It's impossible for me not to rate every single volume 5 stars, oops.
I'm continuing my re-read in physical format and ah!!! I LOVE THIS VOLUME SO MUCH. Suiren and Kawasumi have their little summer festival date which has always and will always be iconic because of their cute masks they wear. I love how Kawasumi has been continously thinking about her more and more. It's not only karate he thinks now! He thinks CONSTANTLY about Suiren now and it's so cute to see them interact. While it's so early in their relationship rn and they barely speak or have moments together, I know it's the perfect pace for them, for two people who have never fallen in love or like anyone ever. This is truly their first love <3
These volumes are wayyyyy too precious! I literally was kicking my feet and squealing when reading this because even though there isn't much that "happens," there is something so beautiful and super cute about seeing our leads fall in love!
Truly, I was a little nervous that with how much I enjoyed volume one, I was second guessing if this volume could live up to the prequel, but I should have never worried in the first place!
For a series that currently doesn't have much dialogue, I never once found the volume boring! I really love how Suiren's friends really encourage and nudge Surien to be brave and talk to Kawasumi. Also the way they support her in her crush on him makes me so happy because I love seeing positive girl friendships represented in fiction!
To add to that though, I love when we're in Suiren's head and she is saying the words that she wishes could say out loud. While it may not seem SUPER obvious to everyone around her, she really does have a lot to say and wants to show how she cares for her friends and Kawasumi. I'm definitely cheering for her to continue to share her feelings and LOVED how she was brave and even told a joke! YOU GO GIRL! <3 <3 <3
Kawasumi is SOOOO sweet! I loved his struggle in this volume in how he is dealing with his feelings, BUT! Also he can be surprisingly bold too! Like excuse me while I go swoon for how adorable these two characters are!!
Overall, another very fantastic volume in a series that I am so desperate for more of!!
This just continues to be a sweet, slower paced, low-drama (though there is some bubbling up), high-school romance shojo. The characters are likable, the storyline realistic enough to not be ridiculous and the artwork is pretty. So far the pace is gentle and the budding romance is just TOO. SWEET.
I'm eating this up with a spoon! I highly recommend it if you like sweet to-the-point-of-but-not-crossing-the-line-of-tooth-decay.
Now, more drama is coming up on the horizon, so I'm hoping it is done with the same delicate touch the first two volumes have shown. I will definitely be reading the next volume to find out!
4, this is just the palette cleanse and break I needed, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

Still as cute as ever, but the slight miscommunications were a little too much this time! poor suiren 😭 I feel like she needs to see a speech therapist
I just cant with these two. After all these shitty days that seems like have no end in sight, I'm just so glad to be able to feel something good and giggle so much while reading this.
The story moves a bit more in this volume at last, but the paneling for some reason gets blockier. His aversion to girls is still annoying and her inability to speak is still frustrating.

Konnichiwa to all, readers 🌸
Today I bring you the review of the second volume of Suu Morishita's Daily Butterfly, a shôjo manga that is surprising me very pleasantly. With that said, let's get started:
🦋 This volume starts with a scene of romantic tension between Kawasumi and Suiren, being the one who greets him while he is with his friend Ryōsuke. This gesture breaks with the mental and martial discipline of the karateka, who is once again confused about the female gender.
🦋 After the meeting, the two protagonists end up eating with their friends on the roof of the institute, culminating in an uncomfortable scenario in which Suiren ponders how to approach the boy she likes.
At the same time, in the days that follow, he discovers that the first thought of each day when he opens his eyes is for Suiren, a fact that worries him.
🦋 Coinciding with the end of the semester, Koharu, the antagonist in love with the martial artist, continues to sink into her own frustrated fantasy of being able to raise him to the rank of boyfriend, but he continues to reject her and appear distant.
However, Suiren finds a way to ask him for a date, or a meeting with friends, to go see a fireworks championship, to which he agrees.
🌸 Conclusion: The outcome of the volume is focused on the festival to which the potential couple attends.
Leaving aside how beautiful Suiren is in a kimono or the detail that is hidden behind traditional masks so as not to be identified, the fact of being discovered by Ryōsuke, despite the fact that they are not formally engaged, gives us an image of the great weight of appearances in Japan.
The volume closes, revealing future conflicts related to the love that is emerging between Suiren and Kawasumi, well let's not forget that they are the two aesthetically most popular students.
This series, being based on two shy people, one who finds it hard to talk to almost anyone, including her mother in this volume, and one who doesn't know how to talk to girls and is awkward in a mixed gender group, is the quietest manga I have ever read. My issues with the white space and lack of backgrounds or background effects are pretty much gone, which makes this one more impactful. We start off with some decent karate action scenes and still get a lot of staring and averting gazes, but it doesn't drag on as much as in volume 1. We get to see the feelings from both perspectives and we get internal thoughts even though little is said between them.
These two are so cute though!! I love how protective and supportive Suiren's friends are, and how oblivious Kawasumi's friend is. The dynamic works well to set up our shy couple in different ways - it affects the way they think about each other and how they interact. When they are together, even when it's awkward, it feels natural, and when they look at each other, it's like they are the only two people in the world.
So cute! I just... Can't. LOL - in a world so loud and busy, this series offers a sweet, tranquil break where even your thoughts quiet down to, like, *library quiet* levels. It's so refreshing and appreciated.
My one big complaint is that it's really hard to remember they're in high school or to see them as high schoolers. It feels very middle grade or jr high-ish most of the time. I find myself comparing them to Sakura and Syaoran (Cardcaptor, et al) frequently, although they are adorable and have great communication (and who I'd love to see Clamp age up and give us a proper romance! But alas, that is a different series, sooo...) Back to Butterfly, this might be my "big" complaint, but it's minor, really. I think the author's avatar is creepy and that bugs me way more. (^~^;)ゞ haha!
Okay, I quite liked volume one but I feel like this volume was pretty much just a filler volume. Why? Because nothing really happened, minus the going to the festival and the fireworks. The two of them mostly just 'hang out' together at lunch...sort of...thanks to their friends. Ryocchi seems to be the character doing the most talking this time around. Him and 'Flower's' friends make it so they all have lunch together. They give the couple ample opportunity to talk to each other. But it mostly doesn't happen. Flower gets enough courage to ask Kawasumi to go to the festival with her and she has a great time. But other then that, it's a series of lunches and such and a lot of internal dialogue.
Both of them realize they like each other, but they are just so awkward!!! The sempai continues to pursue Kawasumi, who continues to dodge his way out of her advances. I think this is supposed to be comic relief, but it's kind of lacking for me. Obviously he's not interested and she should take the hint.
The art is still pretty good, so at least that's still going for the series. I am going to see if I can find the 3rd volume because I feel like it should, hopefully, pick up next volume.

