Marita Fowler began her literary career writing a comedic action series, titled THE FAT ADVENTURE SERIES. She grew up in rural Tennessee and drew from her small town upbringing to craft FAT ASSASSINS and FAT BODYGUARDS. However, she has recently tapped into her darker muse and released the first book (titled ADDERWALD) in the ANAGENESIS SERIES - a steampunk, post-apocalyptic, zombie series.
I received Adderwald through Goodreads giveaway on 1/22.
I first judged Adderwald by the cover, which I know is frowned on... but it's gorgeous. I expected a steampunk zombie novel. It's not. What it is is a well written, if a bit brief, novella. At 55 pages, it ended just when it was getting good. That being said, I want to read the second book.
The book starts with a vomit-worthy scene of zombie hunter training where the characters have to rub "zombie innards" on themselves to mask their human scent and continues with graphic action scenes. I like that this story doesn't focus on the beginning outbreak but is set decades after the first attacks in a world where humans have learned to survive in caves.
I would recommend this series to those who enjoy zombie stories and have limited time. Just looked it up, it's $0.99 on amazon kindle or $3.99 print and it's well worth that... I would have given it an extra half star but goodreads doesn't allow that. That half of a star is for making me wait for the second book.
Won this book with Good Reads Giveaway. I gave a low rating only due to it being 5 chapter book with 55 pages. I will give to my 11 year old son to read I think he will enjoy alot more than I did.
