Evan Grant, a security guard in the Hunters’ prison, is anxious to prove himself with the group. A new prisoner arrives, and Evan feels an immediate attraction. The shifter is Brett, the most handsome man Evan’s ever seen, and the tortures the Hunters have put him through touch Evan’s heart. Bringing him pain medicine and food, he makes a strong connection with the handsome shifter. His attraction is overwhelming, and it becomes even more difficult when the Hunters’ scientists ask him to volunteer to mate with the shifter so they can study the bloodmatch. He agrees to the experiment only after the scientists promise nothing can go wrong, but after Evan mates with Brett, he overpowers the guards and escapes, taking Evan with him. It doesn’t take long to discover Evan’s the newest “pet” of the Mountain Wolf Pack, and Brett is his new master.

When I open one of these paranormal romances, I’m well aware of what I have in my hands: an Alpha male/omega man story, one where the top man is “over the top” and the bottom boy is faking his submissive position well knowing that there, above the clouds, the brain is lightweighted, and the real mastermind of the relationship is the one below. It’s not easy to deal with such a story, you can well fall into parody, and making it totally “bleh”. I think Shannon West is good in pushing it almost to the edge, without tumbling beyond the abyss.

Evan, the young Hunter, is so totally not scaring, that you really wonder how they could think to enroll him in the Hunters’ army; he is young, petite, cute like a bunny, actually the right bait for a big bad wolf like Brett… only that, sincerely, neither Brett seems so scaring and bad. Brett is not an Alpha of his pack, he is a gamma wolf, an enforcer; he is strong, but he has not the coolness or cleverness to be a leader, he is a very good second hand, good to follow, ready to comply. Brett has no instinct to rebel, he doesn’t feel like he is constricted if he follows the command of his Alpha; everything is good if who is in charge is someone Brett perceives as a leader, as someone who is rightly atop of him in the hierarchy. But when it comes down to personal relationship, Brett is old fashioned, his mate has to be a pet, someone Brett can cherish but also order around.

At first Even fits the bill, he is a young, naïve man, driven more by his instinct than his brain; but as soon as he is “freed” by the constricting society he is living in, as soon as he meets other “submissive” pets (submissive is ironic, since these men are all other than submissive), he realizes he has a huge power in his hands, he is the one who can lead their relationship.

This is a specific, and popular, genre, I would even say a subgenre of the paranormal romance; it’s not really realistic, it’s about playing with the “top from the bottom” theme, as I said, pushing this them almost to the limit. You can totally love it, or you can hate it, but it has to be said, there is a market for it.

Be', ne vedremo delle belle...

While the change from human to werekin that kicks off this fifth volume in the series isn't involuntary, the consequences that come with it definitely are. Evan, chosen by the Hunters to become an experiment so they can monitor and understand the chemicals set free by a mating bite, may think he knows what he is getting into with Brett, but he really has no idea. And Brett, as much as he has watched the other wolves and their human mates, still thinks that his human will be different. Be more docile and more obedient. Ha!

Evan is a security guard with the Hunters, but wants to train to fight with them. Mating with one of the captured werewolves is one way of getting there, so he agrees despite his misgivings. After all, the shifter who has been chosen for him, is very hot, and Evan is curious. He also hates how he's being tortured, and decides to help alleviate his pain as a away of getting to know him. When he finally agrees to the mating and is taken away to the werewolves' pack lands, he is stunned. His new existence is not what he expected, and he struggles with Brett's expectation that he 'obey'. So much so that he decides to put his foot down.

Brett is not the most traditional of wolves, but he definitely didn’t want a human as a mate. Not that he has a choice, and when he sneaks into the Hunter compound to get close to Evan, all he cares about is to get Evan out of there and home, where he can protect him. He does have certain expectations, and when Evan just can't seem to be obedient, Brett loses it. Many times. What he never expected is that Evan would truly reject him, and the pain is worse than he ever thought possible.

This is more than the story of Evan and Brett's fight to understand each other and come to an agreement. Some of the other couples (from previous books) also have the occasional issue, and wolf society as a whole is trying to adapt to the new situation. If you like stories where two men struggle to find a balance of power both can live with, if you enjoy reading stories about human/werewolf matings, and if you want to know how the Dark Hollow Wolf Pack is faring, you will probably enjoy this book.

I like it well enough but not was much as the 1st book The Alpha's Pet (Dark Hollow Wolf Pack #1) by Shannon West of this series.

I've picked this up for some lightweight sugar-coated-erotic-romance reading as an interlude before tackling some other heavyweight books I have lined up for later. My poor heart still needs some time to recover after it was ripped apart during my enjoyment of Want Me by Rowan McBride. I am still reeling from angst overdosing now and loving ever bit of it.

Ok as for this book, I've enjoyed the sweet tough love of possessive shifters and their mates. Nicky the alpha's pet is still as bratty and very much still a pot stirrer. Only this round he has teamed up with another equally cheeky alpha's pet Gabe. Together with the rest of the pets, they have lead the protagonist of this book Evan into a few hot soup to the dismay and frustration of Evan's wolf mate, Brett.

So yea, I had fun with all the babying and pretty satisfied with the dandying although... tad bit disappointed that

I am going to jump onto the next book of this series now ;)

Attenzione presenti scene bdsm: sottomissione/dominazione, no m-preg.

In verità no, anzi.

