My Musings

I just love Victoria Vane’s historical romances. I can always expect to be entertained and given a chance to become enmeshed in the glittering Regency world. The Redemption of Julian Price did just that!

Henrietta Houghton believes she will never find a husband. Not wanting to live with her brother once she marries, she decides to visit her great-aunt in London. The day before she is set to leave, Julian Price shows up and offers to give her a ride her to London with him. This gives them a chance to catch up on each other’s lives.

Julian has returned from the war to find out his uncle has mortgaged his property and he is facing foreclosure. The last thing he wants is to become a mercenary soldier, an occupation that is sure to take the rest of his soul, but what choice does he have?

When Henrietta learns that her elderly aunt is giving her a substantial dowry, she asks Julian to marry her, thus saving him from losing everything and giving her a chance to be free. Can the alliance between them lead to heartache, or will it give them the love they both desperately long for?

This is a fast-paced story and grabbed my attention from the first page and held me in its thrall until the end. Ms. Vane has definitely penned another wonderful Regency romance. I found the story very realistic and enjoyed it tremendously. This is a great friends to lovers story, one that I will want to read again.

I fell in love with Henrietta’s character from the very beginning. She is truly endearing and has a great sense of humor while still being grounded in reality. I loved her loyalty to Julian and her desire to help him.

Wow! Julian is just the kind of hero I love, and there is a lot to love about him. He endured a tragic childhood living with his reprobate uncle. Then he goes to war at the tender age of eighteen and loses one of his best friends in battle. He comes back to find his estate on the verge of foreclosure and is faced with the awful decision that will destroy what is left of his soul. Yet, he still has tender feelings toward Henrietta. I truly love a hero who does not let the horrors of his past turn him into a cynic.

I listened to the audio version performed by the talented Stevie Zimmerman. I always know I’m in for a treat when she is the narrator. She does such a good job on the male characters. She truly brings the story to life. Although she reads with passion, she does not become overly dramatic. She does it just right.

If you enjoy a book that will sweep you back to the Regency period with entrancing character and a believable plot, then you will love The Redemption of Julian Price as much as I did. Happy reading!

Never before have I come across a story where the main characters are not only childhood friends - but where it is the woman who willingly proposes marriage to a man in order to save him from ruin. Usually there is some sort of duplicity involved at first - so this novel was like a breath of fresh air as far as that plot-line is concerned.

Even though all of these characters were well developed and the author obviously spent a lot of time making each one of them unique to the story, I have to say that my favorite character was that of Henrietta's great aunt – who knew that true love could overcome the odds and who had no qualms gifting a substantial amount of money to her niece, knowing exactly how she would use said gift.

Watching the childhood friends figure each other out and how best to navigate the world of marriage however – was a priceless gift to the reader.

"The Redemption of Julian Price" by Victorian Vane

My Thoughts....

The author really gives the reader a beautiful historic romantic read that will keep your attention
till the end. The read mainly focus with Henrietta Houghton and Julian Price giving one a well
developed, defined told story of two people who just needed to be loved in their own special way. What will happen when Julian is faced with what his uncle has done with his inheritance? What did his best friend Henrietta offer to help him in order to help him with his problem? Would these two people be able to 'navigate the world of marriage?' Now, I don't what to tell the story but want you to want to pick up this lovely story and see how well this author brings it all out to her readers.

This a sweet short romance, a quick read. Basically boy and girl (Henrietta and Julian) grow up together, best friends with her twin brother and the vicar' s son (Tom). They did just about everything together until boys notice her changing body. So they go their separate ways. Unfortunately Julian' s guardian squanders his inheritance and led Julian into the fast life of a rack. The Napoleonic war sees Tom and Julian go off to fight, but not before Tom proposes to Henrietta. However, only Julian returns. Although Henrietta really did not live Tom, she is prepared to never marry and wishes to be an independent woman. However, Julian's ruination by his uncle changes her mind and she proposes of a marriage of convenience. Does Julian accept? Do they realize they love each other and always have? Do they get their HEA? Read it to find out. It is a nice little read. I would like to read more by the author hoping events will be turned up a little.

Let's be honest, most of us cut our literary teeth on Jane Austen. Therefore, like most women, I adore all things historical and British. This book is a far cry from P&P but I'm sure the author never intended it to be. It was however very entertaining in its own right. I enjoyed the miscommunications between the characters and the predictability of their unrecognized love. Both characters were clearly struggling with self-worth and they found their places with each other. It was well written and well paced.

The Good: Henrietta's curiosity about attraction and the marriage bed. I laughed so hard at how easily she made awkward conversation.

The Not So Good: I definitely could have done without the sex scenes!

The Verdict: 4 Stars

This was nice book, I don't usually like historical romances but this one was really good. I love the connection and friendship between Henrietta and Julian. They were meant to be together. Love how Henrietta wanted to help Julian and how they finally come to admit their feelings for each other. Really good story.

