A perilous quest... an unimaginable reward.

Sword smith Keena Naess leads a secret life in the village of Klifby, where the use of magick, even for healing, is punishable by death. Her family taken from her, her brother disappeared and accused of their parents’ murder, Keena has spent every moment forging a magickal sword that will take her beyond the Veil to learn the truth about their parents' deaths and exonerate her brother. But when she uses her magick to heal a wounded eaglet, she is revealed as a mage to the very people who would execute her.

Varick Garth, captain of the village’s winged strike force, has given up his wings in order to gain the trust of a mage who can lead him to the Veil, the source of all magick, so he can destroy the Veil and end the years-long unnatural winter that envelops the world.

Despite the respect and attraction growing between Wing and mage, Varick's orders are to make certain Keena is beyond the Veil when he destroys it. Now he must choose between the Wings that have been his entire life and the woman whose actions engender a loyalty greater than he ever imagined.

Eagle Magus
by Susan Lohrer
Starsong Publishing
Book 1 of the Magus Series;
Wolf Magus, book 2, to be released in 2013
Eagle Magus is an enjoyable fantasy adventure/quest novella. The two main characters, Varick and Keena, struggle with internal and external conflicts regarding the nature of their purpose and their existence.
Eagle Magus is almost compelling, except that the story focuses a bit too much on moving the action along, and not enough on character evolution - particularly as they question their world-views and begin to challenge their assumptions about the Truth as they have always understood it. As mentioned, the pacing is quick. The reader tumbles from one major crisis to another calamity without much breath between, and also without much transition. The story would benefit from more attention to these transitional passages. With this additional detail, it would not be so jarring to see two sworn enemies suddenly declare their enduring commitment to building a new world together. The story is not implausible, but it is skeletal. It could use more meat.
The world-building, also, leaves the reader guessing. Lorher has created a world which appears to be quite interesting, with lots of tension between magic and its purpose, between races and regions - but, these details are never drawn out fully, so it can be hard to follow the "why" behind the action.
It's entertaining, and enjoyable, and with a little more patient description, could be quite good. The next installment, Wolf Magus, is due later this year. Let's hope that book two benefits from more muscle and dressing.

Another wonderful novel by Susan Lohrer. I love the abundance of action & the fast moving pace of her writing.

The cycles of the Veil replenish the energy of the world where the Wings live. Somehow the Maguses have entered through the Veil and created a never-ending winter which will soon destroy the race of Wings.

Varick Garth voluntarily has his wings amputated in order to secure the trust of a Magus. He needs the skills of a Magus to guide him to the veil. He coerces Lady Keena Naess to be his guide and use her knowledge of magick to permanently close the Veil, preventing the Maguses from returning, and find the secret of the mythical Eagle Magus.

Keena must find her way to the Veil to locate her brother who has gone in search of truth and justice for the murder of their parents. During their journey Varick and Keena are drawn to each other, but Varick is confused by some startling revelations following several catastrophes and more than one encounter with an evil Magus.

Who is telling the truth? Varick no longer knows who he really is, and questions whether he can trust Keena if they succeed in reaching the Veil in time. Although Keena has deliberately deserted him twice, he knows she has never lied to him. Varick fears he won't be able to accomplish his assignment. They are both in for some major surprises in their journey!
