Something Darker

Rate this book
The one thing Syrus Alcot, the God of Death Osiris in the Egyptian Pantheon, wants in all the worlds is the woman he loved and lost returned to him. When he gave up his powers, and freedom for a life of service he was promised her return. That was over one thousand years ago. A member of a team of dark gods charged with keeping humanity safe, he leads a loveless existence in New York City, searching for the one thing that could bring his wife back to him, a lapis scarab that was lost to him ages before.

Gwen Stapleton, a mild mannered librarian, is unaware that she holds the key to not only Syrus’ happiness, but her own. Seemingly stuck in a hopeless relationship with a man she doesn’t love, she has no idea that a chance meeting in Alphabet City will start a landslide to her heart’s content. Because Gwen is the keeper of the scarab, and is everything Syrus has ever wanted… and hes not the only one.

An Ancient evil is waking, and its servants will stop at nothing to see it seize its rightful place as the new pantheon of earth. And in order for Syrus and his team to save the world, Gwen is going to have to accept him, and show that love does make all the difference.

I really liked this book. It has a fast-paced plot and lots of steamy sex. I love the twists of the gods-turned-men and having to find their Keeper in order to regain their full powers back. There is deffinitely no shortage of hot men and I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

This was a total flop for me. I didn’t think to check the publication date before I bought it (it was published in 2012). Otherwise I would have passed on it. I know, from experience, that paranormal romances 10+ old or older are not a good match for me and Something Darker is a stellar example of why.

The norms, standards, and expectations of the romance genres have changed in the past decade. So, I am trying very hard to keep that in mind when writing this review. But there is just no way around how very much I did not enjoy this book, even if it’s style and content were the norm 10 years ago.

As I age, I am becoming less and less tolerant of women being treated as objects and walking sex dolls in my PNR. I cringe and sneer my way through scenes of faceless women panting to give head to men as they treat them like shit. Or sitting through scene after scene after scene of rape threats, or women being given to the henchmen to be gang raped. Or villains having rough sex with women they are actively disparaging, while she is shown to be getting off despite the abuse. Or the ‘heros’ (the ostensibly good guys) talking about all the pieces of ass, or flavor of the night, or treats, or presents, or other diminishing titles when talking about the nameless and unimportant women they are going to fuck and toss aside throughout the book, etc, etc, etc.

Generally, the heroine is the only woman shown to be worthy of respect. In fact, you can often tell that she’s the hero’s ‘One,’ because she’s the exception to the women are worthless objects (read garbage) rule and the only one seen or shown as truly human in the whole book.

And so, so, so, so, so much of Something Darker is all of the above. And I just slowly lost my will to continue. In fact, I skimmed the last several chapters just to get it finished.

Add to all of that, that the book really needed another round of edits and everything and everyone was underdeveloped and I was just ready to toss the book on the DNF pile. I finished it, but just barely and not happily. I will not be continuing the series.

I bought this book and its sequel at a comic con a few years ago. At the con, one of the authors really sold me on the plot idea of this series, over her others, when it comes to my preferences. I read almost every genre, but paranormal romance is my favorite genre to cuddle up with, especially with a glass of wine following a long day at work. So, needless to say, I was excited to read this. I have read self published and/or small local authors before, so I know these works are not always of the same quality as books produced through big publishers, but many times I have been pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, that was not the case with this book.

My biggest issue with this book is the unbelievable amount of grammar/spelling/formatting errors. I have never seen such negligence in a "finished" book before, and I have trouble understanding why someone who considers his or herself an author would present this as a finished product. The errors weren't just little issues that are easily overlooked either; I'm talking about misuse of your/you're, places where it was obvious they accidentally hit "enter" instead of a "space", and even forgetting to capitalize the beginning of a sentence. It got to the point where I was temped to get my red pen and make corrections as I read.

