All I can say is wow! This book surpassed all of my expectations and kept me hooked from beginning to end and I'm glad I received the professionally edited copy so I could read it without any trouble. This book is faced paced, action packed and took me on an emotional ride.

I loved Celiane, she had a dry sarcastic sense of humor which I adored and made me laugh on occasions She was also strong willed and determined but Sara cleverly interwove moments of vulnerability to create an engaging character that I could sympathise with. Also because of this vulnerability it justified her actions, which created a solid and strong story line. As well as this the two guys, Chase and Blake were total opposites. Chase being the sweet, caring, shoulder to cry on and Blake the partner who has had his emotions drilled out of him. These two really played with my emotions through out the book as their relationships with Celiane changed but I loved the difference in personality as it made it all the more interesting to read.

In Enigma Black the action is constructed incredibly well, it is fast paced but filled with loads of detail that leaves everything easy to imagine and visualise. I loved it when Celaine turned into her cold 'super hero' version of herself and the confrontations with The Man in Black were brilliant. The start did confuse me slightly as it is written from multiple POV but that was down to the fact we hadn't been introduced to everyone. After that I had no trouble and towards the end I had the moment of "Oh I get the beginning now" which was great as it linked nicely.

The only bad thing I have to say about this book is the cliff hanger ending! It definitely leaves you wanting to know more and I don't know if I can wait too long to find out what happens next. Overall this book is an engaging, action packed story that will take you on an emotional ride and keep you hooked all the way to the end. I would highly recommend this to anyone and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment!

Sara created a character that even when she exasperated you, you're admiration and hope for her was not deterred. The story was drawn to keep you wanting to know what happened next. It is a can't put it down just yet book, until you get to the end, which obviously won't be until the sequel is in your hands and read.
The story line is interesting, intriguing and emotional. The characters give an emotional connection whether it's dislike, love, or hatred. You become invested in what they are feeling and doing, so much so that you feel you are right there with them, and feeling their pain or joy.
I can actually relate the story line to our country, and what is going on. Yeah, it may not be what is actually happening, at least that we know of, but the ideas are not really far fetched. Control is power, and as in the story line, while Celaine fights for comfort in control of her future, by avenging the past, the real grabbers are launching tactics to get even more power, which will actually decimate the control she thinks she will attain. It's a merry go round I know, but that's really how life is. The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence, so we do things to jump the fence, only to find out it's the same old stuff. Celaine is beginning to question reality though, as she realizes things she just took at face value, really don't quite add up.
Unfortunately, every action we take has a consequence. We may not realize what that consequence is at the time, or even down the road, but that won't change the outcome. Celaine starts to realize this concept, and thinks about not only the mission she is on right now, but what happens if she accomplishes it. How will she feel, and does that end it? Since she started to think about all the pieces to this puzzle, and realized some just don't fit, there was no way for her to ignore her gut feeling that what she thinks the end outcome will be, is just not what will really happen.
Reading the Kindle edition and watching the percentage bar, I wondered how this was going to end, as I could see I was close to the end of the book. I knew there weren't enough pages left to answer all the questions or resolve all the issues. Yet I wasn't disappointed with the end of the first book. The whole story was remarkable and greatly worth reading. Thankfully Sara is working on the sequel.
Get the book. You will certainly enjoy it. Sara does a great job. Thanks Sara.

An unlikely heroine. A mass murderer who's frustrated the President so effectively he greenlights a decision that would (if publicly known in our world) create national panic, not to mention having a moniker so ominous it becomes a parallel for his taste of art. Wise-cracking, techie virgins and the perfect balance of human tragedy and triumph. That's Enigma Black for you, and Sara Burr whips up a story where diverse characters and situations can thrive. Enigma accomplishes an appeal to many tastes without losing any of its authenticity, which isn't exactly a cakewalk. In between the drama, flying fists, explosions, and scientific experiments there lies comedic relief in the dialogue, especially whenever the protagonist's best friend Lucy opens her mouth, and a budding love triangle worthy of any watercooler gossip.
One enjoyable, pre-Christmas shopping trip among a family at The Lakes Mall turns into a plotted terrorist attack that, just about, takes the life of every member. Teenager Celaine Stevens miraculously survives but is left with more baggage than an airport facility (thank you, I'm here all week!). Celaine is sent to live with her aunt on the East Coast, and years later is adopted by her boyfriend's family and finally able to be at peace. That doesn't last long, as one night following work Celaine is stalked and offered an unfathomable request by a man claiming to belong to a militant rogue organization. What the man asks of her is to help take down the infamous Man in Black, the terrorist responsible for her family's demise. This request, though unorthodox and quite ridiculous, triggers a primal need of retribution in Celaine, and she plunges into the unknown. And let me tell you, we should thank her for it.
Enigma Black equally entertains and satisfies the need for an intelligent read. Burr asks us what we would do if forced in the protagonist's position, one of unresolved, constant emotional pain. Where most people have already embraced some form of coping and wouldn't dare take on an evil elusive enough to go untraced for over a decade, Celaine remains in the minor. She's crazy, folks.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Let me just begin by saying that I loved this book. I've haven't read a book that touched me so much in a very long time. "Enigma Black" was a brilliantly woven story that sucked me right in. The interplay between the first person narrative and the third person narrative kept us in loop with all the characters. A mix of thriller, suspense, sci-fi and a dash of romance kept me up all night.

