When she opens her door to a wounded, handcuffed stranger, Laney Jefferson is terrified…until she recognizes her unexpected visitor. Thirteen years ago, Logan Randal was there for her when she desperately needed a friend. Now the wrongfully convicted lawman needs the widow's help. On the run from the law and guided only by Laney's unswerving faith in Logan's innocence, their mutual attraction begins to break down the barriers around Laney's heart. But the real culprit is much closer than they imagine…a cunning enemy determined to keep the past—and the truth—buried forever.
Fugitive was very good. I really enjoyed the wrongfully accused aspect in the story and how the hero had to hide to avoid capture. I was a little frustrated with how obvious other parts of the book were, but I was able to get past that.
The romance was sweet. I loved how they knew each other previously and this was their second chance at love. The ending was good.
All in all, Fugitive was an enjoyable read and I'm glad I read it.

Laney never expected that after 13 years, the first time she would see Logan again, would be with him wounded, handcuffed and asking for help.
Logan was convicted by a crime he didn't commit and when he was going to jail, someone tried to kill him and the guards, where he nearly didn't escape. Now, while running from the police and the people who wants him dead, he must try to prove his innocence.
Sometimes, the worse things we've ever lived through make us the best people we could ever hope to be.
Laney had a terrible childhood, with abusive parents that for the whole society, seemed to be the perfect citizens and people. Such an example that they would take foster kids into their care just for appearances sake. And well, Logan was one of them. But instead of running away, he stayed because of Laney and helped her escape her life.
Through the story we could see how connected this 2 are, how even after 13 years they still cared deeply for each other. And it was a point that i enjoyed in the story (also all the "fugitive scenes" that kept reminding me of the Harrison Ford movie...i'm weird, i know).
I thought it was clever who the culprit really was and how and well I do hate her parents!!!
Laney Jefferson opens her snow-covered cabin to find a nearly frozen man in a prison suit and hand cuff. Over a decade ago the man before her, Logan Randal, saved her from her abusive parents and helped her start a new life.
Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, Laney must decide how far she is willing to go to help Logan. Ruthlessly pursued by an unknown enemy with what seems to be a very personal vendetta out against Logan, they must use their wits and all their resources just to survive.
Fugitive is a Christian based romantic, mystery with a healthly dose of suspense. Through it all, the characters search for God’s purpose in their circumstances. A good, wholesome adventure and a very enjoyable read, Fugitive makes you believe in second chances.
This ARC copy of Fugitive was given to me by Harlequin Love Inspired in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love Shirlee McCoy's books! She is a master at suspense and super characters. Her heroes are tremendously great. I only discovered her earlier this year and now I'm trying to play catch up by reading all her books. It's going to take me a while, though, because she has over 50! Lucky me. I highly recommend her work. It's great.
Fugitive by Shirlee McCoy, Opens with Deputy Sheriff Logan Randal a prisoner on the run from killers. He is being transported from court to prison when the vehicle that he was being transferred in came under fire, killing one officer and seriously injuring another. He must make it to safety and fast, before he is shot or freezes to death. He makes it to a cabin and comes face to face with none other than Laney Jefferson.
Laney Jefferson came from an abusive home. Saved by her foster brother Logan Randal, who helped her escape thirteen years ago. She left Green Bluff and never looked back. Helped by a loving couple she graduates college and makes a living as an interior designer. But not everything has worked out the way she had hoped. She has traveled to the mountains to prepare the cabin she shared with her late husband so she can sell it.
Things have not been easy for Logan. He struggled as a young adult, but decided to change. He helped Laney escape abuse. He was also instrumental in putting her parents behind bars. He later became a Police Officer and then a Deputy Sheriff. But he is still feeling guilty for not being able to save his wife. Now framed and convicted for trafficking drugs he is being sent to prison, when he is attacked.
I fell in love with both of these characters. While Logan is in need of help, he does not want Laney to be at risk of being arrested by police, or killed by the people after him. Laney on the other hand can't forget the boy, who is now a man, that saved her all those years ago. And she is willing to do anything, even break the law to save him. While both loved and lost, the author does a good job of weaving young love and attraction between these two.
