Niki Slobodian knows loss. She knows tragedy. But she has never known this kind of pain. After the war the Archangel Michael waged on her city, Niki is dealing with the loss of her loved ones. And the haunting suspicion that everything was her fault. As well as her new duty to help all the lost souls cross over.
But when Niki's only living friend, Bobby Gage, comes up missing, she has to take action. She enlists the help of Lucifer and together they learn that Bobby has been tracking Kane, the man who murdered his family, and is now killing again, leaving a trail of mutilated corpses all across the globe. And with the power to disappear unnoticed, it seems an impossible feat to find him and stop him.
But Niki is familiar with the impossible. And she would do anything to help her only living friend. Anything.

Again a 5 star rating for JL Murray, but the truth is that this book in fact deserves a 6 star rating. Niki Slobodian fans will understand what I mean when they read The Devil was an Angel.
This is a beautiful story which is beautifully written and in my opinion this was the best Niki Slobodian book yet. J.L. Murray did an excellent job as always.
The first few chapters are extremely emotional, and I strongly advise readers to have a box of tissues nearby, but this is so necessary to tell the rest of the story. The story is a continuation of book 3, for those who would like to read this series you will have to start from book one. From page one the author has you hooked on the story and ready to turn the pages. The character development in this book is amazing and beautifully done. The introduction of new characters is brilliant, some you will love and some you will hate, she also brings back characters from previous books and lets us know and understand them better.
The twists and revelations were so unexpected, I don’t know why I keep assuming that things will go in a certain direction, J.L. Murray never does what you expect, but the end result is a magnificent book better than before.
Today's review is on The Devil Was an Angel by J.L. Murray
I have to say that I was really on the fence about this fourth installment of the Niki Slobodian series. I was just so saddened at the loss of Sam in book three that I didn't know if I wanted to find out what would happen next. As Mrs. Murry will attest, I basically begged and pleaded for her to bring him back and to let him and Niki find happiness. All I got back though was "you never know what might happen." So here I was, book in hand; or in my case Kindle in hand, full of anxiety and trepidation.
Finally I couldn't wait any longer. I picked up my Kindle, found a comfortable chair, and turned to page one. Within a few pages I then had to get up and grab the box of tissue. Yes, Murray had me in tears from the very beginning. Not only that though, she also had my attention and kept it to the very last page.
Sam is gone and Niki is now Death. She is no longer human. It's her job to see that the souls of the dead move on. Unable to reach Bobby and still grieving Sam, Niki is on the edge of loosing it. She feels lost and alone. But her job must go one. The pull to the spirits is just to strong. Especially the one that pulls her to a familiar hospital. The hospital where her Godmother Sofi is in. How much loss can one woman handle?
Seeking solace at The Deep Blue Sea, Niki pulls out the Murphy Bed that Sam had created for them and finally falls asleep where she dreams about Sam. But is it a dream? Yes and no. Because Sam gave a part of his soul to Niki he is always with her, that is until she lets him go. And because she is at The Deep Blue Sea; which is also a part of him, the connection is stronger.
As if grieving the loss of Sofi and Sam wasn't enough, Bobby Gage is missing, heinous murders are happening all over the world, and Lucifer comes calling. No wonder she felt like she was loosing it! Add the guilt Niki carries over Sam's death and the guilt she feels for falling in love with his brother.
Looking back, I realize that it was never really going to be Sam and Niki. If it were don't you think the titles would be different? After all, the don't say "Between Death and the Deep Blue Sea", "Death Was a Gentleman", "Before Death Knows You're Dead", or even "Death Was an Angel". It was always gong to be the king of Hell wasn't it?
Have no fear fans of this great series. There is still plenty of action, plenty of drama, and plenty of tears ahead for this series. I just hope my heart can handle it all. Keep your eyes pealed for Murray's fifth book in the Niki Slobodian saga, The Devil's Backbone (releasing 2014)
You have Niki for now Lucifer. You better take good care of her. You don't want to make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
Another amazingly awesome read by the amazingly awesome author J.L. Murray, whose blend of horror and fantasy is an amazingly awesome thing. (Yes, I am stuck on that phrase this morning.) The Devil Was An Angel is 4th in the Niki Slobodian urban fantasy series of angels, demons, ghosts, and paranormal detectives. In this installment, we get to deal with a lot of the fallout of the last book - Sam is dead, Niki has become Death and is riddled with guilt and sadness, and Gage has gone missing. In addition, in her new job of sending ghosts over to the other side, Niki is discovering a series of grisly murders that apparently have no rhyme or reason. And, suddenly, Sam's brother Lucifer is looking really good in his roguish outfit.
I love the storytelling and the world building in this book. It's right up my proverbial demonic alley, so to speak. But I struggled to give this book this high a rating, because for the life of me I STILL cannot stand the character of Niki. Four books later, I still find her rash and impulsive, and now here she's a whiny cry baby who can't seem to get over herself for chapters and chapters. "Deal with it" is a great expression that the book uses. And then....and then I think of the author's purpose and my emotional response to the main character. If I can feel so much for a fictional character, well, damn, that's good writing. And, how else is Niki supposed to grow except to have flaws and annoying, potentially destructive traits. And then, I tell myself, "Self, I'm not supposed to like her. She's the anti-heroine. She's mean and selfish and you're probably slightly jealous."