Some of the scenes were so strong and touching, I couldn't help but cry. I had to stop reading just so I could cry my eyes out.

The author has managed to weave a web so intricate and intense that the reader can't get out of if, even if they want to.This book sent me on an emotional roller coaster ride. This book is so full of in-depth emotion that I was pretty much a wreck.

All the Celaine and Chase scenes were absolutely beautiful. They are perfect for each other. They always managed to make me into a puddle of goo. I also loved the relationship Celaine shared with Blake.

Some scenes pretty much broke my heart.

I hope the next book answers the questions as to who The Man in Black is and more importantly I hope Celaine is able to find her happiness again. I really do want her to happy ending and there is only one guy who can give her that- Chase.

A brilliant work by the author. It's gonna take me days to come out of the daze this book has put me in. This book is a work of wonder and brilliance. I'm eagerly waiting for the next one.

Obviously - given my rating - I love this book. I was torn between a 4 and a 5 star.

I am leaning toward a 5 star but there were a few issues for me that made it a 4 star. Mind you - I LOVED the story overall.

THE GOOD:

The plot was brilliant, and totally sucked me in. I love stories that are pure escapism - and this was one of those. There were plenty of twists and turns (which I love) . Some were predictable but others weren't. I was not expecting what happened in the last few chapters at all - well I kind of was - but I thought it would involve a different character.

The characters are well drawn, and relatable, the story flowed nicely and was well written. A few minor editing issues, but I have seen worse in traditionally published books.

BTW - ending was a cliff-hanger. You figure this out as you get toward the end of the book so it's not jarring like it is with many books. I was actually hoping there would be more books in this series and for the last chunk of it leading up to the climax was worried (for purely selfish reasons) that the author was going to sell herself short and make this a complete read. (PHEW!)

THE BAD:

Overall I loved the story but it took me a bit to get into for two reasons (but then BAM! Suddenly I was zooming through the pages like nothing else). The dialogue was overly lengthy at some points and was slightly 'off' character if that makes sense, at times. I guess it was sometimes a little formal compared to the narrative. I think there should have been a little more world building to help readers suspend disbelief *SPOILER ALERT (sort of) a nationwide curfew is imposed and I kind of went 'WTF - as if! It would take a lot more than that' , so strengthening this earlier in the story would help, though as I got further into the book there was more to back this up and strengthen it END (the-sort-of-spoiler) ALERT *

There were also a couple of areas where the wording didn't work. One that comes to mind is 'few' meaning three, but the author used it to mean two. Little things like that suck me out of a story.

IN FACT - I think the author might want to do one final edit, taking some of my points into account, and those of other reviewers as I have a feeling this one will rocket up the Kindle charts as word gets out! And we all know how nasty some reviewers can be when a book suddenly gains popularity.

THE UGLY:

Nothing - because despite my few issues (I like to show both sides) this is a brilliant story that sucked me in and the issues obviously weren't enough to stop me reading. In fact I couldn't read it fast enough. An absolute page turner that kept me up late into the - er - morning, and one I wouldn't be surprised to see snapped up by movie producers in the near future. First time I ever said THAT about an indie book!

Awesome Indies Book Awards is pleased to include ENIGMA BLACK by SARA FURLONG BURR in the library of Awesome Indies' Badge of Approval recipients.

Original Awesome Indies' Assessment (4 stars):

‘Enigma Black’ by Sara Furlong Burr is a high-powered urban, science fiction story that includes romance, heart break, action and even cause to stop and think. Just how easily would Americans give up their freedom if they thought it were the price they had to pay for safety?

