Kenya Wright wrote her first novel during her third year at UM Law school. She dropped out a month after the release and never looked back.

Words are power,
and Kenya wants to be the greatest wizard that ever lived.

It's an audacity to inspire
and teach the healing of love through arousal.

It's this crazy idea that love
can not only help a reader escape,
but the story can also teach the person
about being human,
while making them laugh,
cry,
and hot for more sex.

Kenya Wright is quickly becoming my first auto-read indie author. I am a big fan of her Habitat series --and though this book has a decidedly different feel, it reeled me in all the same.

Brie is a special breed of human, one of the few who can produce vampire offspring. She and the other women of her kind are kept in the custody of the Quiet King. They are called dominas, but they are really conscripted breeders, forced to remain with the king to bear baby after baby. Brie is one of the lucky ones. In her two years at the compound, the king has not forced himself on her... yet. But her time is coming. So she plans an escape.

One of the king's daughters helps Brie get out and hooks her up with Samuel, a vampire who helps people escape from slavery. Brie can think only of getting back to her husband and twin daughters she was ripped away from. OK, maybe, she thinks about Samuel a bit too. But she tries really hard to fight it.

This part of the story tripped me up a little. When Brie talked about being married, I was bothered by the idea of something happening between her and Samuel. I don't like cheater stories. I put it aside, though, hoping for the best and letting myself revel in Samuel's sexy goodness. I won't spoil how the husband thing plays out, but I will let you know that I ended up very ok with Brie and Samuel together.

The lion's share of the story follows Brie and Samuel as he tries to get her back home --and as they try to fight the overwhelming attraction between them. They fail miserably at one of these endeavors. I'll let you guess which one.

The sex is hot, y'all. Hot. Hot. Hot. But that's not all the story has going for it. The world building is really cool too. I liked the characters... And some thing a little unusual: the illustrations. The book has about 4-5 of them and I really think they added to the story. I'm not sure everyone will be as enthusiastic about the idea as I was, but personally, I thought they were awesome.

This is part one in the Vampire King series and there is clearly more story to tell, but I was satisfied with ending. I often find myself rolling my eyes at Epilogues, but I really liked this one --which gives us a little first person POV on Samuel. It was cool getting inside his head.

I will definitely read book two.

Welcome to the vampire city....

The Quiet King rules there

He is domineering, possessive, and sadistic....
A domina’s only purpose in life was to birth vampire children for the Quiet King.
Brie is a domina.

Samuel is what is called a "Pathfinder", and he helpes Brie to escape.

Samuel is Alpha to his core (yeeyy)! He finds himself drawn to Brie for the same reason the vampire king is,her rare blood type.
I am already reading the next in the series. I NEED to know what will become of Samuel and Brie...

Initial thoughts: Very enjoyable. Great world-building here. Interesting use of illustrations. Will be reading the next book! The fang sex is hot - I love it when vampire romances actually make use of fangs/blood during sex. However, it did not strike me as erotic as there was a balance in terms of an overall plot, interesting world-building. Perhaps it is erotic because the vampire Samuel becomes obsessed with Brie's blood in the end that he has no cogent thought left. More thoughts to come.

Kenya Wright is THE MASTER!!! Photobucket I love her books and from the time I have read "The Habitat" series to know I have known she is THE QUEEN of paranormal romance and Dark Fantasy Romance books!! I applaud you!!! bravo gif