Aside from the unprofessional presentation, there were several other issues that resulted in a one-star rating. Firstly, the dialog and character development was not believable to me. It is hard to pinpoint what exactly was wrong with the characters, but the best way to describe it is they all sounded so young. The way the immortal gods spoke, reminded me more of frat boys rather than rulers of earth thousands of years old. Everyone in the book just seems so blatantly immature, but we are supposed to believe that the men are immortal and the women are young professionals (late 20's/early 30's). Also, none of the characters had a distinctive voice. I have read many books, in the same genre, where you could remove names, and I could still tell you exactly which character was "speaking". That could never happen here.

Second, anyone can tell you flat out what is happening, but a truly talented author uses words to paint a picture. I don't want to be told what how a character feels, I want to close my eyes and see it. There were hardly any descriptions, back story, etc. For instance, when Syrus was captured, Caine used a "tool of power". At no point leading up to this had any such tool been mentioned. It was as if the authors threw random things into the story to achieve their ends without doing any set-up.

Lastly, there were sooooo many character names (plus, the gods have more than one name), but with everyone talking the same, and random things happening with no set-up, it was very confusing, despite the fact that the entire book only took a few hours to read.

I bought the second book and will read it because I can't bring myself to waste something I paid for. I am hoping that the three years in between books brings along some improvements in the writing.

ARR-I received this book in exchange for a review

I want to start off by asking can someone please pretty please get me my very own Syrus for Christmas!!! I promise to be a good girl until I get him LOL.
With that being said here is my review: It took me a little while to get into the story because I kept wondering what was I reading,by the time I got to the second chapter I was ready to call myself a fan forever(which I am) this was so good and when the romance starts to heat up let me tell you it heats up!

This book has everything you want and things you didn't know you wanted in a paranormal romance, it has action, suspense, hot sexyness lol IT HAS MORE THAN ONE HOT GUY which means more to come

I am a fan and can not wait for the next installment. Very good read I loved it!!!!

I really wanted to like this book because I found its premise intriguing.

I did not even get through 20% of it, though.

Once the story introduced the female protagonist, Gwen, I had trouble continuing. Still, I gave it a chapter or so just in case I warmed up to it.

I didn't.

When we meet her, Gwen is in a nonsensically abusive relationship. The boyfriend is every bad stereotype manifested into one drunken, lecherous person. This guy and the relationship are both presented in an over-the-top, unrealistic way. It felt clunky and undeveloped.

Even more, Gwen's thought process about said boyfriend is completely unrealistic. She mentions she's been in this live-in relationship for some time and keeps telling her self outright "no other guy will ever love me so I might as well stay with him." People do sometimes stay in relationships for those kinds of reasons, but usually they don't say it to themselves over and over and over again.

Cue the hot Egyptian god who instantly falls head over heels with his pre-destined mate, thereby making the Mary Sue protagonist interesting as he spoon feeds her a dose of self-esteem.

Well, that's what usually happens in stories like this. Instead, this process is momentarily delayed because the moment the abusive boyfriend gets ripped apart by demons or something, Gwen makes a split-second decision that she's awesome and deserves better.

Now, I'm all for gaining self esteem and kicking assholes to the curb, but presenting abusive relationships and recovery from abusive relationships in this way not only makes for an eye-roll experience. It's also outright dangerous.

Yes, this is fiction. Yes, readers suspend disbelief and all that. But when we see these tropes played out so heavily, it normalizes them and can affect people's perceptions of their own experiences. Readers can internalize that abuse looks like that over-the-top series of events between Gwen and Asshat and then the kinds of relationship abuse people typically experience doesn't seem to qualify as abuse.

Even more, the long and drawn out process of putting yourself back together after living with harrowing abuse becomes belittled by this "instant self-esteem" trope or the "the hot guy teaches me to love myself" trope.

I found the book poorly written and, in some respects, offensive. It's too bad, really. I was looking forward to a new take on the mythology.

