The world as it had been ended in less than a day. An ancient evil that had been relegated to the most ancient of myths and legends has returned. The dead rose to consume the flesh of the living and only the lucky and the strong were able to survive the initial onslaught. Three groups of survivors must come together and unite against an army of the dead lead by a dark priest and his human followers who are looking to find the key to opening the barriers between worlds and turn the Earth into a true realm of the dead.
Liam Harrison is a former Special Forces soldier and current spook for the NSA. As the dead rise he races to warn his estranged family and save as many people sheltered at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as he can before the dead breach the barriers and turn the temporary refuge into an abattoir.

When the dead rose he found himself trapped at his place of employment with friends and enemies alike. Even if he and his best friend manage to escape the tightening noose of the dead surrounding the store they will still need to locate those they love and find some place, any place that is safe from the dead.
Dr. Lisa Sutton survived two tours in the sands of Afghanistan only to return to a position at the University of Michigan ER just in time for the dead to rise. As command and control breaks down it is up to the reserve Army Captain to take command of the situation and prepare the survivors at the school for a long trek to safety in the states upper peninsula.
Sheriff David Marshall is usually only concerned with keeping the peace in the small town of White Harbor Michigan. But when the dead rise and the town is cut off from the state and federal governments, if they even still exist, David and the council of the town are saddled with protecting the people of the county from the dead ? and the living.

A good story. The author has a good handle on where he is going with his character and story development. I feel like I know what's probably going to happen once everyone gets where they are going, but with the variety of characters, who knows what's in the mind of this father of six author.
The editing in this book is terrible. There are so many inexcusable mistakes. I will purchase and read the next book in the series. Beyond that I don't know.
I cannot recommend this book due to terrible editing. Disappointed
Shores Of The Dead: The Rising is the first book in an epic new Zombie trilogy that attempts to take the genre in a whole new, different direction and largely succeeds in doing so.
On a remote Caribbean island, a visiting eccentric Professor is not all he seems. Deep in the heart of a long forgotten cave, he attempts to manipulate his young lover and Research Assistant into waking an ancient evil but when she becomes wise to his scheme and tries to foil his plans, she is only partially successful. Before long, all across the globe, the recently dead begin to rise to feast on the living and from that moment on, it quickly becomes self evident that nothing will ever be the same again!
Dr.Lisa Sutton, working at a University E.R after leaving Afghanistan, begins to have bizarre dreams of her sister warning her that something is....coming. When the Zombies attack, she and a small group of survivors head off to find some kind of civilization still standing....
Liam Harrison, a former N.S.A Agent, is pulled half-way across the State from White River Bio-Research Centre to help find a solution to the Undead problem but is quickly abandoned as non-essential personnel. His only goal becomes to return to White River and ensure the safety of his daughter and grand-child...
Meanwhile, College student Kyle faces his own problems when he becomes trapped in a Toys-R-Us store, surrounded by Zombies...
All these separate stories quickly come together to form a single, cohesive narrative. And as the ancient evil that began all this exerts its influence, the Zombies begin to form under the control of a single, crazed leader determined to locate the one person who stands in the way of a complete and total apocalypse.
This was a great book with some really strong characters that offers a different take to your usual Zombie novel by having a supernatural cause for the undead rather than the pseudo-scientific one that has become so topical and popular in recent years. It is a brilliant introduction to a new series and really left me wanting more and I cannot wait to re-read the second book so that this time it makes a bit more sense and all begins to add up! (Yes. I'm an idiot and yes, I read these out of order!)
I really like what Josh Hilden has attempted here and think he does an excellent job of bringing new ideas to the table. It is very hard to be original in Zombie fiction nowadays but with this, Hilden has definitely nailed it!
If you are looking for something fresh, new and exciting in Zombie fiction then fear not, you have found it! Zombie fiction has never been this cool and I found this book very difficult to criticize in any single way!
What a great story. Multiple story lines that each held my attention. I never found myself saying "yeah, yeah get back to the good stuff." It was all good stuff!
The missing star is for the editing. I can usually ignore misspellings and grammar issues but misspelling words that are in bold and all caps...come on. Also, I found myself having to go back and re-read sentences because the structure was so confusing. If at first you don't get it, move a comma or rearrange some words and it will make sense.
He's a little liberal with the f-bomb and graphic with the sex stuff...just warning my friends who might pick it up based on my recommendation.
Don't give up on the book because of the editing. It's worth the extra effort to understand the author. I'm off to read the second one.
This was a bit of a frustrating read as it veers from competent and at times engrossing zombie fiction to a very poorly written and cliched effort in the blink of an eye. For the most part it's ok though and the army of the dead thing could turn either into a masterstroke or a disaster, I'm not sure yet.
But (and this is a huge but) that opening! Oh fear god that opening is one of the most poorly written and utterly ludicrous openings to any book I've read. It's so bad it actually nearly made me give up which would have been a shame. It's badly written with terrible grammar and sentence structure almost as though it was added at the last minute. Utter bilge. Good job it picked up from there and the editing got better afterwards thank god!
I started reading the book late this afternoon and found it difficult to put down. It's now night and I finished the book. A very interesting take on zombies and the supernatural. Didn't much care for the f-bombs, but that's just me. This book has you rooting for the survivors looking for a safe place, and hoping the bad guys get there due justice real quick. There are a few grammatical errors, but they take nothing away from the story. Looking forward to reading books 2 and 3.
Josh Hilden pulled no punches in this book. It is extreme zombie survival horror. There are many things in this book which could be triggers for people with issues. It is dirty, mean and painful, just like the real world. In other words, one hell of an intense ride that is worth the price of your ticket. It's a Small World, this is not. There are touches of Lovecraftian Mythos at the core of his story as well, so it appeals to me for that reason also.
This is what you expect in a zombie apocalypse story with all the typical rules that apply. The one unique feature is that the cause is due a demonic overlord that was only partially reincarnated and is seeking to finish the job via a human proxy that can control the dead.
This genre is my guilty pleasure so I’m not overly critical. The characters act logically and the storyline makes sense, which can be a failing with this type of tale. My only real issue is that the book just ends. There is no conclusion or resolution. In fact, the story was just getting started. With seven plus short books in the series, and briefly scoping them out, it looks like this is actually one or two books broken up into segments.
I was so glad when Josh offered this book for free; I immediately got it and was hooked! Very good story about different groups surviving the zombie apocalypse. Not just your average zombie story, it's full of relationships and action. Love this series, keep 'em comin'!
A riveting read. Couldn't stop turning the pages to see what happened next. The characters are well thought out and well rounded. The story seems to have a good way to go and I can't wait to get the next instalment downloaded!
this is a nicely written bok intriguing enough that I look forward to the restrictions the series. a good zombie story that makes me want to know what comes next
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First this is about a zombie apocalypse , but the author goes about it in a totally and unexpected way. In the first installment, he attempts to explain the cause of the birth of the zombies and the story takes off from there. The world/country is over run as expected, but there are several pockets of resistance that arise and survive. These pockets are not like the television version, full of victory after victory, but of normal people struggling to survive. This is what makes this story different. Ordinary people placed in extra ordinary situations trying to survive with heartaches, tragedies, and death along the way. The characters are well defined, back stories excellent, and the way the author has divided the main story up into several separate bites is excellent.
