J'ai absolument adoré ce premier livre contant les aventures de Nicolas Le Floch - très vite happée par l'intrigue, j'étais contente de retrouver un peu tous les jours ce vieux Paris du 18ème siècle qui se superposait à mon Paris à moi.
Pour qui aime les intrigues policières et l'histoire, ce livre est une mine d'or, un petit bijou. Certaines scènes et détails sordides concernant la question ou des exécutions notoires m'ont retourné l'estomac de bon matin, me faisant penser qu'on vit quand même bien mieux dans une France du 21e siècle...!
L'auteur nous mène par le bout du nez et si je n'avais pas vraiment deviné le dénouement en entier, j'avais vu juste sur certaines choses...
Le seul reproche éventuel qu'on peut faire à ce livre (à mon sens) est aussi une de ses qualités: la recherche et les détails historiques abondent, ce qui est parfois passionnant, pittoresque ou amusant, est d'autres fois plus enclin à ralentir le récit sans raison. Pour ma part, j'ai plus souvent aimé lire ces détails et descriptions, mais pour certains lecteurs, nul doute que ce sera trop (d'autant que le niveau de langue est recherché, ce qui n'en fait pas une lecture "légère").
Vivement que je me plonge dans les autres enquêtes de Nicolas !

Set in 1761 Paris, this is the first in a series of books featuring Nicolas Le Floch. We first meet Nicolas as a young man, whose guardian, Canon Le Floch, has recently died. Abandoned as a baby twenty two years previously, his godfather, Marquis de Ranreuil, seems to have turned against him – refusing to consider him as a possible husband to his daughter, Isabelle, whom he has loved since childhood.
When Nicolas is sent to Paris, he is determined to be a success. Monsieur de Sartine, the Lieutenant General of Police, tells Nicolas he is to be trained in the police force, and lodged with Commissioner Lardin. However, when Lardin goes missing, along with some very delicate papers which the King wants returned, he finds himself thrust into an investigation which has huge implications. Nicolas works with Bourdeau to uncover the truth, in a case which involves him investigating the very people he has been sent to live with.
This is, obviously, the first in a series and much of this mystery involves us meeting a cast of characters who, presumably, will appear in later books. Nicolas Le Floch is a well meaning young man, who both discovers the culprit of the crime and uncovers the mystery of his birth, in this entertaining historical mystery. It has a slow beginning, but is worth persevering with. Atmospheric and with an interesting historical setting, I will certainly be reading on in the series.

Paris, 1761: Der erst 19-jährige Nicolas Le Floch wird von der Polizei mit einem scheinbar "leichten Fall" betraut: Er soll einen Polizeibeamten unauffällig überwachen, der der Korruption verdächtigt wird. Schnell aber wird Nicolas klar, dass viel mehr hinter der Sache stecken muss. Als ein Leichenfund gemacht wird und der verdächtige Polizeibeamte spurlos verschwindet, führen Nicolas Nachforschungen ihn in ein Bordell, in Spielhöllen, Abdeckereien und die Verliese der Bastille.
Mein Leseeindruck:
Ich liebe Historische Romane und ich liebe Krimis. Was könnte also besser sein, als eine Kombination aus diesen beiden Genre!? Als ich "Commissaire Le Floch" im Buchladen entdeckte, hat mich das Buch sofort angesprochen; ich musste es einfach kaufen.
Es ist der erste Band einer neuen Reihe, die in Frankreich schon sehr beliebt sein soll. Ich werden die Reihe auch auf jeden Fall weiterverfolgen, denn dieser erste Band konnte mich überzeugen.
Zunächst hatte mich die Sprache bzw. der Schreibstil etwas irritiert, da er leicht altertümlich wirkt. Ich musste mich erst einmal einlesen, aber danach war ich gefangen in der Geschichte. Letztendlich passt dieser Schreibstil auch perfekt zur Handlung, die ja immerhin im 18. Jahrhundert spielt!
Die Geschichte hat mich daher sehr packen können, und ich habe mich in die Zeit zurückgesetzt gefühlt. Die Beschreibungen der alten Stadt Paris mit ihren Kutschen, den Bordellen, den kleinen dunklen Gassen und den Kirchen hat mich gefesselt.
Auch der Kriminalfall hat mich gepackt, auch wenn er manchmal für mich fast ein wenig in den Hintergrund rückte. Langweilig war das Buch aber nie! Dafür war die ganze Atmosphäre viel zu überwältigend.
Ich hatte viel Spaß und Freude mit dem ersten Buch und freue mich nun auf Band 2!

