Luck Be A Lady

Lord Chillingsworth’s reputation precedes him—the infamous “Frost” is as legendary on the field of honor as he is in the bedroom. Love: A Roll Of The Dice?

Emily’s vendetta is personal: She is determined to take a pound of flesh from Frost, who ruined her sister. But the man she meets is not the cold-hearted devil she imagined—and is twice as handsome to boot—and soon Emily finds herself falling for him. Their battle of wills quickly ignites into blazing desire. Could it be that the most jaded Lord of Vice is finally willing to risk everything and gamble on her heart? Or is true love only a fool’s game?

3.5 stars *shakes head*

After months of waiting for the last book in the Lord of Vice series, Twilight with the Infamous Earl has finally arrived. I mentioned in my review of the graphic novel Trese: Stories from the Diabolical Vol 1 that I think it's scary for the readers that sequels might not live up to the hype. As I mentioned in my previous reviews of the other Lords of Vice books, I most looked forward to Frost's story because I was very fascinated with how he became as frosty as his name supposes him to be.

I was so excited that I immediately got a copy as soon as it was out. Did it live up to my expectations?

Alas, no. Sorry.

First, it was too short. We've been teased for the past six books about Frost's character and him being the biggest scoundrel of them all. I was expecting sharp exchanges of wit. Barbs. Delicious friction between him and the lady. I want to bang my head against the wall instead in disappointment. I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm just really frustrated! What I got was a toned down Frost, with very little of his notorious exploits that made me half love and half hate him. And he was partnered with a woman who could not even hold down her skirts long enough to make us truly anticipate the time when they would finally get together. She gave in too easily to Frost. And, despite knowing who Frost was, she didn't even manage to elude him easily. Emily wasn't as feisty or as strong as I expected to be able to battle wills with him.

Second, Frost didn't exhibit anymore his usual insouciance or the wicked, dark innuendos he used to dish out to his friends. And one of the reasons why I enjoyed the Lords of Vice series was Alexandra Hawkins' ability to make me like really notorious men--men who, in real life, would usually have me running the other way if I saw them coming my way. And for such an infamous earl, Emily's father didn't even balk at Frost's courtship of his daughter. The scandalous three dances with a single gentleman didn't even raise so much as an eyebrow from the ton. Egad.

Third, I felt like the story could have used a lot more pages, not because I wanted a longer story, but because Twilight with the Infamous Earl truly needed it. We are finally teased with a glimpse of his childhood story but we don't truly know what set him off to be like that. There was no word on what happened to Regan's relationship with her mother. Frost was also dealing with his friends' shifting of priorities since they all got married. He started feeling left out; I wish there were more paragraphs exhibiting the friends' slow withdrawal from their previous pursuits to truly establish that Frost was alone, and that he was right to doubt his friends' loyalty.

Twilight with the Infamous Earl wasn't all that bad--it just wasn't all that good either. It didn't leave me raving and feeling satisfied that the long wait was worth it. Ah well. C'est la vie. On to the next book.

I like Alexandra Hawkins and her writing... But her books suffer from bad editing, and the HEA cliff syndrome. The story goes at a good pace for a while, then, in the last fifty pages or so, starts rushing like a charging bull towards the end. As if the author was trapped by a deadline and just wanted the thing done already. It isn't horribly done, but is definitely noticeable.

This is it. The last book in this Lords of Vice series. And ending with the baddest boy of them all seems a fitting send-off. Frost has beguiled readers for years now, and anticipating his story has kept them on tenterhooks, guessing how it’s all going to come together for him and his heroine. The question is: does Frost find that heroine who is his match? The one who stands up to him when needed? The one he’ll do anything in the world for?

Frost and Emily’s first meeting actually brings forth the good side of the man. Especially after he’s just left the bed of his current mistress, who’s he’s tired of already. Emily is in the middle of a confrontation with a man who’s ready to sell his daughter on the street to make money to get them by – until the next time, of course. But Emily’s having none of it when she happens upon the duo and is determined to whisk the girl away to keep her safe. Frost hears the commotion and decides to investigate, taking control of the matter for the beautiful redhead who intrigues him with her intensity and strong will.