And then I give the book 5 stars. Because it rocks that much.
It's a shame there's only one book left in this series because it's really taken off. The first two books kind of just seemed like the author warming up and trying to figure out what she wanted to do. Then in the 3rd book she seemed to find her footing and this one was just awesome. THE REST OF THE REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS so read at your own risk.
I know a lot of people were rather upset that Sam died, but he never really grew on me and I was always just a bit upset that a series where the word devil is in every title didn't actually have the devil in it. So I was really happy that Lucifer had a large part in this book, even though the plot here is not generally the type that I necessarily like. But it really worked here.
me reading any other book: ugh, why does the author feel like they need to redeem Lucifer with some awful romance me reading this book: okay well you see the tHING IS -
I think Niki and Lucifer's relationship really worked for me because it's not like he's just some horrible monster and she's this pure innocent flower trying to ~make him a better man~ or whatever. They both are people who have done some awful things in their past and are still put in situations where they continue to have to do things they don't want to even though they're both trying to be better people. And they both kind of helped each other with their issues in different ways so it's more of an equal partnership and they're helping each other, which is just so rare when it comes to M/F relationships in most books.
Anyway also loved all the stuff with Bobby's backstory and Kane and all the demon politics. I was skeptical when I started this series but Murray has managed to come up with a really interesting take on angels and demons and I can't wait to read the last book.
Well, this time I took Sam's betrayal a lot easier. Still sad tho.
1st read from July 26 to 27, 2013
Damn. Another awesome book and now I have to wait a year for the next one. What can I say? This was brilliant as always. I simply love this story. Niki is one of my favorite characters and the more I know about her, Lucifer and Gage, the more I want to read about them. They are absolutely fascinating and the main plot is creative, fast-paced and incredibly exciting. I honestly thought this one was going to be hard for me after Sam's death. I thought this story simply wouldn't be able to recover from such a loss and I would end up giving up the whole thing. I'm now glad I didn't. Unlike other readers, I'm not surprised by Niki's interest in Lucifer. For one, I love Lucifer. I'm always curious about books where authors dare to write about him. Second, I was crazy about Sam but I did wonder about a lot of things he said and did. I always had an impression that he didn't really show his true colors to Niki. I was really sad to know how far he took things with her. Really messed up so I can't say I'm not rooting for Lucifer. He's crazy but nevertheless seems the more normal character we've had for awhile. They seem good together. Can't wait to learn more. Of course her new powers have to be mentioned as well...a mixture of bad-ass with messed up, I think. God. 2014 looks like a thousand years away. I want that book now!

There really are no words to describe how awesomely-epic this book is. Once in a while you will come across a book and just know that its gonna be big, this is such a book. At the end of book three I really did wonder how things were gonna go but did not see any of it coming at all, I was totally blind sided but in the best way. This really is the best in the series so far. I found myself days (and several books) later still thinking bout parts of the story that stood out. The book really was emotional and the characters, once again totally came to life. I was unable to put it down and nothing got done until it was finished and even then, I had to just sit for a while and let it all sink while I sadly returned to my everyday mundane life, and compared to what had just happened everyday events really were mundane. It really was a roller coaster, and you are very likely to cry at least once whilst reading it, I know I did, more than once in fact. The development of the story was natural and at no point did I feel like things didn't fit, the story flowed seamlessly. Already looking forward to what comes next, cause I'm sure there are gonna be so many surprises in store. One of my top books of the year by far.
I think the minor UF genre has its own gems. And I found JL Murray's Niki Slobodan series such. The fourth book deals with the aftermath of the war between Angels and Devils (more or less). Sam is dead and Niki is left with his job, his memories and guilt.
This is mostly a "passage" story in which the world is "righted" after the near Armageddon and characters learn a few very unpleasant truths. I have to say that this series has no overly overt overall arch (excuse the pun...I'm too sleepy to care :-) and its books are concluded in themselves. But you clearly see the way the characters change and grow with each new story. They're not inert and unchanging.
I admit I'm not fully on the Sam upheaval. It does seem a little bit too convenient. But to be honest I should read again book 1-3 and see if I hadn't missed a few clues. :)
I chose the 5 Star rating for this because I really like the Author and I could actually feel the Anger and the Love between 2 opposites that you would think would never hook up. I could feel every emotion I could smell the flesh burning and you are the main person so when I read books I like to be able to smell the good and the bad and I like to have my mind where I can see and hear everything even though it can get to be too much. J.L. Murray will not disappoint you. There are surprises in this book that I had not seen coming this novel will wrap you in its pages and it won't let go until the end well it didn't let me go for a long time after I read it you will have to experience for yourself.
Who is good and who is the bad? I love how everything mix up and then when you think you've everyone figured out good and bad change again. It's unsettling and gives quite a rush of adrenaline every time, maybe because you realize that the orientation has changed just in the middle of a life/death situation.
