Dirty Work is a collection of Cal Innes short stories from well known crime author Ray Banks. After recently finishing the Cal Innes quartet I was delighted to realise that there was an additional book of Innes stories. The short sharp shocks of a short story are a great place to great reacquainted with the weary Manchester PI. We follow Cal as he is hired on a variety of jobs including doing surveillance for DS Donkin, tracking down a kidnapped canine, trying to save a wayward Asian man’s daughter, investigating allegations of child abuse, tangling with fascists and in the final most poignant story recalling his first meeting with Paulo and his final stretch in prison as he tries to help a fellow inmate. It might be dirty work for Cal but it’s fine reading for crime fans. To summarise this is an excellent companion piece to the Cal Innes quartet. Thank you to Blasted Heath publishing for letting readers enjoy the impressive work of Ray Banks.