Then Frost discovers the lady he so graciously assisted is making noise about trying to close down Nox, and he’ll be damned if someone will take his club from him. But he can’t deny the intrigue of the woman, and so begins his slow seduction that catches them both by surprise. Frost has never wanted an innocent in his bed, and Emily’s thirst for revenge against the rogue who ruined her sister hits a snag when she discovers that rogue is Frost. She’s torn between what she now knows about the man and the name her sister whispered with her dying breath, casting an accusation against Frost Emily can’t ignore.

But Frost makes sure she doesn’t ignore that bit of information as much as possible. When he finds out what Emily believes, he assures her he’s not the man she’s looking for and resumes his attentions with single-minded determination, and he finds himself more enamored of the woman than any other in his life. Which says a lot, considering all the women who fall at Frost’s feet. It’s the fact that Emily refuses to fall in line as all those other women have that brings the capture-and-conquer gene out in Frost. There’s outside conflict brewing on each side; Frost’s former mistress brings out the claws in Emily and Emily is led astray when least expected by one she trusts. There’s also plenty of sexual tension, as you would expect from a Lord of Vice, and it’s interesting how much control Frost loses when he finally has Emily in his bed. He’s a bit befuddled at that himself.

In between all of this, Frost’s mother makes an appearance, and the woman runs up against a brick wall. He refuses her request to see Regan, his sister, but mom is going to have the last word, getting to Regan herself. What I love about Frost most is his protective quality and the fact that he loves his sister so dearly. Though his deception about their mother causes some tension, Regan is his family and they work things out. We also, of course, have the other Lords involved throughout the story, along with their wives, and it’s great to catch up with them and see how strong their friendship has remained over the years.

My only nitpick is I wanted Frost to be a tad more bad before giving in to his feelings for Emily. I mean, we’re talking about Frost here. I still remember his “faux pas” with Madame Venna and the resulting fight with Saint when Saint discovered what happened. I wanted something on the same scale from Frost in this book. His arrogance and pride are very much in evidence, both of which fit him like a glove, but I just hoped for more.

However, this is a terrific send-off for a series that has given readers over-the-top alpha heroes who gracefully succumb to the love of their heroines, all of whom are perfect for these men. Each of those men embrace the balance of love and family, while maintaining long-time friendships of those who know exactly what would have become of them all if they’d hadn’t found that all-consuming love. Alexandra Hawkins has taken readers through a world of emotion, danger, and romance, along with a good dose of vices that these Lords are more than happy to leave behind – or rather bring to the bedroom to share with their heroines. I’m sorry to see the series end, but I know whatever Ms. Hawkins has in store for us next will be written with the same level of quality and heart.

Finally! This book was worth the agonizing wait.....and too short for a anti hero turned hero like Frost. Sigh...

I love a anti hero, entirely thru this whole series, that I’m not even sure I liked that much, I’ve been a fan of Frosts, lol. I’m not surprised. I like em like this, lol. He’s devious, downright scandalous, his hands are in every couples woes. He’s a rose thorn you cannot pullout!

He’s MINE!....... :-)

He got a worthy and sensual leading lady, I left this book happy, very happy with the pairing. Part of my 5 Star is just the overall relief of completing this series, it’s long been on my TBR list. However, I struggled mightily with it, one character kept me going and that was a Frost aka Lords Chillingsworth. The only other book I rated as well was the first and that was Sins book.

Again though...I was left with gaping holes in the plot.....I’ve given up even asking about them or commenting. It seems to just be the way the author writes.

The book as a whole for SEVEN long books was vastly disappointing as it didn’t have an epilogue. Nothing to show us where these fallen men have landed after Nox, no family or children updates. It’s with regret that I have to challenge the author, plead more or less for a novella. Some kind of time warp into the future of these couples, otherwise I feel.....well, a bit robbed.