Set in a future time when a series of horrific terrorist attacks wrack the nation, Celaine, the survivor of one such attack, is given the opportunity to actually achieve the vengeance she promised the rest of her family after they died in the attack. A bunch of scientists working for a secret government agency can turn her into a super hero, but she has to leave her old life behind. That means walking out on her boyfriend the night he proposes. It breaks both their hearts.

Her new life, after an operation, consists of fighting training in simulated environments with her super-hero partner as they train to catch the Man in Black who is responsible for the attacks. Eventually, she gets some real live action and discovers that it takes more than muscle to defeat the killer of her family. Is this guy even human?

The president has used the existence of the Man in Black as an excuse to bring in a curfew and institute border checks between the states. The two helmeted superheros, (if one dies, they replace them with a new version) give the populous hope, but they haven’t been able to stop the attacks. The next step is marshal law, but some people are asking questions. Will the American people stand for it? Do they have a choice?

Burr’s characterisation, plotting and pacing are all excellent. If you buy this book, you’re in for a good read, except for two points. One is that some aspects of the story are pretty unbelievable. It’s science fiction, so I’ll suspend my disbelief in the unlikely science behind the superhero transformation, but even speculative fiction must make character actions believable. Even putting aside the unlikelihood of a young woman leaving her perfect boyfriend for a very dodgy promise not even backed up by paperwork, Celaine turns into a fighter very quickly. Skill is needed in fighting and Furr didn’t give her heroine the kind of training or the time required to make her sudden emergence as a fighter entirely believable. Why not have given her character some self-defence training before they picked her to be the next superhero? It would have made a lot more sense. But I forgave that too because the book kept me turning pages, and the writing took me right into the scene.

Thank you, Ms. Burr, for providing me a copy in exchange for a review.

Enigma Black is mysterious and filled with action and suspense. The blurb Goodreads has provided doesn't do this book justice. The blurb tells you nothing about what's going on in this book or what the real idea is. When I was reading, I realized that I didn't know what direction the book was going so that left me a bit wary and unsettled. I like to have an idea of what I'm gettinginto before reading, and the lack of information I had made the book seem slow. I was blind when going on and my patience drew thin because the book didn't tell me enough in the beginning for me to enjoy the book at my pace.

However, now that I've read the book I fully comprehend what is going on. There's an evil dude who's killing people without reason and the main character is desperate to kill "The Man in Black" for murdering her family. Hurting loved ones is a good motive, isn't it?

Celaine was an amazing character. I understood what she was going through and how losing her family has affected her ability to fully open up. She may appear strong on the outside, but on the inside she needs someone to rely on to keep her going. What Celaine needs is a rock and to avenge her family's death. She's a determined person with a kick-ass attitude that makes her perfect to play superhero.

For her male counterparts, there were tons of guys Celaine interacted with. I have no idea who the "main" male character is but the potential candidates are wonderful. I loved Blake , and Ian is slowly warming my heart even though not much has been revealed about him. I do love Chase, but I'm slowly losing interest in him. Is that a bad thing?

At times the book moved slowly and then it sped up in a blink of an eye. My main issue would be that there were lengthy paragraphs of description and actions. I want to see more dialogue or those lengthy paragraphs shortened a bit to keep the action aspect of the book intact. The pacing of the book didn't appeal to me and I didn't quite enjoy it like I would have if the pacing felt more consistent.

The switch in perspectives did appeal to me and I loved how I was able to see things through different people. I loved seeing what happened once Celaine left through Chase's eyes and learning a bit more about Blake was a perk. The different perspectives helped unite all the characters and get them involved into the story.

I felt like the ending was a cliffhanger even though there was nothing cliffhanger-ish about it. I can't wait to read the sequel to see what's going on with Celaine!

I would like to thank the author for giving a copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review.

This book was really different, and I mean that in a good way. It was part sci-fi, part dystopian, and part romance. I love how cleverly all those genres were mixed almost seamlessly into one book. It made for an action-packed, intense, and interesting story that won't be forgotten any time soon.

The main character, Celaine, was pretty awesome. I really liked her, and she's one of the few female book protagonists that I could see myself being friends with. She's caring, kind, and loyal to those she cares about. However, she's also flawed, and in need of revenge. That need for revenge is what really gets this story going, and it causes many things to happen that otherwise would not have.