If you have not read one of her books, you MUST run out right now and read one!! I am not kidding, her books are highly entertaining and will keep you riveted to the pages!! Her characters can be dark and gritty but loveable, and she knows how to write an Alpha male that will have you melting on the spot!
Escape is the first book in the new series: "The Vampire King Series." It is off the charts hot!! Once again, Kenya has created a complex dark world where vampire's reside. One thing I love about this book is that the vampire's in it are violent and aggressive; the way a true vampire should be! In this hard world there is a woman named Brie who wants to escape a life of being used as "breeding machine" by "The Quiet King" This king has masses of woman in his kingdom who are "Dominas". These Dominas have blood that is compatible with the king, which makes them able to create babies with him. These babies are raised to become warriors and fight for the king's army. It truly is not the kind of life Brie wants and she is desperate to get back to her husband and children who she hasn't seen in two years.
Samuel is what is called a "Pathfinder", and he has been asked to take Brie home. What they both do not expect is the instant attraction they feel towards one another and the great desire to get lost in one anothers arms. Their journey is one of many trials and much sexual tension. Will they be able to conquer their desire or will they succumb to the sparks that they are having such trouble to ignore?
There was not a single moment in this book where I was bored or wanting it to end. The relationship that develops between Samuel and Brie is blazing hot but also endearing as well. Samuel is Alpha to his core but he is also extremely restrained as well and so it is often hard for Brie to know exactly what he is all about. Towards the end of the book, the emotion that I felt for Brie had me in tears. She has some very hard decisions to make and my heart breaks for her and I found that I could so relate to her character.
This book is top of the line and it just doesn't get much better than this in the Dark Fantasy Genre. The illustrations that Kenya provides are an added bonus and just goes to show you that her work is top quality. The epilogue at the end was done in Samuel's point of view; which was also a wonderful addition to an already superior story. Kenya Wright is an author to watch, she is an author who delivers nothing but the best and she will be on my auto list without a doubt!

As a special breed of human, Brie is kept under the control of the vampire king. He uses women like Brie to create offspring, so that he can continue building his civilization. When it’s become apparent that the king is ready to use Brie, she plans an escape. With the help of one of the king’s daughters, Brie is lead to Samuel, another vampire, who helps save women like herself.

Once Brie has been rescued, she is eager to get back to the life she had prior to being held captive. With Samuel’s help, the two of them set off to find her husband and children. While on their journey however, sparks fly between the two of them, and Brie must choose whether to go back to her family, or to continue a life with Samuel.

This book was amazing! I was instantly drawn in to the author’s unique and exciting vampire world. The characters are wonderfully written and well-rounded, keeping the reader thoroughly engaged with every turn of the page. The romance was beautiful, and the sex was incredibly steamy!

My only problem with the book was that it was a lot of story crammed in to a small amount of pages, which made the progression of the romance between Brie and Samuel seem rushed. That being said, however, this is the first in a series of books, and I am very much looking forward to reading the next in the series!

I loved this 11 chapter book. Yowza! It was very steamy! It was told through Brie’s first person point-of-view. She was a domina (a.k.a. slave to the Quiet King) who wanted to run away. I liked that she was a strong-willed female character–one that took matters into her own hands instead of just accepting someone’s word.

Samuel was a path finder, willing to help her escape. He was everything I want to see in a vampire: sexy, manipulative, possessive, strong, arrogant. Did I mention sexy? He reminded me of Damon Salvatore. Brie was the only one who could handle him. I loved the sexual tension between both of them. Their back and forth was intense. She was stubborn, so was he. Brie and Samuel made a cute couple, trying to one up each other.

After he bites her, they form a link where they could read each other’s minds. So not only was their conversations entertaining, so was their inner-thoughts. She kept pleading for him to stop reading her thoughts, but he wouldn’t listen.

Kenya Wright had an amazing talent with scenes, basically storytelling in general. The details she focused on helped me get a clear idea of Brie’s voice. I got lost in the story. It was a fast read, and the cliffhanger has me motivated to read the next book. In fact, I’m a huge fan of the author’s writing style.

I RECOMMEND this book to read.

Yes, yes, yes. Oh, this is what I love about paranormal romance. This was such an incredible read. I will be reading it again. Kenya Wright has quite the read here. I am so glad I jumped on this the moment I saw the cover. I love arms, what can I say? I know you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but with a cover like that, I have some very sexy expectations. And boy, Wright delivered. Thank you so much.

This is my first read by Wright even though she has been on my wishlist for a while. I am glad I started this. I love Wright's writing style. This story was amazing. I love the world she created. Escape was super original. Her take on vampires was amazing. Wright has created a world where vampires are known and coexist with humans. Of course vampires must live on blood, but the delicacy comes from the dominas. Dominas are human women who have the right kind of blood to create children with vampires. They are ruled by a king, The Quiet King. He rules all and wants the dominas all to himself. If they create boys with a special mark that means they are a prince, the babies are executed long before they can rule. The Quiet King wants to rule all and he makes sure that villages in trouble trade their special daughters for his assistance. And this is what happened to Brie.