I had a lot of expectations from this one, since Frost in all the previous books was depicted as a hard hearted, cynical jerk..I thought he'd be paired with a girl who will bring him down on his knees and be as spirited as Regan!! BUT even with a perfectly great character 'Frost' and a good plot, it fell short :(

In the end I was like "W-T-H NO Epilogue", I had hoped for a lovely end,a wedding with all the other 'lords of Vice' present and a premise set up for Raven's story next, also the upcoming new members of Nox there, but all that was sorely missing!!!

Hope to read Raven's story next..he is thoroughly debauched!!

This book felt more like a 3 for me, but I'm going to give it an extra star because Frost :D But that's a problem, because that's what I feel describes AH has done with this series. She gives us such a delicious premise for the series and such promise in her bare plots for each book that we're suckered into getting them hoping that she'll finally live up to the book her plots and her characters promise to give us. BUT THEY NEVER DO. And I feel so betrayed because my GOD Frost deserved so much more!

Another reviewer has put this better than I could but I was expecting Frost's to be full of witty, quippy exchanges with a woman who could more than hold her own. And Emily's nice she's just not what I imagined for Frost. If anything, he seems to be a toned down version of himself after he meets her. And yes, sure, he needs to settle down a little for any married bliss to occur, but it was too much. My model for a well-written reformed rake will always be Sebastian St. Vincent, and wow Frost is like the first H in years that I thought could possibly come close. He didn't.

I also thought Frost deserved more retaliation for how much he provokes the others, but somehow he gets away with it. And I was really looking forward to the others seriously annoying and teasing him the way he did them when they were getting to their HEAs.

And, okay, was I the only one who found it ridiculous that every LOV post-marriage was suddenly uber-concerned with not doing anything wrong because it might upset their ladies and their reputations?! A) The ladies should be the first ones to tell you that F THAT, they're not some snivelling misses who don't know how to deal with a little societal disapproval. And B) YOU WEREN'T EVEN A TINY BIT FUCKING CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR REPUTATIONS BEFORE MARRIAGE SO WHY THE HELL DO YOU CARE NOW?!?!?!

And obviously there was the expected lack of understanding of how the ton operates. Three dances and only a minor eyebrow-raising? COME ON. You wouldn't have to read more than 5 ton-related HRs to know that's practically an announcement of a betrothal.

Still, despite him being a toned down Frost, we still got Frost, so I was happy with that. Although, once again, a chapter seemed to have got unceremoniously cut from the book without being made up for adequately.

And how is it that her sister's fiance who suddenly turned evil never got any retribution? Although perhaps never being able to fulfill his vengeful plans is retribution enough.

And was I the only one questioning exactly what qualified the "puppies" to be the new LOV in charge of Nox or whatever, apart from pulling off a successful prank in a ballroom once and then glaring at Frost the rest of the evening while trying not to show that they were completely intimidated by him?! I have no qualms about Ravens' suitability though, regardless of Sin, Vane and Hunter's squeamishness :D Definitely looking forward to getting to see more of Ravens :D (I hear he features in the novella so YAY)

Anyway, I actually totally had this completely different idea for how Frost's book would go (based on my adamant belief that Frost was the world's greatest secret matchmaker) but this was a let down. I still loved being in this world for the time I was in it. And I've pretty much created my own canon version of Frost's HEA in my head, so I'm just going to continue believing that's real, and kinda ignore this one :D Sorry, AH! I loved your ideas, but your execution? 5/10 on avge for the entire series.

I've heard that AH is writing a final novella as a coda of sorts for the LOV series. I really hope that deals with Frances and her unrequited love for that Derrick guy or whatever their names are. I was kinda hoping Frances would be Frost's h but that's a conversation for another day :)

Final thought on the series as a whole:
It started off fairly well although there were obvious issues with the first 3 books-for me Regan and Dare's book is still the best one, even if Sin and Juliana's had possibly the hottest carriage love scene I've ever read :D I don't think I'll ever look at pearls the same way again.

After that, however, we got books that all had very obviously rushed endings with significant parts of plot development missing for no goddamn reason. So, while living in this world for fun, I wish someone like Lorraine Heath could have written this series-she'd have done a monumentally better job with it.

Finally, what is AH's obsession with the word "gent"?! Idk if I've ever read that anywhere else in HR and it was extremely jarring at first, even if I eventually resigned myself to its usage.