What else can I say! S.A. Price has warmed up these cold nights with a stunning group of male gods. Book one in the Inferi Dii series starts off with Syrus, immortal god of Death or also known as the Egyptian God Osiris. They gave up their lives to protect the world, as well as their powers. Each God has a Relic which hold their power and each Relic has a Keeper. This Keeper is the vessel for the stored powers and when a God find his Keeper he shall have his powers back and a partner to spend the rest of eternity with. Their group being called the Inferi Dii. Their enemy, demons called Div are causing a lot of problems. They are the servants of the VeIns and at one time was meant to rule but instead were bound to another dimension. So the war between the VeIn and Inferi Dii has been an ongoing battle but has really picked up lately and the Inferi Dii aren't completely sure why.
If you love Mythology or are new to it this is a fantastic book for you!
Syrus is keeping watch over a seedy neighborhood when he comes up on some Div's following two women that had just left a club. The knight in shining armor that he is does his duties to protect and in turn meets a woman that he feels a deep connection with right off the bat.
Gwen is your run of the mill Librarian that doesn't see herself as beautiful or deserving of a good man. In a relationship she has just settled for even though her best friend tells her she deserves more. While out with her best friend Ansley she has a run in with two men and is saved by a gorgeous man that doesn't take no for an answer when getting home safely. Little does she know that this man, Syrus, finds her very attractive and is willing to do anything to keep her safe.
Gwen is having to redefine herself, find how she fits into the new world she is thrust in and trust people whom she hardly knows.
I had an immediate connection with Gwen and Syrus. How Gwen settles for what she has instead of going after what she wants and how Syrus is lonely and hopes to find the one person he is meant to be with. It really helped me to see great things can happen when you least expect it. I love how the two main characters Syrus and Gwen's relationship grows and that two people that were both in lonely situations find happiness against the odds. I can not wait for book in this series to be available and I highly recommend getting a copy!!

An excellent start to a very original paranormal series that is jam packed full of action, suspense, hotness and soul deep romance. I was pulled into the pages and not let go of until the very end, just how it should be when reading a good engrossing book. This is my very first time reading from this writing duo and it will NOT be my last! A definite must read for those that are fans of the genre and enjoy an original read.

Gwen is a beautiful, strong and simple woman. She works as a librarian during the day and mainly stays home at night. The one time she decides to go out for a night on the town with her best friend, all hell breaks loose! She sees and experiences things one has only read about and meets one of the HOTTEST male specimens, ever! He actually saves her and her friend from a vicious attack. Talk about being at the wrong place and the wrong time, or rather the right place at the right time ;)

Syrus is one amazing man, he’s also known as the God of death (AKA Osiris). He’s one sexual, strong alpha male that also has his very own ‘harem’ of woman to pass his time while awaiting his fated one, the one that holds the Relic, the key to his powers, his happiness and existence. Now all he needs for her to do is accept him and her place by his side.

These two are absolutely perfect for one another. I’d say without a doubt one of my most favorite couples of the year. Actually I loved many of the characters and I look forward to more in this series.

I'm kind of obsessed with Gods/Goddesses stories..especially the dark gods, most of them are hot reads that includes hot, sexy and yummy Gods..and this is definitely one of those.

Something Darker is a fantastic start of the Inferi Dii Series..we get to have Syrus, a sexier than hell god..with equally sexy bunch of gods as friends..how awesome is that? I'm not even upset with him having a harem just before Gwen, if a were given a chance to be part of that harem..I would say..oh god..Yes! please..lol

Gwen, our heroine..at first is a weak with a very low self-confidence woman, who thinks that she deserve and is being grateful for having the good for nothing boyfriend..I'm actually happy when that boyfriend..now ex met an not-so-unfortunate-accident. I loved that we get to witness how Gwen becomes stronger and confident as the story progresses..well, if you have a hottie god by your side won't that make you feel awesomely beautiful too?

Something Darker is an awesome and sexy read, I'm looking forward to reading the other gods story..they are all mysterious and sexy..I want to uncover all of them...*coughs their past and secrets.

I have never read anything by S.A. Price before. When I finally started to read "Something Darker", I never knew I would be pulled into such an alluring tale. Syrus is a HOT Egyptian Dark God that has been around for a millennia. His real title is God of Death Osiris and had been married to the Goddess, Isis. Because of his "needs", he gets to have a harem of priestesses that have been handed down from century to century, from mother to daughter. These Priestesses are the gods actual harems. They are there not only as their body guards but as their bed mates. The gods (there are 6) are all looking for their Keeper, a woman that holds their relic and their hearts. Gwen Stapleton is a shy and mild mannered librarian, just going about life in slow motion, while in a relationship with a man that so does not meet her needs. Once things progress in her life, she meets Syrus and things are never the same again.

