A rare 5 star romance!

Shane recently had a traumatic experience and has to deal with a few unsettling self-realizations. Now starting as a college student she enters a new fase of her life as she slowly discovers who she is, who she wants to become and who she would like to spend her life with.

I am so glad I picked this up. Rewind is one of those rare stand-alone romance novels that don't stop with the almighty "I love you", but continue after the point most novels mark their HEA-moment. Seeing Shane and Veronica slowly build their relationship is nice, but then actually following them beyond is fantastic. Ohh and then the ending, that was just handled perfectly and tied the whole novel back to where it started in chapter 1.

Now though I also have to add a note of warning. Not really a big one, but leaving it out might do a disservice to some readers. This differently is a romance for a mature audience and features some explicit scenes and elements of Kink. Nothing bad, nothing extreme, but it is there and in my opinion done quit well.

Having said that, would I recommend this novel to others? Yes I would!

I loved this book. I don't write many reviews but this book was beautiful. I loved the way she portrayed the characters and in the end I cried like a baby but was so happy that everything turned out just right. It was a perfect happy ending for Shane and Roni. This I must say is by far the best book written by this author and even if you get a little squirmy with the bdsm aspects it was still a beautiful, well written love story.

Really sweet story

I really liked this one and thought the author really brought the characters to life. Only thing I don't like is the ending. The way it ends has you wondering about the future

Now, that was a weird ending. I loved the slight change at the age-gap. I loved the communication skills, though when I realised the book was a full novel, I was rather disappointed that there was no more of the parties with Wendy and Victoria, they seemed funny. Even Jeremy and his man. Bob and his friend too. It was a good casting.

When Shane's parents came through, that was sweet.

SPOILER

Veronica is older than Shane but the spirit in Shane's body is older than Veronica, which means Shane is older than Veronica... I liked that weirdness.

First of: This is one of the best standalone books i have ever read. Also one of the only books i would really give 5 stars to (Goodreads does not let me give other things i like 4,5 stars).
However, this is more due to me liking its style and execution, rather than it being unique in its ideas. It might not be for everyone, but i quite liked it.

Feel free to ignore what is written in the brackets, as those are my own personal thoughts on the matter, rather than more objective statements about the novel.

Story and Pacing: 4 Stars

I will keep this short and no spoilers. The pacing of this book was pretty great, especially with the longish set-up. There was never really a feeling of events being rushed or the characters just blindly accepting something. The romance was really sweet and felt genuine. What is also great about this book is the lack of unnecessary or contrived drama. Sure there is some drama, but it does not feel engineered. The areas outside the romance feel solid, but feel a bit lacking after the romance gets going. That, and the story not being that unique only gets it 4 stars from me.

Characters: 4 Stars

Again not that much to say here, without getting into spoilers. The MC is great and likeable.
(Despite her being a woman, even as a guy i can relate (somewhat) to her and what she is thinking/feeling in a situation). Her lovley other half is also quite charming. She is however not the deepest character, which is entirely ok and makes sense in this story (i can maybe relate more to her personality than that of the MC, but to each their own). Her personality is rather quiet and more focused on her partner, rather than being really extroverted and defines herself on rather few things. Those traits combined make their private life more interesting, as they make light BDSM look really intimate, rather than degrading for one partner. (I really do not like it, when an author feels the need to make one partner degrade the other with namecalling and such. While that may be what some people are into, i think this is a more realistic approach to what people/partners may enjoy to do for an entire life together.)
The author manages to create a really realistic, ok maybe not necessarily in how they meet, and cozy chemistry between both of them.
The entire rest of the characters start out pretty strong, but again they stop to develop for the most part after the romance really gets going. Not sure if more in that department is too much to put into one book or might take away from the romance. Still, that gets it only a 4 Star rating.

Style and Grammar: 5 Stars

This is what makes this book a really good read: Presentation. All details of the romance and events for the MC are fleshed out and feel like they are painted in lively colors. Both the MC and the romance evolve over time and keep the book exiting. The author also manages the create a romance and feelings without resorting to all that many tropes or showing a crass contrast. Meaning, that the interaction and emotions portrayed feel more realistic and standing on their own. ( Just to get the thing out there, that annoys me the most in some other romance novels - the old partner is an asshole. Especially if the ex or not so ex partner is a guy, although that is only the icing for me in most cases. The need to contrast a beginning relationship with a really bad one, meaning really bad not just not having real feelings for the partner, just seems to take away from the rest - RANT END)
Not much else to say, it is really really good and well written. This justifies the entire 5 Star rating for me.

I liked this book for a lot of reasons.

*****SPOILERS BELOW: DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW DETAILS OF THE STORY****************************************************************

#1. It was a super fast read
#2. It was interesting
#3. It kept me entertained
#4. It was like the lesbian version of a more appropriate and consensual fifty shades situation

This story combined a whole lot of elements and I found that interesting. The writing was very simple but that wasn't really horrible for me. As long as I can picture something playing out like a movie I'm okay with things being simplified.

It did come across like a book that someone wrote quickly with very little editing and just published on the internet without much in the way of a middle man or anything like that.

With that in mind it was very together for what it was. There was a clear beginning middle and end and the momentum kept up until the finish.

I didn't much care for the half of plot that involved someone dying and someone being saved and then the ending in and of itself was completely unnecessary and read off like an epilogue.

What I loved was the meat of the story, the very middle. That's not to say that the beginning and the end are not worth reading or anything like that. I just find them completely unnecessary. This book could've easily started up with Shane at college and run until the writing choice and the family bonding and that could've been the end and it also would've been sweet and perfect.