Our main character Brie was in the fight for her life. She hates being a slave to the King and she wants to go home to her family. She did it save her family and village, but can not take being slave and watching babies being slaughtered. She escapes from the castle where she is held. She was a great lead because she really fought for her life and didn't want anyone to lose their lives for her. She is getting some help from a pathfinder named Samuel. He doesn't want to help a domina considering all the people that will die if the King finds out, but he can't help that he is attracted to her either. Samuel has a secret of his own that no one can find out, but he is slowly beginning to trust her with it.

This book was hard to put down. I loved everything about this book. Wright is one hell of a writer. I love how much creativity was put into this novella. This book was so sexy and exciting. You will love these characters and where this story goes. If you are like me and you love paranormal romance books, you better add this to your cart. It will make you very happy, in more ways than one.

When I saw the super sexy cover of Kenya's novella, it was game on. I knew from the cover alone I was in for another heart palpitating steamy novel from this author, and the book blurb just added the bonus of looking forward to a pretty fresh plot.

What I enjoy about Kenya's writing is how well she can world build. This novella is no exception. In 127 pages, she was able to bring me fully into this world where vampires are the norm. A king rules them all, and procreates with females that carry a certain gene, making it possible to conceive vampire children. This king doesn't sound all that attractive, physically or emotionally. In fact, he is quite paranoid, and has all male babies killed so there is no threat to him keeping his throne. Pretty vile dude.

Brie is one such female with the gene, and understandably, wants to get the heck out of the castle. With a little help from the inside, she is taken to Samuel and an escape is planned. But once he discovers that she is a domina, he is not so thrilled with helping her anymore. However, there is an attraction and a pull that neither of them can deny, and becomes the key to who Samuel really is.

Since meeting Kenya Wright through Goodreads.com, I have been on a pretty steady diet of her novels. I want to thank Kenya for her continuous generosity in providing me with a free ecopy of her novels for review. I have yet to be even remotely disappointed reading one of her books. They are satisfyingly sexy and steamy, and there is no doubt that she will continue to have much success with her writing.

'Escape' is no exception on the steam meter. This novella is jam packed with a sexy hunk, an endearing and brave heroine, and a plot line that was exciting and riveting. It was, yet again, a hard one to put down. Pour yourself a glass of wine, light a scented candle, and curl up with your very own copy of 'Escape'. If you enjoy Paranormal Romance, this is definitely a successful start to another exciting series by this author.

*I received a eBook copy of this book for free to review from the author; this in no way influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.*

Escape by Kenya Wright

The Quiet King. The blind and deaf ruler of vampires seemingly should be disadvantaged, harmless even. But that’s not quite the case here. With a harem of human dominas acquired for the sole purpose of bearing his vampire children, he maintains an upper hand. Brie, a domina for two years, is nearing her turn to begin procreating with the King. Unfortunately, his policy to slaughter babies who could challenge him is a pretty big turn off. Her only hope to escape lies with Samuel, a vampire known for leading slaves to freedom.

Slaves are one thing; dominas are another, and they happen to be the one exception for Samuel as it’s too risky, and not just the from the ramifications of the palace. Brie lies about her identity, but her blood doesn’t and the closer she gets to freedom, the closer she gets to Samuel as her blood becomes increasingly irresistible.

For 127 pages, I was very enthralled. Usually it’s hard to get into a novellas for me, especially for a new and unestablished series, but the world-building and characters were well done. Brie’s inner conflict as she fights the temptation of Samuel while trying to remain faithful to her husband and children to whom she desperately wants to return kept things pretty interesting. I finished actually wishing this could have been a full length novel. I was definitely left wanting more. There is a lot of romantic tension, but plenty of action as well, often times pretty gruesome. There’s certainly more to the story that can be told and I, for one, hope it is. The Quiet King has potential to be a very good villain and we’re only scratching the surface.

