The Pakistani mountains of the Hindu Kush, despite the frigid winds, have protected the worst monster since the time of Alexander. Again the mountains offered shelter to a man determined to stay on a path of vengeance and hate. His group needed to be infiltrated and the most unlikely of deep-cover operatives was given the mission.
Time was far shorter than imagined.
In the hours before, his band of terrorists had successfully breached the wall at Kamra, the Pakistani airbase that held its nuclear weapons.
Will Parker — Marine, skilled linguist and steeled, combat-experienced operative — seems to have no chance of carrying off this deep-cover mission. But Parker carries more than a cover as a Bosnian Muslim and a skill at accents that rivals the greatest of linguists. The operative contains within him an unthinkable weapon, put into play by a man desperate to do anything to protect the country he serves. Parker will invade a terror cell, walk close to death and even endanger the woman who loves him. But as the covert operation unfolds, a mysterious group threatens his efforts even as they focus on destroying a common foe.
The action travels from New York to London, from Peshawar to the Hindu Kush, from Islamabad to Chicago, even as the danger moves closer, minute by minute, to the shores of Lake Michigan.
Failure is not an option, but success never cost so much…
When I read the synopsis of this book, I knew I had request it. This had a totally intriguing premise, and James Rollins, one of my favorite authors spoke well of the book, was what finally prompted me to start it. However, the beginning is a bit confusing, there are many characters, several things happen and it cost me to immerse myself in the story, but when I was squarely in the plot, well, things made sense and it was hard to stop reading.
It all started with an bomb at a U.S. embassy and from there the story begins to develop within and outside the country. The undercover group that will handle stop terrorists who have achieved a nuclear weapon is led by Will Parker, a Marine multilingual, experienced and knows how to handle a situation like they facing. However, he knows well the dangers they will face.
As the story unfolds and we meet all the wires hidden behind the story, the novel captures the reader with all the action and adventure, is a book full of suspense that keeps you on edge and wanting to know what else will happen but never you imagine how things will happen. It is an unpredictable story, full of twists, it's like riding a roller coaster, only without imagine what you will find at the end of the road.
A recommended reading for those seeking action and international intrigue. However, I recommend reading it on paper rather than an ebook, because it can be a little difficult to follow the thread of the story in a kindle.

With the sound of the bombing of a US Embassy in a far off country echoing around the globe, the table is set for a deep undercover operation of immense size. With terrorist plots happening both overseas and on home soil, hero Will Parker knows of the dangers he faces. Parker is a marine, with much combat experience. He is able to speak many languages, and impersonate many people. For him, deep cover is a way of life.
But has he over-stepped his boundaries this time? With nuclear weapons having been obtained by terrorists, the tight-rope Parker has to walk will endanger many lives, while the infiltration by the operatives to go into deep-cover need to be precise and finely tuned.
With the action happening all around the globe, time is short. Failure must not happen, but what will be the cost of success?
My only problem with this book was the amount of characters, and keeping track of them all. Reading it on an e-reader would probably have a lot to do with it, as I found I couldn’t flip back to check out a character when I needed to. With a paper book, it’s much easier…so I would have preferred to read this as a ‘real’ book.
But having said that, the action packed nature of this thriller kept me engrossed all the way through. It was full on, with many twists and turns.
Thanks to NetGalley for my copy to read and review.
Retribution by Andy Harp is an action packed thriller where secret operations abound. Opening with an embassy bombing, soon several terrorist plots are shown to be in the works, both international and at home. A deep cover mission is in the works to stop all the terrorist activity. In an effort to stop the terrorists, the life and health of operative Will Parker is at an even greater risk than would normally be taken.
Retribution can favorably be compared to Tom Clancy novels. There are a lot of characters and the action and various terrorist plots culminate in nail biting suspense as they all try to work as fast as possible before the ultimate deadline. Harp knows his stuff, which lends authenticity to the action. Using planes as weapons is as frightening as it is now a part of our reality.
Some of the issues I had with Retribution are due to the format I read it in. I think this may be one of those books that would work better as a paperback where you can flip back to keep track of the characters. I find that much more difficult to do with an e-reader. But, that said, Retribution was the sort of sheer adrenaline-junkie suspense that is so much fun to read just for escapism when you are on a vacation.
highly recommended for those seeking action/adventure escapism