To be able to call a story that involves bdsm sweet means that the author has done something very very right here with this novel and that's why I have to give this a 4 star.

This story was very quirky. It was easy to tell that the author was a lot older than the characters she was writing. Oddly enough though my biggest gripe in that regard is that one of the characters kept on saying "cheeky girl." Like, what the hell is that? Why? Why did that happen like 73 times? It happened waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much and it made pretty much no sense. I might understand if that character was supposed to be a senior citizen or something like that. That character was supposed to be 34 so that reeeeeeeeally through me and annoyed me.

At first I was pretty against the whole secretary thing happening but after a while I decided that given the characters it was kind of cute. The movie The Secretary will always have a soft spot with me because it's also something I consider "sweet" that involves bdsm.

There is so much margin for error with the topic that anytime I see it done right I'm impressed and happy about it.

But yea this was just a super quick and easy read that I won't soon be forgetting.

This was one of those novels that pleasantly surprised me. I love that the only interaction we haven between Shane and God is at the end and beginning only and I love that God comes in the form of a woman. It's different than the usual stereotypical God. I also give it a 5-star rating (I don't do that often) because I was so in love with both characters and at the end (without spoiling it) it actually became a 5-star because it was such a nice, heartfelt ending. It was consistent and evenly paced throughout the story, it stayed between a 4.5 and full 5-stars even before the ending.
The feeling that that ending leaves me: Love, True Love from that of a soulmate, is undying, and an eternal flame that never leaves us. They are always there, even if we feel physically alone, and watching over us.
Wow is all I could say after I was done wiping the tears from my eyes.

Edit: Upon a lot of reflection, I'll move my rating down from 3 stars to 2, since I've read enough romance books by now to see the glaring issues with this one, especially that it just... wasn't that good.

The blurb of this book is so vague that I was expecting something entirely different when I picked this book off of the kindle unlimited shelf. A simple romance with some emotional moments (given the trauma part). Boy, was I wrong.

This book is almost the entire life story of Shane, starting at the age of 19. And be prepared for a really slow start. Like, for the first quarter of the book, we are literally just following Shane around as she is trying to figure herself out (and have a questionable scene happening as well that I thought was borderline sexual assault, but maybe that’s just me). There were times when I felt that we were following her around a bit too much and maybe could have skipped some parts, it just dragged a bit too much for my tastes.

Another thing that bothered me a bit was the insta-love trope, though saying insta-love isn’t doing it justice. It was rather insta-everything. A bit too much for me, but at least the later part of the romance sort of made up for it.

The characters were well done, though the only one we really get to know inside an out is Shane, given the first person POV. Luckily she was really well written which wasn’t an easy thing to do given her complexity, but the author handled it perfectly.

Last we have the story which was at least unique enough to push me to keep on reading and I loved the sort of fourth wall breaking thing. You’ll know what I’m talking about if you’ve read the book. :)

In any case, it was okay. Some scenes didn’t quite sit well with me and sometimes the story was just a tad bit too dragged out for my liking, but it was still an enjoyable read. Not a book for the faint hearted though, the spice level is strong with this one!

I skimmed a lot of this. Some parts felt rushed and glossed over, others drawn out and boring. I often found myself thinking "get to the point, already!" during character conversations. Overuse of names in conversations between characters is irritating and hard to overlook once noticed.
Instant love has never been something I've enjoyed. The drama/angst is forced and unrealistic in my opinion. A bit of editing would have gone a LONG way, also.
If you're familiar with the author, the characters are cookie-cutter and quite recognisable from other works.

The reason I give 2 stars instead of 1 is because I love the premise and liked the ending. There is a good story in here somewhere and perhaps this author's style is just not for me.

Interesting premise and a tearjerker ending, but the writer didn't really run with it and just slapped some smut in between the two. The characters got together waaaaay too fast, and there was one problematic scene (if you've read it, you'll know which one). Not a bad read, but not the best I've ever read either.

4.5*

I can't even begin to describe how amazing this book is. I have never cried when reading a book before, but this one did it - for all the right reasons of course. I genuinely cannot recommend this book enough. It was the first book I've read by this author and I'm very happy I took the leap. Just well done. Honestly, if you haven't read it yet - and like me - are reading the reviews to get a feel of the book..then by all means, go ahead and read it. It does not disappoint.

3.5-4. It feels a little rough with some story-decisions. A cathartic moment is replaced with a little cop-out "all is well"-diversion. The punishment-scenes involve inserted ice-cubes, which feels like a health-hazard and one scenes feels trouble-some regards consent, safewording and conflict-resolution.

Otherwise this is an endearing life-story about a second chance and the impact of a life, which ends on a very somber note. This may be not for everyone.

I like it, it's a really good story, different from everything I ever read.
But I don't know, the ending got me a little depressed.
Also, I don't believe in any gods, so it was kind of weird, but I got it, and I found really amazing how they address to god.
Anyway, I'm still a little depressed, but I enjoyed the reading.

INSTA everything

The beginning was quite odd, everything else progressed so quickly. There was insta-everything. The MC went to a party of people she just met a DAY ago, met someone and instantly felt they were in love. Her lover went to meet her friends not even 24 hours after the MCs first met. Like what? ...

Frustrating entertainment

The story had a unique start that drew my attention immediately, but then slowed to a crawl for a bit. I almost walked away. I’m glad I stayed with it. Entertaining story, but it needs a good edit.

Rewind, this book makes me rethink my self exploring about sexualty and bdsm. Following Shane to explore hers is warm and touching, I found myself crying from the inside a few times. It is a lovely story. And the God part is a fine touch, I love it!
