Langston Brothers #3

11th Hour Rose

Rate this book
U.S. Marshal David Langston never planned to fall in love again. A graduate of West Point and former General in the Confederate Army, he wants nothing more than to move west, leave memories of loss behind, and put his honed skills to work as a government Indian agent. But when women start turning up dead in Charleston, his plans must be delayed.

As the only daughter of the widowed town sheriff, Lillian Hudson has grown up around the law. With her father’s encouragement, she’s spent years educating herself as an attorney and assisting in his work. Local society, however, is not ready for a woman lawyer, and the infuriating Marshal Langston is at the forefront of her naysayers.

Lilly Hudson is a thorn in David’s side. Bossy… stubborn… she perpetually sticks her nose where it doesn’t belong. When the unthinkable happens and Lilly falls into a serial killer’s sights, she has no qualms about seizing the opportunity and using herself as bait to catch the murderer. Tormented by memories of his late wife, David will hear none of it and vows to stop at nothing to keep her safe. As the dire situation unfolds, the pair become unlikely friends and attraction flares despite their tendency to clash.

Will David see Lilly for the strong, capable woman she is before it’s too late? Or will hopes of finding his way to her loving arms be forever dashed by a madman on the loose?

This one was okay. It was a pretty short read and the romance was good. I was just a little frustrated at the back and forth progress in their relationship. I also thought the killer was a little obvious and I had that gut feeling that it was him.

Still, the characters were likeable and the author makes you understand both the hero and the heroine's side. Ending was sweet and satisfying.

Historical (fiction) romance & mystery. Lilly is considered a spinster at 30 in late 1800's Charleston, SC. The war is over and her betrothed has not returned. She is studying law in hopes of beginning a lawyer in an era where women weren't considered capable. Her father is sheriff and the town is in the midst of several murders. U.S. Marshall Langston is assisting with the investigation and determined to keep Lilly out of his investigation as well as his mind. She, however, has other plans to help solve the murders. Mild sexual content.

I'm glad this book was free because I'm removing it from my Kindle. It wasn't historical fiction. It didn't seem true to the time period. The "mystery" was not a mystery. The gratuitous sexual content detracted from the story.

My exact rating is 2.5 stars because of the following issues.

It is too much of a genre romance for my taste. I found the quick fooling around unbelievable for the time period and characters.

I also found the talk of "serial killer" and profiling inappropriate for the time period. I am quite certain both are newer phenomena, at least in terminology.

But aside from that, I liked the characters, especially Lilly.

LOVED THIS STORY! You have a sexy U.S Marshall, a sheriff's beautiful daughter, and a serial killer! All you need in one!

Great story of a young woman in the late 1800s after the Civil War living in Charleston that suddenly has a serial killer focusing on her. She wants to bait him out so he can be caught, but the sexy U.S. Marshall won't have it. She is stubborn...can only guess what she does!

I loved reading this story and so would anyone who loves murder thrown in with romance!

Lilly is the daughter of the Sheriff in 1800s South Carolina. She helps her dad and studies law. People are not ready for a woman to be involved in the law or police business. Davy is a US Marshall and wants to protect Lilly. There is a serial killer on the loose in their town and she wants to use herself as bait to help catch him, Davy will not hear of it and actually locks her in the jail cell to keep her safe. Part crime story and part love story.

11th Hour Rose, was a tale of Davy finding love again after losing his wife eight years ago. Lilly was always challenging him. Little did he know that underneath it all that he had found his heart again in Lilly's crystal diamond eyes. I'm so happy for both Davy & Lilly!

Pretty ok

A little fast paced and obvious at the end but a nice little read. Think I've read this author before and probably will again.
