Cat and Dog A Cajun Tale

Rate this book
Clarence “Cat” Touchette, an elderly and very rich Cajun farm owner, is acting as campaign advisor for his friend, Simon, who is a candidate for parish sheriff. When Simon is threatened with blackmail, Clarence, with the help of his blind brother-in-law, J.O., and his friend and employee, Tee Man, investigates the threat. Cat resents getting old and irritability invades his personality in dealing with his family, friends, adversaries and associates. The discovery of a stray dog among his cattle affects him in a manner that even he has difficulty understanding. In his first novel, James Ory Theall weaves a sometimes humorous, light hearted tale of intrigue about relationships, aging, small town politics, illegal activities, and even murder. This book contains descriptions of violence and some strong language.

Every sensory detail of life in a Cajun parish is unconsciously absorbed as one reads this tale. From the jitterbug to the gumbo, the buzz of a town square before a local election to the quiet dusk of the bayou, one is immersed in the culture of this story. The author is blind, as is Clarence "Cat" Touchette's good friend J.O., and neither are lacking in any skill.

Cat finds an abandoned collie in his pasture and aims to destroy it-- but, like all things we love, it grows on him. Incidentally, the dog may provide a clue to an unsolved murder-- One Cat hopes to solve as his friends, one by one, end up threatened, blackmailed, or worse.

This book will leave you on the edge of your seat, and craving a good amount of po' boys and muffelata.

Uninteresting, couldn't finish

Lots of mundane details about "western clothes", "sport utility vehicle (we know what SUV means), a grumpy guy with frequent trips to the bathroom, and a guy who is always hungry. Didn't feel anything for the characters and the story was uninteresting. Gave up around the 20% mark.