I'm not really sure how I feel about the Sam thing. I don't really like how immature Niki is about her feeling and her understanding of her feelings. Also the star is taken of because sometimes it's really not clear what is happening, how did we go from point A to point B? How did it happen that we went from guy A to guy B? It's at times confusing.
I really enjoyed this book and although I haven't read any other books in the series it wasn't hard to follow or figure out who the characters were and what was going on. Niki was a strong female character and I loved her. She didn't take crap from anyone but she was a bitch or a child about stuff which happens a lot when authors try to make their heroine's strong. I loved Lucifer as well. He was crazy but honest and I think that is what Niki needed at the time. The story was action packed and interesting. I will have to read the previous books and continue the series as well.
I think that this has been the best book in the series and I am looking forward to the next installment of Niki Slobadian novels. I love the fact that Niki is not perfect and she feels so deeply, also that the relationships she has are broken but they still work. This series kind of reminds me of Stacia Kane's Downside novels it has the same darkness although it has more angels, demons and spirits. There is action, mystery, love and self growth, really what more can you ask for :)
Wow, reading turned me upside down. Niki has lots of problems to solve and a new father. As usual I am not disappointed and counting the days for the next one to come out.
I, obviously, haven't read this because it hasn't been finished, BUT taking the author and the three previous books . . . I have no doubt it will be fantastic!
The plot was solid, but went in a direction that wasn’t for me. Hundreds of descriptions of tragic, gory death scenes, which I started to skip after a while. Almost all the scenes and battles were in the god realms and got pretty abstract. The romance was so out of the blue it wasn’t very moving, but at least she ditched the dead weight!
Well Niki is back, still grieving for Sam and trying to reconcile herself to being death. Talk about an adjustment, her life was stressful enough when she was alive but being death is definitely no picnic. So much is going on in this book, dealing with her guilt over Sam sacrificing himself to save her and feeling like she is losing everyone she cares about, Niki is shocked when Sam's brother who happens to be Lucifer shows up asking for her help. How can she possibly help anyone when she can't seem to save herself from falling apart. There is always tons of action and so many stories interwoven together. Bobby's true self is finally revealed and some other secrets come to light that I was quite surprised to learn about. Throw into the mix a few demons hell bent on a power trip, a necromancer stirring up evil magic, hearing Sam's voice in her head all the time and life is never dull. Niki seems to find trouble wherever she goes even in the depths of hell. Sometimes even in the darkest moments, there is light and Niki must choose between her feelings for Sam and taking a chance on a new beginning. Will she get her HEA, read it yourself and find out?
"The Devil Was An Angel" finds our Herione, Nikki Slobodian reeling with her new job as death. She is hurting, weighed down by helping various souls cross over to the other side. To make matters worse, she is seeing an increasing trend of violent murders being committed on families including babies and unfortunately the murders are escalating.
Just as Nikki feels she can take no more, she hears Samael talking to her. He wants her to bring him back to life but first he warns her that her friend, Bobby Gage is in trouble. Nike sees Bobby at her godmother's funeral and he us fighting with a strange man wearing a fedora. Meanwhile, Lucifer has come to ask for Nikki's assistance. While she is suspicious, she agrees to help him. In turn, he helps her find peace in her job as death. Together they find.......what?........love? This is the part that bothered me, the instantaneous attraction between Nukki and Lucifer after only one day. It just didn't ring true.
For the most part I enjoyed this story but wish it hadn't been so darkly written as well as a severe lack of action. Hopefully, book four will correct this. I really hope so!
I'd say this was a great end to the series, but I get the distinct impression that it isn't actually the end. Rather, The Devil was an Angel is simply the most recent book published in the series. I'd certainly be interested in reading more if Ms. Murray decides to write them, but I'd be disappointed if it turned into one of those series that never actually concludes. I find that so unsatisfying.
I was plenty satisfied with this book, however. Niki continued learning about herself and her abilities. She grew a lot as a character, especially around the matter of acceptance. Lucifer was an interesting incarnation of himself. I really felt bad for poor Sam though, despite all his misdeeds and the first half of the book is almost devastatingly sad.
There is quite a bit more gore in this book as the previous ones. I'm not particularly bothered by this, but some might be. But Ms. Murray's writing remained exceptional 'till the end. Thumbs up.
This series must be read in order. The first book is Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea. The second book is The Devil Is A Gentleman. The third book is Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. This is the fourth book. I can't wait to read the fifth (and sadly final) book The Devil's Backbone!
With Sam Unsung Niki doesn't really know what to do. Grief is eating her alive, Sofi won't wake up, and Bobby is missing. Being Death is painful and tragic. She keeps finding whole families brutally murdered all over the world... Their faces smashed in and blood everywhere. Who is killing all these families? And why? Where is Bobby? Why does she feel so odd about Lucifer? What will happen to her now? Is she Immortal? How can she live in a world where almost everyone she has ever cared for is dead? Does she eben have a choice anymore?
I enjoyed this very different paranormal book about demons, death, and Lucifer. The writing was good and kept me reading at a fast pace; however, there were a few grammatical, typos, and areas that could use some improvement. Overall, it was a good read and I look forward to more of this series.