As for the other characters, I really liked Blake, Chase, and Lucy. Blake was an awesome friend and partner, and he had a really touching backstory. Chase was a good love interest, and you could tell he really cared for Celaine. Finally, there was Lucy. She was such a great friend, and I was sad to see what ultimately happened with her, even though it was foreshadowed.

Then, there are the villains. There are an unusual number of those in this book, and we don't really know anything about them yet, other than that they are motivated to do evil to gain power. Others are just suspected to be villains, so it will definitely be interesting to see what happens in the second book of this series.

As for the plot, it was really interesting. There were a lot of twists that I didn't see coming, which made for great reading. There were also lots of really intense action scenes, which I think that this author is really good at. However, near the end, there were some assumptions and twists made by the characters that I really didn't care for. I get why they were done, but I really don't like when characters assume things, and therefore get themselves into situations that they never would have done before.

In conclusion, this was a really good story. I loved the action, the mystery, the story, and Celaine. It kept me on edge while I read it, and was very hard to put down on some occasions. However, it comes short of being a great book because of some of the characters' assumptions, and things became needlessly complicated, since there was already enough going on in the story without all of that. However, I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for something different and exciting.

‘Enigma Black’ REVIEW - A Solid Start to a Super-Hero Tale

You don't have to like super hero books to like 'Enigma Black' by Sara Furlong Burr - it's a solid read whether it's your genre or not. (It's barely a hop, skip and a jump from the fantasy and horror genres I like, so I'm all in.)

I’ll try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. At its heart, this novel asks you - via likable protagonist Celaine Stevens - the question: What would you do if you were given a choice to right the wrongs in your past? Simple, you would think, but it asks another question, too: How would you live with it, if, in righting those past wrongs, it took your current world away, and maybe your future?

Burr weaves a satisfying and well-paced narrative that will have you coming back for more. The end of each chapter made me instantly want to start reading the next, always a good sign for me. There's very little to nit-pick about for those of you who look for such things in reviews. For example, I am not a big fan of jumping from 1st person to 3rd person, per se, but Burr takes a consistent approach, and I quickly forgot about that.

Really, the only thing this book suffers from is that it is the first book in the story. While it has its own arc, it has to do all the heavy lifting of setting everything in motion. You initially want to get to the 'superhero' part of the story, but it would be unrealistic to jump right to it, so Burr gives you as plausible a way to do so as possible. She strikes about as right a balance as can be done, even in keeping with some of the assumptions you can make in this genre of tale. I look forward to future stories where she can more properly dive right in, with all the introductions made.

If I could give a 4.5 star rating, that would be my preference. For those of us who like this genre, it's a great start-up and any editing distractions are minimal, so it'd be a 5. For those who aren't into the more fantastic side of fiction, there may be some leaps and bounds (pun obviously intended) that seem a little too contrived, but it might be a good one to try to see if you like it, so a 4. Since I'm the former group, not the latter, a 5 is going into Amazon and Goodreads.

Looking forward to the rest of the Enigma Black series! Read more reviews at www.mattholgatebooks.com

Action, political conspiracies, and romance. An excellent read!

I'm not a big fan of superhero stories, but I really enjoyed Enigma Black. As I read it I found myself very engrossed in the story in a way that I felt a connection with the characters and cared about the fate of each of the them. The author did a great job of character building and moving the story along.

Even if you're not into superhero stories, like me, if you enjoy action, romance, sci-fi, conspiracies, humor, or all of the above, you'll more than likely enjoy Enigma Black. I loved the relationship between Celaine and Blake (the two main characters), and Cameron is definitely one of my favorites; he's such a smart ass. I think the narrative is where the author shines the most. The shift between first (Celaine Stevens) and third person perspectives was done very well. Dialogue sometimes feels a bit too formal, but overall it was great! There were some really good lines in Enigma Black, particularly between Celaine, Black and Cameron.

The story does end in a cliffhanger, but not in such a way that it feels unfinished. It is clearly a series and ended in just the right fashion to leave me wanting more. I'm really looking forward to Book 2 because there are certain things revealed in the final chapters that I can't wait to see unfold. You'll just have to grab a copy for yourself to find out exactly what I'm talking about.

I've never read a book that was flawless, and there are a few minor formatting issues in this e-book (mainly with some indents here an there) and a few minor typos, but they were very minor and very limited. This book was very easy to read and enjoyable at that. Enigma Black was an excellent story!

