In January 2006 Peter Eisenman joined Rem Koolhaas at the Architectural Association for an evening of conversation about architecture, ideology, and the city. Their dialogue forms the basis for the first volume of AA Words, a series emphasizing the written word as the basis for critical debate by contemporary architects and theorists. Each architect states his views about the terms of architecture, including its theories and relationship to the city and other forms of critical and cultural practice. As a coda to the conversation, the book includes contributions by Jeffrey Kipnis, Robert E. Somol, and Brett Steele, who offer their personal interpretations of the critical practices of Eisenman and Koolhaas.

About the author

Peter Eisenman is an American architect. Eisenman's professional work is often referred to as formalist, deconstructive, late avant-garde, late or high modernist, etc. A certain fragmenting of forms visible in some of Eisenman's projects has been identified as characteristic of an eclectic group of architects that were (self-)labeled as deconstructivists, and who were featured in an exhibition by the same name at the Museum of Modern Art. The heading also refers to the storied relationship and collaborations between Peter Eisenman and post-structuralist thinker Jacques Derrida.

Começa muito bem, mas depois que os arquitetos começam a se "alfinetar", fica tudo meio cansativo e repetitivo.

It's a great concept, and the discussion between Eisenman and Koolhass is insightful with reference with each other's theoretic (Koolhaas's Delirious New York, Eisenman's Maison Domino analysis etc) and practical work (comparison of both of their competition entries and separate contract). However, the panel is barely 1/3 of the entire book, the rest is just three guys talking about them talking about things.

Also, it's a bit deceptive to call it 'Eisenman meets Koolhass', these two guys have been friends for ages (they met at a Richard Meier lecture - bahah the irony), so the tone is of mutual appreciation and respect rather than Eisenman's usual blatant arrogance.

A ideia de trasnformar um diálogo entre dois famosos arquitetos já é boa por si. Mas a edição da Cosac Naify é brilhante.

Tendo em vista que o livro é quase todo composto por conversas, primeiro entre os dois arquitetos e posteriormente entre dois críticos, a editora repensou a forma de introduzir as falas num texto. A formatação tradicional, com travessões e repetição do nome dos debatedores, ficaria tediosa. Em vez disso, a editora criou uma malha, onde cada recuo sinaliza quem está falando no momento.

Da primeira vez que abri o livro, tomei um susto e achei que seria complicado e chato ler o livro. Tanto que ele passou muitos meses esquecido na minha prateleira. Mas uma vez que tomei a coragem de iniciar a leitura, o texto fluiu tranquilamente. A sensação foi a mesma de ler um livro do Saramago pela primeira vez. A gente fica meio perdido quando não encontra as vírgulas, pontos e travessões, mas em pouco tempo a vista desliza com facilidade sobre as páginas.

Como vários livros da Cosac, o conteúdo inicialmente complexo, vai sendo desmistificado com os textos complementares. Chega a ser divertido, pois quando pego um livro da editora, fico ansiosa para chegar ao posfácio. É quando consigo desvendar vários mistérios que ficaram no ar durante a leitura inicial.

Ao fim do livro, percebe-se que a opção por uma formatação diferente é também uma metalinguagem. Os dois personagens do livro são conhecidos por construirem volumes escritos como se estivessem construindo um objeto arquitetônico. Os autores estão inseridos em um debate sobre semiologia e sobre formas de apresentação gráfica.

É prazeroso ver a coerência do volume. Ver como o cuidado com a edição não é um simples requinte estético, mas um discurso eloquente.

A discussion between two friends. Eisenmann is a type of researcher and lecturer architect, while the so called black box of Koolhas design drive his curiosity on what's behind it.
The discussion was so intimate that they both refuse Steele as the moderator to organize the topic, and I as a reader couldn't understand so much, for the thing discussed seems overlapped one another. The discussion barely filled only a quarter of the book, while the rest is another workshop to define what they'd been talked about, hahaha..

In this transcript book of the debate that happened at the Architectural Association in London between Peter Eisenman and Rem Koolhaas it´s very deep and analytical in the proccess of works between the archictets.

Also after the transcript of the debate, Jeffrey Kipnis and Robert Somol, take considerations on the importance of the critic writing in the architectural process of both starchitects, similarities and differences on the approach of RK and PE are also pointed.

O primeiro capítulo, que traz as falas dos dois arquitetos, é muito bom e até mesmo divertido, mas o segundo, que traz as falas dos críticos é maçante em algumas partes. Os outros capítulos poderiam trazer mais textos. Muito boas as citações na última parte do livro, bom pra ter em casa por esse motivo.
