A Present for Daddy

Rate this book
Six months after his wife leaves him, Bob Jansen finds himself spending the holidays with his parents in the town where he grew up. With him is his seven year old daughter, Jenna, who sometimes seems to be handling her mother's absence better than Bob is himself. But he's worried that, in her letter to Santa, Jenna has asked the jolly old elf for something Bob knows he can't pull off. He's afraid she wants her mother back for the holiday.

While shopping for his daughter's Christmas presents, Bob runs into Dave Knarr, an old friend. They used to be best buds in high school, before Julia, Bob's soon-to-be ex-wife, came between them. The two men catch up over drinks, and before the evening ends, Dave makes his real feelings for Bob known.

If Bob is shocked to learn Dave has always been attracted to him, he's more surprised by his own reaction. Even if he's willing to take another shot at romance, what will his daughter think of his old friend?

This was a story about best friends reconnecting. One is divorced with a young daughter. The other has been carrying a torch for seven years. I liked their relationship but because of the length of the story the gfy aspect seemed really rushed and unreal. Bobby is all...okay yes let's do this. So that didn't really work for me as much as I would have liked. Still if this had been a longer story that gave these two men more time to reconnect other than just a day I think my rating would have been higher.

The story is about a soon to be divorced man moving back home with his parents for Christmas. He is destitute, and trying to make the most of the holiday with what he has. So when he is out shopping for his daughter he meets up with his best friend from high school.
So they go out to a bar to reminisce, and a long story short he gets drunk ends up at the friends house and passes out in his bed. Though he doesn't pass out before he gets a kiss from his old buddy, and huzzah he wakes up the next morning, has a heart to heart which leads to insta-love gay for you.

I really wanted to read a fluffy romance, and what I got was a waste of time. The main character was quite boring, his daughter annoying, and his love interest embarrassingly sad.

So yeah, this was mostly bullshit, and I don't recommend it when there are so many better things to read like the inactive ingredient list for medication, and shampoo bottles.

It was nearly a 3 but too many fillers that were obviously 'duh' moments

“Ask him now,” my mother insists. “We usually eat at six.”
(Bobby has moved back home, he lived with his parents until he married.. Why would he need the 'We usually eat at six')

“There’s a spot just over the bridge into Petersburg. Leo’s, I think it’s called. It’s a dive but they have cheap beer.
(Leo's 'he thinks its called' DUH It's been called the same thing for many years,, why would he 'think its called')

“It’s okay, Mrs. J. I picked some things up for you guys, too, while I was at work yesterday.”
(Dave hadn't even met up with Bobby whilst he was still at work 'yesterday'.. So why buy presents.. Did he have a crystal ball showing the future?)

And the gay for you in a split second was as realistic as an early animation.. One breath 'I'm not gay'..In the next 'You're hot' and love blooms)

Too quick Christmas story.

Two men who were joined at the hips during their high school years. Bob and Dave lose contact, but there's magic in the air. They reconnect and the parts of the puzzle fall into place. Bob is more surprised than anyone else.

The concept is cute and right up my alley, but perhaps too short and needed a little polishing to make it a more believable story (I agree with reviews about the gfy/bi-awakening needing at least a little more time/time skip perhaps). But it was definitely a cozy, feel-good, light read which is in itself sometimes hard to come by! So it gets two stars for that alone. Sometimes that's all a person really wants/needs!

Cosy and sweet. I liked the kind mother.
This is the second story I’ve read that has a Richmond setting. A shoutout to the author from a former ‘Gertie Girl’.

Ok I feel I have to review this book, I really expected more from this book. I got to the end and I shook my Nook thinking this can't be the end as there is way to much story left to tell. It had all the parts needed for a great book... Christmas, Childhood friends, a crappy ex-wife and even a sweet child. I am not sure what happened but it could have been so much better. Unless I am missing something and there is another book that comes after this one, if so please tell me because I really wanted so much more from this book.