I can't wait to read more stories from S.A. Price and the remainder of the Hot Gods and their lovely Keepers. To Be Continued.....I will now go and re-read this book. You never know if I missed an pertinent love scenes.

Hot, Hot men/Gods making sweet, sweet love to their Keepers; over and over and over again!

I really enjoyed Syrus and the other guys; I am looking forward to reading more of these guys as they each find their own keepers and relics. This book was a great start to what I am sure will be a terrific series. It is very well written, with strong characters that are very entertaining. I enjoyed the smoking hot sex scenes but if that isn’t your thing there is so much more to the story that you can get lost in… The story kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and I read it in one shot, straight through to find out how it was going to wrap up. The pacing was great, I was always wondering what was going to happen next, which was nice because with reading as much as I do, there are several books where I can almost predict what was going to happen next… With this book I am dying of curiosity to see what the author is going to have happen next and which character she is going to pick the story up with. The female characters are very intriguing in that they all seem to share a similar profession (ancient history of some sort) and I like the attention to detail that is done with the historical research. I can’t wait for the next installment!!!

This book is full of action, but I must say the best part is the amazingly hot gods!!! The first god that we meet is Syrus or Osiris. He is the god of the dead. You can't help but instantly fall in love with him. He is a lovable gentleman! He quickly becomes a knight in shinning armor to Gwen, the female lead. She is a strong woman who knows what she wants and turns out to be someone that Syrus needs in his life. You also meet five other gods Blaine( a healer), Arlo, Dezi, Kaid and Castor. Each one is equally lovable in their own ways. Also, I must say its hard not to fall in love with the arrogant and sexy as hell Nathan. He is the evil leader of the Div who along with Nebuchadnezzar is trying to dispose of the gods and take over the world.
The authors do an amazing job with world building and character development. You really get a feel for where they are now and all the places they have been in their lives. They give you just enough detail to understand what they have done to save the world once before and what they need to do now to save it.
I highly recommend this book! It is packed full of action, sexy gods, strong women, lust and love. What more could you ask for?

I did not like the heroine Gwen when I first met her but I loved her best friend. Gwen came across as such a push over and I wanted to put my hands over my eyes, to avoid the horror. But boy did she turn it around. She came into her own quickly, as soon as she and Syrus are speeding away, it was so realistic and I understood why her character had to be such a push over in the beginning. Gwen’s personality allowed her to be understanding and accepting of things that might have taken the average person off guard.

The hero was definitely a God, Syrus had an ego but on him it was an endearing quality. I loved his sense of humor and his care free attitude toward the things he did not like, he was exactly what you would expect of a God.

Something Darker made me laugh and I am looking forward to the next book in the series, I was sold when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers were mentioned. I mean anyone who can drop two of my favorite childhood cartoons into the dialogue is a keeper.

I don't know much about mythology but I'm ready to learn more... This book kept me turning the pages and with the exception of a few grammatical and spelling errors was great.

Syrus, formally known as the Egyptian God Osiris husband to Isis has sacrificed his powers and his wife in order to protect the world. With nothing but the promise of eventually being restored to his former greatness and re-united with his love he has spent centuries fighting the Velns and the Div.

After finding his Relic and Keeper Gwen he has to fight to earn Gwen's love and trust. He has to protect her and convince her to be spend eternity with him. Gwen has just come out of an abusive relationship, she doubts her self worth and can't believe she's worthy of having Syrus' undivided love. Add the fact that three of Syrus' priestesses (yes he has priestesses) have been kidnapped and Syrus has his hands full!

I have to say that this book is probably the best Paranormal Romance that I've read in a while. The love story is fairly believable given the circumstances. The characters are well written, with the baddies being disturbing and the goodies having their own flaws which makes them that much more real. I liked the heroine, Gwen, watching her grow from an unconfident, abused woman into the strong leader of a heroine that she was born to be. And the story was interesting with a few twists to keep it moving. Oh, and the sex was hot! I assume that there will be many more books in this series. I will definitely buy them as they come out. The only reason I took off a star is the number of editing errors in the book - typos, missing or misspelled words abound. However, I was able to overlook them for the most part due to it being a good story.

