"Ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, in this very ring, the forces of good take on the creatures of darkness in a match for the ages. The hopes and fears of mankind will pit their wits against one another in blur of flesh and blood and, when the final bell rings, there can be only one winner!"
Cruentus Libri Press brings you sixteen tales of horror and the macabre set in the world of professional wrestling, where evil is dispatched, not by crucifixes and holy water, but by clotheslines and hammerlocks.
Between 2009 and 2017 Kevin G. Bufton wrote a total of sixty-nine short stories, which appeared in anthologies, magazines, and websites the world over.
Since 2017, he has chosen not to write any more fiction, content to columns and book reviews for his website.
He lives in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, with his wife and their two children, where he writes his darkest fiction whilst wearing his brightest shirts.
You may think that i am biased because i contributed a story to this anthology, but i assure you, i am not. In fact, i'm not even going to mention myself! i just want to tell you about all the other great writers who contributed to the book. Ed Ferrara's GIG MARKS is a terrific example of classic horror and a little behind the scenes of the wrestling game. i enjoyed the mysterious "Kid" immensely! Terry Alexander weaves an exciting tale of the future, with zombies and the group that loves them in "ZOMBIE NIGHT MAYHEM". i loved Patrick MacAdoo's "LUCHA LOBO". i loved Jack Hammer's problems. This story left me wanting more! Frank Larnerd's "BO WULF" is a little piece of Appalachia and very fun. "NO SOUL'S BARRED" By: James Gardner was great. i enjoyed the character of Father Dan. Andrew G. Dombalagian's "THE LEGEND OF THE SILENT CLAW" was, in my opinion, the most original of the group. It was very weird...in a good way! "FIGHT TO THE DEATH" By: Jody Neil Ruth was very romantic, in a zombie sort of way! i enjoyed this story very much, and i don't even like zombies! Paco's "FAMILY REUNION AT THE FLYING CIRCUS" was enjoyable. I liked the transcendence of the protagonist the most. Our Editor, Kevin G. Bufton, penned "THE SHOOT". i thought the mystery was inspired! And i promise i'm not buttering you up, Dear Editor! My story was next. You can judge it for yourself! Travis I. Sivart's "THE SHOW MUST GO ON", was visceral. The description's were sharp. This story was also very original. "WRESTLING GATORS" By Steven Gepp was really fun. i enjoyed the tribulations of a wrestler with principles. "THE MEMORY HOLE" By: S. Carter Eberly, is my personal favorite. i LOVED this story. The story was well constructed and it really touched me. Yes, i know this is a wrestling/horror anthology, but it almost made me cry. It was that good! Kerry G.S. Lipp's "BLOODLUST" was a tale of the wrestling fan. Very exciting in a psychologically horrific sort of way. "IMPOSTOR" By: Jay Wilburn, was really interesting. i enjoyed his view of the world with zombies. Reminded me of '80's SCI-FI, which i thoroughly enjoy. "DOMINION" By: J.T. Wilson was just as much a social commentary as a horror story. It expressed the bleakness and hopelessness of true horror. The quality of stories in this book is tremendous. i really enjoyed it! i think you will to. Give this little wrestling/horror anthology a chance. You'll be surprised!
"Lucha Gore" is a horror anthology based around pro wrestling as a theme. This collaboration is packed with sixteen stories sure to please horror and wrestling fans alike. I'll highlight my favorites from this collection but rest assure all the stories are worth the price of admission.
Gig Marks by Ed Ferrara
A veteran wrestler is haunted by mistake from his past that cause the death of a rookie looking for guidance. Mr. Ferrara's short delves into the unfortunate aspect of professional wrestling; injuries and death. In 'Gig Marks' the main character is stalked by "The Kid", an avenging spirit from the past seeking revenge.
The main character knows that his time is short and eventually he faces up to his past mistake.
'Gig Marks' is a fun haunting read that I enjoyed thoroughly.
Zombie Night Mayhem by Terry Alexander
The zombie apocalypse ravages society but as a species we fought back. Now zombies are used as a form of entertainment and Derrick McKnight is about to take it to another level.
One night, two rings, three wrestlers, and a shit load of zombies. The survivors will split ten million dollars. Mr. Mcknight allows viewers to bet on who will survive and get the most kills as well. Everything is set for showtime but The Zombie Coalition will not stand by as harmless zombies are abused.
I found 'Zombie Night Mayhem' to be a fun read with a mix of action and gore.
Overall 'Lucha Gore: Scares from the Squared Cirle' was fun to read especially since it combines two of my favorite things; horror and wrestling.
If you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you'll like
Neil Gaiman has a very good summary of all reviews of collections of short stories. "They all say, 'made enjoyable by [the strong stories] and held back by [the weak stories]', but nobody can agree on which are which."
The stories in this collection range wildly in quality, from entertaining to unfortunate, although as often as not it could be the poor editing and proofing that is making stories seem weaker than the author intended they might be. If you like supernatural horror, and pro wrestling, then this mash-up will probably entertain you.
