Anne Hampson was born on 28 November 1928 in England. At age six she had two ambitions: to teach and to write. Poverty after WWI deprived her of an education and at 14 she was making Marks & Spencer's blouses at one shilling (5p) each.

She retired when she married. Later, when her marriage broke up, she was homeless with £40 in her purse. She went back to the rag trade and lived in a tiny caravan. But she never forgot her two ambitions, and when Manchester University decided to trial older women she applied, and three years later had achieved one ambition, so set her thoughts on number two.

In 1969, her first novel, Eternal Summer, was accepted five days from posting and she soon had a contract for 12 more. From the caravan she went to a small stately home, drove a Mercedes and sailed on the QE2. From the first book, came over 125 more written for Mills & Boon, Harlequin and Silhouette. Alan Boon (the Boon of Mills & Boon) and she came up with the title for 'Harlequin Presents' over lunch at the Ritz. She suggested to Alan that they have a historical series. He told her to write one - it was done in a month, entitled Eleanor and the Marquis under the pseudonym Jane Wilby. She has the distinction of being number one in Harlequin Presents, Masquerade and Silhouette. Many of "Presents" have been reprinted many times (some as many as 16) and are now fetching up to $55, being classed as "rare" books.

She has had 3 awards, one at the World Trade Centre where she received a standing ovation from her American fans, who had come from many states just to meet her.

She was retired, but in 2005 she wrote two romance and crime novels, both of which were published by Severn House.

She passed away on 25 September 2014. She has been written her autobiography, entitled Fate Was My Friend.

You're letting me down Anne. (sigh) Not a bad book, just didn't really give me that Pow! like she can be known for.

Another kidnapping gone wrong story, which results in the h, Kim, being forced to marry the H, Damon Souris (she does name those Greek heroes well ;D) in order to make his dying/not-dying mother happy (gotta make mama happy).

The H was a little bit of the dark alpha male I crave but he was mostly all huff and puff with no follow through (Oh, except for that scene in the beginning when he busted her in the face with his elbow...but he thought she was a man...and she was kidnapping him with a loaded stick, afterall). The h was suppose to be clever and sassy but that's up for debate. She developed a huge case of the stupids that just hurt my head, several actually, but something's gotta happen, right?

The whole book was pretty much...

H: "You better do as I say or I'll make you sorry."

h: "Ha! I don't have to listen to you!"

H: "I'm a Greek male, so you better do what I say!

h: "I'm English, so you can't make me!"

H: "You're playing with fire!"

h: "Watch me defy you! I'm so misunderstood!"

H: "Puff! Puff! Puff!" Brood. Brood. Brood.

h: "No! No! No!" Pout. Pout. Pout.

...ad nauseum. Oh, and there was one quickie OW scene that petered out faster than a cheapie bottle rocket, as well as a crazy neighbor.

I've read worse so I wouldn't say to avoid it. Just don't put it on your need-to-read-it-as-of-yesterday shelf.

I always enjoy an Anne Hampson forced marriage or marriage of convenience. I would have enjoyed this one a little better if I hadn't read "Not Far From Heaven" just recently which is a better take on the 'you have to be my wife because my mother is dying theme.' Interesting that was a Damon too.

So in this one we have a feisty red headed heroine all out to kidnap the bad guy who was going to despoil her young foster sister and break Mumsy's heart. Kim and her foster sibling's owe Mumsy so they will do anything to save her daughter.

UNfortunately everything goes wrong when they try and kidnap the evil adulterer, capturing Damon Souris instead, who mistakes Kim for a petty criminal out to take him hostage for ransom. ONe of the less positive aspects of being a millionaire in Greece.

When his mother suddenly takes a turn for the worse, wanting to see her beloved son married, Damon finds a use for his former kidnapper and they are thrust into a marriage of convenience that ends up lasting longer than expected, giving them time to get to know each other.

Complication with his ex and Kim's friendship with an odd English neighbour lead to an action packed (well a little bit) conclusion and a satisfying HEA.

The h is an idiot who tries to kidnap the H for some foolish reason. She does not succeed and he ends up beating her brutally, thinking she was a man. Even when he realizes it, he seems to find it very appropriate and enjoyable when she looks like she's been worked over by a prizefighter and is basically unrecognizable due to all the bruises, cuts and swelling all over her face (Hampson describes her face as "deformed.") Yes, he had every right to defend himself against being attacked, but to laugh and gloat at her battered face puts him in second place for the worst Hampson hero ever.

Kim Lyttleton's flighty young foster-sister was about to ruin her life by running off with a married man, and her family were worried to death about it.

It was the practical Kim who decided that something drastic would have to be done -- and she was the one to do it. The answer, she declared, was to kidnap the man in question. Unfortunately, Kim kidnapped the wrong man... and the tables were well turned when she found herself in the power of a very angry Greek, Damon Souris, who declared that if she didn't want to be handed over to the Greek authorities on a serious charge she had better do as he said and marry him!

Faced with that alternative, Kim had no choice but to agree -- but what sort of marriage could she possibly expect?

Improbable plot. Kim, the heroine, is supposed to be feisty, with an unconventional approach to solving problems, but she comes off as dim-witted and gullible. The romance is unconvincing. I did like the setting--the island of Cos.

I realize the standards of behavior were different then, but Damon behaves questionably on several occasions. I can't understand why Kim would fall in love with him. The ending was too contrived and unconvincing. I've read much better Anne Hampson books.

"Hunter of the East" is the story of Kim and Damon.

Read this book if you want to see the hero assault the heroine, threaten and abuse her throughout the book and scare her into non con things.

6/22/2020 Re-read and I enjoyed the plot and characters. 3.5 stars.

I read about 60% and then skipped to the HEA. Not my favorite Anne Hampson book.
