this was likely published awhile ago, but the font is too tiny! otherwise solid introduction

some memorable quotes:
"But Scotland was not a nation-- yet. That lay in the future, although the resistance to Edward I contain the seeds of nationalism." (30)

"The whole scheme to colonise Panama collapsed in 1700, convincing many Scots that they could not prosper in international trade without the access to imperial markets which a union would give them." (57)

"But Scotland lost her sovereignty, her parliament and her coinage. She was still a nation, but suddenly a nation without a state." (57)

"There's some say that we won, some say that they won, some say that none won at a', man; But one thing I'm sure, that at Sheriffmuir, A battle there was which I saw, man; And we ran, and they ran, and they ran, And we ran; and they ran awa', man!" - Murdoch McLennan (58)

very interesting, and seemingly objective summary of Scottish history, and particularly how religion affected events

Richard Killeen is the man.

Simplified stories of Scottish history, good illustrations & pictures for learning who's-who & what's-what in Scotland. Got this at the annual Scottish-Irish Faire in Midland, Texas, in mid-March 2011. (Also got the Ireland version of this book.) I was interested in reading about the Scottish part of my heritage.

Perfect for a general overview of Scottish history. I picked this up at Edinburgh Castle and it gave me a great outline of events which put into perspective most of the historical items I've been seeing in Scottish museums.

As the title says, it is short--just what I was looking for a little background for a trip to Scotland.
