This is a book every Canadian should read. It has its flaws, but it is fun story.

The cover says "based on the screenplay by Paul Gross and John Krizanc." Every time I picked it up, I heard The Tragically Hip's song "Poets" playing in my head. In the movie one of the curlers flew on his butt to this song This book was just as fun as the movie and even had a few extra parts.

I enjoyed all the curling talk which is hard to come by in books. But what I did not like was the majority of the characters. Amy and Neil I did truly care about. They had sad stories and I wanted to see them do well. But every other character I had little interest in.

Sorry, for the short review but I have to quickly finish up my Tim Horton's coffee then go get my maple syrup.

A small-town curling team reunites to regain their honour and finally take home the trophy.

This was a fun and easy read for a Saturday afternoon. As a Canadian, I enjoyed the many references that made it clear that our heroes live in Ontario. All four members of the curling rink (team) share the focus in the book. I particularly loved Eddie, a dreamer who is big on visualizing his success (even though he always fails), who loves his chubby wife Lily and who is desperately eager to have a baby.

The women don’t fare quite as well, especially Joanne, an escort who becomes the team’s trainer. Turns out she’s probably the nicest of the bunch (aside from Lily. I love Lily.) I like to think that some of the boob-ogling type stuff in the book wouldn’t get written today.

Overall though, it was a cute little underdog story.

This book has some really evocative descriptive phrases. The scenery then drew me into the small town atmosphere and curling interest. The main thrust of the novel is well done and easy to read. It's a fun piece of reading for a quiet afternoon.

New Brooms Sweep Clean

When the Men get Brooms, the Epics get Sweeping.

Good to get the Sweeping Epics out of the way. Now I just gotta put paid to the Darkly Comics, the Rollicking Romps, and the Rollercoaster Rides.
