande played a huge role in book two, Keeper of the Moon, so it won't be full of entirely unfamiliar characters. Hopefully we'll at least see the Gryffald cousins maintain a large role in book four of the series.

Ancestral Keepers Rhiannon, Sailor Ann, and Barrymore Gryffald keep the peace between the supernatural communities in the shadowy Otherworld of Hollywood, where the mortals can be as strange—and dangerous—as the paranormals.
When a teenage shifter is found dead on Hollywood Boulevard on the same night as a studio head dies in suspicious circumstances, Shapeshifter Keeper Barrymore Gryffald is sure the deaths are connected. She discovers an eerie parallel to a fifteen-year old tragedy: the mysterious death of an iconic teenage movie star on the set of a cult movie about the Otherworld. Barrie reluctantly teams with the gorgeous and enigmatic Mick Townsend, a rival journalist on her paper, to dig into the movie's history and a cast of suspects that range from teenage runaways to international movie stars. As more victims surface, Barrie can trust no one, least of all Mick, who may well prove to be as inconstant as the shifters Barrie is sworn to protect.
My Thoughts
The Gryffald cousins are respective keepers of the Los Angeles area "others", those paranormal beings who humankind has always glamorized as being something make believe but as Rhiannon, Sailor and Barrie know the Vampires, Weres, Elven, Shapeshifters and more are as real as it gets and their job is to make sure that humans keep thinking they are fantasy creatures as well as keeping humans safe from any "other" who believes that a mortal is fair game for them.
As Vampire Keeper Rhiannon has the job of keeping a tight grip on rogue blood drinkers, Sailor as Elven Keeper makes sure that her folk do not "glamour" any unsuspecting human thus providing them with control over their thoughts and actions and Barrie has the job of keeping the volatile and self-destructive Shifters from harming themselves or humans who they come in contact with.
This is the story out of the three in the LA Keeper series that allows the reader to experience the glamourous side of Hollywood to a certain extent along with Barrie, it also delves into the seedy underbelly that is the "Hollywood machine" where the bottom line is more important than the actors whose lives are changed forevermore by their brush with fame and fortune and all the seductive power that comes with both.
Barrie finds herself in way over her head when she realizes that the answers to her questions are tied up in events that happened 15 years previously and the repercussions to finding those answers she is looking for may just come at a higher price than she is willing to pay. The shadowy presence who is behind all the deaths is one that no one would ever expect and yet is the very one whose power gives them the ability to get close to the victims who do not realize their danger until it is too late.
The pace of events is fast, the romance between Barrie and Mick combustible from the beginning and the final confrontation scenes will have you biting your nails sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the winner of the conflict to emerge. For me this one was a book that had to be read in one sitting; putting it down before finding out who, what, when, where and why was unthinkable!
Of the three LA Keeper books this one captured the elegance, charm, sophistication and dark underbelly of Hollywood for me the best. Barrie has been my favorite Gryffald cousin since her character was introduced and her story had the best emotional investment for me too.

I always find it fascinating how different books in a series can be when they're written by different people. I mean, I read book two not that long ago, and while they feature some of the same characters, the feel was totally different.
Which works, since it's told from a different cousin's perspective.
And just her perspective... which threw me since the last book had the male lead's perspective so I kept flipping pages desperate for some kind of justification for his actions that were clear to me but apparently not clear to our leading lady and for the love of god you're going to have to come clean Mick. Sooner rather than later. Because honest to god by this point in the narrative if you were exposed I would've removed your testicles and turned them into lampshades or something equally absurd.
Which, come to think of it, is probably why the story didn't have his POV. If this shocking revelation was made sooner- or he had the possibility to justify not telling her sooner- I wouldn't have wanted to shake him so badly.
Even once I knew that...
Sorry, just thought of how I'd react again, and I super want to punch Mick right in his kidneys.
Even once I knew that Mick wasn't a POV character, I still found myself frantically flipping pages. And yes, okay, that was partially for the impending emotional fall out, but even after that I was fully hooked to see where things headed. Plus I really want to shank Mick with a shiv I filed down from an old tooth brush.
I feel the need to point out that, all talk of physical harm aside, I actually liked Mick. He and Barry are good together. They make sense. I just think he made a REALLY bad call in his continuing lack of honesty with his lady love... and while I can certainly understand why, I'm going to have to say that I would not have been nearly as generous as Barry was.
