This is the novel which established Vimal series - one of the greatest and most successful fiction series ever. Reportedly more than 25 lakh copies of this novel has been sold since it was first published in the year 1977....through 15 reprints and one translation - unprecedented for a pulp fiction in India.

This novel has two characters who later played important roles in Vimal's life ......one is Neelam and the other is Mayaram Bawa. And who can forget Labh Singh "Mattar Paneer".

It is a MUST READ for the lovers of crime fictions and has tremendous repeat value.....I have read 3 times in Hindi and read the English translation once.

Go, grab your copy at the earliest.

A classy novel of the well known - Vimal Series.

Explores the early life of protagonist Vimal where he is compelled to be a part of a heist which will make him richer of 65 Lakhs INR.

The book is so popular in hindi that even after many decades - when it was first published - the reprints are still in demand.

One of the best reads.

Grab it.

I'm learning Hindi as a second language. As a learner, I found this to be an enjoyable read and would say it is at about the intermediate level. I read an article about this book and always wanted to try reading it in the original language. I have had some difficulty finding reading material at the right level. I have read the Harry Potter books in Hindi translation (a great first step into reading longer works in Hindi) and found this to be near the same level of difficulty. Some slang, but not too bad to follow. Before this I tried an Agatha Christie novel in translation, but found this one easier. Probably because it is more action and dialogue-driven - and honestly, a lot more fun to read anyway.

I picked this particular book because there is also an English translation available. I thought I would read it along with the original. Thus, this would be a great way to get into ore of this author's works - in fact, I have a few others on my shelf. However, I ditched the English translation pretty quick - it was not literal enough to be very useful. That is, a lot of the difficult words or passages were not translated anyway (just left-out), so I stopped using it. It is not a bad translation, just surprisingly not very useful to read side-by-side with the original.

इस संस्करण में उपन्यास पैंसठ लाख की डकेती के इलावा पाठक जी कि कहानी मौत का विलाप भी शामिल थी। दोनों ही रचनायें काफी रोमांचक थी। पढ़कर मज़ा आ गया। मेरे पूरे विचार आप नीचे दिए लिंक पर जाकर पढ़ सकते हैं :

NO SPOILERS. READ WITHOUT WORRIES.

What a marvellous work! Do not make the mistake of dismissing this novel as a lowly pulp fiction. I consider it as one of the finest crime novels in Hindi. Surendra Mohan Pathak is a master at his craft. The story set up, and the plot twists are just amazing. The story is fast paced and unpredictable which makes this novel simply unputdownable. The story is set up in the Punjab of late 70s, and for the ones reading it today will get an experience of reading a period crime drama. If you are familiar with Hindi, pick up the original Hindi version rather than the English translation. Surendra Mohan Pathak uses a lovely blend of Punjabi and Hindi, which cannot be replicated in English. Since this is a crime novel, do not read anything about this novel on the internet as you might come across a number of spoilers. Take my recommendation and pick up this one without much ado!

The most recognised, well-known and famous book of the author was worth the hipe. The ebook version I read had a author's note stating that how far fetched the relation between the amount of the robbery and the safety measures for preserving it can seem if read in recent times. So he advices us to enjoy the story and don't let the amount spoil the whole experience and how's it not possible to change the amount now because it being a part of the series.
And that actually helped me to enjoy the story more and overlook some outdated pins and points.
4 read and 40 yet to come.
I definately recommend it.

एक बार फिर पाठक जी के सम्मोहित कर देने वाले लेखन ने पता ही नहीं लगने दिया कि किताब कब खत्म हो गई। मेरी एकमात्र शिकायत ही यह है कि यह बहुत जल्दी समाप्त हो गई।
क्लाइमैक्स थोड़ा अधिक विस्तृत होता तो और बेहतर होता। पर चूंकि विमल सीरीज काफी लंबी है तो मुझे इससे ज्यादा शिकायत नहीं।

Painsath Lakh Ki Dakaiti is by far one of the best thriller novels I've ever read, featuring Sardar Sohal Singh alias Vimal. By way of background: this book is one of the most popular novels of Surendra Mohan Pathak, selling over 2.5 million copies since it was first published in 1977.

The protagonist Vimal, a history sheeter on the run from the police, is working as the driver of a rich man. His desire to leave behind his troubled past and live a normal life falls to pieces when he is identified by a group of gangsters, who blackmail him into supporting them in their plan to burgle a bank in Jalandhar.

The planned heist goes perfectly to plan, until misfortune strikes. One of the gang members falls with a huge thud while they cross over from one building to another on a ladder. The robbery is instantly detected and in an instant it becomes every man to himself.

To makes things worse, Mayaram Bawa- veteran criminal and the mastermind of the conspiracy, who intends this heist to be the last act of his 'career'- intends to keep the money all for himself. Can Vimal thwart Bawa's sinister intentions? Will the law finally catch up with him or will fortune finally swing his way?

Painsath Lakh Ki Dakaiti is a page turner, keeping the reader on the edge of the seat from first to last. This book is also available in an English translation titled the 65 Lakh Heist (disclaimer: I haven't read the translation). It beggars belief that a first rate thriller like this novel has never been adapted into a movie.

One of my favourite novels of SMP. Apart from the maze of a plot that is weaved, this novel also had surprising pathos. I read it a long time back and still remember it. This was one of the books which elevated SMP to the top tier of Hindi pulp novelists.

I also wonder why nobody is coming up with eBook versions of SMP books. I would pay money to own his novels and read them again. Unfortunately, Hindi pulp books have very poor print quality and binding. Very difficult (and not worthwhile) to own physical copies. Somebody should come up with ePub versions soon.

Edge of the seat adventure. The heist itself is worth the whole book but the real plus is that this is the book where you get to meet the unforgettable NEELAM for the first time.