“On the night of Friday 2 February 1761, a horse-drawn vehicle was laboriously making its way along the highway that leads from La Courtille to La Villette. The day had been gloomy, and at nightfall, sullen skies had unleashed a fierce storm.”
Thus commences this tale. A stinking knacker's yard at Montfaucon, the erstwhile place of execution in medieval Paris, where hidden amongst stinking animal carcasses an old crone accidentally witnesses something horrific.
A police commissioner has disappeared, and a young policeman is given the daunting task to find out what has happened to said commissioner. A very important case for a relative newbie from the provinces (Guérande, Brittany); is there more to the case than meets the eye?

This wonderfully atmospheric mystery takes place during the Mardi Gras Carnival celebrations, and is set during the reign of King Louis XV at the time of the Seven Year War. Author Jean-François Parot is an historian, and his love for- and knowledge of history is very much in evidence. He provides very interesting tidbits of life in Paris at that time, and non-intrusive pop-up notes are provided which are very well worth reading. Some of the characters were real people, and one of them, Charles-Henri Sanson, was an executioner during the reign of both Louis XV and his successors Louis XVI, and indeed it was Sanson who executed Louis XVI during the French Revolution. Sanson plays an important role in this murder mystery. Characters from all walks of life people this story.

There are are quotes from the philosophers, and allusions to music and literature. There are descriptions of magnificent libraries, and there is a delightful description of a chamber music performance in the home of a friend. Monsieur Parot introduces us to some lesser known composers of that time. And of course great food is part of French culture, and so it features prominently. Enjoyed with wine and other suitable beverages of course!

The hero of this novel (and indeed the series) is Nicolas le Floch, a foundling who was raised in Brittany and whose godfather (a nobleman) used his connections to obtain a post for the young man in Paris. It is a coming of age story in which an insecure but clever and personable young man will develop into a shrewd policeman. He will deal not only with personal issues from his youth spent in Brittany and fight his inner demons, but he will also deal with issues to do with his colleagues and the important job in hand. He will make mistakes along the way, but he is smart enough to learn by his mistakes. He will also develop a love for music, and his love for books will grow. The characterisation of le Floch and those around him is excellent.

All is not what it seems in the complex mystery that Nicolas has to solve, and there are devious twists and turns. Oh, and let's not forget the bodies - there are bodies aplenty.

The Mail on Sunday review quoted on the cover of this book says, ‘Reads like a cross between a Maigret mystery and Les Liaisons Dangereuses.’ Sorry, but that's rubbish. It’s a convoluted murder mystery (which Les Liaisons Dangereuses is not) set in 18th-century Paris and contains many squalid details of decomposing corpses, arsenic poisoning and impoverished prostitutes (which LLD does not).
However, that review isn’t the author's fault. What is his fault is the heavy-handedness with which he shows us how much research he’s done. A completely gratuitous reference to Casanova having witnessed a public execution is the worst example, but details of contemporary operatic performances and the fact that boys in the street were selling Bavarian tea are all thrown in with a shovel. I have no doubt that they are accurate; I just didn’t feel they were relevant.
Disappointing.
One excellent character, though – the hangman Sanson, whose observations of the corpses are worth ten of the doctors’ autopsies.

