Lemme just say if you are Southern, are from Mississippi or jes love you some fun and humor in your kitchen along with some of the most fattening bacon-filled brown sugar pork fried battered buttered recipes then this book is for you. I am into healthy eating so at first this cook book was a little hard to stomach, by, I adapted quickly as I understand the SPQ lifestyle having been a big fan, SPQ Wannabe and voracious reading of Jill Connor Brown's books since the first one was given to me many many years ago from one of my mother's friends for my birthday. You HAVE to get the audio book to enjoy her narration for the ultimate queen lay experience. BIG SMILE! No other cookbook compares. You MUST add this cookbook to your favorite cookbook collection. Do it now. 🌻😁🌻
Reread after finding it just relaxing on my bookshelf. I feel selfish for having kept this fun to myself all this time. I laughed so much I had to read it in short bursts. It is time to release this treasure into the world.
I got this audiobook from the library. Btw, are we allowed to say the A word if it's part of the title? lol
Sweet Potato Queens Big-Ass Cookbook and Financial Planner written by Jill Conner Browne. Narrated by Jill Conner Browne.
This is a unique way of writing a cookbook and autobiography. She also gives financial tips.
I admit, I read this a few times in the past, it was written in 2003. I thought it was a hoot back then, but now that I am older I can relate to it better, and it's even funnier, if that's possible. It may have been over a decade ago, but a lot of her advice is still good for today. I love how she adds recipes to her stories, which are gems of wisdom. And the recipes, oh my goodness, or should I say egads, according to Jill Conner Browne. I mean I was wishing I had bookmarked or written some of them down. I really need to buy a real copy of this book when I can afford it. She has recipes like Pig(bacon) Candy, and Pralines and Apple Cake. I should warn you, do not read this book on an empty stomach, it will just get louder. She also had some great financial tips, not the fuddy duddy kind, but funny and actually useful kind. I think the older you are, the more you will appreciate this book. But youngsters should read it and learn from it, write things down if you have too. I'm in the Midwest, so I was grateful that Jill Conner Browne explained some words that might confuse us.
Now, Jill Conner Brown does the narration which makes it seem like she's telling you her stories instead of having someone else tell them. I love her accent, tho I guess the Southerners wouldn't notice it? And she does such a great job with the extras, like when there's a sigh, she actually does the sigh, not say it. This is a great example of what storytelling is all about.
This book is in a series, but you don't have to read them in order to understand them. If you are in a mood for a laugh out loud read, then I definitely recommend this one.
Truth in advertising here--if you make any of the recipes you will indeed have a Big Ass. I've never seen so many recipes with multiple sticks of butter, bacon and sweetened condensed milk. I predict in the future this will qualify for food porn reading--I thought it was written in the 1980s, but nope, written in 2002. Even the Queen herself says they have contributed to the obesity problem Mississippi faces among their adults.
A funny read but I think it would be exhausting to keep up the persona these Queens do for very long, and I also think that just one of their books will do me.
As for their financial advise, there are some good points here that I bet Suze Orman herself couldn't argue.
3.5 stars....I found this book humorous and want to try many of the recipes....I mean most call for at least a stick of butter....yum, how could they not be good!! Simple & lighthearted which only took about an hour to read.
I love this book so much. Like all the Sweet Potato Queens books this one is full of humor and good times with a sprinkling of heartfelt themes that keeps the whole book very grounded. The good thing about listening to the audiobook is that I get to hear Jill Connor Browne narrate it, which doubles the pleasure of reading it because she's just so expressive. The downside to listening to the audiobook is that I'll need to also get a physical copy so I can actually use the recipe portion of the book. It's hard to memorize recipes while I'm driving.
I found these books at a yard sale 5 yrs ago for 50 cents each bought all of them and enjoyed them, Jill Conner Brown is a down to earth, fantastic humorous writer. The Sweet Potato Queens are a group of middle aged women who dress up and twirl batons in the St Patricks day parade in Jackson Mississippi, she gives women advice on men and everything in between, tells stories about her friends and has some great recipes.
There's a reason that this book is named "The Sweet Potato Queen's Big-Ass Cookbook." If you are a low-carb, low-fat, keto-loving, health conscious eater, DO NOT TRY THESE RECIPES! They are long on flavor, and SO much fun, but they are not ANYTHING BUT A "GOOD TIME" CONSIOUS!!! That said, even if you wouldn't touch the recipes with a 10-foot pole, you'll enjoy the LOL stories just as much. Buy this book. Enjoy.
I read this book back when it first came out and I just enjoyed it again all these years later. I'm not from the south, but I start speaking " southern" after reading Jill Conner Browne.
I literally laughed until I cried in three places in the book. Some of the recipes did not appeal to me at all, but those that did sound REALLY good! I recommend it highly and I bought a copy and had it shipped to my sister.
I love the Sweet Potato Queens. If I’d been born in the South I’d probably have been one. “The Sweet Potato Queens” is a women's organization based in Jackson, Mississippi, that has over 6000 chapters in over 20 countries. The Sweet Potato Queens concept has been explained and made popular by a series of books by Jill Conner Browne, who came up with the idea in 1982. It involves a belief in a sisterhood that promotes self-esteem and positive thinking, appealing to mostly middle-aged middle-class women. In 2005, almost ten thousand women dressed up in costumes and came to Jackson for the annual Hal and Mal's St. Patrick’s Day parade, proceeds from which benefited a local children’s hospital. Each local chapter assumes its own theme and designs its own costumes. Some of the chapters participate in parades and fund-raisers in their local communities. There are 9 “Sweet Potato Queens” books, all written by Jill Conner Browne. • Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love (Jan 19, 1999) • God Save the Sweet Potato Queens (Jan 9, 2001) • The Sweet Potato Queens' Big-Ass Cookbook and Financial Planner (Jan 7, 2003) • Sweet Potato Queens' Field Guide to Men: Every Man I Love Is Either Married, Gay, or Dead (Oct 5, 2004) • The Sweet Potato Queens' Wedding Planner/Divorce Guide (Dec 27, 2005) • The Sweet Potato Queens' First Big-Ass Novel: Stuff We Didn't Actually Do, but Could Have, and May Yet (Jan 2, 2007) • The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit (Jan 1, 2008) • American Thighs: The Sweet Potato Queen's Guide to Preserving Your Assets (Dec 30, 2008)
And, of course, here’s another True Confession: I read most of this book out loud to my dogs. Even my husband got to listen to a goodly portion of it – and he loved it, too. I’m sure my dogs did as well. The Sweet Potato Queens have their own website: http://www.sweetpotatoqueens.com/.
Disposition: Highly recommended. Grab it up fast and read it! You need the laugh.
