Der Teratologe

Rate this book

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Edward Lee is an American novelist specializing in the field of horror, and has authored 40 books, more than half of which have been published by mass-market New York paperback companies such as Leisure/Dorchester, Berkley, and Zebra/Kensington. He is a Bram Stoker award nominee for his story "Mr. Torso," and his short stories have appeared in over a dozen mass-market anthologies, including THE BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES OF 2000, Pocket's HOT BLOOD series, and the award-wining 999. Several of his novels have sold translation rights to Germany, Greece, and Romania. He also publishes quite actively in the small-press/limited-edition hardcover market; many of his books in this category have become collector's items. While a number of Lee's projects have been optioned for film, only one has been made, HEADER, which was released on DVD to mixed reviews in June, 2009, by Synapse Films.

Lee is particularly known for over-the-top occult concepts and an accelerated treatment of erotic and/or morbid sexual imagery and visceral violence.

He was born on May 25, 1957 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Bowie, Maryland. In the late-70s he served in the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division, in Erlangen, West Germany, then, for a short time, was a municipal police officer in Cottage City, Maryland. Lee also attended the University of Maryland as an English major but quit in his last semester to pursue his dream of being a horror novelist. For over 15 years, he worked as the night manager for a security company in Annapolis, Maryland, while writing in his spare time. In 1997, however, he became a full-time writer, first spending several years in Seattle and then moving to St. Pete Beach, Florida, where he currently resides.

Of note, the author cites as his strongest influence horror legend H. P. Lovecraft; in 2007, Lee embarked on what he calls his "Lovecraft kick" and wrote a spate of novels and novellas which tribute Lovecraft and his famous Cthulhu Mythos. Among these projects are THE INNSWICH HORROR, "Trolley No. 1852," HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD, GOING MONSTERING, "Pages Torn From A Travel Journal," and "You Are My Everything." Lee promises more Lovecraftian work on the horizon.

Medical experiment nymphomaniac mutants run amok.

For quite some time, I almost morally objected to rating this novella. Hardcore horror was fresh to me when I first read this sickening and fascinating, I almost want to say, porn parody of The Island of Dr. Moreau and I was in repulsed awe that something like this was actually published. I read on in morbid curiosity and, like solving the Lament Configuration, there was no turning back.

Edward Lee and Wrath James White are undoubtedly largely responsible for the excess and excesses of the modern extreme horror genre. It predates many of the popular, shock-core names that have gained traction on social media, but it is by no means tame in comparison. Many aspiring horror writers must have read their foul work in astonishment and said to themselves, “wait, can they do that? Can I do that?”

And they did.

An extremely wealthy entrepreneur seeks to both provoke and invoke God by presenting the most atrocious and evil acts he can imagine. Respected religious leaders have depraved sexual relations with genetically monstrous human beings. Drugs are used to stimulate all parties, willing or unwilling. A reporter and photographer are invited to the entrepreneur's manor under the guise of writing a story about him. However, both men have been tricked and seek a way to save the world from a despicably evil man. Edward Lee and Wrath James White have seamlessly put together a story of pure grotesquery and wanton debauchery. The results are shocking, page-turning and satisfying in the end. This novella is NOT for the squeamish or the sensitive.

SQUICK!

You may want to take a long, LONG shower after reading this one.

It's not necessarily all that GORY, per se...it's pretty "clean" in that regard. Yet this is still one of-- Oh, who am I kidding? It's THE grossest book I've ever read (so far). It's so profoundly over-the-top, with the most disgusting scenes being described... You know the saying "don't go there," like the "there" in question is the implied other side of a line that shouldn't be crossed? Yeah, well, this book builds a SHOPPING MALL "there!"

And yet, you may have noticed that I gave this book a four out of five-star rating; that's because..it's really well-written. It's a genuinely good book, withs ome interesting plotting and some mysterious elements that really helped elevate its neat mythos to stay in conversation amidst all the repulsion.

No folks, this is NOT a light read...but it's definitely a memorable one.

NOTE: I read this book in less than a day in mid-July of 2007, at Necon 27, when Edward Lee and Wrath James White were two of the guests of honor. I was with four friends, one of whom (Chelsea) had picked the book up and had started reading it; she liked what she read, and recommended it to the rest of us. Another friend (Cheryl) picked up a copy and started reading it, and also enjoyed it. Then on the way to the dealer's room, a very curious Jason and myself decided we wanted to get it. I remember Jason reading it as we walked, laughing, and saying "Nice!" We practically ran like kids to a toystore to get to the dealer's room - and Jason & I bought the last two copies. Later that afternoon, we were all sitting lined up beside each other, taking turns laughing as we read parts of the book, when all of a sudden, renowned horror veteran Jack Ketchum walks in, sees us all reading (the same book), and he took his sunglasses off and said, "...what the FUCK is this?" Needless to say, it became a race to finish the book in one day (I was the last), and ultimately, we ended up concluding in the mid-evening. If anything...I didn't want to have to wake up and realize I had to read more of THIS book the next day!

