GLADIATOR explores the world of the gladiators, from their humble beginnings as slaves to their schooling as gladiators and their often violent death in the arena, and looks at their influence on our lives today.
This quick read has a large amount of information. Having read very little on the subject of gladiators, I sat down and within the hour felt like I learned quite a bit. Who knew, for example, that gladiators were divided into four sub-classes, depending on their rank and accomplishments in the arena? Or the difference between the Samnite and Thracian fighting styles? Or that the gladiator who specialized with the net and trident was called a retiarius, while certain men, called bestiarii fought primarily against beasts instead of men?
GLADIATOR by Richard Watkins is a great primer for the uninitiated, and for the casual reader looking to expand their knowledge, like myself. As a writer, it has my juices flowing with story ideas.
"The gladiators raised their weapons to the emperor and called out, “Hail, Emperor! We who are about to die salute thee!” Trumpets blared, the men paired off, and with a clash of swords began the deadly combats of the gladiators of ancient Rome. Who were the gladiators? Who were these men who entered the ring and faced almost certain death? What were their lives like? How did they become gladiators? Why did they fight? In this compelling and riveting book, the world of the gladiators is revealed. Gladiatorial combats were an important part of the Roman word – for almost 700 years thousands of men fought to the death for the entertainment of the masses and the glory of their rulers. In colossal arenas built throughout the Roman Empire especially for the gladiators, the most violent sporting event in history was also the most popular. From the gladiators' often humble beginnings as slaves to their training in the gladiator schools to their violent deaths in the arena, author and illustrator Richard Watkins explores the fascinating world of the gladiators as well as their lasting influence on our lives today."
Gladiator by Richard Watkins is a book about Gladiators. It tells the history and different types of Gladiators. The types are Samnite, Hoplomachus, Thracian, Marillo, Retiarius, and Secutor. It also tells a day of the gladiators. This book is very interesting and teaching. I recommend this book to people who like fighting.
This book was very informative about the subject of what gladiators did, how they were freed, and the types you would see in the arena. Such as some gladiators fought each other, and animals. Gladiators were usually slaves, prisoners of war, and law breakers that needed to be punished. I think this is a great book for those of you that want to learn more about gladiators and what they did.
It's got more information than the Cambridge textbook, which is great, since it is a topic of extreme interest among the middle and high school students who take Latin. I will be using some of the information to supplement what is presented in the textbook.
We read this book for history. It was very detailed and informative. It obviously spoke of the horrendous violence, but didn't get into too many details or show too much savagery.