I'm so obsessed with this new to American soil series, I just ordered the second and third books from England. You'll have to force yourself to put this book down. Will totally consume your life--which is what great books always do.

I enjoyed this most for its historical fiction aspect. This is a mystery set in late 1700s Paris, and the detailed way it describes the city, its people, and environs is absolutely fabulous. As a mystery, though... the culprit was easy to guess early on, and it exasperated me with its reliance on stale tropes. The male characters are well developed; the few women are saints or whores. The only black man falls into tragic circumstances.
If only it had managed to be more original in every way! The book felt like promise unrealized. I am not encouraged to read onward.

„Commissaire Le Floch und Das Geheimnis der Weißmäntel“ von Jean-François Parot ist eine weitere Station in meiner andauernden Suche nach meiner Heimat im Genre der historischen Romane. Der Reihenauftakt, der in Frankreich bereits 2000 veröffentlicht wurde, wurde mir vom Newsletter der Random House Gruppe schmackhaft gemacht. Die Mischung aus Setting, einer delikaten Staatsaffäre und einer Mordermittlung weckte meine Neugier. Außerdem habe ich bisher nur sehr wenig Erfahrung mit französischen Schriftsteller_innen; ich konnte also zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen. Ich fragte das Buch beim Bloggerportal an und erhielt ein Rezensionsexemplar.
1759 wird der junge Notariatsgehilfe Nicolas Le Floch von heute auf morgen nach Paris beordert. Er soll sich bei Polizeipräfekt Gabriel de Sartine melden, um eine Ausbildung als Gesetzeshüter zu beginnen. Sartine teilt ihn dem grimmigen, schroffen Kommissar Lardin zu, der sich den Anweisungen des Polizeichefs widerwillig beugt. So beginnt Nicolas‘ neues Leben in der pulsierenden französischen Metropole. Er arbeitet und lernt fleißig und besitzt zu viel Anstand und Respekt, um die regelmäßigen Fragen des Polizeipräfekten zu den Gewohnheiten seines Mentors Lardin in Zweifel zu ziehen. 1761, zwei Jahre später, verstirbt unerwartet Nicolas‘ Vormund. Er eilt in seine bretonische Heimat, um an den Trauerfeierlichkeiten teilzunehmen. Bei seiner Rückkehr nach Paris erwartet ihn eine unerfreuliche Überraschung: Lardin ist verschwunden und Sartine eröffnet ihm, dass der gealterte Kommissar in eine weitreichende Korruptionsaffäre verwickelt ist, die sogar König Ludwig XV. bedroht. Nicolas soll Lardin finden. Unerschrocken stürzt er sich in die Ermittlungen, während auf den Straßen der Stadt der Karneval tobt. Wird er den abtrünnigen Lardin aufspüren und so einen internationalen Skandal verhindern können?
„Commissaire Le Floch und Das Geheimnis der Weißmäntel“ war für mich ein gewagtes Experiment. Mit einem historischen Krimi bewegte ich mich weit außerhalb meiner Wohlfühlzone, denn ich habe bekanntermaßen so meine Schwierigkeiten mit historischen Romanen und Krimis stehen normalerweise erst gar nicht auf meiner Lektüreliste, weil ich sie zu langweilig finde. Es freut mich daher umso mehr, dass ich dieses Experiment als Erfolg verbuchen kann. Obwohl alle äußeren Faktoren dagegensprachen, gefiel mir der Auftakt der Reihe „Nicolas Le Floch“ überraschend gut. Ich fühlte mich in den Händen des Autors Jean-François Parot sehr gut aufgehoben; der studierte Historiker und anerkannte Experte für das 18. Jahrhundert vermittelte mir eine verblüffend präzise, atmosphärische und realistische Vision der Lebensumstände in Paris in der turbulenten Epoche der Aufklärung. Die Lektüre war eine überzeugende mentale Zeitreise, die mich trotz des etwas