Well, in December of 2010 my husband bought me the first edition Nook and the first book in this series was one of the first books that I downloaded. I LOVED it. I fell in love with the Lords of Vice and after meeting them all in Book 1, I couldn't wait to read each and every one of their stories. I loved the first 3 books in the series and then after that the books went progressively down hill.

It felt to me like each book had less and less meat to the story and it was more like the stories had a slight build up, the meeting and then everything just wraps up into a nice neat bow. This story felt the exact same way.

I have been dying for Frost's story but this really turned into a pretty big let down. Don't get me wrong, it started out pretty good and I liked the chemistry between Frost and Emily but when the story should have had the meat....meh. And at one point between chapters 25 & 26....I swear to god a chapter was missing....or got edited out. One minute Emily is being confronted by Frost's ex-mistress at the opera and then it jumps to what seems like days later and it is all spoken of in the past tense but we don't even know what the meeting consisted of.....Why bother to include a mention of a confrontation at all if you are not going to follow through with it. And she supposedly shared the contents of Lucy's letter with Frost....WHEN???? Very confusing in my mind.

Frost himself seemed to lose his identity in the second part of the book. Obviously I expected him to mend his whoring ways but he almost seemed emasculated by the end of the book and that was a bit of a shame.

It is really too bad because the series started out with such a bang but kind of went out with a whimper.

I have been waiting for Frost's story for so long and Alexandra Hawkins did not disappoint. The story focuses on the final single member of the Lords of Vice. Throughout the other stories Frost has been cynical of love and commitment. Often making fun of or being downright rude about their feelings and the women that the other Lords loved. So we knew immediately it would take a very special lady to bring Lord Chillingsworth to his knees.

That lady was Miss Emily Cavell. Emily has come to London with one thing in mind find the one that ruined and abandoned her sister and make them pay. When she initially meets Frost she is intrigued, but soon she finds out that he is called Frost and her feelings take a turn for the worse. You see Frost was the name of the man that her sister proclaimed ruined her. But how can the charming man in front of her be the scoundrel that her sister wanted her to believe.

Throughout the story you learn more and more of the story about Frost and Emily's sister Lucy. Frost has to work harder than he ever has to win the affection of the one woman he could ever love, while trying to prove his innocence.

A great read and ending to this chapter of the Lords of Vice. Although I am pleased the Ms. Hawkins left the opening for the next generation of the Lords of Vice as well.

I thought that Frost will put bigger fight for his freedom. I expected a little bit more inner dialogue and doubts from him, but for a man who was so against marriage he gave up pretty easily. Also at 80% of the book I had the feeling that whole chapters were missing. A lot of scenes were just not there and I was lost for a bit. As if the author was trying to finish the novel as fast as possible.

This book started well, but then the momentum changes drastically in the second half. Hawkins ends one chapter with a cliff hanger and then never shows us what happened. I was convinced that I had skipped a chapter. I hadn't. But the missing plot was indicative of the rushed nature of the second half of the novel. It left me dissatisfied with the HEA.

Frost is my favorite Lord of Vice. I really enjoyed this book but there was just something missing. A little more drama with the bad guy. It's nice to see all the Lords of Vice and their wives. And she left it open for maybe one more book, maybe

gimana frost selalu menentang segala bentuk komitmen, & memandang wanita hanya sekedar kepuasan seksual belaka.
I'm in love with frost from the first time I read about him in this series.

well, 1 masalah kecil & 1 masalah besar.

frost merasa sejak menikah, teman2nya meninggalkannya.

tapi sang countess salah perkiraan.

dengan menjumpai countess, otomatis perjanjian mereka batal & artinya no more money for her.
jika itu tidak mencukupi kebutuhan sang countess, then it's so not frost's problem.
after all, frost already warned her.

ups back to frost & emily's romance...
emily nyaris celaka karenanya.

Nah pas die umur 20th, emaknya ngajakin die ke London buat cari suami, Ems mikir sekalian cari nama lord yg namanya "Frost".