It should be fairly obvious by this point in my review that I was emotionally invested in the characters. I mean, I am not normally this prone to violence (shut up Phin, no one asked you) and usually if a character in a book drives me to this point, it's because I can't stand them. As I said before though, I did genuinely like Mick. And Barry. And her cousins and their significant others and the new characters we were introduced to and the plot...
I just can't help myself when it comes to wanting to cut Mick...
3.5 stars. Two good books in the series, but in different and unique ways. Now I'm going to have to go back and read the other keepers books, because more books on my to-read list was just what I needed.
Which I'm considering as another reason to slap Mick.

Keeper of the Shadows is the third book on a series focused on three cousins that have inherited from their respective fathers the role of keepers of the supernatural creatures that live incognito in our society. This time, the protagonist is Barrie Gryffald, the Canyon shapeshifter keeper, and the last cousin to have her story told. Besides being a keeper, Barrie is also a journalist and she unites both activities in the investigation of the death of a Hollywood tycoon and a young male shapeshifter prostitute. At first sight, nothing seems to connect both deaths, but as Barrie investigates deeper, the more the two deaths seem to be related to an old cult movie surrounded in superstition and mystery.
And as if that wasn't enough, Barrie still has to deal with Mick Townsend, her new coworker, to whom she feels dangerously attracted to, and who seems to have too many secrets of his own and not be exactly what he appears... Just like Barrie, I was constantly trying to figure out his true intentions (even though I realized, way before Barrie, his true identity...) and if she could really trust him or not.
It's always a pleasure to return to the Canyon keeper's universe. I still adore the relationship between the three cousins and I enjoyed seeing Rhiannon and Brodie, and Sailor and Declan again. I also really liked the dynamics between Barrie and Mick. The villain was not that hard to identify, but it was nice to realize that, even though each book is written by a different author, there is a continuity in all three books and whose conclusion is reached in this book.
Even though all the cousins have already had their story told, there is still a fourth book, Keeper of the Dawn, centered in Alessande Salisbrooke, an elf keeper that has previously appeared in the other books and that I'm surely going to read. And since the series doesn't just stick with the keeper cousins, I'd love it if one of the characters that appears in this book, and that is left with no closure (I can't reveal who it is because it would be a spoiler), would also get a happy ending. Maybe with a keeper we still don't know?
This is one series that I can honestly say got better with each installment. Each book, starting with the Prequel (The Gatekeeper) got more intense, more cohesive and the characters gained more depth. I started out reading it just to find out where the story was going. By the time I got to Keeper of the Shadows I not only wanted to know more, I was so invested in the characters I need to know more.
I’ve liked Barrie from the beginning. She always seemed to be the most grounded of the cousins. Not that they other Gryffald girls weren’t serious about their position as Keepers, but Barrie seemed to adjust to the responsibility thrown on them a lot more comfortably than Rhiannon and Sailor. She was also the more serious of the trio. Getting to know a different side of her in Keeper of the Shadows.
Then there was Mick… who just about broke my heart. I really don’t want to say too much because there were so many crazy twists and turns in Keeper of the Shadows that I’m afraid I’ll let something slip. Once I thought I had things figured out, Sokoloff took things in a whole new direction. I think it’s safe to say that nothing and no one was exactly what they seemed…. right up until the last chapter. I love it when authors take things up a notch and that’s exactly what this author did. The Keepers: LA may have started slow, but it ended with a definite bang.
One thing that was consistent throughout this series was the obvious love and devotion that the Gryffald girls had for each other. As each girl found their significant other, the level of support increased to include the new men in their lives as well. The sense of family was a really big reason why I enjoyed this series and it seemed even stronger in Keeper of the Shadows.
As the series progressed the city of LA became an even bigger part of the story. It was especially true for Keeper of the Shadows and it won’t take long to figure out why once you start reading. This series took a little bit of patience in the beginning, but I am so glad that I stuck with it.
The Keepers: LA series is a terrific collaboration between authors Heather Graham, Harley Jane Kozak and Alexandra Sokoloff. Each author takes a turn writing about the Gryffald cousins, Rhiannon, Sailor, and Barrie as they settle into their new duties as Keepers of various Others in LA.
Barrie uses her job as a crime beat reporter to keep an eye out for anything that might reveal the existence of the Otherworld. When a young shifter is found dead, she quickly realizes that there's more to his death than a tragic overdose. The more she digs, the more convinced she becomes that the death has something to do with a movie, Otherworld, and the tragedies that followed the movie fifteen years ago. Fellow journalist, Mick Townsend, agrees with Barrie's theory and suggests they team up to solve the case...only Mick seems to know more about the events, past and present, than he should.
