The Shaman's Mate

Rate this book
Grand Canyon park ranger and expert tracker Jason Cloud always considered himself a good person, just not a religious one. After searching the canyon’s woods for months to find his wife’s killers and failing to do so, Jason decides he would bargain with any deity willing to help him. When an unfamiliar fellow park ranger walks up moments after his pleas for help and sets him on the right path, Jason sends his gratitude out into the universe for answering his call. The last thing he ever suspects is that the same man would return to abduct him and insist he make good on his promises. Jason is not opposed to helping the Chileaans, but it’s what they want him to do that’s the problem. With his wife barely dead, he is definitely not ready to have any sort of relationship with another woman, not even the beautiful Chileaan Shaman, who he is told is his destined mate.

Shaman Aiyanna has waited a long time for her chosen mate to be ready to join her, but she has learned to have patience about the matter. When she rejected the idea of Jason initially, the Great Mother forced her over a span of six human years to stand helpless in the portal between their dimensions and watch while Jason committed himself to a human realm mate. It had both surprised and hurt Aiyanna to see him happy with the woman, but it had also been illuminating about his character. When his human mate dies, Aiyanna finds herself grieving deeply for Jason’s pain and loss. Willing to do anything to relieve his suffering, but forbidden to intervene personally, Aiyanna is grateful when her spirit brother offers to help. The last thing she ever expected was that the tribal council would send Kiell back to retrieve Jason before the Great Mother gave Aiyanna permission to contact him. Now Jason hates her for and there is little she can do but try to find a way to release him from their destiny.

I am an active dreamer and find writing to be the best way to use my creativity. Needing to satisfy both sides of my brain, I have become a cross-genre author of contemporary, romantic comedy, fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal romances.

I feel blessed that my books appear on bestseller lists for humor, romantic comedy, space opera, and more. I crave laughter from all my readers and focus my attention on making that happen as often as possible.

I love to hear from anyone who has read my books. Each reader is a hero or heroine to me. I am inspired by you.

I cannot write a qualitative review on The Shaman's Mate and do it any measure of justice. But I can sum it up in a few simple words: UNIQUE. EXCEPTIONAL. TOUCHING.

Ms. McDonald crafted a story that was humorous, sweet, enlightening, and inspiring. It was an epic journey of decisions and choices. Cause and effect.

I really loved this story. I'm still just blown away by its simplicity and the powerful message it conveyed. Truly an unexpected gem. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who is looking for a story that is steamy, sweet, and touching (uplifting, even).

I absolutely LOVED this book! I was completely enthralled when I started reading it. I literally couldn't put it down. I loved the 'realm' created and the characters were awesome! The first characters you meet, your heart hurts for them, and you want good things for them. Multiple times throughout the book I had to stop and breathe through emotions that were reflected in my own life as things happened in the book. I thought it was even sweeter knowing the author wrote the book in memory or dedication of her daughter who passed away. I was impressed with each character as they fought through hurts, anger, and other feelings and beliefs. When each character/couple was intimate with each other, it was sweet and deep and hot, makes you long and hope for the same or similar. As Jason fights to accept his fate and move past his grief for his murdered wife, he grows, changes, and becomes the most passionate wonderful man I have read about who seems truly real. I will definitely read more of this author! An absolute 5 star read!

Jason was a sweet and faithful man but his duty to be a protector made me like the person he was. Ariyana was a great shaman for her people. She was willing to let Jason find his way to her even though she knew that his heart was still faithful to his dead wife. When they finally meet things change and the way they cone together is special. In the beginning I didn't know what to think of the story but it was a nice and powerful ending.

I am giving this book one out five stars for repetition, a poorly constructed narrative, and painful dialog. I also noticed some grammatical mistakes, and mislabeled pronouns a copy editor should have caught. I discovered all of this within the first chapter of the book. I’ve endured weakly crafted books in the past when I had a connection to the protagonist, but neither grabbed my interest. For these reasons I will not be finishing this book.

A spiritual journey.

When Jason loses his much loved wife Emily, to murdering thugs, he uses all his tracker skills to follow them and bring them to justice. But he fails. He gets so far and no further. He gives up and starts drinking himself into a stupor.
Without him knowing, he has been watched for many years from another 'realm' by a shaman, Aiyana, who has been told by the Mother that he is her soulmate. Aiyana's spirit brother takes matters into his own hands and, soon, Jason finds himself in that other 'realm'. The story covers the spiritual journey that he goes through and the way in which his basic humanity affects those around him.
It's certainly not for anyone looking for action or torrid sex.
One of the things that I liked about the book was that many questions that arise from the whole scenario are answered very quickly. There are also philosophical questions raised. Altogether an intriguing book.

Jason Cloud is left reeling after his wife's murder and prays for help in finding her killers. He doesn't know that he is being observed from an ascend realm populated by Chileaans. Jason is destined to one day become the mate to Chileaan Shaman Aiyanna. Her heart breaks over his tragic loss and suffering as she watches him from afar but is unable to intervene. His prayers are answered when Aiyanna's spirit brother comes to his aid and helps Jason track down the killers.

Aiyanna is determined to allow Jason to ascend to her at his own rate, but the tribal council has other ideas and brings Jason into their realm in order to further their Shaman's ascension. Jason must come to grips with the loss of his wife, the bond he feels with Aiyanna, and his own place in Chileaan society.

The Shaman's Mate ensnared my attention from the start. It was a wonderfully told story of loss and the strength that comes with moving forward. It is set in a paranormal world with the ascend Chileaan culture, but is also peopled with other tribes ascended from beings not of human nature. McDonald does a wonderful job writing the growth of Jason and Aiyanna's relationship.

The Shaman's Mate was a true pleasure to read and it would make a great addition to your to be read list!

National Park Ranger Jason Cloud is one of the Park Service’s top trackers, but he finds himself at a dead end when he’s tracking the men who killed his wife in a robbery until a stranger, Hania, helps him find them and bring them to justice. Later, while drinking, Jason is brought by Hania to a strange place where he meets Aiyana, the shaman of her community. What happens next blows Jason’s mind. He is told that Aiyana, and Hania her brother, are members of the Chilean tribe, and that Jason has been ordained to be the mate of Aiyana.
The Shaman’s Mate by Donna McDonald is a delightful tour through space and time with a heaping of romance thrown in that will delight both fantasy and romance fans. Word of warning, the author is quite explicit in describing the physical encounters, so if you’re offended by such things, you might want to give this book a pass. For those, though, who are not prudish, I assure you that you’ll identify with and be delighted by the author’s characters and the world that she has constructed.

Peaceful

While reading this book, I started to reconnect with my native history. I happen to be a Hopi Indian, and hearing the name of our deity used in such a loving way was beautiful. I don't know how, but this book forced me to look at my life in a different way. Even though it's fiction, I feel better for reading it. Thank you, and I sincerely hope that we'll be hearing more from Jason Cloud.

I had to put this book down a few times to read other books. It took me awhile to get into it and then for me to keep going. It is very well written and the story is very touching but it just dragged a bit for me.

The shamans mate

Well written story. Really enjoyed the struggles that Jason went through to be who he is. Seeing him change the out look of his friends by just being who he is.
