Barbara Faith de Covarrubias was born in Cleveland, raised in Detroit, and lived in Miami for fifteen years. While in Florida, she took night courses in Spanish and writing.
She worked for several years in public relations and wrote fiction in her spare time. Finally the desire to spend time in Mexico won out. On arriving there, she was instantly charmed by the country and planned to be very serious about completing her first novel. To Barbara Faith this included no dating.
However, the nexy day she was introduced to Alfonso Covarrubias, a retired matador. She couldn't pronounce his namd and she didn't know anything about bullfighthing, but she did know she was in love.
They married and lived for several years in Mexico before moving to Chula Vista, California. Barbara credits her husband for giving her the courage to continue writing. Her novels, The Moonkissed and The Sun DAncers, have been popularly received. She has written more than 40 romance novels as Barbara Faith (her maiden name) from 1978 until the day of her death. She won a RITA Award in 1982.
So, the book began really well....the H and h were high school friends and while the H was in love with her, he leaves town after the prom without telling her (after almost making love with her after the prom) because she's had a crush on some other boy. They meet again after 15 years for their reunion party. He's the local boy done well for himself, while she's a photojournalist living in Paris. They meet and very quickly fall in bed, and for each other. I really liked the book till this point. The h is well behaved and madly in love. And then a hurricane hits the area, he sees her with the same boy she used to like and completely misunderstands the situation. She risks her life and runs to him and they spend the duration of the storm distracting each other. And the H suddenly gets another side tp his character it seems. He is rude and hurtful when she goes around the town clicking photos of the destruction, then chases her down in another town to apologise and then gets a snit again when she tells him that she's been offered a promotion in Rome. He gives her an ultimatum that he's going on a two week sailing trip and she can either quit her job, change careers to what he feels he should do and go with him, or take a hike all the way to Europe! Here's the thing, throughout the book we see the hero saving and framing photos of her. He follows the magazine she works for and greatly admires her work. But flatly refuses to make allowances for it, or come to a compromise. Her mother, who seems to dislike him immensely suddenly turns his champion and shows disappointment and disapproval for her choice when she decides to go to Rome. There's a separate track of his father and her mother and that actually feels like a more balanced relationship. And of course, our camera totting, world traveller with a spine suddenly decides it's not worth it and turns up at the dock just as well as he's about to sale off. If you're looking for a feel good romance, you may like this till about two thirds of the story, after which you should just shut the book. I wish I had...!!