umständlichen Schreibstils mühelos mitten in die Straßen der französischen Hauptstadt beförderte. Die verzwickt konstruierte Rahmenhandlung des Kriminalfalls portioniert die schiere Fülle geschichtlicher Fakten, Hintergründe und Tatsachen in mundgerechte Häppchen, die dazu einladen, mithilfe des neuen Wissens munter mitzurätseln. Ich habe nicht erwartet, beim Einschlafen tatsächlich darüber nachzugrübeln, wie die verschiedenen Ebenen des Falls interagieren. Es gelang mir jedoch nicht, das Puzzle zusammenzusetzen, da mich die vielen geschichtsträchtigen Namen und teilweise konträr verlaufenden Interessen verwirrten und ablenkten. Für meinen Geschmack hätte Parot den politischen Aspekten der komplizierten Korruptionsaffäre, die sich rasant mit einer Mordermittlung verbindet, außerdem deutlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit schenken können, wenngleich ich verstehe, dass sein Kernanliegen, den Pariser Kosmos im Jahr 1761 detailliert abzubilden, besser innerhalb privat-bürgerlicher Grenzen umzusetzen war. Er eröffnete sich so die Möglichkeit, die alles beherrschenden Standesunterschiede der Bevölkerungsschichten explizit herauszuarbeiten und – was ich herrlich sympathisch fand – besonderes Augenmerk auf die Beschreibung des Essens als kulturelle Facette zu legen. Schade, dass der Protagonist dieser bunten, lebendigen Kulisse nicht gerecht wurde. Nicolas mutete wie eine erwachsene Variante Oliver Twists an: konturlos, einseitig und modellhaft. Er trägt keinen Funken Verschlagenheit, Verlogenheit oder generell Schlechtigkeit in sich, verhält sich stets tugendhaft, gesetzestreu und regelkonform. Ich fand ihn sowohl menschlich, als auch als Ermittler unglaubwürdig, denn niemand kommt ohne Ecken und Kanten aus, schon gar kein Polizist, der sich gegenüber perfiden, kriminellen Komplotten behaupten muss. Sein sympathischer, aber tadelloser Charakter bedingt eine Profillosigkeit, die ihn neben der puren Vitalität des Settings verblassen lässt. Ich stelle es ungern fest, doch die Figur des Nicolas Le Floch ist meiner Ansicht nach bedauerlicherweise zu schwach, um „Das Geheimnis der Weißmäntel“ entscheidend zu prägen.
„Commissaire Le Floch und Das Geheimnis der Weißmäntel“ ist ein faszinierender historischer Krimi, der Fakten und Fiktion geschickt verblendet und dessen größte Stärke in der hervorragenden, atmosphärischen Darstellung des Settings liegt. Jean-François Parot bewies seine exzellente Expertise und zeichnete für mich ein schlüssiges, authentisches Bild von Paris im 18. Jahrhundert, das Kriminalfall und Protagonist des Reihenauftakts mit Leichtigkeit überstrahlt. Dadurch ist das Buch zwar eher interessant als spannend, entpuppte sich allerdings nichtsdestotrotz als lohnende Lektüre. Ich kann mir durchaus vorstellen, der Fortsetzung Commissaire Le Floch und Der Brunnen der Toten eine Chance zu geben. In einer Epoche, in der ganz Europa politisch in Aufruhr war, gibt es sicher noch einige Geheimnisse, die Kommissar Le Floch aufklären kann.

1780s Paris. A 22 year old orphan who has been bought up by his wealthy guardian comes to the city. He is suddenly a policeman, then a confidant to the big boss, then given a most secret of secret assignments and an ending where he brilliantly solves numerous riddles.. There are a lot of prostitutes, brutal murders, men behaving badly, recipes of the time and the King is still a God. Only one of the murderers and the policemen's offsider talk about the bad side of when the poor have no rights, no hope and no future. Overall, I thought this one to be a bit far fetched with the hero just too handsome and too clever.