4/5
Volume 2 of Like a Butterfly continues the story of Suiren and Kawasumi, two very awkward, very shy teenagers that have come to like each other. But they don’t realize the others’ feelings yet so most of their interactions involve shy, awkward silence. And yet.
This story is so cuuuuuute!! I love both the main characters. I can’t wait to see Suiren open up a bit more. I also loved the small view into Kawasumi’s perspective. I love Suiren’s character design. It must have been so fun to just create a super pretty character.
This story is a SLOOWWWW burn though. I like it that way because it adds to the plot. But I also can’t wait for more plot to happen. I don’t remember up til when did I read it the first time. I’ve definitely read vol 2 before but I’m not sure about volume 3, so I’m excited to read it!
The art continues to be good and I've gotten a new appreciation for the supporting characters in Like a Butterfly. Our lead pair continues to be mostly silent and awkward while orbiting around each other, but finally there's some development in the second volume. I think Ryocchi (Kawasumi's friend aka second male lead) is doing an awful lot of the heavy lifting with the non-internal dialogue. Second female lead (the sempai) is also doing her best to get things going (and continues to fail) in a wholesome manner that generates unintended comic relief. (I received a free ARC of vol. 2 from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.)
This series is very... soft. Kawasumi doesn't understand girls so he's quiet and a bit shy. Suiren has had bad experiences with boys so she's also quiet and shy. So most of the story is them quietly pining from afar (and occasionally not so far) while their inner monologue works through their feelings until one of them finally gets up the nerve to initiate any type of standard shojo plot.
And... it's not bad. They're a slow burn kind of romance without the over hyped drama that most shojos have. Even with the rivals and the rumors, the vibe stays chill. Quite enjoyable.
Suiren still has trouble using her words, but she's slowly learning to communicate with Kawasumi, at least to the point that he and his friend often join her group on the roof for lunch during school and they attend the summer fireworks festival together. That seems to have set off a lot of reactions though between the boys at school freaking out over who her possible new boyfriend is while Kawasumi tries to downplay it so the attention dies down. With him admitting that he wouldn't go to the festival with someone he didn't like though, did Suiren and her rival both hear that confession as well and just what will that mean for the dynamics of this group going forward?

4.5 Stars This was so cute and squeal worthy, Suiren and Kawasumi were so cute together. Their interactions at lunch are brilliant and the way they had their inner thoughts was brilliant. The summer school walk home was so cute and really show cased how they have both grown from the beginning. How Surien asked Kawasumi to the festival was brilliant and so well done. The actual Summer Festival was brilliant and so lovely to read about. The art was lovely and the story really goes well together. The character growth was brilliant and really thought out. This was so worth the read and so brilliant.

Argh! This one is so hard to rate!! I love the art. I love they story. But the overall result is so frustrating. This story is about two teens who have trouble communicating, but in stark contrast with something like Komi Can't Communicate, this one treats them like people who need to hide. Suiren's beauty means she has to hide and not go anywhere? Kawasumi's inability to talk to girls means it's ok for one to stalk him in every scene? I want to see where the sweet hatsukoi story goes, but I really hope they lay off the toxic vibes soon.
Another beautiful part of this manga series. The quality did not get worse, but it honestly wasn't better then the first. Starting to get a little annoyed at the two main characters and their *literal* lack of communication. But you can't help but cheer the main female character on as she finds her voice. Beautiful art work, and excited to read the next segment of the story.
Disclaimer: I was provided a free digital copy of this manga from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
