Newt Gingrich is well-known as the architect of the “Contract with America” that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in forty years. After he was elected Speaker, he disrupted the status quo by moving power out of Washington and back to the American people. Under his leadership, Congress passed welfare reform, the first balanced budget in a generation, and the first tax cut in sixteen years. In addition, the Congress restored funding to strengthen defense and intelligence capabilities, an action later lauded by the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.

Today Newt Gingrich is a Fox News contributor. He is a Senior Advisor at Dentons, the world’s largest law firm with more than 6,500 lawyers in 50 countries and offices in more than 125 cities. 4.5 stars. Let me begin by saying that Newt Gingrich is my favorite current political figure and so my review of this book definitely comes from the standpoint of someone who is "drinking the kool-aid" so to speak. I agree with many (though not all) of Newt's ideas and so he had a very friendly audience in me. That said, I thought this was an excellent book that outlines a number of very promising ideas that are worth considering from taxes, to social security, to the judiciary, to education reform and Health care.

I do have one significant gripe with the book and it is one that I find in almost every "political" book that I come across (both conservative and liberal). Even as a conservative, I really dislike the negative rhetoric/attacks about "liberals" and "democrats" because I think it infuses the legitimate argument/position with too much "noise" and makes people you are trying to persuade tune out because they feel like they are being attacked. It also, in my opinion, raises the question of whether the argument itself is compelling enough if it needs to be supported by attacking the other side. It was not as bad in this book as it has been in some others (probably because the "ideas" were enough to carry the message) but I still feel compelled to call it out.

That said, loved the book, loved many of the ideas and think it a worthy addition to the political dialogue moving forward.

This book talks about a wide varity of political issues concerning America today and some conservative solutions to them.
It is quite interesting how it seems like America is very evenly divided. But if you take a close look, America agrees on many issues. The majority of Americans don't support seperation of church and states, support making the english language the American language, think social security is broken, support a flat tax, support drilling offshore, and support nuclear energy. Clearly, America is a conservative country and if we just open our eyes and look around us, we would realize our similarities and get things done.

Newt is someone who looks at a situation and can see something is wrong and then he figures out how to fix it. He is a real problem solver. You might not agree with everything he says, but you should be able to he is right about the problems in our country and Washington. I think he has good ideas. So many politicians do things not to fix things and make our country better, but to please the groups that give them money. Even when the politicians are trying to be compassionate, they need to be judged on results not their intentions.

Best political book I've read so far. Rather than just bashing on the democrats, offers real ideas and backs them up with research to support the solutions and that the American public supports the ideas. Really shows why he was able to engineer the republican takeover of congress, why the republicans are in the position that they are now and what needs to happen for the republican party and intelligent caring democrats as well.

Twenty years ago, I would have never thought that I would live to see the day when I would think that Newt Gingrich had anything interesting to say. HA. I am glad that I have grown up. This is a really great read and I wish that everyone in D.C. was required to read it. As the books shows, not all problems that need to be solved have to be politically divisive. I would classify it as "moderate-right" in its political leanings, but there are good ideas in here regardless of your "Party".

I flew through this book. It is the first book in a long time where I went back the following day and wrote notes. There are many interesting topics and entries in this book that I do not want to forget. Especially the constant references to great leadership in the first half of the book. I highly recommend this book to both conservatives and liberals. I would love to see Newt on the Republican ticket in 2012.

A good read. This book states much of the material that Newt Gingrich has covered in his speeches and in the presentations on American Solutions. For those who are not aware of what American Solutions is this book is a good primer. This book also focuses on what it will take to save America: Real Change. Mr. Gingrich does not advocate changing the ideas and principles our country was founded on, but on the policies for implementing those ideas and principles. It is the policies and the resulting bureaucracies that need to be overhauled, not merely band-aided. Especially worth reading on the chapters on the inabilities of the parties to change as they currently are and on the failures in Iraq.

The statistics quoted throughout the book made a big impression on me. If we listen to the media, we believe that we are a hopelessly divided country. Yet the polling done by Gingrich's organization shows that on almost all of the major issues facing the nation today, there is consensus, often 70%-80% or more agreement. We should be solving the problems we agree on and get the government working.

Tons of great statistics in this book, most of which I found myself surprised by. Newt talks at length about the problems facing America today and how he believes we should best approach those problems. In my opinion he delivers a fairly balanced set of ideas, too bad no one appears to be listening....

This book is a must for any ignorant citizen who has no substantial knowledge to the way government impacts our society and culture and country. This man has so much knowledge and insight...it is amazing. It is so refreshing to read someone speak about current events and correlate the effects and history of how big government handles our lives...as well as what those things mean for the future.

Another airport book for the political season. I don't always agree with his prescription (tax incentives for everything?), but his common sense look at some of our political system's failings, especially education and NASA, are eye opening and should make us wonder about campaign promises.