Le début d’une série que je vais suivre. Le héros, Nicolas Le Floch, évolue dans le Paris d’avant la Révolution. Une série très prometteuse.

uff endlich durch! Hab das mal vor Jahren angefangen und aufgegeben. Jetzt habe ich nochmal 2 Monate gebraucht um durch zu kommen... Eigentlich ganz gute Storyline, kam aber wegen den vielen Namen durcheinander. Würde ich nur für schnelle Leser*innen empfehlen, die vielleicht auch die ganze Recherche und Historie mehr wertschätzen als ich

This was a good first novel...I picked it up because I currently live in Paris (and have traveled extensively in Brittany) and I thought it would be cool to read about familiar streets and areas from a bygone era. On this point Parot did not disappoint. He really gave a sense of Paris during the mid-18th century and the tensions that lead up to the revolution are present, without being foreboding. I disagree with some reviewers that criticized the author for being too detailed or showing off his level of research. I appreciated learning about obscure items or details. It heightened my sense of place. This is part of why I read historical fiction. It did slow the pace down a bit, but that is easily forgiven since I enjoyed the ride. Given that this is the first book in the series, too, the author probably felt he needed to provide background and set the tone for future stories.
Nicolas Le Floch was sympathetic and likeable, maturing along the way from a naïve bumpkin in the big city to a young man growing accustom to his own skin. Good character devlopment. The ending was a bit too neatly wrapped up. though. If it was for dramatic effect, it was a bit overly done.
But it was a good read...so I bought the others in the series. Before I leave Paris, I would like to see what else Msr. Le Floch gets into.

A great mystery thrown into the historical fiction pile -- and it works! You walk in Paris of old and even the stench is there....gritty, sharp and very well done!

Die Grundidee dieser Geschichte gefällt mir sehr gut. Ein junger, gescheiter Mann kommt 1761 nach Paris und wird dort mit der Aufgabe betraut, ein Verbrechen aufzuklären. Leider passiert aber so viel und ich hatte beim Lesen das Gefühl, dass dem Autor immer wieder neue Ideen gekommen sind, die er alle in ein und dieselbe Geschichte packen wollte. So wurde es einfach zu viel auf einmal. Parot hätte auch verschiedene Geschichten daraus machen können. Das nächste Problem, das ich leider hatte, war die Sprache. Der Autor verwendet überwiegend lange, schachtelige Sätze, so dass ich viele Passagen mehrmals lesen musste, um sie ganz zu verstehen. Auch scheint mir die Sprache irgendwie zu modern für eine Geschichte, die im 18 Jahrhungert spielt. Natürlich möchte ich kein Buch mit dem damaligen Wortlaut, aber etwas angepasster hätte es schon sein können.
Äußerst hilfreich wiederum fand ich die Karte im Einband, mit den wichtigsten Handlungsorten der Geschichte. Zu Beginn des Buches finde sich außerdem eine Übersicht der handelnden Personen. Dies finde ich sehr spannend, da das Buch doch tatsächlich auf vielen belegten Begebenheiten basiert.
Äußerst hilfreich wiederum fand ich die Karte im Einband, mit den wichtigsten Handlungsorten der Geschichte. Zu Beginn des Buches finde sich außerdem eine Übersicht der handelnden Personen. I should write this in French but I don’t feel like it. Overall it was ok but not great, and the series has potential. My main issue with this book was that it took forever to read. It may have only been just 300-some pages, but it felt like almost a thousand. Now, I don’t know whether it was the long chapters or the fact that I was reading it on my ereader and it might have gone better had I opted for print…maybe I’ll try to get a physical copy of the next in the series. Or maybe I should read the next one when I haven’t just bought some new computer games.
There were also some rather convenient coincidences and a tendency for prisoners to die by suicide while in custody. Admittedly, it wasn’t always convenient when they died, but as a wrap up it felt weak. I’m not sure I’d call it predictable but I did guess right in several instances.
Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy reading this as a buddy read! I just wasn’t too impressed by it and hope the next one is better fleshed out.