As a long time horror fan I have pretty much read it all, and as a long time Edward Lee fan nothing really shocks me anymore. I started sneaking my mother's horror paperbacks to school when I was 11 years old, which means I have now read over 30 years worth of horror novels (gasp!)In all those years, and all those novels, this is the only book that ever made me gag. And I do mean, I literally gagged, and thought for a moment I was actually going to toss my cookies. If that was the reaction Lee was going for, well kudos to you Mr. Lee.

I don't know what the hell I should rate this one. The acts in this read we're atrocious, blasphemous, and altogether wrong. The first couple of pages were...vomit inducing. This was like watching a car accident; you saw it coming, you knew it was gonna be bad and that the passengers were really hurt, but you looked anyway. I wouldn't rec this to anyone that knows someone in a nursing home or a handicap person who cannot take care of themselves and you are sensitive about it because this book would be your worst nightmare. A lot of the sexual acts were not consensual because they were drugged. Read At Your Own Risk!

This could be the pinnacle of extreme-horror. It probably is. It’s on a whole different level of, well, everything. This story contains the most repugnant and visceral chapter 1 of anything I’ve ever read. And it sets the tone for the horrors to come. My second time reading, it’s such an awesome story.

Edward Lee, would you marry me?

This book has it all: beyond disgusting scenes, deformed people in all senses, and a bit of horror in every word you read. A different kind of horror than anything I've ever read before, though. A kind that messes with your head...and your stomach, if you got one.

John Farrington is extremely smart, extremely rich and extremely everything you might think a man should be. There's something he doesn't have, though, but wants: that sort of perfection religious fanatics only attribute to God. He wants that. He wants God himself to come and show it to him, and has the perfect plan to infuriate God through Atrocity up to the point where he would simply show up.

There's only one problem there: sometimes you can raise hell and God still might not be watching...

Nightmares come from this

This. Book is what you would least expect. Nightmares derive from such vicious creatures and words given to them. The power of these words delve deep and have you squirming in horror and delight at how good the story is but grotesque it makes you feel as you read all the horrors that happen. An amazing read that has you gripped and enthralled from the very beginning.

Rating 3 out of 5 | B+; Dear sweet Lord! I need to bleach my brain

Warning; Graphical descriptions of perversion, depravity, blasphemy & sodomy. Not meant for light hearted reading

An eccentric billionaire, with the wealth, resources and drive to find God, sets out to do so; damn the consequences. For said purpose, he collects all manner of mutant abominable victimized members of human society, and keeps them in his own version of a house of horrors. He then kidnaps spiritual leaders from various religions & sects, and after drugging them up into sex crazed frenzy, pairs them up with the aforementioned mutated individuals, forcing them to commit heinous, blasphemous, downright depraved acts of sexual perversion. All in a bid to offend God & force him to appear before him.

What the hell did I just read, Seriously! Don't ever pick up this book, unless you have a strong stomach & are desensitized to depravity of the extreme kind. I was barely five pages into the book, and what was written had already made me uncomfortable. And I consider myself to be a veteran of the type of aberrations that inhabit the dark corners of the Internet. (I'm sure there are some people out there, who've experienced things just as troubled in real life, but let us restrict the discussion to the written word)

While at no point was I so disgusted to emanate a physical reaction, I was nonetheless glad there was no one near me, to see the shades that my emotions were jumping around in. Definitely not something you read in a café, or around people in general.

The very first chapter is, imagine the hospital scene in Kill Bill Vol.1, right after the Bride wakes up, and all the things which she was subjected to while in a coma. Now take that, and elevate it (rather denigrate it) to Hell raiser level of sexual depravity, minus the supernatural elements. Then you can begin to imagine the tone of the story.

I mean, while reading it, I was literally ticking off tags from Porn hub in my mind. And let me tell you folks, it's nothing like what the internet presents it to you. The whole story is like a macabre show of gore, bodily fluids & acts of perversion spun into a grotesque display, it's like a car crash, one which disgusts you, but you can't look away from, because it intrigues you just as much. Even though you might be loathe to admit it.