This was my first book by Shirlee McCoy and I have to say I really loved it. Anyone looking for heated passionate sex will be disappointed. But if you are looking for a running for your life, standing by your side no matter what - friendship, a really good story of love with a HEA ending then this book is for you.
I received an ARC " Advanced Readers Copy " of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly, I tend to avoid Christian romance books because they usually come off preachy to me, but this one was actually enjoyable. It was the first one I've read from the 'Suspense' line of books. It might not be my last, either. Was it predictable? Yes. Was it cliche? A little bit. Nonetheless, I thought the author played well on the chemistry between the characters (nothing better for that than a shared history), and it was more realistic than I was expecting.
I feel there could've been more done with the actual crime of the story. There was a lot of running around, trying to avoid the police, and less development of the how and why of the antagonists' actions. I mean, who attacked Logan at the beginning of the story? Who burned down William's cabin? We only meet one crone the entire book - Danvers - who confessed Way too easily (but, I know, I know - it's LoveInspired, so you can't be torturing the guy - though let's face it, that's more realistic if you want someone like that to talk)...
But the main focus (I'm assuming) was the romance part of it - at least, that's how it came off; and for its part, it was well-written. Thanks, Shirlee, for an enjoyable read that I could hardly put down once I started.
Laney Jefferson did not have an ideal childhood. Her parents were abusive and vindictive. The only shining light she can remember is her friend, Logan Randal. Logan helped her to escape from the abuse when she turned eighteen and she's never looked back. Fast-forward thirteen years and Laney is a widow trying to rebuild her life. Her father had been tried for abuse, neglect and the murder of a foster-child. Her mother was found guilty of abuse and neglect and spent a few years in prison. Now her father is deceased and her mother has been released from prison and disappeared. In an effort to address the past, Laney has decided to sell her husband's rural cabin and her childhood home. Laney is forced to deal with more than she thought when she confronts her childhood savior, Logan Randal. Logan is an escaped convict and only wants to clear his name before it is too late. He's happy to see Laney after all these years, but he doesn't want to pull her into his messy life. Can Laney learn to trust her feelings after all these years or will her fear prevent her from finding happiness?
Fugitive is a fast-paced faith-based romantic suspense read. Both Laney and Logan attempt to rely on their faith as they attempt to unravel the mystery behind Logan's wrongful conviction. The romance aspect of the story is somewhat predictable but it did not detract from the story. My only problem with the story is that although Laney and Logan are nice people, they aren't very well developed and came across as a little flat at times. The most interesting character to me was Stan, Laney's stepfather. There's a lot going on in Fugitive: Laney and Logan's romance, Logan's wrongful conviction and the mystery behind the conviction, as well as the attempts to kill Logan (presumably to silence him). The main themes seem to be faith, trust, and family (those we're born into and those we create). As a faith-based romance, I found Fugitive to be a story that anyone from any faith could enjoy. If you enjoy clean HEA romantic-suspense, then you may want to add Fugitive to your reading list.
Fugitive by Shirlee McCoy is a quick, well-paced tale about second chances and putting your trust in Faith and your own heart.
Laney Jefferson ran from her abusive past over a dozen years ago with the help of Logan Randal, a childhood friend and savior. Finally having a chance to make a life for herself, she never looks back until she is told she is the heir to her family’s estate, forcing her to swallow her fear and return to sever all ties to the painful memories. While staying at her small and isolated cabin during a fierce snowstorm, hearing a thump at her door, she opens it to find her past coming roaring back when a wounded man, handcuffed and half frozen falls in and she recognizes him. Logan Randal was there for her when she desperately needed a friend. Now the wrongfully convicted lawman needs the widow's help as he runs from an unknown entity out to stop him from proving not only his innocence, but uncovering the truth that lays buried in the past. Will they survive long enough to find the real killer?
Fugitive is a Christian based mystery full of suspense and a romantic touch that proves that life often gives us just what we need at the time we need it, including a second chance at happiness. Shirlee McCoy has packed an action-filled plot into a quick and satisfying read without resorting to gratuitous scenes, but relying on a faith in God in this wonderful suspense.

Logan Randal has been on the police force for many years. Now he is heading to prison after being convicted of a felony that he did not do. While being transported to prison during a blizzard, the vehicle he is in has an accident. One of the police officers is killed and the other is seriously wounded. Logan heads to the mountain to try to escape the person who he knows is trying to kill him. What he finds on the mountain is his best friend from his teen years, Laney Jefferson.