Keeper of the Shadows is fast paced page turner that keeps you guessing with all the twists and turns that it takes over the course of the book. I guessed correctly on how some of those twists would turn out, but others threw me for a loop...including who the ultimate identity of the killer was...I did not see that one coming! The chemistry between Barrie and Mick is hot but with Mick's secrets you just never know what's going to happen next in their relationship.
I've enjoyed all of The Keepers: LA series, but Keeper of the Shadows is my favorite of the series to date and finishes the Gryffald cousins story. However, there is one more book in the series, Keeper of the Dawn by Heather Graham that comes out July 1, 2013 and is the story of Keeper Alessande Salisbrooke. I can't wait!
I received an e-copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Keeper of the Shadows is my 1st Nocturne book, as well as my first win on Goodreads. Read it in 24 hours. Yep, it was that fun. Even with it being the 3rd in L.A. Keepers series, I had no trouble following the story.
Barrie is a journalist, but more importantly a Keeper. She helps keep the peace and the secrets of the Others; those who are vampire, shapeshifter, or elven, among other things. Herein lies the one confusion I had that may have been answered in the previous two stories: How does she do her job exactly? I like the idea that the Keepers have only a shadow of the power that the true Others have, but how do they keep from being offed by the first Other they oppose?
Now, this is a romance genre story, and that is certainly in there, but it reads more like a suspenseful mystery. The focus is on solving the mysterious murder of a movie mogul and a street urchin. You're kept guessing right up to the very end, and I imagine many will find some surprising twists along the way.
Our lead guy, Mick, starts out as a competing journalist. He's another mystery to solve. I mean, it's enough to make you put your book down and ponder...
(clears throat-refocuses) I enjoyed the way the characters from the other books were involved just enough to interest me in their stories, but not so much that I felt I missed something. Also, there's good setup for a long-running epic-scale storyline if the series decides to go that route. A well-done balancing act.
Overall, it was a dark Hollywood roller coaster ride where you're never sure whether to keep your eyes on the track or the hottie that sits beside you for the entire ride.
Rosalind Barrymore “Barrie” Gryffald is a Keeper that works at the Courier in Los Angeles. She works on stories that deal with Other world deaths trying to help keep the Other world a secret from the humans that she works with.
After the death of Saul Mayo, Barrie finds out there is a death of a young shifter named Tiger, who she has been trying to help get off the streets. Barrie realizes that the death of Saul and Tiger is somehow related but she’s not the only one.
Mick Townsend is an attractive upcoming human journalist at the Courier also, and seems to be everywhere Barrie is or even knows more about how these two murders may be related.
Barrie tries to resist her attraction to Mick or even working with him on this case the best she can. But she can’t deny there is something there and sooner or later figures out that it can’t be avoided. But the bad thing is as Barrie and Mick continue to investigate the murder of Tiger, Barrie finds herself getting into more trouble and realizes that they have possibly found the killer.
There are so many twists and turns in this book it isn’t funny. But I loved it. Through this whole book I tried to figure out what had to a few minor characters in the book.
I found this series a little late having missed the first book but I have been rather impressed by how each book stands so nicely on its own. It was great checking back in with Sailor and Declan, the stars of the second book, yet I wouldn't have felt the lack of not reading their book in the least.
I just loved Barrie and I really wish that I had her sense of fashion. She is spunky and never gives up though she would probably stay out of trouble if she listened more to the people around her. Mick is a great leading man even though I figured out his mystery rather early in the book. He tries to protect Barrie but he is another that she just won't listen too.
I found KEEPER OF THE SHADOWS a great book to read while enjoying a glass of iced tea on my patio. Just a hint of tension in places to keep it interesting and a surprise at the end as to who the villain really is. I do recommend this book to my readers who enjoy paranormal romance. I think that the book was really aiming to be a romantic suspense but I just didn't feel enough tension to put it in that category. I rate this book a 3.6.
*** I received this book at no charge from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed within are my own.
I found the third book of The Keepers: L.A. series to be an exciting and intriguing read. It was a faced paced story full of mystery and romance.
Mick, the hero of the book was mysterious, with secrets being revealed throughout the book about him and his past. The heroine, Barrie, took her job seriously, and was a character that was easily related too. There was plenty of romance between the Keeper and hero which evolved throughout the book with lots of hot & steamy looks between them. The romance and sex scenes were tastefully done and blended seamlessly into the mystery of the book.