From the very beginning of the novel, Enigma Black will have you captivated, at the edge of your seat, desperately and continuously reading the pages until you reach the end. The story is well-written, action-packed, and heart-wrenching, and I couldn't have asked for more.

Not many times do you see characters this well-developed. Celaine is the kind of character that the reader can connect to. That you might think wow, that sounds like something I would say, which allows you to connect to the story even more. Even the characters that I didn't like were written so well, I almost did like them. The Man in Black is the psychopathic monster (and a brilliant antagonist) yet I find myself highlighting some of the quotes in his section, because they were so brilliant.

I always enjoy a story that really takes you into that world, and Enigma Black delivers. Between the separate parts, and starting Celaine's narrative when she was seventeen before going deep into her story, along with the use of the occasional third-person point of view, I didn't just feel like I was reading the story, I felt that I was living it. And that is really something amazing.

With an incredible, yet believable, plot, nonstop action, witty dialogue, and connections that you will make as you continue to read, Enigma Black is a story you will fall in love with. I highly recommend, and am eagerly looking forward to the next installment.

After a somewhat slow start, by Chapter 3 this book became engrossing and I got caught up in the adventure. Celaine is easy to like, and I had no difficultly relating to her, even with the heart-breaking decisions that were forced upon her. The secondary characters interacted with Celaine in believable ways, adding greater depth to this story of revenge and retribution. Determined to follow-up on a pledge made years earlier on the darkest day of her life, Celaine adopts a whole new persona and leaves behind her best friend and her fiancé in order to accomplish her long-unfulfilled pledge to rid the country of the terrorist known only as the Man in Black.

This is the first book in a planned series, and while the ending of this installment was jarring it also serves an important purpose, giving Celaine even further cause to continue her fight against the elusive “Man in Black”. This is an emotionally complicated story of love and loss that, while entertaining, also gives us plenty of opportunity to examine uncomfortable issues when the choices made for worthy reasons still lead to unexpected consequences.

This book was given to me by the author in exchange for my honest review.

I learned about this book through the Read it and Reap program, and I’m so glad I did! I am a huge fan of dystopian books, and Enigma Black is a great addition to that genre. As I was reading the book, it dawned on me that this could actually happen to a country or group of people; that freaked me out! The plot kept me interested, and I kept telling myself one more chapter…that didn’t end well when I was still up reading at 3am. I connected with the characters and was sad when the main character, Celaine, made several heartbreaking decisions throughout the book. I also teared up when died; I really liked him! I am very happy this is a trilogy though, as after that ending, I need to read what happens next!

I believe fans of dystopian novels, as well as other genres, will enjoy Enigma Black; romance, political drama, and sci-fi are all mixed in, giving all readers something to look forward to. We also get to see what is happening through several characters points-of-view; I thought this was great! This also gives me hope that will get back together eventually *fingers crossed* I hope book two is released soon!

Think sci-fi, lost romance, and lots of fighting sequences mixed together to create an action packed dystopian novel. Starting as a normal, spoiled teenager, Celaine Stevens' life ends at 17 with the death of her family. Years later, she is faced with leaving the love of her life or getting revenge on the mad man who killed her family; the mad man who continues to wreck havoc in the United States with terroristic bombings and killings.

The novel follows her choice and its consequences. After disappearing from her nearly perfect life, Celaine's choices shove wedges into the lives of her boyfriend and best friend with possibly deadly consequences. Celaine's new abilities put her face to face with The Man in Black and an epic battle is fought to save the life of her lost love and hundreds of others. Facing yet another tragic loss, Celaine gets lost in depression and following her new purpose to bring down The Man in Black.

This novel is packed with a ton of action and adventure with just a taste of tragic love. I enjoyed the sarcastic heroine and her twisted story. The author does an excellent job of character building and I look forward to continuing Celaine's story.

Note: I received a copy of this novel from the author in return for an honest review.

There has been a series of bombings across the USA, perpetrated by 'The Man in Black', and Celaine's family has been caught up in one of the most devastating, changing Celaine's life irrevocably. This is powerful and emotive storytelling and we are drawn into Celaine's world from the start as she tries to put her life back together.
The trauma to Celaine's life is mirrored in the changes to the USA as the country and all it stands for.is broken by these relentless attacks and the USA descends into dictatorship. But who is 'The Man in Black'? How does he single-handedly bring down a democracy such as the US? And how can he be stopped? Celaine will have to work this out once she is 'selected' to join a secret government agency created to do just that.