Encore une résolution d'enquête un peu nulle, mais globalement un premier tome meilleur que le second ("L'Homme au ventre de plomb", que j'avais lu en premier), avec plus d'émotions et globalement mieux fichu niveau intrigue.
Beaucoup de clichés d'écriture qui ont terriblement vieilli (on sent que c'est Jean-François le Boomer qui écrit, surtout niveau perso féminins...) mais un portrait très informé de la vie quotidienne à l'époque bourré de détails hyper intéressants et immersifs. Globalement ça reste encore une fois une très bonne lecture cacahuète.

Set in 1761 Paris, this is the first in a series of books featuring Nicolas Le Floch. We first meet Nicolas as a young man, whose guardian, Canon Le Floch, has recently died. Abandoned as a baby twenty two years previously, his godfather, Marquis de Ranreuil, seems to have turned against him – refusing to consider him as a possible husband to his daughter, Isabelle, whom he has loved since childhood.
When Nicolas is sent to Paris, he is determined to be a success. Monsieur de Sartine, the Lieutenant General of Police, tells Nicolas he is to be trained in the police force, and lodged with Commissioner Lardin. However, when Lardin goes missing, along with some very delicate papers which the King wants returned, he finds himself thrust into an investigation which has huge implications. Nicolas works with Bourdeau to uncover the truth, in a case which involves him investigating the very people he has been sent to live with.
This is, obviously, the first in a series and much of this mystery involves us meeting a cast of characters who, presumably, will appear in later books. Nicolas Le Floch is a well meaning young man, who both discovers the culprit of the crime and uncovers the mystery of his birth, in this entertaining historical mystery. It has a slow beginning, but is worth persevering with. Atmospheric and with an interesting historical setting, I will certainly be reading on in the series.

I was quiet looking forward to this book.Historical fictional mysteries are my fave genre.But I was a bit disappointed with this book.I think it may have something to do with the fact its a translated book.French humour,style of writing and speech is slightly different from English so I dont think the story translates too well.I found the character dialogue a bit stilted and baffling at times.And the mystery wasnt very exciting.I also found I couldnt identify with the main character.The characters personality was odd.One minute a naive young man newly in Paris,a second later an experienced detective and then back again.I gave up in the end.

I would really like to read the succeeding books in this series I have just discovered. Considering how good this is one is surprised that - despite the fact that these need to be translated from the French - the American public is not yet familiar with Parot's work.
Set in Paris at the time of Louis XIV, you might think this is just another historical mystery, but the protagonist is quite endearing in his naiveté and in the maturity he has gained by the last page. Good character development. The plot is quite twisted with lots of turns and very pictorial descriptions. Interesting footnotes are included at the back.

I was nervous to read this after seeing very mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed it. The main character is interesting and charming, Paris is well-illustrated (although maybe slightly over described) and the mystery was well-paced. I am surprised by how much I did enjoy it! Only lost a star for the ending, a type I never really appreciate in mysteries. But still a wonderful period read, and I hope there is a second!

