Impetuous, impulsive New Orleans belle Genevieve Marie du Prés is accustomed to getting what she wants, and she doesn't hesitate to go after it, even if that means taking a wagon train to California to retrieve her errant fiancé. She never expects he might have other plans for her.
Rio Jackson is very good at guiding eager emigrants across the prairies and mountains to the goldfields, but he's certainly not the type of man to appeal to a sophisticated lady. At least not until he's the only one who can rescue her from the trouble she's gotten herself into.
When fate throws them together, they will have to rely on each other to survive in a wilderness full of dangers, not the least of which is a desire neither of them can deny.
The girl: Genevieve Marie du Prés, is one of those gently bred New Orleans misses, but she's got more sand than most of them. For reasons that will be revealed through the story, she joined a wagon train and followed her erstwhile fiancé to California. She finds him, but he's not such a nice lad and she finds herself in quite a pickle and is dire need of rescuing.
The guy: Trail scout Rio Jackson thought he'd seen the last of Genevieve once the wagon train was safely in California, but no...he's ready for a night in the local whore-house, but finds more than he bargained for when he finds Genevieve being sold off to the highest bidder.
Well, safe for the moment, but they've got a few ticked off men on their trail and the safest place is to head east and hope they miss the snows and...there ya go - a perfect setup for some cabin loving.
My thoughts? I liked the writing (and no conversion errors to be found in my Kindle edition obtained through Kindle Unlimited), but having a couple snow bound for months on end without much to do except for making love, did leave this with a slower pace. Yes, there were dangerous things like mountain lions and bears, and while I did like seeing the pair talk about their pasts like mature adults, and I did appreciate that Genevieve had gumption and didn't snivel over a broken nail while surviving in the wild, things just slowed down to a crawl of hot sex in the cabin and nothing happening until the action switches to New Orleans. And then there was still more sex.
I understand that's what is typically expected in most romances, but it was just a bit more than I prefer in my books, YMMV. For that reason and the slower pace in the middle of the book, I'm dropping half a star to 3.5 stars overall.