This is exciting, fast-paced, action-packed and at times humorous and heart-breaking. The Science Fiction elements sound plausible and well thought through and Celaine is a great main character – resourceful, sarcastic, loyal and caring with a great wit and all the doubts any one of us entertain at one time or another. – and it is impossible not to empathise with her. I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

'Enigma Black' is the story of Celaine, a young woman who must leave behind her friends and the man who loves her to avenge the loss of her family at the hands of a mass-murdering villain.

This book tells a classic superhero tale, with major sacrifices being made by Celaine on her way to becoming a hero capable and strong enough to fight the man who killed her parents. I was quickly absorbed in the story and found the main characters easy to like. There were some good twists and turns throughout which kept the plot from becoming predictable and kept me turning pages. I read this in a few quick hours and it kept me entertained throughout.

I thought the tone was a bit uncertain in places - it would seem like a serious moment but then Celaine would wink or something. This was the only thing that really bothered me and it's a minor complaint for a story that captivated me from beginning to end.

Overall this is an entertaining, page-turning, superhero story. The ending both shocked and satisfied - I look forward to finding out what happens next!

I liked the sound of Enigma Black and it lived up to the promise. It's a nicely-paced action story that kept me turning the pages. The main character, Celaine, from whose point of view most of the story is told, is likeable and believable as a character. Having suffered much personal tragedy with the deaths of her entire family at the hands of the terrorist The Man In Black, Celaine rebuilds a perfect, happy life, before being offered an opportunity to join a group committed to stopping the activities of The Man In Black. From there, Celaine's journey is transformative and unpredictable, and the action, unexpected twists and intrigue keep coming. What seems to be a fairly straightforward plot evolves into something deeper and more involved. All of the characters are well-formed and unique. The only slight issue I had with the book was that it needed a closer proofreading, but that is a minor quibble. Overall, it's a very good YA action novel, and I'd like to read more in the series.

This was an excellent book. It tells the story of a girl who lost everything in the devastation occurring in our country. Ten years later she leaves what she's managed to gain back in life to seek vengeance for her family. This story had me captivated from the prologue and kept my interest throughout. Ms. Burr wrote this book at a fast moving pace and tied in politics and aspects of society seamlessly, keeping everything packed with either action or heart wrenching scenes that will make you feel everything the characters do.

The reason I gave it four stars and not five is because there were times when the whole super-human thing became incredibly corny. Especially during the fight scenes, which could have been much better than they were. However, it's clear the author did her research when it came to how these humans are transformed and managed to pull off the realism. This is a good book, read it.

I was only a few pages in when I got the sneaking suspicion that I would not enjoy this book. I should have trusted my instinct and cut my losses when I was only 20 pages in.

This is not a good book. The plot is cliché, the characters are cliché, the dialogue is honest-to-God contrived and incredibly stupid, and the writing is... just... bad. It's just bad. I didn't find the heroine smart or witty. Her behavior wasn't bad-ass, it was just ass. Her come-backs weren't funny unless you're still in high school, and even then you would probably be verbally smacked around easily. There was nothing new, quirky, interesting or profound about this book, and the fact that I finished it says more about my ability to withstand torture than the author's ability to write a gripping plot. Even the "oh damn what a plot-twist" supposed moments were nowhere near plot-twisty - they were the natural, expected consequences.

All in all, don't waste your time or money.

Wow! I was truly blown away by Enigma Black, and cannot wait for the sequel! Dystopian stories are by far my favorites, but this one made stood out as a new favorite.

Sara Furlong Burr's writing is wildly imaginative and filled with snark and wit. The characters are brilliantly developed throughout the story making them come alive in settings described with such imagery that you feel a part of the story. Enigma Black is filled with twists and turns that will leave you guessing all the way until the end (don't worry, this is a spoiler free zone).

Personally, this first book sets the stage for the series to join the ranks of The Hunger Games in my mind. Even though it is a young adult book, it has the ability to draw in audiences of all ages. If ever there was a book that should be made into a movie, I am voting for this one!

Enigma Black is a fast, heart pounding story.

It started out nice and easy but in the end, it was explosive!

A truly great read. I am so glad that I passed up the opportunity of a movie night for a book night. :D

There's elements of political struggle, conspiracy theories about the government, romance and death.

I really got attached to the main character, Celaine because she has been through a lot. I really admire her strong character and you have no choice but to feel her pain and feel concern towards her actions.

