Generally before I review a comic series in one of these overview style reviews, I will read the entire comic right beforehand because I want my memory as fresh as possible.
As a disclaimer, my mileage on comics tends to be excellent. I can bust through 20 volumes of a series in 1-3 days generally and have read through some bad comics.
This series, however, I got about 60% done with it and couldn't make myself finish.
It's important to have the context, firstly, that Han Yu-rang comics are much in the same vein as Hwang Mi-ri comics: it's an umbrella name for multiple ghost authors/artist so a publisher can create large amounts of content. This means varying degrees of quality; some end up really great, others are clearly there to make a quick buck.
Forbidden Kiss is one comic that very much is on the lower end of the Han Yu-rang quality spectrum.
The basis premise is that Haeun, a high schooler of maybe 18, has an attractive, popular step brother a year younger, named Shin, who mistreats her and generally causes her lots of grief. Haeun thinks it's because Shin outright hates her, but we find out that's he's rude and antagonistic towards her because he's actually been in love with her since they first met five years prior and is unhappy that they're "family" and thus cannot be together.
However, when Haeun starts to reconnect with an older guy she had a crush on as a child and is pursued by Shihu, a wealthy hotel heir who is completely taken with Haeun, Shin is motivated to be more open about his feelings, causing a conflict with Haeun, who is repelled by the taboo of their "sibling romance" and knows it would affect their parents, who are quite happy together.
As one can expect, Haeun eventually relents and accepts Shin's feelings, only for Bora, a jealous and conniving girl who likes Shin, to constantly try interfering by any means necessary. Cue romantic tensions, cue incest taboo scandals, cue a fake death, cue lots of unrealistic story beats, cue happy ending.
While I applaud that the author made the sibling romance angle tolerable (i.e. neither person thinks of the other as a blood relative nor do they really have any closeness of a family relationship), the overall story was very poorly developed and executed.
Plots move stupid fast, characterizations are inconsistent, events unfold in unrealistic and overly dramatic ways, the overall tone is very weird because on one hand it's immature as heck but then there's ample violence and mature themes like gangs and kidnapping and assault and teenagers smoking/drinking... overall, it's not great.
Also, like, Shin just becomes a singer and a model. As if any teenager is just that hot and talented that they're plucked off the streets and made a superstar, especially when that teenager drinks and smokes pretty heavily.
Now, as an additional clarification, I read scans of the series that were not the best quality and I'm sure there was room for some areas to be missing or some translations to not be amazing, so I'm sure that didn't help at all, but I don't think especially clean scans and edited translations would have made this series any good, just a little easier to fully read, perhaps?
Either way, I'd skip this series. There are better Han Yu-rang and Hwang Mi-ri titles. Check out something like Crazy Girl Shin Bia Volume 1 instead.
This manhwa, Forbidden Kiss, is about a high school girl Haeun who accidentally falls in love with her brother, Shin. Now, don't worry, this isn't incest. This happens to be her step-brother. Their parents got married and at first Haeun treated him normally like a regular brother sister relationship. However, he treated her coldly and shook away at every step of kindness that she showed. He was even in a gang but acted like an angel at home. So, she began to despise him. One day, she got into an accident and the guy, Shi-Ho, happened to be a rude person who said she either had to pay a lot or be his maid. She, like any other person, chose to be a maid. Now, Shi-Ho happens to like her a lot and is asking her hand in marriage(even though they're so young). But, it turns out that her step-brother actually likes her...a bit too much. Once, Shin begins to display his love to her, she begins to like him romantically as well and a forbidden relationship sprouts. With this, Haeun loves Shin but can't have a normal relationship and is loved by Shi-Ho but unfortunately can't return his feelings.
Very nice story so far; has an interesting plot and very nicely structured.
Forbidden kiss, is basically forbidden love between someone close to you not like a friend. Something like family. A teenage girl always gets punished by her younger brother and is always at fault (in my opinion). I didn't expect this to be a bit incest.. even though the two siblings aren't blood related it got me thinking. Couldn't those two be dating? It's just like two other books, I've read so far.
Forbidden Kiss is a great book. Shows the feelings of both lovers. How the girl gets in trouble and turns out to be a lover to some teenage guy, who she mistaken as College student.

I can't believe I hadn't added this! Or maybe it just wasn't in here when I read it. Super addictive series about "siblings" that fall for eachother. I won't ever be finishing this one, but I heard it is a bittersweet ending anyway.