Henrietta believes she will never marry although Tom had proposed but didn't make it back from war. But Henrietta wants to be independant and not live with her brother after he marries, So she decides to go to London to see her aunt Lady Cheswick. Maybe Henrietta can become her aunt's companion. Julian and Tom and Henrietta and her twin brother Harry were all best friends until Henrietta started turning into a young lady. Julian was back from the war but has survivors guilt as he had lived and Tom hadn’t and Tom had been his best friend. Julian shows up just before Henrietta is to leave and offers to give Henrietta a ride. Then they could catch up on each other. Julian’s uncle had mortgaged his land and squandered Julian’s inheritance while Julian was at war. Julian had been raised by his uncle. Then Henrietta learns her aunt is giving her a dowry of ten thousand pounds and she asks Julian to marry her so she can help him pay off his land and he agrees.
I loved this story was bittersweet in a way. Going from childhood best friends and Henrietta still helping Julian plus he helped her in she wouldn’t be a spinster after all. This was a good quick read. Also this story got a lot of your emotions going. I love how loyal Henrietta was to Julian also. This story grabbed my attention right away and kept it until the story was over. I loved the plot and the characters . I also loved the ins and outs of this story and I highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this story about a couple who had been friends for most of their lives, but never admitted they might be romantically interested in each other until they came back together years later. Julian was haunted by the war and financially devastated by his late uncle's mismanagement. Henrietta was resigned to being a spinster and acting as a companion to her great aunt.

I liked that Julian and Henrietta were comfortable with each other since they had known each other since childhood. They had a good relationship even before they decided to enter a marriage of convenience, which made it more believable that they would actually have feelings for each other.

Lots of historical detail really set the scene. This was a novella-length story that was quick to read.

THE REDEMPTION OF JULIAN PRICE by VICTORIA VANE

Henrietta Houghton and Julian Price were childhood friends. Henrietta was even one of the boys until the dreadful day when her friends noticed she really was a girl. Julian was raised by a dissolute uncle, and he more or less followed in his footsteps, until there is no more money; his uncle has squandered everything and Julian is almost penniless. His name is worthless and even going to war didn’t bring him any honour, only heartache. Henrietta’s twin brother is getting married, her only suitor died in the war, and now she’s resigned to be a spinster. She’s travelling to London to see her great-aunt, the formidable Lady Cheswick, in hope of maybe procuring a position as her companion. As it happens, Julian is also going to London to see how he can try to salvage whatever little is left of his paltry inheritance. Nothing much ever happened between Julian and Henrietta as they were growing up; they were friends, even though there was a little flirtation happening. And they might not have revealed everything they felt about each other throughout the years. Upon arriving in London, Lady Cheswick does something that will change Henrietta and Julian’s life…

THE REDEMPTION OF JULIAN PRICE is a novella of absolute perfection! There are no silly misunderstandings, it’s fast-paced, every character is interesting and complex, the story is solid and everything is entirely believable. Julian and Henrietta are wonderfully engaging; theirs is a beautiful romance, growing from an honest and deep friendship. The dialogues sound entirely natural, and Ms. Vane’s prose is absolutely flawless; it is gorgeously written, there are delicious sensuous moments, and one prickly issue is settled in a most satisfying manner. And I so loved the deliciously wicked Lady Cheswick. THE REDEMPTION OF JULIAN PRICE could easily have been a whole book, there is so much story in there! Just wonderful!

As usual, Victoria Vane captured me with one of her sweet, romantic tales! This story is of Henrietta and Julian. He just came back to Shropshire from his term in the military with his name and estate in shambles and owing a large sum of money. Known as a deviant with a heart of gold, Henrietta has missed him all these years while away.

He never knew she was in love with him, and she never knew he felt even the smallest bit of attraction toward her prior to his absence. She is free now that she has reached age to make her own decisions, and has decided to take leave to visit her Aunt's in hope of finding adventure and independence. Julian, being her oldest friend accompanies her, but little did they know that they would end up in a much more serious situation.

No longer a teenager hitting puberty, and no longer expected to be married to Thomas (one of the four best friends as children along with Henry, her brother) due to his untimely death while riding alongside Julian during wartime, Henrietta finds herself concocting a plan. After realizing that Julian is destitute, and will be forced to relinquish all of his holdings in order to pay off said debt she comes up with a plan to save him, and in the process help herself....hopefully.

Julian intends to pay off his debt and steal away in the night to become a mercenary as there will be nothing left for him. However, when Hen brings up her intent to wed him, he finds himself in a position to gain everything he has always wanted. However, will he take a chance? What of his mistress? The ride these two take you on is not only enjoyable, but sweet and fun. I just love Victoria and all of her stories. You should give them a chance if you haven't!