Book #8 Fugitive in the series HEROES FOR HIRE by: Shirlee McCoy will have your heart pounding in the way you that you can't put the book down. You start with a car crash then you have bad guys trying to killer a prisoner who ( by the way ) is a a Ex Deputy Sheriff that was set up on drug charges and now he and a child hood friend are on the run trying to find out the truth of why he's been set up. As the book goes on you will be rutting for the Good Guys.
Shirlee McCoy is such a gifted storyteller. Not only is her story plot always solid and entertaining, her characters’ feelings are so real and familiar. Best of all, she gives God the credit for leading them to their happily ever after ending. Thank you, Ms. McCoy for another very entertaining and satisfying afternoon.
This book is part of Love Inspired Suspense Series. If I must say I didn't find so much of suspense. Laney Jefferson is a young widow, she's just received her father's heritage, an ancient mansion with its lands, to the limits of the town where She spent her childhood and the place from which she run from her adolescence. The woman decides to put order in her life, check out the house and then sell it and start a new life. During a snowstorm, while she is spending the weekend in an isolated cabin owned by the deceased husband, a man shows up at her door, he 's a police's fugitive, still wearing handcuffs and prison uniforms. At first she is terrified, but watching him better she realizes that the man is not a stranger, but he's Logan Randal, the same boy, adopted by her family, who helped her escape from her terrible reality. The man proclaims himself innocent: someone has hatched a plot against him and he even tried to kill him. Laney believes him and she gets involved by events, and by feelings that she discovers to feel for this man who comes from her past, while together they try to find the truth for exonerating evidence. The book is o good reading, but I think that to fit in the category of suspense it had to develop with a more complex plot. Instead it is focused more on the events of the past of the two characters, in order to understand the reasons for the deep bond that unites them, even after so many years and during this path, where they realize their true feelings for each other, during the investigation to find out who wants to ruin the Logan's life. In this adventure they are aided by other people convinced of the innocence of the man and who are hired to protect him from his enemy. Among the secondary characters I enjoyed Stan, the stepfather of Laney, who joins the group, a former senior policeman who wants to help them. At the same time Stan left me a little puzzled, before he is tricked by the lies of Laney's mother, Mildred, then he discovered the truth and he stays with her, and then decide to escape and collaborate with a group of people that he has never seen in his life ... A bit strange. I thought then that everything could be reconnect to the deep Christian imprint that the characters have in this book.: their jjustification of fate according to God's will, the way to deal with guilt and keep their faith despite adversity. However, compared to what I expected from the synopsis, I am a little disappointed by the book. Thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin for the preview
I love this series. Meeting the same characters, developing more plot, like meeting new friends. Getting into the great plot seeing how God is working on lives, focused on what He is doing.
Oh my word that is so heartfelt and thank goodness that they got there happy ever after that much love got them there chance for there own family just lovely thank you Shirlee McCoy Ian moving on to book 9
This was my first book by this author and it definitely won't be my last! I absolutely ate it up from beginning to end and the end was a definite shock!! So so good!!!
Oh my goodness, I loved this book. Fugitive is the 8th book in the Heroes for Hire series by Shirlee McCoy. Now, I've not read any of the books from the first 7, so I can't say how this book was in comparison to the others, but I can say it was amazing as a stand alone read.
Laney Jefferson escaped her abusive parents and moved on with her life thanks to her childhood friend Logan Randal. There friendship was based on misery, abuse and the need to leave that life behind. And that's exactly what she did. She got away, married a sweet, older man and never looked back - not even to check up on her old friend. Cancer took her husband and her father died in prison and now she's back in the town that it all started. She's just getting the house cleaned out and put on the market, then she can go back to her life far, far away from the horrible place that haunts her nightmares.
Sometimes the worse things we've ever lived through make us the best people we could ever hope to be.
