Rem Koolhaas: Oma

Rate this book
Rem Koolhaas (Rotterdam,1944) studied architecture at the AA in London--where he went on to become a lecturer--and at the IAUS in New York, during Peter Eisenman's time there. Koolhaas has always been connected with the theory of architecture, as lecturer at the innovative AA, as a speaker, and with his published work: Delirious New York, a retrospective manifesto for Manhattan (1978) and the recent S, M, L, XL (1995). In 1972 Koolhaas set up the OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), whose name clearly expresses the planning intentions of the team, comprising Koolhaas, Elia and Zoe Zenghelis, and Madelon Vriessendorp.

I bought this little art book with a brief intro to Koolhaas’s ideas and buildings in the gift shop of his Seattle public library (which is still one of the most amazing building I have ever been in). It isn’t much of a book really, mainly picture from the library and some of OMA’s other projects, but it’s a cheap place to start looking into Koolhaas’s work.

Part of a series geared towards the jet setter who has a mere five minutes (and five dollars) to delve into a comprehensive history of famous architects, this series is light on substance. The images are decent (occasionally with erroneous captions - perhaps these were written in five minutes as well) and the smallish books fit nicely within my ever-shrinking bookshelf allotment.