"The Redemption of Julian Price" by
Victoria Vane is another well written Historical Romance.
A beautifully written love story. Not your everyday romantic tale. The characters are flawed, and damaged, as well as, redeemable, engaging, and endearing. Looking for love, they didn't know they needed, but can they find contentment, peace, and a forever kind of love?
A story of love, a marriage of convenience, disappointment, grief, and betrayal with a mixture of a sweetness, one seldoms finds in a romantic tale. There is a sweetness about this story, the reader can connect to, where, the reader becomes engrossed and invested in the characters lives.
I enjoy Ms. Vane's tales, she writes with such honestly, with such emotionally charged characters, the reader becomes entranced in the story.
An interesting read from beginning to end. A quick read, only 196 or so pages, that is packed full of emotions and intensity, and brought to an enjoyable, satisfying ending.
Once again Ms. Vane has written a superb Historical Romance, with a uniqueness readers will enjoy.
Another hit by Ms. Vane. I highly recommend reading "The Redemption of Julian Price", you will not regret your choice. Well done, Ms. Vane! Must note, this is not an Erotic Romance, but a very sweet romance.

'The Redemption of Julian Price' by Victoria Vane is the story of Julian Price and Henrietta Houghton.

Julian was being raised by his Uncle who pretty much left him to run wild. Julian, Henrietta "Hen", Harry (Hen's brother), Thomas and a few others were childhood friends that did everything together. But one summer Hen started to change more into a women and she was pretty much outed from the group because of the changes in her and her body. They all remained friends just not as they once were. Julian along with other in the group joined the fight against Napoleon.

Now in the present day Thomas has died, Julian finds his Uncle has run through the money and left a large debit. Harry is to be married and Hen is turning 21 and thinks she will be a 'old maid'.

Hen does come into some money from a elderly family member who has always liked Hen and will leave more to her when she passes. So Hen thinks to go to Julian and offer marriage to help him get out of debit with her money and also because she has always had feelings for him.

But will Julian go along with this and how will their friendship change?

"The Redemption of Julian Price" by Victoria Vane was a very sweet, heart warming story. Julian and Henrietta grew up together in the country. Julian always was a wild young man, his family died when he was young, and he was left to be raised by an uncle who was barely aware Julian was there. Henrietta was always more of a tomboy and liked to ride and play with the boys her twin brother played with.
Julian and another friend Tom went to war. Only Julian came back. A much different Julian came back, his uncle squandered the estate away and Julian knows that he will have to let his land go and live out of the country to make any kind of a living.
Henrietta has always liked Julian and is happy to have him back. When she learns of his troubles and her unexpected inheritance she offers to help him get out of debt with a marriage of convenience. Trouble is, she doesn't really want it to be cold and loveless, but she believes that he does.
When they finally work out what the other actually wants, they find a great love and passion between them. This novella has some passionate moments that were very well written and steamy. I have really liked everything I have read by Victoria Vane and I really enjoyed this one.

Julian Price is childhood friends with Henrietta Houghton. His parents died when he was young and he was left in the care of his wastrel uncle. When he was eighteen, Julian and his best friend, Thomas, enlisted in the army. Henrietta thought her chance for marriage ended when she received Thomas's marriage proposal three days after receiving news of his death.

Her twin brother, Henry, is getting married and Henrietta wants to get away from the marriage preparation. She decides to visit her scandalous great aunt in London. Julian is visiting Henry on his way to London. His life is changing because his uncle has squandered his inheritance. On the journey to London, Julian and Henrietta's relationship changes. She realizes that she has feelings for Julian. Her great aunt gives her ten thousand pounds for her dowry and Henrietta offers Julian a marriage of convenience. When she realizes that Julian has a mistress, things change and she no longer wants a loveless marriage.

I enjoyed reading this novel. I liked the characters and loved how Henrietta got her HEA with Julian. Victoria Vane does not disappoint.

A product of circumstance, few people took the time to look behind the reckless behavior of Julian Price. Condemnation and judgement were constant in his daily life. For those who took a chance at getting to know him, it was easy to see the boy struggling to become a man needed guidance and love beyond all else. Henrietta knew what fear and anxiety felt like. In her youth she was carefree and happy. Maturity brought change and loneliness that left her on the outside looking in. The Redemption of Julian Price is a coming of age love sonnet that explores the insecurities that have been breed by carelessness, guilt and neglect. I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review. Ms. Vane allows her readers to learn about life, love and temptation right along with her characters. There is almost an innocence about these two as they reacquaint themselves with each other as mature adults. A fluctuating tempo threw me off in the beginning but I enjoyed these two together despite that. My rating: 3.5

A very engaging and lovely novella by Victoria. I was hooked from the first paragraph. This is the story of two people who have known each other most of their lives. Henrietta was just one of the boys when she was younger, now she is a young lady who has had a Season and did not take. So now she is watching all of her siblings getting married and does not want to end up a spinster dependent of her brother.