Logan may have helped Laney escape, but he didn't give himself the same luxury. He didn't blame the town for the tortures heaped on him when he was a child. He knew who was to blame and had no problem holding that person responsible. He became a well respected sheriff and was the reason that Laney's father was convicted for his crimes. Now, his whole life has been flipped upside down and he's running out of options quick. Convicted of a crime that he didn't commit he found himself being transported to prison with little hope of declaring his innocence. Things just got worse - his transport was forced into an accident, the deputy transporting him was shot and he's on the run. What are the chances that he would happen upon Laney and she would be the help that he needed.
Nothing happens by chance. I was put in your life for a reason. This is it.
I am not always a huge fan of romantic suspense, but this book was great! The characters were well developed and even had some fun banter between all the suspense and drama. The book was labeled romantic suspense, but was pretty light on the physical romance. Honestly, I think it could fall into a christian romance genre, too. There was mention of scripture in a few places and the characters often spoke of their faith. Logan and Laney slowly felt their way around a new attraction. It was sweet and done well. I highly recommend this book!
I would like to thank NetGalley.com for the loan of this book in exchange for my honest review.
It's a mystery, a thriller, a sweet love story with a fast-paced plot, and it comes wrapped in a Christian perspective. Fugitive is the story of Logan Randal, whose childhood represents two strikes against his making anything positive of himself. He beats those odds and worked his way up to Deputy Sheriff in his hometown of Green Bluff.
However when we meet him as the story begins, he is hiking quickly away from a car wreck, leaving behind two officers, one dead and one barely alive. It is snowing, he is handcuffed, and knows he must escape or be killed. He believes the wreck was caused by the same unknown folks who framed him, successfully prosecuted him and for some reason, apparently would prefer that he be dead rather than in prison.
Knowing that the killer(s) will be on his trail, he stumbles miles through the woods, eventually spotting a cabin. When Laney Jefferson opens to his knock, her fear turns to recognition when she recognizes her foster brother whom she has not seen or heard from for years. He is stirred when he sees her, but does not want to involve her in his situation. She wants to believe in his innocence, but whether or not she is convinced of it, she feels she must return the strong support and protection that he offered her so many years ago. She had come from Seattle to her late husband's cabin for the first time since his death and her plan had been to travel on to Green Bluff to prepare her family home so that it can be sold. Though she has been long estranged from her parents, her dad has recently passed away, leaving her the family home and surrounding property.
Those plans change as she becomes more and more committed to helping Logan prove his innocence, and Logan comes to realize that he must have help of some loyal friends to have a shot at proving his innocence. Help comes from surprising places and his enemies are not who he had thought they would be either. Laney and Logan each have built walls around their hearts, but the close proximity begins to break those walls down. There is some violence, a car chase or two, and a very sweet ending.
My copy is an ebook courtesy of Netgalley, and I recommend it to both romance and mystery readers. It's a quick read with lots of action, romantic tension, and a satisfying ending, in my humble opinion!
Book source ~ Many thanks to NetGalley and Love Inspired for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
Laney Jefferson is back near her hometown to clean out her husband’s cabin in preparation for selling it. Then she’ll move on to her parents home to do the same thing. She’s given herself two weeks to clear out the past and move on into her future. But in the middle of a snowstorm, there’s a bang at the cabin door and her future takes a turn she never saw coming.
Logan Randall is escaping the wrecked squad car, running for his life in the middle of a snowstorm dressed only in his prison jumpsuit. Handcuffed and trying to evade his would-be murderers he heads up the mountain hoping to find shelter before he freezes to death. Or is fatally shot. When he comes across a cabin he has no idea he will be looking into a face from his past. He does know that just being around Laney puts her in danger and that’s not something he is willing to do. Unfortunately, like the song says, you don’t always get what you want.
There’s something about a cabin in the woods in the middle of a snowstorm, a man on the run and a woman willing to help him that I love every single time. It’s one of my favorite plots, so when I saw this story I had to read it even though it’s the 8th(!) in a series. Unheard of for me to jump into a series without reading them all first, but, Hello! Favorite! Favorites are hard to resist. Even though they don’t stay at the cabin as I imagined, the story held my attention until the end.
Logan was framed, sentenced and was on his way to prison when the story starts and it’s a race to the end to see who framed him and wants him dead. Laney gets pulled into the mayhem and then there are great secondary characters that come along for the ride. All-in-all a wonderful romantic suspense that can be read in an afternoon.