If you love science fiction and romance, this book is what you want. However, keep in mind that this is book 1 and the ending is really really killing me.

The suspense in the book is utterly perfect and the characters complimented each other.
In conclusion, 5 stars!

Sincerely,
Selina.

Enigma Black is aimed at the YA market and I'm far past that, but I really enjoyed it. The characters are well drawn and I liked the heroine and her friends (and co-workers). It's science fiction with political intrigue and a love story. All through the book, I wanted to know what happens next. In fact, since it's a series, I want to know what happens in the next book. Enigma Black is a book with a lot of excitement and a lot of heart. Even if you're not a 'young adult,' you should check it out.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I really like this book and it kind of reminded me of V for Vendetta and i loved that movie. I thought that it was well written and i really like most of the characters. I was really sad when i did not want that to happen at all i wanted him to get together with Celiene. There was also some funny dialogue and cam was funny in his chessey way. I was also sad at the end but i cant wait for the next book. I think this trilogy is going to be great and i cant wait for her to kill the man in blake. At some points the book was kind of slow like in her training but i think the last fight scene and the end made up for it. Overall this was a good book and im looking forward to reading the next one. :)

Despite some grammatical issues, Enigma Black is an easy read steeped in timely political drama. With an apocalyptic theme, Enigma Black tells the story of Celaine Steven's quest for revenge on the man who murdered her family. The writing sometimes slows and it can be difficult to stay focused. I began to care less about Celaine and more about her partner in retribution, Blake Cohen. Celaine often comes across whiny when she's trying to be witty. However, I have to give Ms. Burr props for writing a story that is instep with our current political unrest and for creating an amazing twist that will leave you stunned. For that alone, it's a must-read you don't want to miss.

This is a book that makes you wonder what you'd give up for revenge. Celaine chose to give up everything for payback for those who killed her family. She goes on an interesting journey whereby she gains some superhuman skills. It is a story that is a slow burn that keeps you guessing where it's heading. The plot had some interesting twists and didn't generally go where I had predicted. Celaine becomes this kick-ass woman that gave up so much just so she could keep a ten year old promise but sadly it seemed that she had to give up so much more. It definitely will keep you reading and looking forward to book 2. It's a book worth reading.

This book was the perfect book to kick off my summer! Fun, not too heavy, and with a strong female lead.

We meet Celaine just before her world is turned upside down, and then we follow her as she grapples with a less friendly environment. Who is The Man in Black, the world's terrorist? What is his agenda? Is the President making the right calls as personal freedoms are curtailed? Celaine is pulled into protecting her country, community, and loved ones in this fast-paced YA thriller.

If you like City of Bones or other YA apocalyptic literature, then you will love Enigma Black! I can't wait for Burr's sequel.

This was quite the interesting read. Super hero's, life gone astray and who, really, is the villain?

It was exciting, tense, funny and the plot(s) flowed really well. I certainly want to read the next one - the cliffhanger at the end just made me that much more anxious to read it!

The relationships felt real, with all the anguish and twists/turns that accompany them

Recommend to anyone who wants action and thrill thrown into a sci-fi/political/unique world.

It all ties in, somehow, and I really can't wait to see what happens next!

That was very unexpected. I got this as a freebie, and it sounded good but I was surprised at just how good, and how connected I was going to feel to the story. I do question Celaine's choices because she is a smart girl and I think her grief is clouding her judgement badly. It doesn't take a genius to see that the whole organization and The Man in Black are all in one boat, and she's been duped. I was really hurt to see how Blake didn't last long in the story. I had my hopes for them getting together. Really looking forward to the second book, and how this story progresses.

When Celaine is a child her family are killed in a terrorist explosion in a shopping mall. Ten years later, she still hasn't come to terms with her loss. Therefore when Celaine is given the opportunity to avenge their death, she doesn't hesitate even though she knows her life will never be the same again.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I was hooked from the first chapter, wanting to know how Celaine was going to cope with her new life, away from her friends and the wonderful man in her life. The characters are real and the plot mesmerising. Not to be missed.

I loved this book! It isn't often that I like the main characters immediately when starting a new book, but I did with this one. The storyline had a good pace and kept my interest all the way thru-I was even trying to sneak read it at work because I couldn't wait to see how it ended...and the last 50 pages or so broke my heart!!!! I can't wait for the next one because I have to know what's going to happen...please write quickly, Sara!