There are illustrations provided sporadically which were a nice touch, though I think they could be colored and placed all together in a certain sections of the book. At this point I don’t think they add or detract from the story, but it did make me think that this could be a great graphic novel.

As a fan of Vampire fiction I generally approach new series with some trepidation, for fear of how they will butcher traditional vampire lore in favour of innovation. However my fears were allayed with "Escape" the first book of Kenya Wright's Vampire King series. While still introducing some new ideas and visuals, this sticks to many of the tradtional staples of popular vampire lore, for example vampires can be killed with a wooden stake. But here Wright very cleverly takes this to the next level, incorporating these ideas into the world building itself - for example due to the vulnerability to wood there are no wooden buildings allowed in the Vampire city - creating an immersive and captivating environment.

The characters are well rounded despite the fact that we are introduced to them very quickly, the book is not overly lenghthy and gets straight to the point. This is true in particular with the protagonist Brie, a "Domina" - a human woman possessing a gene that allows her to procreate successfully with vampires. Her motivations are sound and relatable, her actions never seeming out of the realm of possibility. The social and political hierachies in play are extremely well thought out and easy to follow. The "Quiet King" - the ruler of the world - is in particular a fascinating character who will hopefully be further explored later in the series.

The introduction of the romance between Brie and her Pathfinder guide Samuel is quite abrupt and a little confronting. However this is slowly smoothed out and begins to feel more natural a progression as the story continues. In this it reminded me very much of the Dark Hunter series by Sherilyn Kenyon. The sex (and there is sex, this is an erotic paranormal romance series) is not overdone or crassly described, and helps to build the tension in the main story line.

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next installment.

I was provided Escape as an ARC for an honest review.

Kenya Wright has the awesome ability of making me want to simultaneously applaud and strangle her. Applaud because she consistently comes through with steam Paranormal Romances that deliver with strong female leads, sexy Alpha males and fabulous world building. Strangle, because she is constantly bringing me into her world only to leave me stranded back on Earth wanting to once again climb into her character’s worlds and see what happens next.

Escape is a story of a woman, Brie, trying to escape her captivity as a “domina”, a woman who can breed with the Vampire King. During her captivity she has had the luck of being untouched by the King, but her time is coming soon. While held as a domina she witnesses the death of many baby princes at the hands of the King, while the female offspring are bred to be servants if they’re not deemed attractive by the king. She is helped by a Princess of the castle who introduces her to a Pathfinder to take her back home to her husband and children. I don’t want to spoil anything, but lets just say that the Pathfinder is a hot Vamp and Brie is hot headed and hot…where could this lead? Needless to say I am awaiting breathlessly Part II, Captured!

GIRLY NOTE: I imagine Brie was wearing this in the beginning:

I stumbled across a great book review for this book; I just had to read it – immediately. I ventured to the authors website seeking additional information on the book & discover more great news…It is part of a Trilogy – that’s right we get 3 installments.

As I am sure you are aware the book market has been flooded with Vampire books, but the author has put just enough of a twist on this paranormal tale to keep make it her own. As a reader, I often feel overwhelmed with information (even critical information) necessary to build the world, characters, background, and plotlines; this author summarized the entire history of vampire/human evolution in 2 paragraphs.

I also want to comment on the illustrations; they are fabulous! The author has a few samples on her website which you can view by clicking here.

I Can't Wait for the Next installment...Captured.

This was the first vampire book I've ever read. If all vampire books are like this one, I could see myself reading this genre. Brie is a special kind of human who can breed with vampires. As such, she allows herself to become one of the domina, which means living in captivity to be used by the vampire king. The writing is superb, the plot is well constructed and the characters are very well developed. Kenya Wright is a skilled writer, and would probably be successful in any genre she chose to pursue. I highly recommend this captivating read.

An enchanting tale of escape only to get captured between lust and devotion.

Escape is a story about a woman name Brie, who is trying to escape the kingdom of a vampire king. He keeps a harem of woman who give birth to his children. These children will be come his army so that he can maintain control over his kingdom. Brie wants to escape the kingdom to return to her husband and children that she misses deeply.