The “Who Done It” plot of this book keeps you very involved in the story with it all its twists and turns. The investigation of the crime was fast paced and believable with plenty of clues that will keep you guessing to the surprising conclusion.
The author blended the paranormal into this glittering and exciting town very well and doesn’t let the sensational L.A. overwhelm the story.
Once you start reading this book, you will not want to put it down until you have learned every juicy fact and solved the mystery.
I received this book for free from GoodReads First Reads. This romance follows Barrie who is a crime journalist. But she is also the Keeper of Shapeshifters in LA - she investigates crimes against them, punishes them if they've committed a crime, and keeps the mortals from finding out about them. A new case pops up with the death of Tiger - a young shapeshifter who worked as a prostitute that she had taken to a shelter a few days beforehand. His death seems to be connected to that of a mortal who was a big time Hollywood mogul. And she will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of it.
She also reluctantly teams up with fellow journalist Mick Townsend who she has undeniable chemistry with to solve the case. But with all the secrets he keeps can Barrie trust him?
I highly recommend this book. The plot is quite compelling and the sex scenes are pretty steamy. Anyone who enjoys novels about the supernatural or just want a good romance book should read this.
Another really good book for the keepers of Los Angeles, the three cousins are really grown on me and even this last book was as good as the second. In this book we have the shifters keeper and a ver very good and long forgotten shifters, a strange, very strange actor that is a vampire ad a cursed movie. The plot is intriguing and the characters also, could I ask for more as a reader?
THANKS TO NETGALLEY AND HARLEQUIN FOR THE PREVIEW!
One thing I really like about reading a series that has a different author for each book is seeing how each one tells the story because for the most part the plot line of each book is the same but depending on how the story is told we love it, hate it or are somewhat indifferent.
I really liked Barrie I found her to be pretty straight forward and grounded and in general I liked this book much more than the first one. I did find the story to be pretty predictable, while initially I did not know "who done it", figuring out who one of the characters really was happened pretty early on. Mick was okay, he did grow on me but thought Barrie should have kicked his ass a couple of times.
Just finished this installment to The Keepers: L.A. I loved this story. Shifter Keeper Barrie Gryffald has fallen upon the story of a lifetime. Being a journalist, she has discovered that the death of Saul Mayo may be directly related to teen actor Johnny Love. Barrie's problem is keeping Mick Townsend, a cowoker, from discovering the story before she can get all her facts in order to break the story. Mick Townsend, AKA Robbie Anderson, has been in hiding for 15 years. Mick is a shifter. He is so good at it that Barrie doesn't even know that he is a shifter. Robbie is back in town to find the person who murdered his best friend, Johnny Love. There are many twists and turns in this story. There are many surprises. I definitely recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have not read any of the other books in this series, but it didn't seem to hinder my enjoyment of this installment.
This book is more a crime/mystery than a paranormal romance. Barrie is a very sympathetic Keeper and reporter. Mick is a man with about a million secrets and mysteriously seductive good looks. The mystery in this case was relatively easy to solve, but it still kept the pages turning.
The love story was hot and filled with paranormal goodness. I wish there was more romance than mystery, but the book was a good change of pace for me. It made me interested in checking out the rest of the series.
Well, I think I liked this book best out of the series. The story was interesting and kept me guessing until the end. Every time I thought I knew who the killer was it turned out not to be them and then I'd try to guess a new person only to be wrong again. I actually never guessed who the killer was so that was a huge surprise when they were revealed. I also liked that for once people actually helped Barrie out and didn't talk down to her because she was a new Keeper, which in previous books that's all people did. Barrie and Mick worked well together and turned into a pretty good couple.
I love this series! This is the first time I've ever read any of Alexandra Sokoloff's books and I was a Fan just a few pages in. I cant wait to read her other books, right after I Finish Heather Grahams The Keeper of the Dawn.
One of the best genre romances I've read in ages. She's a brilliant writer. Yes, I did guess who Mick was rather early on, but, the plot twists were so bizarre that they kept me intrigued right to the end. Fantastic. And the romance was hot, too.
Miniseries: The Keepers: L.A. Category: Paranormal Romance "Sokoloff offers a novel story idea and a fast-paced plot, propelled by her heroic, likable leads." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 stars
A fun read by Alexandra Sokoloff, set amidst the movie industry in LA. I loved the characters, the story, the "other" worldliness of it. Very well done. Can't wait for the next book!