I have all 15 books in this series and I enjoyed it. I read the first 7 several years ago and decided to re-read them again since the entire series is out now. There is some redundancy in that each book heavily features the "mating" between the wolf and less dominant partner; however, the individual stories intertwine with a larger story that kept it overall very entertaining.

Book 15 is called "The Final Chapter" but it appears it's just the final chapter for the wolves being the main story as the author now has a new series out called "The Darker Hollow" using one of the minor characters (Mason, a Jax's little brother) and vampires/wolves but still taking place partly or mostly in the same area The Dark Hollow - 2 books are out in that series so far. I'm a little burned out so I haven't bought them and I'll wait to see how many more show up in that one, I don't like cliff hangers and I worry that this will be another long series and the overall story will be left open.

One note of caution, if you are a picky reader (and I admit that I am not but it is the reason for 4 stars), be prepared to get over quite a few inconsistencies in the stories, especially as the series grows. Some are small like the time Zack gets out of the river and "puts his clothes on" but then it's noted he was seen going into the lodge naked; in Connor/Jeremy's story they actually refer to them backwards; in one book Marco says he first saw Nicky in a restaurant but in the original and every other reference it was in a park; in one book Landry says he was not jealous being born a pet but in another it says he was... And there are some bigger inconsistencies you'll have to just get over, like Logan's Mom - in his book it says she raised him until he was 10 but that is not the story given in later books for him or for her.

This was a very good installment in the Dark Hollow wolf Pack series and my favorite book thus far.

Evan is a new security guard in the Hunter’s Prison. He believes he is doing the right thing based on the information that he has been given and the propaganda that has been thrown at him but when a new prisoner arrives and he witness the horrors that shifter goes through every day he starts to question whether he is doing the right thing or not. He finds the shifter, Brett, to be the most stunning man he has ever seen and his scent calls to him like no other. He’s never been turned on by the scent of someone before and can’t understand what is happening to him. He can’t get Brett off his mind and he risks his own life to give him extra food and medicine when he can. It isn’t long before he is approached by the Hunter’s scientists asking him to volunteer to mate with Brett so that they can study Evan’s blood following the mating. He hesitantly agrees and his life changes forever.

Brett scented his mate at the Hunter’s compound while on a rescue mission for Logan in a prior installment of this series. He hates Hunters and doesn’t really care for humans very much either but the mating pull has him and he can’t stay away. He allows himself to be captured by the Hunters so that he can get inside the compound and near his mate. He is touched by the care and consideration Evan shows him and doesn’t hesitate to mate with him and then he escapes taking Evan with him back to his pack.

When the men arrive back with Brett’s pack, there is some push/pull as far as Evan settling in as a ‘pet’. I am very happy that the status of a pet has changed dramatically from the first couple of books. The pets have more autonomy and the rigid restrictions regarding collaring and leashing have eased and the pets are happier. I am pleased to say that this installment was much longer than the others and it only improved the story. The relationship between Brett and Evan is more fully developed and we were able to visit the protagonists from the previous books. The story flowed well and there was a decent amount of action by way of a confrontation between the Pack and the Hunter’s. I am extremely happy that there was a resolution to an ongoing storyline regarding Logan’s father.

I enjoyed this story very much and I would recommend it to all Shifter lovers.

I enjoyed this one o.k. It was a little longer but I felt somewhat like the length didn't help. There is still the same formula - but it is one I like so I'm not complaining. I did enjoy the MC's here but it was a little too dramatic at times. Brett really was a total ass - I mean of course you know it's a romance so in the end it all gets fixed (that's not a spoiler!) but I felt like it was a little too much at times. I did like how the evolution of how the pets are treated is really occurring and that change is coming. I have liked the series so far - in great part based on how things change and the effects it has when they do. I must say that, flatly, I am getting tired of the childish antics of Nicky and Co. though - they are entirely too bratty. Part of me wants to tell them if they'd stop acting like childish prats they wouldn't get treated like them! Ha!

My opinion on this whole series can be found in the first book's review. That opinion applies to this book and I saw no point in saying the same thing over and over for the next 6 books.

Summary: Enjoyable story but disturbing themes that is potentially offensive to some readers.

This story was weird from the start. Brett's one of the wolves who aren't quite ready to accept the changes the "new pets" are introducing to this pack's way of life.

Evan and Brett aren't quite as memorable as the previous couples.

Book 5 in the series has Evan, a Hunter who is encouraged to be an experiment to make stronger soldiers paired with Brett, a wolf who isn't looking for a mate, espescially not a human one.
Brett is a jerk and it takes a helluva long time for him to not be so overbearing. Evan is not willing to be the submissive little pet his mate wants him to be...fireworks!
I still love Shannon West's writing and can't wait to get stuck into book 6.

Another great story in this series. This one offers lots of twists and turns as we return to the main pack. Things from the other stories continue to fuse together in the battle against the Hunters. The pets also continue to establish their place in the back. I was so excited to read that there will be more to this series.

I absolutely loved how psychotic Brett was in his jealousy. I had no problems with the babying, the possessiveness and everything else that came with Brett. I just didn't like how everyone over reacted in that one scene causing Brett to be captured and tortured. I only wanted the ending longer and more detailed knotting going on.

Exact same review as the previous book in this series…
Good plot & story line but seems thrown together. Story needed more development & the characters seemed to bounce around emotionally. Wish the author would have spent more time with it so this could have been an awesome series.

It was okay. Would I have liked more substance? Yes. But. It wasn't horrible. It doesn't make me want to read the rest of the series.