In full disclosure, I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

The Dark Gods of the Underworld are living in New York City fighting evil as only 6 HOT guys can. They are also looking for lost relics, scarabs that will tie them to their Keepers, women who will restore their powers and become their soul mates as they have been lost when they either chose or were cast down to earth. Some of the Gods do not do well on this plane existing for tens of thousands of years and use sex, alcohol, and violence to curb their appetites. This story has our main couple Osiris the God of Death and Gwen the Librarian whom meet while he is saving her from being eaten by a Div. Him being a Hot God and all helps him out and she is coming out of a bad relationship. This book has much to like, from the sweet parts of the romance to the hot sexy parts, there is also plenty of action. The way the relationship develops, to the story and the mythology. I will be awaiting the next in this series!

If you ever wondered how mythological gods would fit into the current time frame of New York, this is a must read book. It’s the beginning of a new series and has a lot of arc planting for the future stories woven into the story of one of the gods and his Keeper.
Osirus and Isis are the foundation for this story, but I can already see where several of the other gods are going to run into trouble finding their relics and Keepers. It should be an interesting series- action packed and steamy, what more could a girl want?
This was a fast paced book that really kept you turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. There were some editing issues, as my English teacher would say, “Easy fixes,” and this would be a perfect read.

I am glad that this is the first book of the paranormal series the "Inferi Dii", because I definitley want to read more of them. It is very well written, with strong characters, a lot of action and smoking hot sex scenes.

He is an Egyptian Dark God and his real title is God of Death Osiris. Gwen Stapleton is a very shy librarian. She is in a relationship with a man that treats her bad and does not meet her needs. OMG what can I say about this book but I loved it. From the very first page I was hooked. A chance encounter in Alphabet city would forever change Gwens life. Along comes a god to save her in the name of Syrus. and from there on the adventure starts. Gwen watches her drunk ex get eaten by the bad guys. Finds out she is destined to be with syrus . all in one night. So trying not to give anything away But I will say if you like Gena showalter's LORDS OF THE UNDERWORLD SERIES. You will love these guys . I can't wait to read about the rest of them . I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to escape and fall in lust with a dark god

Overall I liked this book, but I had a hard time with the main heroine Gwen's easy acceptance of the hero Syrus's readily available harem of girls. It just did not seem to fit with what I had seen of Gwen's character so far in the book... I had to put the book down for a day or so before I could pick up from there. Overall this is a beautifully written book and I will most likely pick up the rest of the series... I will be especially looking to see what happens with Gwen's best friend and Kaid.

This was my first S.A. Price’s book. This won’t be my last! This is the first book in the Inferi Dii Series. I love this story! It was entertaining, intriguing, funny, powerful, action packed and hot! All in one book! I love the two main characters, Syrus and Gwen. They are great together. Gwen is a strong, open mind, funny and sassy woman. Syrus is handsome, funny, powerful and protective. I can’t wait for the second book in the Series! If you like paranormal stories with gods, demons, monsters, sex, intrigue and action packed, this Series is for you. Like I said, all in one! The team author/narrator is pretty good! This was my first listen to Steven Barnett. His narration was perfect for all voices! I absolutely love his voice! I’m looking forward for more books written by this author and narrated by this narrator. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

There are so many things to love about this story. The author does a wonderful job building the world and developing the characters.

I especially liked the way the mystery developed and was resolved. The author also left enough room to develop more stories while still bringing the current story to a close.

So if you are looking for a great romance packed with action, adventure, and some new species, give it a read. It was very light and fun while still having danger and drama. I can't wait to see what come out and see what else S.A. Price has in store for us.

I was given this audio book at my request and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion in this review.

I enjoyed this story and the world building was explained really well. The characters were likeable, apart from Ashley, I didn't like her at all. The gods were interesting bunch, all different with their own secrets and vices. The story was at a good pace and kept me interested throughout.