Another woman named Octavia, who is considered a princess, helps her to escape the kingdom by taking her to a vampire tracker named Samuel. Samuel is reluctant to help her because his gut tells him something is wrong with the whole situation. Shortly after he agrees to help her, he discovers her true position as a Domina in the king's court. Domina is the term used for the woman who are capable of conceiving and birthing vampire babies.

Samuel finds himself drawn to Brie for the same reason the vampire king is, her rare blood type. Wanting to keep Brie for himself, he reluctantly takes her back to her village to reunite her with her husband and children. The question remains, will she return to her life as wife and mother or will she chose to stay with Samuel.

This book is a page turner for sure. I love a good paranormal romance anyway and this one didn't disappoint. The cover was appealing and added to the overall presentation of the book. The storyline was believable and well written. However this novella is a part of a series. I can't wait to see what happens next. I am unable to find any complaints with this book and must admit I would buy if it hadn't been provided to me. So I have given it the rare five stars.

If paranormal romance is your thing, than you will definitely enjoy this one. This book is available in e-book format only. Click here for to purchase.

I loved this story! And there are some amazing illustrations within. They gave a picture perfect effect to what the author wanted to express and made it even more enjoyable! A definite MUST read for all paranormal romance fans looking for something original, enjoyable and satisfying!

Brie has been a domina for 2 long years. She remained untouched by the Quiet King or any other vampire throughout that time. Wanting and needing to get back home, to the life and family she had before becoming a domina she gains aid to escape and be whole again. What greets her on the journey is everything but what is expected. It’s not easy getting away from the Quiet Kings palace or the dangers that lurk on the trail to her home, family and freedom. She also runs into a crossroad and is unsure which way to go. Samuel has guided her this far, but will he help her make the right decision?

Samual is very well known for helping people across the boarders and aiding them to safety. He has one rule and that rule is he’ll help out all except domina’s. When Brie is brought to him, he knows exactly what he has in his care and cannot bring himself to refuse the beauty before him, now to help her realize what is plain as day before her eyes and available to her every single need and desire.

Be ready for some tears, laughter and quite a few surprises. I am already impatient for the next in the series. I NEED to know what will become of Samuel and Brie and if their paths will continue on the same…

Who the heck is Kenya Wright? I asked myself when I clicked on her email. Well, Kenya Wright seems to be an author to watch it turns out.
You know, not even a year ago I was safe and happy reading in my own little bubble with my comfortable authors I know and love never once wanting to break out and try an author no one’s never heard of, much less an author that self published. I have no idea why I was so tight laced about it. But never again! Yeah, there are some bad apples in the bunch, just like with everything but Escape was so far from only an ok read.
When I first glanced over the book, I was really disappointed that it was only about a hundred pages. I thought; ‘What the heck kind of story can be filled in that amount of time and still have a satisfactorily ending?’ Well, it was not a great ending since it turned out to be the first in a series, so the story will continue on into bk2. BUT, the story in between? S*@%T! One word. Explosive.
The sex was amazing! The plot was inventive. The characters were out of this world good; From the blind vampire king to the people who lived in the sewer; it was….really good. I loved the epilogue that was told by Samuel, the hero. Totally got you on the edge of your seat waiting for more from Kenya Wright. And oh I almost forgot! The illustrations in the book were something new, gave a whole new perspective on the story, a good one though. The pictures reminded me a lot of The Kama Sutra.

I have loved every book from Ms. Wright that I have read. I am also happy to report that this novella did not disappoint!

First off, I loved the illustrations interspersed throughout the story. They were well placed, beautiful and compelling. In addition to that lovely enhancement, Ms. Wright created another complex, darkly imaginative world where our heroine, Brie, was trying to escape from a lifetime of slavery to the "Quiet King" as a breeding female. The details were just right for a novella, giving enough story and background to keep a reader wanting more but leaving them satisfied at the same time. I was happy with the book and wouldn't change anything but I am dying to read more about the world.

Brie was a richly complex character, who faced a great many challenges in her life, and tried to make the best of the hand she was being dealt. I was, at one point in the story, greatly disappointed in her capitulation from her moral stance but that also made her a more realistic character since none of us are perfect. Samuel was a fantastic alpha male whose sexy factor was off the charts. His confidence and arrogance were well written. The supporting characters were present enough to move the story along but did not detract the focus from the main characters.