Forst si Earl of Chillingsworth, bujangan terakhir dari Lord of Vice, temen2nya pada ude merit dan py anak, pada sibuk sendiri2 dan malah ada wacana bakalan nutup NOK, club judi mereka yg beken itu. Frost lagi lontang-lantung kaga jelas deh, die punya mistress yg cantik tp die jg bosen, nah pas lagi dijalan die liat lady lagi tarik2an sama ahjussi (hallah bapak2) di jalanan, si lady ini nolongin anak tirinya si bpk yg mo dijual gt sama bpknya.

Lord Chillingsworth aka Frost is a scoundrel of the highest order. A fighter, gambler and a man-whore. His seduction skills are almost legendary as his friendship with his friends. The infamous Lords of Vice, well former Lords of Vice. He is the only unmarried one now and some of his friends are also fathers. This fact still boggles Frost's mind. In this story someone is trying to take away the Lords club, Nox. Frost and his cohorts know who it is but don't take the man seriously at first. There's something else that has Frost's attention.

Emily Cavell is on a mission. Her mission is to destroy a man named Frost. Her sister whispered his name as she lay dying at her own hands. Emily makes her sister a promise to avenge her heartbreak against the man who seduced and ruined her. See, this is Emily's Season as she is almost on the shelf at age twenty. While her family searches for her a husband, she searches for Frost. After a chance meeting with Lord Chillingsworth (she doesn't know that he's Frost) she finds herself attracted to Chilllingsworth.

There was a little mystery to this novel and I enjoyed it. I read a few online reviews before starting this that were less than favorable. Honestly, I don't agree with those reviews. This was a good book and a nice finish to the series. Frost was his usual self and Emily a great opposite for him. Scenes with the other Lords and their families were entertaining. You also got a little more of Frost's backstory, which was nice since he's always been so aloof. I have so enjoyed this series and it has always been an auto-buy for me. I will miss it and hope to have the time to someday re-read it. If you want a steamy historical series, this is it for you.

“Hunter may be easy to distract, but I’m not,” Dare interjected. “What is going on between you and Emily Cavell?”
“Nothing.”
At least not at the moment.
Dare’s eyes widened in growing wonder. “It’s worse than I thought.”
Frost did not have to feign his bewilderment. “How so?”
Hunter slowly nodded. “You’re correct, Dare. How long has this been going on?”
Both gentlemen were daft. “I have no idea what you are babbling about.”
“Hmm … defensive,” Hunter noted. “And he’s clearly lying. Another sign.”

I have been anticipating this story from the very first book of this series. I didn't realize it is the final book of this series. Among all the Lords of Vice, Frost is the one who most definitely got my attention in all ways. I was annoyed, sad and inlove with this notorious lord. He is clearly someone who thinks of only his needs above all. He flirts with all the ladies he thinks is lovely. He attempted to kiss Juliana, successfully kissed Grace and has even bedded Catherine. The lord has no gentleman traits in his bone. Much to the surprise of the readers particularly me, he didn't get the virginity of Emily even when he know that she would not mind giving it to him. Dear readers, the infamous Earl of Chillingsworth is a gentleman indeed! It just takes the right woman.
I don't know if this story is really so beautiful or I'm just blinded because I just fall in love with Frost. The man can make a touch here and there as sexy and hot as making love. Lol.
God, I love this story. The wait was worth it! Frost_Drool*

I've been around since the beginning of the Vice... I only stayed because of the anticipation I had for the long-awaited Frost tale. What a let-down. The series itself peaked with Book 1 and it failed to ever return to that B- fare. Yet, Frost's character afforded so many possibilities that I stuck around, hoping for that last really great read. What we were given was the same repetitive character descriptions we've had over the last four years, a very weak story with little romance and a razor-thin mystery, and lots of trite "revisit old characters" filler. The worst is it seems we lost a chapter or two in between Chapters 25 and 26. I'm not sure if it's the author at fault or if the editor is to blame... but at this point, I don't care. On the plus side, I did really appreciate the description of the public house's pond as being mistaken for the "devil's bunghole." I will certainly make an effort to work that term into conversation! At any rate, I'm pretty certain I am done reading Hawkins - what a disappointment. 1 star, I guess

I would have given this book 5 stars but it seemed like a large part of the story was missing. There was this ominous meeting between two of the characters at the end of a chapter. Then beginning of the next chapter skipped ahead a week or two later, giving just some vague details about what took place. I had to go back and check to see if I had lost my place or something. The book wasn't that long, so why chop it so ineptly?