The plot of the story, centered largely around this sexual deviant Billionaire, who is for all intents and purposes an immensely successful, attractive, genetically gifted specimen. But he has this want, or lacking in him, a desire which cannot be filled. Committing acts of extreme depravity merely seems to tickle at his true desire. The more abominable, deviant, depraved and horrifyingly nauseating the act performed, and the more unnatural a partner he performs it, is what is required to make him feel any form of pleasure.

In his twisted, malformed, psychopathic mind, he needs to confront God, whatever be its form or origin, to see the being in whose image humanity was crafted. He wants to view that perfect existence, and having experienced it, wants to elevate himself, shedding the shackles of the moral world and humanity.

The means by which he intends to go about it? By performing & orchestrating incredible acts of blasphemy & sodomy, to shock God so much, that he is forced to show himself. With the resources at his disposal, unfettered by law or society, and having not a shred of morality, empathy or kindness, he views the whole world as his playground, and the people inhabiting it, as pawns to be used to further his hedonistic agenda. He doesn't care what manner of suffering & misery he ends up creating, so long as his goals are met. (Yet another reason, as to while Billionaires are not going to save our world)

Meine Meinung:

[Since GR won't put a zero rating in the calculations, I have to give one star. But in my heart, this novella is:]

☆☆☆☆☆ (0/5 stars)

This makes A Serbian Film seem elegant and artsy by comparison. 🤮🤮🤮

Also, the writing and editing are truly awful: contextually-inappropriate usage of various adjectives, misuses of "than"/"then," apostrophes to indicate plurality, missing quotation marks, magically changing the make and caliber of guns in the middle of action, and swapping in homophones that don't make any sense. I still don't know if the antagonist is named "Farrington" or "Farringworth" because the authors seemed to use each version interchangeably even within the same paragraph.

Don't waste your time on this actual garbage.

Grenzen testen. I have read books by both authors and they delight in providing tales full of horror, gore, depravity and sex. I knew that going to read this book and most of that stuff doesn't really bother me for the most part. However I admit that this book was twisted on a whole new and unexpected level and not in a good way at all.

Abducting people that God favours like nuns and priests, spiritual leaders and people of good standing in the community, force feeding them with drugs to make them want to rape and violate is bad enough for some readers. To have their victims fed the same drugs, victims who are the most seriously mentally and physically handicapped you can imagine is a whole other matter. Strange as it may sound this was not the worst the book had to offer, not by a long shot. If your idea of fun reading is reading about people doing nasty toilet functions in other people's mouths, then read on and enjoy. Me, this is where I draw a big fat line and say no, as I resist the urge to gag and vomit. I felt sick and started gagging when I read it and just thinking about it as I write this now gives me the same feeling. I don't find that type of thing entertaining, amusing or anything except stomach wrenching, especially with a disabled victim.

There was nothing in this book that I liked. The subject matter and the writing were gross and twisted and I will be more selective about anything by the authors that I choose to read.

I have seen this book come uptime and time again in my horror bookclub and wanted to try these two authors so a collaboration seemed great but 'Geez'.
From the start you are thrown in to witnessing some most depraved sexual acts by a collection of genetically deformed people with priests and nuns, they are all drugged up to force them in to a high state of sexual arousal and then placed together.
The man behind the experiments is billionaire John Farrington who has devised these tests in the hope to offend God in the hope he then confronts him.
So twisted, it had me completely aghast and squirming in horror but also enjoying the plot.
These authors seem to push the boundaries to test your shock and gag reflex with sex and violence but it's not for the sake of it as underlying is political/religious/social reasoning.
Such a extremely disturbing demented story but with depth.
These two authors make a very perverse twisted duo who will haunt your mind. I read it all in one go, I just could not stop it was addictive in a strange morbid curiosity kind of way.
Truly shocking!.

I gave this book one-star based on the fact that it is by far one of the most disgusting, sickening, grossest, ookiest, gag-reflex inducing books I have ever had the displeasure of reading...and yet I read it until the last page! *lol Seriously, the story is engaging enough but I had to literally fight to keep from spilling my stomach contents and that is with an empty stomach.

Basically, the novel involves the most perverse sexual acts imaginable being committed by, to, and between the most grieviously deformed "people" imaginable due to the mad ravings of some psycho millionaire and his obsession to "see God" (or something like that) - SICK, SICK, SICK!!!

I read it once and the minute I was finished I got it as far away from me as possible.

Again, it is not a bad book per se - good enough storyline. But so over the top with the YUCK and EEEWWW that I couldn't really enjoy it.

The cover art doesn't help. *blank stare

He made his way to the place where the freaks had been kept, where indescribable atrocities had transpired and there, just where the angel had told him it would be, bloomed a white lotus.