All in all, another winner from Kenya Wright and I will be grabbing up the rest of the trilogy when I get a chance.

The concept was great. A totally original idea after all. To top it all it had illustrations! It has been a long time since I truly enjoyed a vampire themed novell. It was hot, funny and captivating.(Since I read way too many of them they all started to look same to me with little diffrences.) It was easy to read but I'm not saying that the language is weak. It was filled with adventure from the start and I must admit that I really felt the need and sexual tension between Brie and Samuel. Also it keeps you wondering non-stop so you cannot drop it from your hand. It was this well written. But it was shorter than I expected. I was expecting a bit more character info I guess. But let me hint you the writer covered that up at the next books. Since I already devoured all three of the books I think there's no need to say that I would read the other books of the series since I already gladly did. But she is definitely one of the writers that I'm going to follow from now on. I am recomending it to everyone.

Kenya Wright’s “Escape”—book 1 in “The Vampire King Series”—is an action-filled paranormal romance adventure. Wright creates a deadly vampire world where human women with rare genes become the Quiet King’s personal breeding machines, and babies born with the wrong genes are immediately slain. Her hero, Samuel, is dark, brooding, powerful, mysterious, and utterly sexy. Her heroine, Brie, is a self-sacrificing, self-denying, take charge kind of woman. Her villain, the Quiet King, is domineering, possessive, and sadistic. The sparks between the h/h fly right off the page. Readers can’t help but love Samuel and Brie…and loathe the heinous Quiet King. Wright provides readers with an intense and erotic escape…a great start to a new series.

I needed a vampire fix and this did the trick. It made a nice change to read a vamp story with bad ass vamps and not the mega rich bling wearing type. The story had blood and guts, hot sex, and an awesome hero and heroine! I liked it a lot.

Sadly not the page turner that I was hoping for. Honestly; its almost been a year since I started it and I was able to put it down and I'm not quite enamored enough to pick it back up again...sorry, not sure when I'm going to finish it. Maybe its just not my cup of tea. Please give this book a chance but don't think your the only one whose struggled to finish it.

I am a huge fan of paranormal romance; a HUGE fan. And when I was asked to review this book, I immediately said yes because it looked like something I would totally buy. And of course, there were vampires involved, why wouldn’t I read it?! While it could technically be called PNR, this was more urban fiction for me. It starts off right in the middle of the story, I mean, right in the middle. Told in first person, I get a sense of the heroine’s thoughts but not information on the problems or the world. I didn’t get much sense of her appearance either. It was almost enough to turn me off the story. Then the first illustration appeared. Yes, illustrations! This book has them every so often. They’re not colored or extremely detailed, but sketches showing you the basic description of the characters.
And it did get better. Helped of course by the hero. :) He was dark, mysterious, and dangerously sexy. He doesn’t like the heroine, and shows it; then you notice how he treats her and realize his face hides a softer side. Not too soft but you can tell he is the type to protect women. And when he admits his feelings to Brie: wow! Smoking hotness. I had no problems seeing these two together; I wanted them together despite the obstacles that were in the way.

The problem I had with this story was with the length. Total, it was 127 pages (according to Goodreads anyway) and it crams a lot in those pages. Perhaps too much. I wished there had been more grounding in the world and details explaining some of the rules. The series is called Vampire King but their was only a brief mention of him. If he is the “bad guy/dictator” you should see why he was such a bad guy. Numerous wives and such weren’t enough for me to get the bigger picture.

The shortness of it wasn’t wasn’t enough to keep me from enjoying once I got past the beginning. It really was interesting, different from other vampire stories today. I was so caught by the story, I went to see if the next book had been released. It had! The downside was, at almost $5, it is too steep for me for the number of pages. If only it were a little cheaper… Still, Escape was an interesting read. I’ve added the author (and the second book Captured) to my TBW list.

I received this book for review months before I became a part of the Vampire King blog tour, so looks like I was always destined to read Escape! It was a short, fast-paced read that I liked, but didn't necessarily love.

