Fandom: Harry Potter -------------------------------------------------- A letter from home? A letter from family? Well, Harry Potter knows he has neither, but all the same, it starts with a letter from Surrey. Whatever the Durleys have to say, it can't be anything good, so Harry's determined to ignore it. But then, his evil schoolmate rival spots the letter and his slimy excuse for a teacher intercepts it and forces him to read it. And that sends Harry down a path he'd never have walked on his own.
It will be a year of big changes, a year of great pain, and a year of confronting worst fears. It will be a year of surprising discoveries, of finding true strength, of finding out that first impressions of a person's true colours do not always ring true. It will be a year of paradigm shifts.
And from the most unexpected sources, Harry will have a chance to have that which he has never known: a home ... and a family.
A sixth year fic, this story follows Order of the Phoenix and disregards any canon events that occur after Book 5.
-fanfiction -VERY LONG -plot heavy -no PWP, no slash, family friendly material -actually family heavy material, lots of family bonding, character development, no unnecessary love plots and interests -slythegrif and paperwork loopholes -abuse of your beloved characters warning. they are in a bad place but it gets better. -happy end -no seriously this thing is really long, so seriously think twice before saying 'one more chapter'
So... this was a very atypical fanfic, with lots of story and angst and character developement, and I think the characters were fairly well drawn. I initially gave it three stars, but I think Tat's mostly cos I read it straight after 'HP and the methods of rationality', and well, even the orrigional doesn't stand up well next to that. I've raised it to four, I just hope the final confrontation with voldemort is as story driven and dramatic.
I think this book took the record of being the longest fiction I've ever read from the next runner-up, which was another fanfiction. And not a whole lot happens in this book. So expect it to be slow, but not boring by any means. It just has a slower pace than you might be used to. There is a lot of angst, character development, and family bondings. And they are generally good. It is obvious that the author had considered future chapters when writing because there is a coherency in this story that I usually see in published works, not fanfictions. HP purists might consider that this story continues the Order of the Phoenix, and does not contain Horcruxes. But it is a good read for sure. I recommend it to HP Fanfiction fans that are not averse to Severus as a father figure.
PS: I've checked, and Revelations sequel ( a Pride and Prejudice fanfictions) is still the longest piece of fiction I've read.
This was so long OMG. I thought it was never going to end 😭 It was a good Severitus fanfic, though. A lot of character growth and very true to character as well. It is difficult to make someone love Draco, the real one. This fic made that happen.
The main focus of the story was Harry, but Draco stole the show. My poor boy suffered so much, lost so much, it broke my heart, but he was so brave and in exchange he got a family. I’m trying to keep this review spoiler free. It was a long ride to recovery. Very graphic violence and nastiness but there was also love in abundance. Severus trying to be a good father will always be my undoing.
One of my all time favorite Harry Potter fics. This one just blew me away with the authors creativity, taking the HP universe and just running with it. Great for HP fans.
ETA Still a great read. This author really managed to keep true to the characters while at the same time developing them in her own way.
It's ok. It's not bad but I can not say I liked it. I liked tiny bits of it but not enough to sell the whole thing to me. It's way way too long. A fic or book this long has to be really special to work for me and this just didn't. I feel like I am way too old to be wasting my time searching for the interesting 300 pages among 3100.
Ugh. I really wanted to finish this, but am stopping in the midst of Chapter 69--feels like I am pushing myself too hard to keep reading. 790,000 words is no joke, y'all. But 30 more chapters????? This story is incredibly long. I have enjoyed it--the writing and character development is well done. However, a much needed change of pace (from the dungeons and our three main characters) has not occurred and the story's bordering on the edge of repetition and my eyeballs drying up.
Some characters were written in a way that annoyed me, but then I still read it multiple times in a row, staying up till 4am because I couldn't stop. Lots of in depth convos that give you details on where people are coming from. Harry's reaction to a childhood of abuse, neglect and trauma are way more realistically written in this than the official books.
listen...do i KNOW that this is niche fulfillment of everything i WANTED the hp books to be and they weren't? absolutely. will that stop me from reading all 800,000 words of it? HECK no. the joys of rediscovering old classics like this will never be old.
i loved this book for real, i love long novels so much but this was long and fun i felt like i lived in it and it's the best feeling, i still read the family like none other book and hope the writer makes more of this type of novels with snape and harry having the father son relationship
I love the development of Severus and Harry’s relationship. I read the audio book is with the art website but have not been able to find that?. does anyone have adirect link to the chapters being read by various people?
I don't usually mark fanfiction as read, but after about seven days of just straight reading (work? what's work?), I want this to show up in my year-end reading stats dang it!
This is by far the longest book I have ever read and I can only describe it as on of the most intricate well thought out Harry Potter fanfiction I have ever read. Like this author took the squeleton that was the original material and ran with it, it had to take breaks in between. Severitus has always had a soft spot in my heart but throw in Harry and Draco being brothers and I am sold sold sold. Like I don't even know how to begin recomending this to people other than it will be an emotional rollercoaster and you'll love every second of it. Like it is so satisfying to see Harry actually grow up and learn from his mistakes and have an actual adult around to help him out. I love it and I am keeping it on my kindle until I learn how to bind shit and actually get a copy in my hands
I haven't read this in years. I'd forgotten how long is was (790,169 words). Still very, very good.
My preference for Harry Potter fanfic is Harry and Snape. My second choice is Harry/Snape/Draco. This was a father Snape and brother Draco. And a really foul Lucius Malfoy.
I had a hard time with this Draco. I like to like Draco, and he was pretty unlikable sometimes. I guess that means it's more realistic, because canon Draco was far from likeable. Still.
Didn't really know what to expect – turned out to be one of the best fics I’ve read; what a beautiful, heartwarming, captivating story. Plus it's so well written and structured, despite the length, there wasn’t a single paragraph or storyline that would be unnecessary or boring, which made the reading even more special.
LOVED this. Very much in doubt whether I like HPMOR or this one better.. I think I'd say this one, because Snape and Draco play such a big role and I love them.
