A Clabe Taylor political thriller: Creed Tucker is an old-school Texas cowboy who finds himself at the epicenter of a firestorm when a Mexican drug cartel moves its operations across the Rio Grande River.
With the governments in Austin and Washington fighting each other rather than the cartel, Creed and his Mexican wife Guadalupe are forced to take a stand. With the help of Mako Sloane and a team of retired CIA operatives, Creed learns of a bizarre conspiracy to seize political control of South Texas involving the drug cartel, the leading Mexican presidential candidate, and a high-ranking U.S. politician.
Creed and his allies navigate their way through kidnappings, murders, and assassination attempts that threaten to unravel the very fabric of Texas society and destroy the Tucker family…only to discover that the real threat lies much closer to home.
Clabe Taylor has lived up to expectations with "Texmex," a worthy sequel to his debut novel, "Mako." While Mr. Taylor's fruitful imagination was clearly at work, in "Texmex, he has abandoned the hilarious fantasy of his first novel to tackle very real contemporary issues: the tense situation along the Mexico - Texas border and the growing influence of drug cartels in the region. His characters ring true and it is clear that he knows both Texas and the issues intimately.
One thing I admire tremendously about Mr. Taylor's writing is his descriptive skills. He paints word pictures of characters and locales that bring the reader right into the middle of the action. The writing talent so evident in "Mako" is honed to a shart edge in this novel.
The story is timely, and the controversial themes of drug cartels, illegal immigration, U.S. - Mexican relations, and Texas politics are deftly handled. No one but Clabe Taylor could have written this book and written it so well. A "must read" that merits a place on anyone's bookshelf