Julian comes home from the war alone, his best friend died and he feels that it should have been him. He feels guilty that he survived. His uncle has left him penniless and he will have to sell everything to satisfy his creditors and then he has no choice but to go back to Portugal as a Soldier of Fortune,or so he believes.

Henrietta has a plan but will Julian go along with it?

Victoria has written a very compelling story that you can sit down and read in one night. The sensual scenes are hot and the love story is wonderful.

This book was a delight. Henrietta is a heroine that we all can love. She is intelligent and forthright. She grasps the problem and seeks a solution. Well, her notorious Aunt helps the solution along. Julian is Henrietta’s childhood friend. He thought of her as a pal for those formative years until one day she started maturing and she was no longer allowed to cavort with her twin brother Henry and friends Julian and Thomas. Julian went off to war and came back to find his uncle had squandered his fortune. Now in debt and troubled by the war Julian feels his only recourse is to become a mercenary soldier. Henrietta has other ideas.

This is a lovely story of a woman who knows what she wants and a man who is not too obtuse to grasp the carrot when it is dangled. The romance was always there and it is wonderful to see how the characters discover it.

This is a short book, only 197 pages, so it is a quick and most satisfying read. Highly recommend!

Thank you to Netgalley.com for the free ARC of this book.

Have you ever just hung out with your bestfriend doing nothing all day, and when your mom asks you what you were up to, you can't remember? That's precisely my dilemma here. I enjoyed reading a book where the female character isn't afraid to speak openly about her sexual curiosity, yet at the same time I was flipping back pages trying to see if I skipped something important.

Outside of Henrietta's curiosity and desire for Julian, there is no story plot. Oh, there is definitely more the author could have expanded on, but it seems like she got wrapped up in these two and forgot everything else.

The writing was neat, the dialogue and characters stayed true to the individual and the reader does see where the author tries to tie up loose ends, but there just isn't enough meat to this book for me to give it the full 3 stars I think it could be worth.

Julian Price was allowed to run free as a child, because after the death of his immediate family a wastrel uncle took over his care. He did have very good friends in the neighbourhood. But since so many of those friends died in the war, he feels he has nothing left to lose. Even when he finds out that his uncle has run the estate into debt.
Henrietta Houghton was considered one of the chaps when she was playing with her twin brother and his friends. That was until they noticed she was turning into a woman. Years later she has made up her mind to remain a spinster, because the only man she has ever wanted doesn't want her.
This is a gentle romance, with two people who have been friends for life, but have changed in adulthood, and are terrified of spoiling what they have.
No great surprises, but an entertaining read. With lovely characters.

This was an enjoyable read to me. I like the trope the author used with the H and h being best buds when young, then years later the H realizes the h has blossomed into a fine young woman. The heroine's curiosity about physical intimacy was refreshing to see in a book. She was very forthright in wanting to know what it involved and why. The characters were well developed for a novella. I thought the author used a deft hand in portraying how war changed the hero. Toward the end of the book I was put off, because excuses were being made of why men kept mistresses. Up until that point this was a 4 star read.

This is a short, deep story. Victoria will twist lots of your heart strings while reading this story. She will get your emotions all over the place. Henrietta grew up as one of the Boys. Spoiler. Eight years later the War is over but most of her Boys won't come home. Spoiler. Her best friend was the only one to come home. Spoiler. He finds his Uncle ran his Estate into the ground. Spoiler. Hen wants Julian to stop being a Rogue. She wants her real friend back but he has to sell everything he owns including his family home. She offers him an out but will he take it? This is an adult story. It will pull you into this story. I hope you choose this book to read. Enjoy! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.

3.75/4. Short but entertaining read. The heroine and the hero grew up together as close friends. He left to fight in the Napoleon War unaware that she had been carrying a torch for him for many years. He came back a changed man - colder and more cynical. She remained constant in her heart for him all these years. He slowly thawed as she refused to allow him to push her away, eventually making him an offer he couldn't refuse. I found the bit about the heroine seeking some pointers from his mistress a bit icky. Otherwise, it was solidly written and not bad at all for my first book from this author.

The Redemption of Julian Price by Victoria Vane is a fantastic read. This is a fairly quick read, a great choice for historical romance fans with limited time for reading. I was fascinated by this story, where not only the main couple are childhood friends but they also end up in a marriage of convenience. Henrietta and Julian did this transition in a very natural way. Even though it's only 90 pages long, it doesn't feel rushed or had any pacing issues. I haven't yet read a book by Victoria Vane that isn't at least good, but this one was spellbinding, I didn't want it to end!