Plus I really expected the hero of the story to put up much more of a fight than he did. He had been such a jerk for 6 books, then when he gets his own story, he's suddenly sweetness and light? Totally out of character in my opinion. I thought this book would be much darker, in keeping with the character that had been developing over the course of the series.

I loved this series and I think Ms Hawkins is a great writer, but this last book was somewhat disappointing. I really expected much more than what was written.

I didn't like this one bit. *sigh* I was waiting for Frost's story for what seems ages and for what? I didn't feel a damn thing.
Where was the romance? I ask myself.
This is not the Frost I've read about from the previous books. Is this suppose to be the last in the series?
Whatever happened to the Epilogue? I thought they had cut off some chapters in my ebook. I was confused for a sec.
So disappointed with this one.

I really enjoyed this series, and Frost was, naturally my favorite, for his unrepentant persona and his ruthless direct personality. I was glad to see that he was still his usual 'sweet' self in this book, and I liked the heroine he ended up with. I would have liked a bit more description in parts and it seemed choppy like some of the others, but it was still a good read :)

I have to say, I am a little disappointed. Frost has been my favorite all along and I just felt this book was lacking something. Being how it's Frost's book, and how the opening scene was, I thought it would've been more sexual or something..

I really enjoyed the first half and sadly the second half really disappointed me. I feel like this book had so much potential. There were a few details that irritated me - such as gross violations of propriety (no chaperones ladies maids, etc), how soft and complaisant the heroine was by the end.... but really I was going along with it until the heroine succumbed to seduction so easily and under her parents roof.... 😳😒and certainly too soon in the story. It seemed like the character had done a complete about-face in personality after this. She didn't even expect him to want her marry her by the end of the book after she had been "ruined" a few times... she just acquiesced to all his advances, zero protest. I dunno, she behaved just like her sister, and I was half expecting a pregnancy scare in the book.

The book was OK.... I wanted to give it a 3 but I really think that I've read better books that I gave a 3 so I suppose I'd give it a 2.5 - not terrible but not great just Ok.

Fun easy read

This was fun. I enjoyed watching the legendary Frost's downfall so to speak. I don't think he resisted nearly as hard as I thought he would. I will say that A.H. gave him a much milder personality than what we see of him in the previous 6 books. But I will never forget how he did Juliana. He tricked and schemed to get her in the hands of a violent dangerous man, even watched the man assault her and did nothing to help her. He didn't feel one ounce of regret to the point of boasting about what happened to her. Then in this book he starts out involving himself in the rescue of 2 women he didn't even know who were being assaulted. So out of character. But overall, this was a good story and I enjoyed it.

DISCLAIMER: I didn't realize this was the last novel in the series, so I STARTED with it (oh, well).

Storyline - good enough to keep my eyes glued to the page. I read it in one sitting!

Characters - Frost was not very complex. He was referred to as "scandalous" and a "Lord of Vice"...but I didn't really get that. Maybe that was more evident in the prior novels? Not sure. Emily's character was lovely- not much to say there. Again, not very complex.

The steamy bits - Hawkins did the damn thing. Definite Bridgerton vibes and I loved it.

**Editing note - Bad editing, but errors weren't TOO distracting. Just drove me nuts haha.

Save the best for last

This is book 7 of this series and the best to me. Lord Chillingworth, aka Frost, is the last single member of the seven man club called Lords of Vice. Emma Cavell comes to town for a personal vendetta against a man called Frost. Emily has also taken up the cause to close the gaming hell owned by the Lords of Vice. Of course Frost thinks the best way to keep her from being interested in closing the gaming hell , is to seduce her. Absolutely loved this story, filled with romance, ballroom intrigues, seduction and it is so steamy.