Ich bin ja ein großer Fan der Altmeister des Krimigenre also ist diese Serie einfach ein MUß gewesen. Als es dann ankam wurde ich nicht enttäuscht. Die Aufmachung ist einfach toll. Ein echter Glücksfund muss ich sagen. Kurios war mein erster Eindruck als ich die Innenseite aufschlug, war : das Spiel Scottland Yard. Bei näherem Hinsehen aber ist es eine Karte von Paris von 1761 mit diversen markierten Plätzen, welche bei der Geschichte eine wesentliche Rolle spielen. Sieht echt toll aus. Und ich bin von Anfang an dabei.
Der Protagonist Nicholas wurde als Baby in einer Kirche in der Bretagne ausgesetzt. Aufgewachsen ist er dann beim Notar Le Floch. Den guten Namen Le Floch hat er von ihm übernommen.
Danach studierte er bei den Jesuiten und betätigte sich bei seinem Adoptivvater als Notariatsgehilfe.
Mit 19 Jahren und einem Empfehlungsschreiben bewirbt er sich bei der Polizei in Paris. Zu Beginn hat er es nicht leicht, da der Präfekt sehr misstrauisch und streng ist. Aber er erkennt auch schnell, das Nicholas ein echter Rohdiamant ist, loyal, ehrgeizig, klug und das gewisse Auge für den Polizeiberuf hat.
Als bald bekommt Nicholas seinen ersten Fall zugewiesen. Eigentlich nichts Wildes, jedenfalls zu Beginn aber nach und nach führt der Fall zu einem Mord. Es reicht bis hinauf in die königliche Gesellschaft. Selbst der König wird bedroht. Total spannend aufgebaut!
Schafft es Nicholas seinen ersten Fall zu lösen und auch König Ludwig XV zu retten?
Die örtlichen Beschreibungen sind auch super toll, ein Kenner des Paris des 18. Jahrhunderts. Ich warte schon sehnsüchtig auf die Fortsetzung! Ich verstehe auch absolut warum diese Reihe so erfolgreich ist. Ein Must-Read!

In 1759, Canon Le Floch sends his ward, the foundling Nicolas, from Brittany in France to the capital, Paris. The young man is to enter the service of Prefect Gabriel de Sortine, who has just been appointed to at least curb the omnipresent corruption in the ranks of the police. De Sortine assigns Le Floch to Commissioner Guillaume Lardin, an experienced criminal investigator who proves to be a good mentor to the newcomer over the next two years.
De Sortine is also a cog in the wheel of contemporary diplomacy, which relies heavily on spies and traitors. Since 1756, Europe has been embroiled in the Seven Years' War, which is also being fought in the overseas colonies. Those with access to secret political information can make a lot of money from it.
In the spring of 1761, Inspector Lardin disappears without a trace. He has either got too close to some corrupt colleagues or fallen victim to his out-of-control gambling addiction; Lardin was also married to a woman who had several lovers. De Sortine assigns the case to Le Floch, who feels overwhelmed at first, but quickly proves his talent as a detective.
The trail leads not only to the underworld of Paris, but also to the circles of the high nobility, even to the royal court. A complicated criminal case threatens to become a matter of state that could destroy the fragile political balance. Le Floch has a heavy burden on his shoulders, which is not made any lighter when several assassination attempts prove that the young policeman is on the right track.
Crime fiction and history: when done right, this combination brings fresh blood to both genres. Jean-François Parot is undoubtedly one of those who understand their craft, which is only simple in principle: a good story must be told well, with entertainment at the forefront.
Parot avoids trying to reinvent the wheel. This first Le Floch volume follows familiar and proven models: a young, intelligent but inexperienced, even naive man arrives in the big city, which the author describes as a centre and a maelstrom. Then as now, Paris was the heart of France. It was the seat of an extremely centralised government, where scientists and artists came together and created a cultural level that remained unmatched in the rest of France.
While the Age of Enlightenment brought about a veritable leap forward in science, technology and culture, the justice system lagged far behind. Investigations continued to be conducted as in the Middle Ages. Torture was a matter of course. An execution could degenerate into a bizarre bloodbath; at one point, Parot has the executioner of Paris recount the gruesome end of a failed regicide.
In contrast, genuine criminal investigation remains a requirement that is rarely fulfilled. Although murder victims are examined and their bodies opened, what good does this do when medicine, among other things, is convinced that patients must first be bled? Most police officers replace the search for and interpretation of evidence with ‘life experience’ and prejudice. The ‘guilty’ party is considered caught if he or she cannot defend themselves against the allegations made.