When I say it was fast-paced, that's what I mean. It might have been too fast for me, because I was hoping for more character development in regards to Brie's and Samuel's characters. However, I liked Brie and Sam! Brie was spunky and headstrong, and Sam was broody and mysterious. Great combo! I just wished there had been a little bit more character-building throughout the story so at the end, I felt like I really knew them.

I really liked the premise of human dominas serving the Quiet King as his personal "vampire baking centers". Thought that was pretty cool as it was a new take on the whole vampire thing that I had never really seen before. Then there was the whole bit about how male vampire babies are killed when they are born so there is no competition for the King. Also cool.

I liked how Brie's adventure started right away (always a plus), but what I didn't like *dooms day music* was the INSTA-LOVE. Insta-love always drives me crazy! I understand instant attraction and instant "I wanna do you, here and now". That actually makes sense to me, especially where vampires are concerned. But to say you LOVE someone, vamp or not, after only a few days just baffles me. I come across it so much in romance novels and each time I groan when it happens. However, I'm not saying the love isn't genuine, it's just going to take me a lot longer to believe it's real, than a love that grows naturally over a more realistic period of time.

I also wanted to see more of Sam's vampish abilities. More blood-sucking, more throats being ripped out, something! I absolutely loved the little plot twist that involves him. It's revealed toward the end of the book and when it happened I remembered asking myself, should I have seen that one coming?

Overall, quick, sexy read (with illustrations!), and I'm anxious to find out what happens next with Brie and Sam in Captured and Freed.

Review by Lover Karen

Escape by Kenya Wright is a sizzling spin in the paranormal vampire genre. This vampire erotic tale takes place on a planet with two moons where vampires rule their territories and barter for blood and concubine with the human population. The premise of the novella is that one of the bartered concubine (they are called domina) named Brie wants her freedom back. She doesn’t want to breed any children with the king. She fears bearing him male children. who under the king’s command, are killed if they are born with a specific birth mark. This birthmark identifies the male child as a prince. Prince males are feared by the Quiet King, as the vampire king is known, for he is deaf, mute and blind. Brie wants to escape to return to her husband and two daughters. Brie is an unusual human female with red hair, something which marks her as different.

She escapes the capital city with the help of a pathfinder vampire named Samuel. He is not too happy to discover that Brie is a domina, which puts a price on his group’s head for helping her. The attraction between Samuel and Brie is sizzling right from the start and sparks fly the longer they travel together.

I think that Wright starts off with good world building, because her world is totally hers; she doesn’t have to follow what is in the collective mythos of vampires. I found her character development lacking, as Brie professes to love her husband, but is too quick to jump into Samuel’s arms. She doubts her husband too quickly. Wright does a good job at setting up why Brie sacrificed herself to the Kings breeding program; but her backbone isn’t in place when it comes to Samuel. I would have enjoyed a heroine that was more feisty. As for Samuel he is just too self serving. Yes, he wants between Brie’s legs; but let me like the guy a little. Harping on the husband’s choices and planting seeds of doubt was not how to do it.

This is only the 3rd book I've read of Kenya's but she is one of those authors that I always look forward to reading her work. I save it for those Saturdays when I can really curl-up and enjoy the read. She did not disappoint. I love the way her mind works she takes the usual paranormal cast and turn them into her own playground of creativity.

Here we have The Quiet King, literally. He is deaf, blind and mute and has a harem of women with a rare blood type that is used for breeding.

In this story we follow Brie one of the dominas (that is what these women were called) that has escaped.

This story is not very long, about 120 or so pages, so I was able to read it in one sitting. It's a good story and I would love to see how it plays out. I LOVE good sex scenes (and they were some good steamy ones too) in my books but I will give just this one, itty-bitty, critique. This story had just the right amount of sex maybe one scene to many. I was just thinking that's enough for now and the story was ending. The story itself is good and I'm glad a balance was kept because I didn't want sex to take over the story.

Oh, and I almost forgot one cool thing that is new for me, sketches! I haven't seen this in any books yet that I can recall, but it was really cool to every now and again see the scenes the way the author see them.
